Hi Everyone. I'm having a TYP breather today, so we're re-visiting this chat I had a while back with Dr. Adam Mastroianni. He is a postdoctoral research scholar at Columbia Business School who studies how people perceive and misperceive their social worlds, from the person sitting across the table to the broader community buzzing around them. He writes a great blog called Experimental History, is a stand-up comic, a Harvard Graduate and I think even he'd admit that he's kind of a quirky academic-comedian-philosopher hybrid. Nicholas Alahverdian's obituary appeared on a memorial site called Ever Loved. It detailed how the man, who grew up in foster care became a Harvard Graduate and a vocal critic of Rhode Island's childcare system after suffering sexual abuse as a child. It also detailed how Alahverdian died of Hodgin's Lymphoma at 32 years old, leaving behind a wife and two young children who remained at his bedside as he died. Alahverdian's death was a lie, an elaborate scheme created by Nicholas Rossi, a man charged with sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in Orem, Utah as well as multiple complaints against him in Rhode Island for alleged domestic violence. David Rossi, the stepfather says at an early age Nicholas would hit his mother, grandmother, and siblings, and wouldn't listen in school. Alahverdian was placed in psychiatric care. Nicholas Alahverdian, using the name Rossi, was accused of assaulting a young woman he met at Sinclair Community College in Ohio. The two had lunch together. Alahverdian offered to walk the co-ed to her next class. The coed claims Alahverdian then pinned her against a wall in a basement, groped her, and masturbated. Alahverdian apologized and asked the girl not to tell anybody. She made a police report and Alahverdian, aka Rossi, was convicted of public indecency and sexual imposition, and was required to register as a sex offender. Two years later, police are called to an apartment in Rhode Island. Officers can hear arguing and screaming. When a woman comes to the door, she has marks on her face neck, and left eye and her right eye is swelling. The woman tells police she and Alahverdian were arguing and when she tried to leave he slapped her in the face. Police arrest Alahverdian who proclaims his innocence and begins banging his head on the bars in the back of the squad car. Officers have to use pepper spray to make him stop trying to hurt himself. Alahverdian pleads no-contest to domestic simple assault. Testing reveals Alahverdian's DNA is present in a rape case, and other allegations have already been lodged. Fraud charges also land in Alahverdian's lap, and this is when he fakes his death and heads overseas. The death of Nicholas Alahverdian is met with skepticism. Alahverdian's foster mother Sharon Lane said she was contacted by Alahverdian's biological mother. The minute Sharon Lane read the obituary, she believed it was written by Alahverdian himself. Utah authorities continued investigating the first rape allegation against Nicholas Alahverdian and issued a warrant for his arrest seven months after he supposedly died. An FBI search of Alahverdian's iCloud account and cell phone records led investigators to Scotland. As investigations were looking for Nicholas Alahverdian and Nichols Rossi in the United States, a man named Arthur Knight was being treated for Covid-19 at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. He had been living a happy new life, married a woman named Miranda, and worked as a tutor, but then he suffered a serious case of pneumonitis, caused by Covid-19. Someone recognized him through his distinctive tattoos. They were a match to those from a Pawtucket police booking photo of him. In December 2021, they arrested the convicted sex offender in the Glasgow hospital. Authorities say Knight was just one of Alahverdian's 16 known aliases, which include Nicholas Rossi, Nicholas Brown, Arthur Brown, and Arthur Knight-Brown. Nicholas Alahverdian fought extradition back to the US. For over two years, Alahverdian exhausted every legal avenue available in the UK. Ultimately the courts ruled he was a wanted fugitive and agreed to the United States' request to send him home. Today, Debbie speaks to Winifred White Neisser, a classmate from the Harvard/Radcliffe Class of 1974. Winifred looks back on her career as a television executive in the all-male, all-white Hollywood entertainment industry and talks about what comes next. Both Debbie and Winifred are looking forward to celebrating their 50th Harvard reunion next year.Wini, as her friends call her, is very modest. She doesn't think of herself as a [b]old woman. So it took Debbie a while to get her to talk about her success as an entertainment executive. She capped her 34-year career as Senior VP of Sony Pictures for Television Movies and Miniseries. Her award-winning projects include the movie A Raisin in the Sun for ABC and Call me Claus, a Christmas movie which starred Whoopi Goldberg. It's her Midwestern upbringing, Wini told Debbie. They don't brag or show off in Milwaukee, WI where she grew up. She was never propelled by ambition, she told Debbie. Nor did she plan out next steps as she rose to her position as a top exec. But it wouldn't be accurate to say that her career “just happened.”