This month we are excited to discuss the monumental music documentary series, VH1's Behind the Music, which aired from 1997 to 2014. This topic is too expansive for a single podcast episode so we are making it a multi-parter. This week the Docn' crew got together to assign viewing homework to each host for a show-and-tell to be released 14 days from now. With the help of random episode generation technology, Adam, Carolyn, and Andrew find out what Behind the Music they will be watching in this episode. We thought it best to live-record the random picks and resulting emotions therein.

Courtney Stodden steps Behind The Rope. You have read so much about Courtney. We all have. In true Rope fashion, rather than figure out what is true, untrue and somewhere in between, we've gone right to the source to break it all down. Courtney first came into the public eye at age 16 when they married then 51 year old Doug Hutchison in 2011. Courtney talks about what living with such strict media attention and judgement was like at such a young age. In other words, being trolled before trolling was a thing. We chat with Courtney about Britney Spears and how similar their own situation was, married at 16, to the conservatorship that Britney is now living with each day. The constant media attention earned them and their then husband a place on the second season of the VH1 hit, “Couples Therapy” along with famous co-stars such as your RHONY favs Alex and Simon van Kempen. We discuss! Courtney chats about their many other reality TV appearances on shows like Celebrity Big Brother and let us not forget that 50 Cent video they were in. Sort of! We can explain! Courtney chats about fame, the potential addiction to fame, living a life in the public eye, their public persona versus the real Courtney Stodden, the various and constant misconceptions about them and whether they is “in on the joke”. Having just had their 26th birthday, Courtney looks back on the past ten years and discusses their decision to divorce their then husband. Of course, we discuss the headlines Courtney made recently regarding their “relationship” with 90210's Brian Austin Green, their public “demise” and the involvement of both Megan Fox and Vanessa Marcil. Courtney also chats about their recent coming out as Non-Binary in the hopes of living a more authentic life. Courtney also chats about others who have slid into their DMs such as, wait for it, Courtney Love! Finally, they chat about being cyber-bullied by Chrissy Teigen, the long term effects that has had on them and what they would say to Chrissy Teigen if they came face to face today.  @courtneyastodden @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by OMAZE - https://omaze.com/velvetrope (Receive 20 Extra Entries When You Enter Code “Velvetrope” Brought to you by ROTHY'S - https://www.rothys.com/velvet ($20 Off Your First Purchase) Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Did We Get Tammy Faye Wrong?

In this third decade of the 21st century, we've seen a lot of religious scandals, with Christian leaders abusing their power and position. Too many. Nevertheless, still to this day when you say the words religious scandal—more often than not folks will think of two television personalities of the 1970s and '80s: Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. The “Jim and Tammy” show was the basis of what became a massive ministry and theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina. It was called PTL, an abbreviation that stood both for Praise the Lord and for People That Love. Then came revelations that PTL had been massively and illegally misusing funds, diverting church funds to pay for their extravagant lifestyle and selling more lifetime vacations at the theme park than the theme park could possibly support. At about the same time, The Charlotte Observer also revealed that Jim Bakker had been engaging in extramarital sex and that ministry funds had been used for hush money. The Assemblies of God kicked them out of the denomination. Jim Bakker went to jail. During Jim's imprisonment, the couple divorced. Tammy Faye, meanwhile, became a kind of campy celebrity, appearing in a VH1 reality TV show, hosting a syndicated talk show, and becoming a kind of gay icon. In the year 2000, seven years before her death, a documentary came out called The Eyes of Tammy Faye, narrated by drag queen star RuPaul. Last week, a biopic based on that documentary came out with the same title: The Eyes of Tammy Faye. It's directed by Michael Showalter, stars Jessica Chastain, and is getting a fair bit of buzz for its highly sympathetic portrayal of Tammy Faye as a misunderstood and maligned Christian woman. Christianity Today's Ted Olsen and Kate Shellnutt talked about Tammy Faye's enduring appeal with Leah Payne, associate professor of theology at George Fox University and Portland Seminary. She is author of Gender and Pentecostal Revivalism, is working on a book on CCM for Oxford University Press and cohosts the Weird Religion podcast. What is Quick to Listen? Read more. One of the many cries of Gen-X: "Remember when MTV used to play videos?" Music videos were made for Gen-X, and for years, cable stations (and even some network shows) catered to playing music videos. Videos changed the face of music in the 80s, but to hear some people talk, you'd think they are a long-gone thing. With YouTube and other ways of sharing content, clearly that's not true. We can now watch the videos we remember with a simple Google search, and new videos pop up every day. (Hell, you can now make your own videos and put them out there as easy as a podcast...) So...the Gorillamen finally sat down to talk about music videos...specifically: What was the first music video you remember seeing? What impression did that video have? Did you watch a lot of music videos growing up? Do you watch a lot of them now? What was your first impression of MTV? Of VH1? What was the most non-mainstream way you watched music videos? (public access, late-night TV, etc) What's the best music video of all time? The worst? The most insane? How important were music videos to you when you were younger? If you had to make a music video for any song, which song, and what would the video concept be? Do you think music videos are important to the kids now? What's the future of music videos?

