Yeah we're a week late. We know. And we're sorry! Past Guysner winner Nate McDonough joins JB to talk about LONGBOXES, his recently self-published autobiographical book collecting all of his ongoing Longboxes stories originally published in his comic zine Grixly. We get into his lurid career as a comics flipper, the stories and characters of an unforgiving world that inform his comics, and the overlooked taxonomy of ponytail guys. Follow Nate on Instagram @grixlycola. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Email us at gutterboyspodcast@gmail.com and we'll read it on the next episode, or give the Gutter Boys a follow on Instagram and Twitter (JB: @mortcrimpjr; Cam: @camdelrosario). Titles discussed include (but are not limited to) Baker Street, Alter Ego, Ambush Bug ,& The Adventures of Mr. Crypt & Baron Rat. We took this time to have a little comic swap/mart in the driveway of That Comic Smell's home. It was one of the few times we had seen each other in person. Mike had been gifted various longboxes with A LOT of comics. They were predominantly DC titles and after we had met, had a good laugh and picked our way through them all, we went back home, read a bunch of them and discussed it over Skype. This is a little blast from the past and some things that are discussed may be long past now but it just gives us a little glimpse into a time where we were still trying our hardest to stay connected with friends and loved ones. It's also where we got free comics and showed them off! This and all the usual comics chat on… That Comic Smell! Recently Marvel comics announced a month of hip hop themed variant covers, recreating famous album covers with their titles. This brought into light an issue about the lack of African Americans hired by the company and diversity both on the page and behind the scenes. In this episode Wendi is joined by artist Julian Lytle (Ignorant Bliss podcast), Rafael Sanz (No Apologies podcast) and Darrell Taylor (Taylor network of Podcasts). For years Julian and Shawn Pryor worked on the "Longboxes on 22s" tumblr (www.longboxeson22s.tumblr.com ) that mashed up hip hop culture and comic books only to go ignored by Marvel and DC. This discussion goes far beyond the ideas of cultural appropriation into a discourse of hiring practices, how to find new talent, what the role of an editor should be and being racially tactful. Also what rappers really do fit which superheroes!
