Episode 43 - Murdock and Marvel: 1996 Part 2 Well, here we are, Duane.  At the End of Days.  I have been promising you that everything was going to explode eventually.  And finally we have arrived.  Welcome to the fateful year 1996, when Marvel came crashing down.  This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1996.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances:  Daredevil #348-359, Punisher #4, What if…? #83, Marvel versus DC / DC versus Marvel #2-3, Green Goblin #6 and 12, Doom 2099 #40-42, Over the Edge #6 and 10, Wolverine #103-104, New Warriors #73, Spider-Man Unlimited #13, Essential Wolverine #1, Essential X-Men #1, Spider-Man #74, Elektra Megazine #1-2, Essential Spider-Man #1 and Age of Innocence: The Rebirth of Iron Man, Spider-Man's Greatest Team-Ups and Elektra Lives Again graphic novels  Writing: J.M. DeMatteis (348-350), John Rozum (351), Ben Rabb (352), Karl Kesel (353-357), Joe Kelly (358-359)  Pencils: Cary Nord (348-349, 353-357), Ron Wagner (350), Shawn McManus (351-352), Pasqual Ferry (358), Nord and Larry Hama (359)  Inks: Bill Reinhold (348, 350), Al Williamson (349), Shawn McManus (351-352), Matt Ryan (353-357, 359), Pasqual Ferry (358)  The year begins with Matt trying to reconcile his recent identity crisis while Foggy is angry about the secret he's finally learned. Matt tries visiting with his mother Maggie, but it's his old Mentor Stick that helps him – though in the process he ends up taking on the Chaste.  Foggy and Matt begin practicing law together again. From there, things return to normal (or at least what's normal for Daredevil or Matt Murdock), He takes out Agent Vice who's extorting money from other criminals. Daredevil must take on Mastermind who is also Matt Murdock's client.   In June we get a new creative team that was teased at the end of issue 352. Karl Kesel and Cary Nord. We also get a re-imagined Mr. Hyde from John Romita Jr. Hyde seems to be totally unhinged (with an equally terrifying look). Daredevil confronts Hyde in an old Osborn warehouse where a woman has been murdered. Hyde continues to act crazy and is ultimately arrested.   During this issue Foggy and Matt (mostly Matt) are asked to partner with hotshot lawyer Rosalind (Razor) Sharpe. Sharpe tells Matt privately that the two are a package deal. She doesn't just want Foggy. Foggy seemed weirdly eager to join her so Matt accepts.  And as a first case under the new partnership, Sharpe was Murdock to represent Mr. Hyde. At first, Murdock doesn't want to do it, but after meeting with Hyde – Matt doesn't think he killed the girl. The leads to Daredevil taking on Pyro and looking for clues at the warehouse – with the help of Misty Knight – which leads to a secret tunnel and a group of criminals called the Enforcers and their newest member the Eel – who captures our hero. The story ends when Daredevil escapes and captures the Eel and presents the Eel to the courtroom waiting for the trial of Mr. Hyde to start.  The year ends with two standalone stories that have a much different look and feel from the rest of the year. In the first, Daredevil takes on Mysterio who's working on a super-hero insurance scam. This fun story will be our spotlight story for the week. In the second, we see a night of Daredevil fighting crime while Karen Page talks to people of New York about their thoughts on Daredevil (now that the Fantastic Four and Avengers are gone) during her late-night radio call in show.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #358 November 1996 “Aftermath”  Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Stick to what you are good at.  Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.