Here's a snapshot of a few things we talked about…         Introduction         How Did Things Start Out for Casanova?         How His Backstory Made Him What He is Today?         His Journey of Recovery from Cancer         How Did He Know that Working for Someone Else was Not for Him?         How The Journey is What Really Makes You Who You Are         How He Got Started in Real Estate?         Why Did He Leave His Sales Job?         How He was Inspired by Jay Morrison to be the Lord of His Land In This Episode You'll Learn: In this episode from the series of Casanova's appearance as a guest on other podcasts, Casanova and host Jamila Souffrant talk about how he overcame adversity, the power of building relationships and how to leverage them, and why having a positive mindset is the key. Casanova's backstory is what led him to become who he and what he has accomplished. He grew up in inner city, Chicago, and was raised by a single mom, and his grandma stepped in to help lead the way of being his dad. He had the odds stacked against him, but he did have a strong mind. He had two strong minded women who always tried to protect him. The first stage of adversity that he went through was losing two of his best friends. By the end of his sixth-grade year, his grandmother decided to move him to Sioux City, to keep him safe from the turbulent streets of inner-city Chicago. While he was sophomore in high school, and things were going great for him, adversity struck again. At 15 years old, he was diagnosed with stage four, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer; where he was two weeks away from death. While going through two years of chemotherapy, what started to change was that everyone looked at him like a victim. He started to wonder how could he cope with these things mentally? Life took a huge turn for him, but he didn't know how to cope with a lot of those things, but that's where his mindset really started to take that shift. These things started to build his armor and build his character. Casanova had an entrepreneurial mindset from early on in his life, largely inspired by the VH1 show "The Fabulous Life Of". At 8 years old, pumping gas for other people at the gas station, he started to see that he could create his own success. He continued to try different things throughout the high school and then going into college. During his junior year, he started to realize that just having a degree is not going to guarantee him success in life. Along this path, he had 18 different jobs, trying to figure out his calling. Casanova adds that his motivation behind these decisions was that he wanted to control his own time. He also felt like he was never being valued at what he was worth, and he wanted to have an impact on the world. Talking about the journey, Cass shares that he learned that you have to be committed to the destination. Jamila adds that who you become on the journey allows you to get to the destination. Cass says that it all starts with a dream, for a lot of people, all you have to do is think of the big picture. What is the point I impact you want to have on others? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Cass shares his eventful journey to real estate; from playing poker, to wanting to be a professional video gamer, to serving tables, to getting talked into being a car's salesman. He was not only selling cars there, but he was also building relationships. Then he was introduced to network marketing, and this is where he learned a lot about personal development. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska to work as a marketing consultant for a big company. He garnered great success in the company, finishing at number eight out of 4000, inside sales reps. While he was taking every step, he knew that he always wanted something bigger. Then, he stumbled upon a Jay Morrison video on YouTube, where he had said, you got to figure out a way to be the Lord of your land. This was a light bulb moment for Casanova. From that point forward, he got his real estate license, with the goal that he was going to be the lord of his land. Talking about what helped him succeed, he says “what is your gift, right? And so, your gift is what comes easy for you and harder for others.” His final stint of adversity came in the form of losing his mother, after they had recently moved to Omaha to live near him. On top of that, he also ended up losing his job and his house, all within a matter of weeks. What helped him rebound from search severe losses to the point where he did 46 deals, eight million dollars in volume in his first year, was horning in his biggest strength, which was building relationships. Cass adds that the only thing you can never control the result, but the only thing that you can control is your effort, and you always have to find some type of positivity out of every single situation. In every situation, no matter where you are in life, you can find some type of hope. He adds “It allowed me to just keep going when I lost my mom to know that everything that I do every minute of every hour, every person who I tried to impact their lives, and I can use her as the beacon of hope that was for me.” Key Quotes:         “I always like to think of myself as a relationship builder before anything else…”         “I didn't grow up with a sense of ignorant mindset that said that just because you didn't look like me, did not mean that you had to be against me, and you couldn't be with me…”         “Where I got a lot of my inspiration from was the TV because my parents, my family never owned a house, a car, a business, nothing…”         “My mom always tried to, you