//////////Don't miss the accompanying essays for the podcast in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter on Substack. You can subscribe free.//////////This interview is a story of quiet capability and determination - and underneath, a fierce drive. Debbie was fascinated by her classmate's story because, with one exception, it's so different from hers. Debbie married at the absurdly young age of 21 (she was a junior at Harvard). She had her first baby at 25 and two more by age 31. Wini married much later and had her two children in her mid 30s, all the while climbing the TV executive ladder, first at NBC and later at Sony.In contrast, Debbie's early motherhood derailed her career in journalism. She was married to a busy young doctor so someone had to hold down the fort at home. She stepped willingly into that role, but felt a good deal of frustration trying to work part-time as a freelance journalist. Underneath, she had the same fierce drive that Wini had. She just couldn't express it, career-wise, until some years later. As the conversation continued, Debbie realized that fierce drive and determination sum up the common thread she shares with her female classmates from the Harvard/Radcliffe Class of 1974. There were only 300 women (Cliffies, as they were called) in a class of 1,500 students. So they were vastly outnumbered. They were polite about it, but they were all determined to be successful in their chosen fields — both in Harvard's male-dominated classrooms and later in the world of work. So much has changed for women in the past 50 years so this conversation with Wini is the first of several Debbie is planning with these [b]old women, her 1974 Radcliffe classmates. Note: it's a bit confusing to explain but Radcliffe was the name of the women's college that was part of Harvard in the 1970s and earlier, so technically the women attended Harvard/Radcliffe. Radcliffe has now been subsumed by Harvard. And the ratio of women to men in a Harvard class is now 50-50. So much has changed in 50 years.Hope you enjoy this compelling conversation with a 70-year-old (b)old woman. Recently we had a fascinating conversation with Helen Zuman. Bio:After graduating from Harvard in 1999, Helen Zuman joined a cult—oops!—stayed for five years, then composted the stinky guck of that experience into fertile soil via Mating in Captivity, her award-winning memoir. Next, she published What Is a Sex Cult? How Cults Reveal Our Culture. As of 2023, she is working on a novel, provisionally titled Common App, in which a college application essay editor compromises the Republicrat candidate's chances of winning the 2024 presidential election by taking creative license with his son's Common App Personal Statement. Born in London and raised in Brooklyn, Helen currently homesteads with her husband in Beacon, New York, while dreaming of her next trip to Scotland. There once was a lion cub who got separated from his mother. A sheep found him and took him in as her own. The lion cub grew into a lion and one day an amazing thing happened. In the distance, he heard the roar of a lion. Suddenly, something powerful emerged within the lost lion—surprising himself, he started roaring as well. Realizing his destiny, he left his sheep mother without looking back and went in search of his lion heritage. In a similar way, our guest on Love University, Jesse Leon, underwent an amazing transformation to discover his inner lion. Raised in a horrific environment of sexual abuse, drug addiction, homelessness, and hopelessness, Jesse awakened to his true nature by graduating from prestigious universities and making a tremendous impact on his community and the world. He also embraced his authentic nature as a gay Latino male who wants to inspire others to shine their light and love to their communities. We were honored to hear his story, as described in his bestselling memoir, I'm Not Broken (https://rb.gy/uruyp). Here's what we learned from Jesse: Channel Your Inner Nerd: We all have innate intelligence. You're smart and resilient no matter where you come from and what you've been through. You just need to code switch—apply your knowledge and experience to the environment you're in and do it for the good of all. Be Ready for Unexpected Mentors: Be open for moments of magic when remarkable people come into your life to help you. They may not look like individuals you expect to help you, but they can help transform your life if you let them. Just Go For It: If you have a desire, don't think twice, just go for it. Jesse thought his ceiling was to graduate from community college (cosmetology), but he didn't realize that he could do much more. With motivating people to guide him, he applied to UC Berkeley and Harvard, and graduated from these prestigious institutions. Jesse says that if you want something, just put yourself out there. Go for it, and you will be pleasantly surprised that you accomplished it. Jesse's message can be summarized in a simple phrase: Don't Stop Until the Miracle Happens. No one gave Jesse a chance, but he found faith, friendship, and hope in embracing his true authenticity and power within. You can do the same. No matter what you've gone through, no matter where you come from, You Are Not Broken. You are perfect just the way are. Embrace yourself, love yourself, and extend your love to others without expectation. Nothing can stop you now.

