Ellen Coyne and Harry McGee join Pat Leahy to look back on the week in politics: · When Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald was asked on Monday if she was ruling herself out of this year's contest to succeed Michael D Higgins, she replied, “we're not ruling anything in or anything out.” But could a tilt at the presidency be a potential career-ender for Mary Lou?· Elsewhere, those ruling themselves firmly in include Galway West Independent TD Catherine Connolly, who says she plans to launch her presidential election bid next week. The veteran Donegal TD Pat the Cope Gallagher says he is considering seeking Fianna Fáil nomination to run, but Fine Gael's Seán Kelly has ruled himself out, with Mairead McGuinness now widely expected to seek Áras election.· The Occupied Territories Bill is now undergoing pre-legislative scrutiny. The big question remains whether the proposed bill will include services along with the prohibition of trade in goods with Israeli companies operating in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories. Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· The throwaway lyrics of Oasis, the social cohesion of the July 12th bonfires, and when crying in public is the natural thing to do. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jack Horgan-Jones and Harry McGee join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics: · The drive to inject some impetus into the Irish presidential race has not yielded anything of note just yet with the starter pistol not expected to sound until Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Sinn Féin nominate their candidates. · The Coalition remains divided over Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless's recent assertion that the student contribution could increase by as much as €1,000 next year for third-level students. · The pause on Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs is almost up – is there a plan in place to keep Ireland's pain to a minimum?Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· The puffins of Rathlin Island, the digital revolution that didn't turn out as expected, and how the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez destroyed quiet luxury. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this week's episode, Jeongmin and Joon Ha analyze the chaotic weekend that led to Kim Moon-soo becoming the People Power Party's presidential candidate after a dramatic series of reversals. Jeongmin breaks down an overnight decision by the PPP leadership to retract Kim's candidacy, followed by a party poll that ultimately reinstated him after Han Duck-soo's withdrawal. The duo then explores the newly released ten-point policy visions of the three main presidential candidates, with Lee Jae-myung emphasizing post-crisis recovery and state-led technological sector innovation, Kim Moon-soo focusing on pro-business deregulation and stronger national defense, and minor candidate Lee Jun-seok positioning himself as a reformer for younger generations. The team also unpacks the recent temporary agreement between the U.S. and China to dramatically reduce tariffs for a 90-day window and the South Korean officials' cautious response amid ongoing global trade uncertainties. They look ahead to the upcoming presidential debates and other election-related schedules throughout the rest of May, building up until the June 3 snap election. Hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum question whether the Democratic Party is still capable of keeping together its diverse Rainbow Coalition. Many folks in the base of the party felt abandoned by a Harris/Walz campaign that tried to appeal to moderate Republicans. Then pundits blamed “wokeness” for Kamala Harris' loss. Are there too many conflicting interests to hold together under the Democrats' “big tent”? This discussion was in part inspired by one of you, our #NLPFam listeners. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum react to the results of the 2024 election and respond to your questions. President Biden has begun the peaceful transition of power, in the oval office he told Trump, “Welcome back.” After telling voters that Trump is a threat to democracy, is this kind of civility appropriate? Trump has already announced many of his cabinet picks. We'll hear from those picks about what we can expect from a second Trump presidency. Lastly, where does our show go from here? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum check in on the state of the presidential race. Is there anything more Kamala can do to reach undecided voters? Do undecided voters even exist at this point?? The terms “fascist” and “fascism” are being thrown around a lot lately. Considering that we may soon have a wannabe fascist as President, let's define those words, and identify what exactly is “fascist” about Trump. Rudy Giuliani finally had his day in court. He's been ordered to pay more than a hundred million dollars to compensate Georgia election workers who he falsely accused of election fraud after the 2020 election. We'll hear from some of those election workers. Finally, where do we see fear being used as a political strategy in the 2024 election, by both campaigns? The hosts have a practical and philosophical discussion about fear and the nature of power. And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners! This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum dig into the Harris' campaigns agenda for Black men. When she doesn't address Black folks they say she's disrespectful, when she does they say she panders–our hosts have some sharp words for those who would lay the results of this election at the feet of Black folk. We have got to talk about the looming threat of political violence and election-denialism. This is guaranteed not to be a normal election, particularly if it's close. Our hosts point out important election-related court battles, and explain how the GOP strategy of denying election results is connected to the increasing threats of political violence. Finally, the hosts point out some important Senate and House races to pay attention to, and shout out Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a personal story. Two days after getting trounced in the debate, Trump turns to a familiar playbook: claim a win, trash the moderators, and—above all—refuse to debate again. The only hitch? All those Trump advisors and endorsers talking to the press about how poorly he did. Jon and Dan discuss Trump's attempt at spin, Harris's post-debate agenda, and the MAGA freakout over Taylor Swift's endorsement. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. More and more Republicans are asking Donald Trump if it might be possible for him to stop the personal attacks on Kamala Harris and focus on a persuasive message. His answer? Absolutely not. In yet another country club press conference, Trump says he's "entitled to personal attacks" because he doesn't respect Harris, calls her stupid, and rants about communists. Meanwhile, Harris and Joe Biden hold their first joint event since Biden stepped down from the race, and it's full of good policy and good vibes. Plus, Tim Walz talks tacos, and RFK Jr. might be looking for an exit strategy.