This week, Jared and Teladia outline why Death in comics has become a meaningless marketing tactic that is slowly losing its effectiveness. They use the Death of Superman and Death of the Justice League as examples of when comics used death as a marketing tactic. "The Death of Superman" is a crossover story event mostly featured in DC Comics' Superman-related publications. The crossover, which originated from editor Mike Carlin and writers Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, began in December 1992 and lasted until October 1993. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a 2024 action-adventure shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, it is a spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight. Discussed in this episode 1. The origin of the death and rebirth trope 2. How the death of Superman broke death in comics 3. Why Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League failed as a marketing tactic 4. When death was used well What do you think? What broke death in comics? Is there a time where death was used well? We took this time to have a little comic swap/mart in the driveway of That Comic Smell's home. It was one of the few times we had seen each other in person. Mike had been gifted various longboxes with A LOT of comics. They were predominantly DC titles and after we had met, had a good laugh and picked our way through them all, we went back home, read a bunch of them and discussed it over Skype. This is a little blast from the past and some things that are discussed may be long past now but it just gives us a little glimpse into a time where we were still trying our hardest to stay connected with friends and loved ones. It's the stuff of legend. Barbara Randall Kesel writes a 10-page letter to Dick Giordano, DC's head honcho in the 80s, explaining why the publisher was failing both its female character and readers. Next thing you know, she's offered a writing gig (taking on a Batgirl backup feature in Detective Comics) and enters the male-dominated comics industry as a new voice for equality. She goes on to become an editor at DC, co-writing, with then-husband Karl Kesel, a Hawk & Dove miniseries that was one of artist Rob Liefeld's first major projects. Hopping around publishers, she helped Dark Horse establish their superhero universe with Comics' Greatest World, took a turn at Image with WildC.A.T.s and Savant Garde, and joined GrossGen, where she wrote and edited several titles, including Meridian. She's even mastered licensed comics, with stints on My Little Pony, Ghost Whisperer, and Legends of the Dark Crystal. Barbara is an outspoken critic of sexism in comics, and she's seen her share of marginalization throughout her career. She gets into all of it this episode, so sit up and listen closely: you might even learn something! You can follow Barbara on Facebook (facebook.com/brkesel) and Twitter @barbarakesel.__________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. We're happy to welcome Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) back for his annual visit to discuss the latest Impossible Jones kickstarter. At the time of recording, there were two days left in the Impossible Jones / Polecat Kickstarter, which has been trying to reach its latest stretch goals in the final days. Karl tells about new character Polecat, what he has in common with last issue's guest star Captain Lightning and some of the other new friends and foes in this issue. We also talk about the Even Steven back-ups this time around, with new origin stories being written by Alex Segura and Gail Simone. Karl also updates on us the state of the latest Section Zero project, on which he and Tom Grummett are still working. If you listen before the deadline, you can still pledge at impossiblekickstarter.com. We also talk about some of Karl's older work, starting with Final Night, the 1998 DC mini-series he created with Stuart Immonen, the Amalgam and Unlimited Access books and some of the projects he worked on with the late George Perez, including the great History of the DC Universe, written by Marv Wolfman, drawn by George and inked by Karl. We also discuss, in a wonderfully nerdy way, the differences between DC's Who Who and the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Parish Notice: By the time you listen to this, we might have a new podcast officially launched over at the When It Was Cool Network. If you're a long-time listener of the pod, the subject of this new project will not be a surprise. Be on the lookout on social media when it actually debuts.

The jelly to Karl Kesel's peanut butter, Tom Grummett is the perfect ending to our first week of Superman shows. Not only was his art instrumental in the Death of Superman storyline, including work on Adventures of Superman and Superboy, he was a contributor on classic runs of New Titans and Batman, including the introduction of Tim Drake as Robin. Recently, he and Kesel finished their long-dormant Section Zero miniseries, and he continues to be one of Bandit Mike's favorite pencillers. ______________________________Check out and subscribe to YEET Presents on Patreon: patreon.com/yeetmagazine.Email us at dollarbinbandits@gmail.com. The pod returns with a guest we have been trying to get on for quite a while. Longtime comics creator Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) is here to discuss his current Kickstarter project Section Zero 1959, a continuation of the series he and Tom Grummett started almost 20 years ago. We talk about the creation of that series in 2000 and its return as a Kickstarter project in 2017., with the hardcover out now and the story being serialized by Image Comics in April. We talk about the book's inspirations , notably the work of Jack Kirby. (I interviewed Karl way back in issue 27 of the Jack Kirby Collector about his love of the King and some of his more esoteric characters). We also do a deep dive into Karl's career, featuring some of our favorite books over the last couple decades. We chat about a few books he did with Stuart Immonen, Adventures of Superman, the Fantastic Four Annual from 1998 and the DC event series Final Night. We also discuss one of my all-time favorite (and all too brief) comic books series his run on Daredevil with Cary Nord.On the day of our interview, Section Zero 1959 had two weeks left to go in its Kickstarter campaign and was just over 80% funded. For information on the book and some very cool incentives if you pledge, head over to SectionZero1959.com.Two other pieces of business: We will soon be starting our series on the website called High Wire Act, which is an episode by episode break-down of the classic 1960s spy show Danger Man (aka Secret Agent). We hope to have a pod up soon discussing that with a returning podcast guest. Also, we are in talks to do our first convention in a few years in the summer. If we do the show, we will likely have a new issue of the magazine out to go along with the appearance.

The duo fly home planning their next move. Meanwhile, Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Huntress, breaks into Logan's loft, tracking down leads to Creed H. Quinn, the Hyena. As she snoops through the loft, she comes across the greatest secret of all: the costumes of Dark Claw and thus his true identity. Before she can leave, Dark Claw enters through a passage way behind the closet and pins the Huntress to the ground. Undecided what to do with the intruder, the two begin to talk and soon Dark Claw shares his secrets. He is indeed Logan, a by product of an experiment that he and three others volunteered for, one of the others was his one time friend Creed H. Quinn. Dark Claw shows her the Barrow, his lair and center for his war on crime. This decision doesn't sit well with Sparrow at first, but soon the three begin looking for clues Hyena might have set back at the Gotham Gazette. They discover two clues, AF1 meaning Air Force One, and NaCN for Sodium Cyonide a deadly poison. The three head immediately to Air Force One, and arrive just as Hyena makes his move. With the gas filling the plane, Dark Claw corners his foe and cuts a whole in the plane, jettisoning Hyena, Dark Claw, and the gas. - via DC Wikia" SPIDER-BOY Spider-Boy is a super-hero in the Amalgam Universe.
