Send us Fan MailThis video is about My Feedback can be difficult to hear, especially when it conflicts with how you see yourself. You believe you are confident, but someone describes you as dismissive. You consider yourself collaborative, yet colleagues experience you as closed off. You think you are being decisive, but your team sees you as unwilling to listen. That disconnect may feel unfair. However, it can also reveal one of the most important factors affecting your leadership growth: the gap between what you intend and what other people experience. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I examine how the leadership perception gap can influence your reputation, professional relationships, promotion opportunities, and career advancement.I am recording this episode after delivering the closing keynote at NextUp's Rising Stars Conference, where participants used feedback from a 360 assessment to strengthen their leadership development. That experience reinforced something I see repeatedly in my coaching and speaking work. Most mid-career professionals do not lack skill, experience, or commitment. What they often lack is accurate, actionable feedback from people they trust. Why Self-Awareness Matters for Career AdvancementLeadership is not defined solely by what you intend. It is also defined by what other people experience when they work with you.You may intend to challenge your team, but they experience you as overly critical. You may intend to give people autonomy, but they experience a lack of support. You may intend to demonstrate confidence, but others experience you as unwilling to consider different perspectives.Your intentions matter, but they do not erase the impact of your behavior. This is why leadership self-awareness is essential for anyone seeking a promotion, greater influence, or a more strategic role. You cannot close a perception gap you are unwilling to examine. Why “You're Doing Great” Can Stall Your CareerSome of the most limiting feedback mid-career professionals receive sounds positive.“You're doing great.”“Keep doing what you're doing.”“You're reliable.”“We can always count on you.”These statements may be sincere, but they do not necessarily help you grow.Being reliable, trusted, and busy does not automatically mean you are viewed as influential, strategic, or ready for the next level of leadership. Vague praise can prevent you from identifying the behavior changes required to advance your career. In this episode, I explain how to look beneath general compliments and ask better questions about your leadership effectiveness, visibility, and readiness for greater responsibility. How to Process Difficult Feedback Without Becoming DefensiveTough feedback can trigger embarrassment, frustration, anger, or self-doubt. It is easy to dismiss the feedback, question the other person's motives, or immediately defend your intentions.Instead, I share a practical process for evaluating feedback more objectively:Pause before responding.Treat the feedback as a data point rather than an absolute truth.Separate your emotional reaction from the information being offered.Look for patterns across different people and situations.Identify what the behavior may be costing you.Choose one specific behavior to change. One person's opinion may be an outlier. When several people describe a similar experience, however, you have a pattern worth examining. The goal is not to change everything about yourself. The goal is to identify one behavior that could improve your leadership presence, relationships, credibility, or promotion readiness. How to Get 360-Style Feedback Without a Formal AssessmentYou do not need access to a formal 360 leadership assessment to receive valuable feedback. You can begin by having intentional conversations with your manager, peers, direct reports, mentors, former colleagues, and trusted professional contacts. The key is to speak with people who will offer honest insight rather than simply validate what you already believe.Consider asking questions such as:What is one leadership strength I should continue using? What is one behavior that may be limiting my effectiveness? When have you seen me at my best as a leader? What do I do that may make it harder for people to work with me?What would I need to demonstrate for you to see me as ready for the next level?Do not collect feedback merely to prove that you are doing well. Use it to understand how others experience your leadership and where a small change could create a meaningful difference. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Why unclear feedback can create confusion and stall leadership developmentHow 360 assessments reveal leadership strengths and perception gapsWhy leadership is shaped by what people experience, not only by what you intendHow positive but vague feedback can quietly limit career advancementWhy reliability, trust, and busyness are not the same as influence and strategic valueHow defensiveness and poorly delivered feedback prevent meaningful growthHow to decode vague praise that may signal a leadership limitationA step-by-step process for responding to difficult feedbackHow to identify patterns instead of overreacting to one person's opinionHow to gather honest, 360-style input without using a formal assessmentHow changing one behavior can improve your leadership reputation and career opportunitiesBuild the Leadership Reputation You WantThe feedback