Devi Cavitt Razo Hoffman Grad and former Hoffman teacher, Devi Cavitt Razo, did the Hoffman Process in 1996. She went on to teach the Process for 17 years. During her time at Hoffman, Devi also served as Process and Faculty Director, VP, and Director of Teacher Training. In this episode, Devi shares a pivotal moment from her Process. It was a particularly difficult day during her time there. Devi noticed that she wasn't crying nearly as much as her Process mates. They all seemed to be shedding many tears. Then, later that day, Devi fell to her knees weeping deeply as she realized how much she wanted things to be different in her life and how much she loved her parents. This was a huge breakthrough for her as she realized that our feelings don't come when we think they should. Rather, if we stay open with the intention to heal, things move and change in their own time. How did she first hear about the Process? Upon leaving the Process, Devi's friend came to visit her to tell her she just had to do the Process. Hearing this, Devi immediately knew it was right for her and signed up. In the Process, it became clear to her that she was meant to teach the Process. Fast forward about 20 years later, although Devi was happy and felt fulfilled in this work, she began to hear the small voice within telling her there was something new on the horizon. The only thing was - she loved her work teaching the Process. How do we decide to go when we love something so much? That's a question so many of us ask at least once in our lives. Logan always knew that he wanted to live life differently and sought ways to challenge himself. After the 9/11 attack, he knew that the military was the logical route. When he joined, he attended the premier military leadership school, Ranger School. He decided to go to Special Forces (SF) selection and after multiple deployments with SF along with almost 10 years of service, he applied to Harvard and was accepted for his undergraduate degree. But he didn't stop there, he continued his education for 7 years and also earned his MBA and Law degree. We spent the bulk of the episode talking about being an entrepreneur, why people may avoid the risks that come with it, and the principles that help with success. Logan talks about how we need to avoid comfort zones and take some risks. Luck plays a factor, but when opportunities are presented, you need to be prepared to take advantage of it. Logan also advocates for veterans applying to Ivy League schools; he was surprised at how few were in college with him. Being successful in the military is a lot like being an entrepreneur , you need to be self-driven and seek out opportunities to grow. However, being an entrepreneur isn't structured and if you need that, then maybe this route isn't for you. About Michael Balchan Michael Balchan is the Co-Creator and a Founding Partner of Heroic, a social training platform built to change the world by helping you be the best, most Heroic version of yourself. A Harvard Graduate who studied Psychology and Economics, Michael spent ten years in finance and then launched a private coaching practice working with corporate executives, elite athletes, and startup leadership teams. Change Starts With You In this episode, Michael explains how change starts with one person at a time and the first person is you. Before you can lead others, you have to lead yourself. This begins by recognizing your emotional state, your physiological state, and understanding how you're showing up. Michael promises that, if we begin by taking personal responsibility, our impact will be that much more powerful. It will powerfully influence relationships, your business, and everyone connected to you. For Heroes, It's All About the Process Michael wants us all to be heroes. In its truest sense, a hero is a protector motivated by love. When you're willing to express the best version of yourself and use that in service, you are heroic. Yet, we often find something standing in the way of taking the actions we want to take. Michael wants you to remember that this doesn't mean that something is wrong with you. Rather, you may just not be designing your environment properly. With that in mind, he describes some small steps you can take right away to build an environment designed to help you succeed. Making changes and growing will be uncomfortable. That's how you know it's working. But by not letting discomfort get you off track, you can continue making gains. Michael takes this a step further by designing systems that make it feel good to do what is actually good for us. This centers around celebrating every accomplishment no matter how trivial it may seem. What small win can you celebrate today! Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode What happens when you take a long view of your journey to success [3:25] Why making change starts by recognizing your own personal situation [8:10] What it actually means to be a hero [19:20] What stands between people and taking the actions they want to [21:30] The power of celebrating all successes, no matter how small [26:00] Why your process is more important than your goals [36:30] Getting clear on what it is you really want in order to create true satisfaction [48:00] Quotes “To see the long arc and to recognize that, if I want to be successful at this it won't take a month or a year. It's going to take three, four, five, ten, twenty years -- a long time.” [6:27] “As a business owner, your greatest asset is you; it's your consciousness.” [8:31] “We have to measure ourselves by our process, by the degree we show up to doing the things we say we're going to do, instead of the outcome.” [38:19] “We get better when we realize that failures are opportunities to learn.” [56:58] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts!