know, instill some type of positivity in me, even though she didn't have it to give to me as far as financial literacy or resources…”         “We want our kids to try some of everything, right? Whether it's sports, or its show choir, whether it's band, whether it's, doesn't matter what it is, we want to try everything to figure out the ropes…”         “I of the belief and the understanding that just because I had a degree did not mean I was going to be successful in life…”         “I wanted to control my own time. Right? Because maybe that came from having the cancer where I knew that tomorrow was never promised…”         “I looked at it and I said, listen, if I want to be able to have a true impact on this world, I have to be able to leverage my time…”         “You don't have to love the journey. You don't have to love the process. You just have to be married to the destination…”         “In the corporate world, everybody could tell you no, but nobody could tell you yes…”         “The number one thing that I always thought of is that joy wouldn't feel so good if it wasn't for pain…”         “My gift was building relationships with people. My gift was having high energy high charisma, and I understood that because people were already saying, wow, Casanova like your energy is contagious, it's infectious. And so, I just built off of that...”         “So, all within a couple of weeks timeframe, I lose my job, I lose my mom and I lose my home…”         “For you think of what is your gift, what comes easy for you and harder for other people and then double down on that strength…”         “With Kobe and with his daughter and with the other people on there, it was a profound impact in the way that it unified all of us to really just think that there's so many bigger things that we can be grateful for in life, because it can be gone too soon…”         “Understand that your journey, a lot of the times, it's not for you…”   Links/Resources:         https://journeytolaunch.com/         Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Following up on their 2018 their "Ascension" album, the band return with 'Say You Love Me', the lead single from their new album, the second installmentof their Orchestral Hits opus. 'String Theory' includes 11 new recordings of some of their classic hits and fan favorites. The 'Say You Love Me' single comes with a eight different versions, remixes and a music video. The track is full to the brim of soaring strings, uplifting grooves and widescreen scope. Mikes positive message in the vocals knitting the new recording together with aplomb. Remixes are both of the 80s style "extended" variety and also newly reproduced versions, with Soda Pimps offering a electronic diversion on the track. A Flock Of Seagulls may well be known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as much as their hit single "I Ran". A Flock Of Seagulls were one of prime movers in the 80's new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement. Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock Of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later.. "Telecommunication" became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was released as the first single from the album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along with it. In the UK, "I Ran" didn't make the Top 40, but "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" reached number ten later that year; in America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after "Space Age Love Song" peaked at number 30. "Wishing" was taken from the group's second album "Listen" in 1983. The band released 1984's "The Story of A Young Heart" which fielded the hit "The More You Live, The More You Love". A Flock Of Seagulls are famous for their music but also famous for their references in popular culture from TV (Ross's Haircut in Friends), Computer Games ("I Ran" was the standout track on Grand Theft Auto Radio), Film (The band and haircut are referenced in Pulp Fiction, X-Men and The Wedding Singer) . This cemented the bands reputation and brought the band to a whole new legion of fans. In 2003, the original line-up of Mike, Ali, Frank and Paul reunited for a one-off performance on the VH1 series Bands Reunited. In September 2004, they reformed again and did a brief tour in the United States. From 2004 to 2021 Mike was as busy as ever touring the band around the world. Laretta Houston was born in Angeles City, Philippines. From struggle and poverty evolved an inspirational vision of beauty and life all around her. Laretta's story could easily have taken such a different turn if not for her determination and strength. Born the daughter of a military father and a Filipino mother who traveled a lot, she spent most of her time with relatives modestly raised in poverty without luxury. After losing her mother at age 13 to Lupus, this is when she entered her journey through the foster care system, eventually making her way to the United States, where she was determined to change the course of her life. Struggling to balance work, school, and being a single mother, she found her love in photography. Having a multimedia background would also prove to be an invaluable help in marketing her passion as well as giving incredible insights into advertising and marketing needs. She has photograph clients such as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, ABC (Dancing with the Stars, VH1, Allergan, Broadway Shoes, Spanx, Proctor and Gamble, CDC, Modelland, and more. She sees beauty in everything and as a woman who wears her emotions on her sleeve, her mind's eye sees each project as a very personal journey.