that frustrates you most may contain the insight you need most. You do not have to agree with every comment you receive. You do need to remain curious about the patterns shaping how others experience you. When you learn how to separate intention from impact, you can make more strategic decisions about how you communicate, lead, and show up at work. That self-awareness can help you strengthen your professional relationships, increase your influence, and position yourself for your next career opportunity.Listen to this episode and identify one perception gap that may be affecting how you are seen when you are not in the room.Bring This Conversation to Your OrganizationI speak to organizations and professional associations about career advancement, leadership effectiveness, communication, and how we SHOW UP at work.If you know an organization that is looking for a keynote speaker or workshop facilitator, I would appreciate an introduction. I design engaging and practical experiences that help mid-career professionals and leaders increase their self-awareness, strengthen their influence, and lead more impactfully. To discuss a keynote, workshop, or facilitated leadership development program, connect with me through the information in the show notes, on LinkedIn, or email me at john@johnneral.com.Remember, how you SHOW UP matters.Support the showIf this episode resonated with you and you want more support in how you SHOW UP for your career and life, I want to invite you to join the SHOW UP Leadership Lab. Thom Francis welcomes poet, author, and educator Melody Davis to the Poets Speak Loud stage at McGeary's in downtown Albany, NY. She was the featured poet at the long-running open mic series on April 30, 2018. +++++ On April 30, 2018, Davis was the featured poet at the long-running series hosted by Mary Panza. She began her reading with work from her book One Ground Beetle: A Year in Haiku (Bad Cat Press, 2017), with prints by Harold Lohner. It was "Show & Tell" with Melody reading a haiku or two, then holding up the book to show the colorful print on the facing page. The haiku were on trees, clouds, birds, round stones, Albany, and work meetings. She then read from her collection of poems Holding the Curve (Broadstone Books), “Caillebotte's Laundry” and “Walter, the Lawyer.” Melody Davis, a writer and art historian, is the author of three poetry collections, including a special edition artists' book, One Ground Beetle, with Harold Lohner; and Holding the Curve. Her work in the history of photography has been published widely. In 2015, she published Women's Views: The Narrative Stereograph in Nineteenth-Century America with the University Press of New Hampshire. Davis has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Henry Luce Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, MetroArts (PA), and she was a finalist in the National Poetry Series. She holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and was an Associate Professor of Art History at the Sage College of Albany.

Thom Francis welcomes Ulster County Poet Laureate Mike Jurkovic. Mike was the featured reader, promoting his chapbook Eve's Venom, at Poets Speak Loud on Monday, October 27, 2014. +++++ Poets Speak Loud was a poetry open mic series hosted by Mary Panza that began at The Lark Tavern in January 31, 2005 - the same night that that legendary local poet, environmentalist, activist, and “grandfather of the Albany poetry scene” Tom Nattell passed away. In 2010, a fire destroyed the longtime Albany establishment, forcing the open mic to find a new home. Not long after, Poets Speak Loud rose from the ashes and began its run at McGeary's in downtown Albany until COVID-19 brought the series to its end. Over the years many poets and spoken word artists from the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, and beyond were featured at Poets Speak Loud. On October 27, 2014, poet and writer Mike Jurkovic took the stage. Mike Jurkovic was named 2025 and 2026 Ulster County Poet Laureate. He has published poetry, prose, and music reviews globally with little reportable income. Jurkovic's 5 full-length poetry collections include Buckshot Reckoning (Luchador Press, 2023), mooncussers (Luchador Press, 2022) AmericanMental (Luchador Press, 2020); haiku collections Monet's Bamboo (CAPS Press, 2025), and Blue Fan Whirring (Nirala Press, 2018). He is the president of Calling All Poets reading series, which is celebrating 26 years in the Hudson Valley. You can find his reviews online at All About Jazz and lightwoodpress.com. He hosts NuJazzXcursions every Monday night at 9:00 am on WVKR-91.3FM Vassar College. Local poet Dan Wilcox posted on his blog about MIke's reading: Mike Jurkovic has been reading around a lot lately, promoting his new chapbook Eve's Venom (Post Traumatic Press, 2014), which I'd already bought, but it is always fun to hear Mike read. He began with some poems not in the book with minimal introduction, because his poems often tell a story, cynically pondering the world around him, such as a poems about being stopped at a traffic light next to “the dwarf Morpheus,” or “Crows Gathering at the Grey Sky,” or “Andy Martin's American Letter.” Then to poems from Eve's Venom, some read without the titles, …the hysterical “Bio-Hazard,” “Yearbook,” … In the past Mike would wander the room performing his poems, tonight he stuck pretty close to the mic, his poems doing the wandering.

