This week we're talking about The Old Glory Ultra Relay. Army veteran Jason Wood shares how he and a team of 12 vets from Team Red White and Blue will begin running, non-stop from San Diego, CA to Washington DC. We talked about how this feat is even possible, and the route they will travel. Wood also shared how his own battle with PTSD, and depression almost ended his life. Saved after initially discovering joy from challenges like The Spartan Race, he ultimately began competing (and winning!) several ultra distance competitions. Wood also talked about Team Red, White and Blue, a veteran group that helps fellow vets overcome life's challenges through building an athletic community. Donations from the Old Glory Ultra will help Team RWB build even more events and make a significant change in the current mental health and suicide crisis among veterans. SBS Hindi interviewed Jason Wood, the Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, about key issues affecting our communities, including social cohesion, crime, the growing backlog of parents' visas, and cuts in international student numbers.
In this powerful episode of Veteran Made, Jason Wood shares his transformative journey from struggling veteran to elite ultrarunner, emphasizing the critical importance of taking full responsibility for one's health and wellness. Wood's story is a testament to the profound impact of personal accountability, particularly in the context of fatherhood. He describes how the realization that he needed to be a better example for his daughter became the catalyst for his remarkable transformation, pushing him from being out of shape and mentally struggling to competing at an elite level in ultra-endurance events. Wood's approach to change is both challenging and inspiring. He advocates for setting ambitious goals, breaking them down into manageable pieces, and consistently pushing through mental and physical barriers. His experience in ultra-running serves as a metaphor for life's challenges, demonstrating how the mental frameworks developed during extreme physical exertion can be applied to overcome obstacles in all areas of life. Wood's emphasis on community, particularly within the veteran population, highlights the importance of mutual support and accountability in achieving lasting change. Listeners will be challenged by Wood's no-excuses attitude and his call to action for veterans to lead the nation out of its current health crisis. His participation in the Old Glory Ultra Relay exemplifies how individual effort, when combined with a larger purpose, can create a powerful movement for change. This episode serves as a wake-up call for anyone struggling with their health or sense of purpose, offering a roadmap for transformation that starts with taking responsibility and embracing discomfort as a pathway to growth. Wood's journey from rock bottom to elite athlete is a compelling argument for the life-changing potential of committing to one's health and wellness, with the added motivation of being a positive role model for the next generation. Welcome to the VinnyRoc Podcast. In this powerful episode, host Vincent sits down with Jason Wood—a former U.S. Army officer, combat veteran, and endurance athlete—to share his extraordinary journey of transformation and healing. Jason served seven years on active duty, completing three combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After transitioning to civilian life in 2011, he faced personal struggles with PTSD, depression, and alcoholism before discovering the life-changing benefits of endurance sports. Drawing on his experiences, Jason explains how he turned to extreme physical challenges—running 100 miles in under 24 hours on multiple occasions, completing a 101-mile run with a 20-pound weighted vest, enduring a 150-mile treadmill run in 48 consecutive hours, and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro—as a path to recovery. His athletic feats not only helped him rebuild his physical and mental health but also serve as a way to raise awareness and funds for veteran-focused charities such as Team RWB, K9s for Warriors, and Climb4. In our conversation, we cover topics including: • The realities of military service and the challenges faced during combat tours • The difficult transition from military to civilian life and the impact of PTSD • How endurance sports became a tool for healing and self-discovery • Training strategies for building an aerobic base and mental resilience • Jason's upcoming challenge: running across the country to support Team RWB and honor the resilience of the veteran community Jason's story is one of perseverance, redemption, and the power of pushing personal limits. Whether you are a veteran, an endurance athlete, or someone looking for inspiration to overcome adversity, this episode offers insights into finding strength through movement, community, and purpose. If you find this conversation valuable, please like, comment, and subscribe for more real stories on veteran experiences, mental health, and personal transformation. Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share this amazing guest with you. My guest today is Jason Wood. He's a dad, combat vet and endurance athlete. Jason Wood's incredible fitness journey is nothing short of a remarkable adventure that unfolded after his graduation from college in 2004. Fueled by a sense of duty and patriotism, Jason joined the U.S. Army as an officer, dedicating seven years to active duty and undergoing three intense combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This period taught him invaluable lessons in discipline, resilience, and the importance of pushing one's limits. In 2011, Jason transitioned to a career as a Department of Defense contractor, marking a turning point in his life. It was during this period that he discovered a profound passion for endurance challenges, using them as a vehicle for personal growth and transformation. One defining moment in Jason's fitness journey was his completion of a staggering 101-mile run in just 36 hours while wearing a 20-pound tactical weight vest. Undeterred by the magnitude of his accomplishments, Jason set an even more daunting goal, running an astounding 150 miles in 48 hours on a treadmill. Jason's pursuit of challenges continues with his upcoming attempt to break the Guinness World Record for solo tire flipping—a 100kg (220lb) tire for 24 consecutive hours. As a father to a 9-year-old daughter, Jason's journey transcends personal achievement. His successful summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2021 inspired his daughter to embark on her own mountain-climbing adventure at just 7 years old, demonstrating the impact of leading by example. Jason couldn't have been prouder of his daughter for approaching the challenge with such enthusiasm. Jason's dedication to being a strong father goes beyond the physical accomplishments; it extends into the realm of teaching life lessons about perseverance, setting goals, and the importance of giving back. His daughter witnesses firsthand that a strong foundation built on discipline and determination can lead to personal growth and the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Behind these triumphs lies a more profound story of resilience. Jason has faced personal struggles, including alcoholism, suicidal thoughts, and the weight of PTSD, depression, and anxiety from his military experiences. The outdoors and fitness became his sanctuary, offering a lifeline to mental stability and recovery. Jason's journey reflects not only the boundless potential of the human spirit but also the profound healing power of the outdoors and physical fitness. His battles with alcoholism and PTSD found solace in the discipline and structure of his fitness regimen. The endorphins released during intense workouts became a powerful antidote to the darkness of depression and anxiety, allowing him to regain control of his mental health. Jason's mission extends beyond personal triumph. Through his journey, he seeks to inspire others to overcome their own battles and embrace a brighter future.