She Did It Her Way

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2021 42:25

Hello friends, welcome back to another episode of the podcast!  This week I'm so excited to sit down with the lovely LaToya Shambo, founder of Black Girl Digital. Black Girl Digital is a premier influencer-marketing agency geared towards a black female audience that has worked with VH1, MTV and a whole host of other brands. In their five years in business, Black Girl Digital has earned more than 100 million impressions and during COVID-19 launched a digital platform where they can carefully vet all influencers and manage the campaign relationship between brands and black female influencers. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Houston, LaToya originally intended to go into the music business and while that may not have worked out as planned, what did happen was even better. She went into marketing and advertising and from there planned to move into radio sales. While in school, LaToya heard the director speak and was excited to make her move. She reached out to him and asked about applying for a position – the stop was that she was still a few months out from graduation and the position required the candidate be a graduate. Transitioning again, she began working as an intern and when graduation finally rolled around and it came time to start finding a job she landed at an agency doing media buying for McDonalds. This was new for LaToya. She didn't know anything about the world of advertising from that perspective. Her experience began on the agency side of the marketing world and from there skyrocketed. LaToya now knew she didn't want to follow the traditional path of TV or radio advertising. She knew she wanted to be in the digital space. She shifted gears to pharmaceuticals and learned about being meticulous in media planning, especially in the realm of product launches.Eventually, LaToya received a call to work at Spike Lee's agency, DBB, and after dabbling there she decided it still was not far enough into the digital space for her. Once again, it was time for a pivot. She then landed at Complex and after 7 years and working in 3 departments she had helped to build a lot of the processes and protocols across the functional departments. She knew she was working in the direction of her goals and was finally seeing what the digital world looked like, just didn't know yet the full scope. As an entrepreneur at heart, LaToya had dabbled in starting businesses here and there but still didn't really understand or realize her full purpose yet. She knew she wanted to be in the business of advertising, but she also knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. But what did that actually look like? Complex was an eye opener and she decided that this was what she wanted it to look like. But does she just stop there, or should she keep going? After a series of unexpected events, LaToya realized she was still standing for a reason and it was time for her to start operating within that reason and discover her true purpose. “I know what my purpose is; I'm going to create an agency just like this.”One thing I absolutely love about LaToya's journey is that she is so unapologetic when she realizes its just time to move on. She doesn't let her thoughts keep her from moving closer to her dreams. She also doesn't allow herself to get mentally stuck and does allow herself to explore different roles and avenues. The vulnerability and transparency LaToya shared about her journey, and all of the obstacles she pushed through, is absolutely inspiring and beautiful. She learned how to navigate through problems and not let them stop her from achieving her goals. Her journey is such a beautiful reminder that we can't change our circumstances, but we can change how we react to what life gives us.To learn how you can work with Black Girl Digital, find them on Instagram (@BlackGirlDigital) or connect with LaToya personally (@LaToyaShambo).Until next time friends, keep doing it your way!  Insights:“She knew she was working in the direction of her goals and was finally seeing what the digital world looked like, just didn't know yet the full scope.““She knew she wanted to be in the business of advertising, but she also knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. But what did that actually look like?““I know what my purpose is; I'm going to create an agency just like this.” Resources:Get the deets on Black Girl Digital on InstagramConnect with LaToya on InstagramVisit the Black Girl Digital websiteGoogle WorkspaceMilanoteThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.