Thom Francis welcomes poet Don Levy who shared his work at the 2024 Word Fest Open Mic at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts on April 27, 2024. +++++ The Word Fest first took shape in 2001 as a one-day open mic in Thatcher Park, bringing together poets from across the region to share their work. Over the years, it has expanded into a week-long celebration of poetry and spoken word, incorporating workshops, poetry slams, performances, and its signature open mic event. After a break since 2019, the Word Fest Open Mic made its highly anticipated return on Saturday, April 27, at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. The evening showcased powerful performances from featured spoken word artists and a dynamic lineup of open mic participants. In today's episode, we are thrilled to highlight Don Levy, a long-time area poet and former host of many open mics in the 90s and early-2000s, At the event, Don read a new piece, “My Queerness,” and some old time favorites such as the once-televised “Lobsters at the Grand Union.”
Simeon Birnbaum, the NCAA 1500m record holder, is heading into NCAAs hungry, healthy, and ready to hurt people. Dominic sits down with the Oregon junior days before the outdoor National Championships, where Birnbaum is eyeing a 1500m/5000m double on his home track in Eugene. The guys cover the full arc of his breakthrough season: from the December 3000m that broke Edward Cheserek's Oregon school record; to the Big Ten indoor sweep; to a 3:31.69 at the Oregon Team Invitational that rewrote the collegiate record book by over a full second. Simeon breaks down the workout that tipped off head coach Jerry Schumacher that something special was coming; why he still refuses to train in super shoes; and what it felt like to watch the DMR fall apart at indoor nationals before channeling that fury into a runner-up finish in the 3000m the following day.The conversation gets into the strategic chess match of championship 1500m racing; the physical toll of the 1500/5000m double at regionals in brutal humidity; and what it means to finally arrive on the national stage as the favorite rather than the chaser. Simeon also reflects on the Penn Relays DMR redemption, his rivalry with Diadora teammate Marco Langon, and a 1:44 800m PR he ran more or less for fun. With NCAAs at Hayward Field, he's not hiding the goal: walk away with two titles in front of the home crowd.Tap into the Simeon Birnbaum Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! Thom Francis welcomes poet, author, and artist Elizabeth Gordon who shared her work at the Year in Review event at The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Center in Albany on December 17, 2022. +++++ Since 2021, the Hudson Valley Writers Guild has hosted the Year in Review poetry event to highlight the poets and writers in the area while looking back at the year that was. In 2022, I was joined on stage by five other local writers for the second annual Year in Review at the Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio. Today we are going to hear from one of those writers - poet, author, educator, and artist Elizabeth Gordon. Elizabeth K. Gordon is a college literature instructor based in Cohoes, New York, and the author of two books: Love Cohoes and Walk with Us. A pioneer in the local poetry scene, she was a member of the Capital District's first slam team, the Nitty Gritty Slam, representing them at the National Poetry Slam and the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWPS). Later, she competed at WOWPS on behalf of New York City's Urbana Slam. Beyond performing, Elizabeth has served as a writing coach and mentor, most recently guiding Troy's Café Euphoria slam team. In addition to her literary work, she is also a painter specializing in abstract art. Local poet Dan Wilcox wrote on his blog about the reading: “Elizabeth Gordon, otherwise known on the Slam circuit as Elizag, not surprisingly brought the performance level up a few more notches with her pieces of radical social engagement, such as her opening piece beginning “It was the Summer tuna cost less than cat food…” & a meditation on shopping with her younger self. She too had a poem about her cellphone, & another an “Ode to My Painting Pants,” followed by the linking alliteration of a poem on Putin. She ended with a poem from memory in her best Slam performance style, “A Hiding Place,” on the shooting at a gay bar in Orlando.”

J. Lester Allen is an American writer and poet. Originally hailing from the Central Pennsylvania region, he currently calls the waterfall rich holler of Ludlowville, NY home. He published his first collection of poems, The Days Carnivore, in 2008 and has since published three other collections of poetry and short stories, most notably This Is a Land of Wolves Now (Kung Fu Treachery 2019). Megyn Kelly discusses the curious new report about Cuba having 300 drones and why that's BS "pretext" to potential military action by the U.S., why Cuba is not going to attack America and why that idea is insulting to the American people, misleading reporting and collusion between the corporate media and our government, and more. Then Ryan Grim, co-host of "Breaking Points," and Curt Mills, executive director of The American Conservative, join to discuss what it really means for America to "take" Cuba, why America can get what it wants in Cuba without military action, and more. Then Mark Halperin, host of "Next Up," joins to discuss why Senator Bill Cassidy lost his primary, why Trump's influence is still so strong within the GOP, the possibility of Thomas Massie losing his primary tomorrow, the crucial demographic of the white working class President Trump is losing now, why it could seriously hurt the GOP in future elections, whether the GOP is heading for a loss of both the Senate and House in November, why Spencer Pratt could actually win the Los Angeles mayor race, his dominant ads and social media game, and more. Then Jonathan Alpert, author of "Therapy Nation," joins to discuss how modern therapy culture is causing more mental health struggles in society, why mental health is being used to excuse personal behavior, the rise of self-diagnosis, why “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is actually a real disorder, leftists needing to see therapists after Trump won the presidential race, and more. This episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast kicks off with faith, humor, and urgency, setting the tone for a wide‑ranging conversation that blends culture, politics, and entertainment. One of the biggest headlines is the announcement of Rick Ross vs. French Montana in the upcoming Verzuz battle, sparking debate about hits, catalogs, and who really has the upper hand. The crew also reacts to Jay‑Z’s advice to seasoned artists, where he stresses the importance of authenticity and warns against chasing youth trends instead of telling real, lived stories—wisdom that resonates far beyond music and into everyday life and career longevity. The show also highlights a major in‑studio moment as R&B legends Xscape join the RSMS crew, reflecting on their decades‑long career, sisterhood, motherhood, and what has sustained their success. On the civic side, the conversation turns serious with a breakdown of early voting in Georgia, emphasizing how recent Supreme Court decisions and redistricting battles make local and state elections more critical than ever. This special episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring the life of trumpet composer, performer and innovator Kenny Wheeler, a conversation with biographers Nick Smart and Brian Shaw, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Kenny Wheeler Special" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here --- Kenny Wheeler has been an inspiration to trumpet players for generations, but in typical Kenny style, we haven't known a lot about his back story, career path and personality. Until now. Nick Smart and Brian Shaw, trumpet trailblazers in their own right, have collaborated on a new biography of Kenny Wheeler called Song For Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler, which draws from interviews and archival material and research to tell a compelling and touching story. Kenny went from small town Canada to becoming one of the most influential yet enigmatic jazz musicians in Europe. Along the way, he navigated through all kinds of obstacles, personal and professional, with quiet and understated courage, to truly become a distinct performer. Kenny's solos, improvisation and technical abilities were so unique that he garnered unmatched praise and respect as his career evolved. And yet, underneath it all were what we would now consider mental health struggles, lack of confidence, imposter syndrome - all things that weren't discussed or acknowledged at the time. Those who knew Kenny personally were full of universal acclaim for his warmth, kindness and subtle humor. Brian and Nick join John Snell on today's special episode to share some of the stories from their book, which paints a full picture of Kenny Wheeler's life and music. About Kenny Wheeler: From Song For Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler: Trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014) was one of the most enigmatic and influential musicians in recent memory. His instantly recognisable sound was a driving force within every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half of the 20th century. More importantly, his life provides us with a profound example of the way music can manifest itself in the most unlikely of vessels. About Nick Smart: Head of Jazz Programmes at the Royal Academy of Music, Nick Smart is an internationally renowned Grammy nominated jazz trumpeter, conductor and educator who has given guest masterclasses and performances around the world. Nick was a close colleague and friend of the late Kenny Wheeler and has been instrumental in keeping Wheeler's legacy alive. As well as being a member of Kenny's big band, Nick helped manage the latter stages of Kenny's career, secured the Kenny Wheeler Archive into the Royal Academy of Music Collections, and completed a PhD focused on Wheeler's development. He also led and produced the Grammy nominated album recording, Kenny Wheeler Legacy - Some Days Are Better - released to critical acclaim on the US label Greenleaf Music in January 2025, featuring the Academy Jazz Orchestra in collaboration with the University Miami's Frost Jazz Orchestra. About Brian Shaw: Brian Shaw is an active performer, arranger, and educator known for his versatility. He is one of the few trumpet players in the world equally comfortable in early music, orchestral, jazz, and commercial settings on modern and period instruments, and enjoys an international performing career as a modern and historical trumpet soloist. Brian holds principal positions with the Dallas Winds, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Spire Baroque Orchestra. He is also a regular guest instructor of Historical Trumpet at the Eastman School of Music. From 2007-2021, he was Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University and was Principal Trumpet of the Baton Rouge (Louisiana) Symphony from 2014-2021.
