If you consider yourself patriotic, do you know about Hussaniwala? It's a small village on the border of Indian Punjab and Pakistan and has a fascinating history that shaped both pre and post-independence India. This week, on the eve of our independence day, we speak with Varun Oak-Bhakay, who travelled to Hussainiwala, the Land of the Martyrs. Tune in, and discover this forgotten piece of Indian history. A great public prayer offered up at the 1988 Easter Convention, at Martyrs Memorial by Ian Paisley. So many public prayers today are sloppy and dead, dribbly and drab - but this prayer fragrances the uniqueness and eccentricity of personality, with a sense of reality that catches the conscience and inspires the soul.

God called John Weaver to Afghanistan as a single man, and he stayed in the country even after 9/11 when the U.S. government encouraged all Americans to leave. John committed his singleness to God, making peace with the fact that he might never get married while living and working in an isolated village in Afghanistan. It was only weeks after making that commitment that John met Jeanne—an American woman born in Kabul whom God had brought from half a world away to be John’s bride. Listen to the story of their amazing romance, which is also told in a new book called Najiba: A Love Story from Afghanistan (affiliate link). You’ll hear how they courted and married according to Afghan traditions, honoring the culture in which they served while still shining as a lighthouse for Christ and for God’s amazing blessing that is Christian marriage. John will also demonstrate specific ways we can pray for Afghanistan. John has shared previously on VOM Radio. Listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of that conversation. John was also part of the 2019 Martyrs Memorial induction ceremony, which you can watch online here.
In the second half of this conversation, Hannelie Groenewald recalls the day her husband and two teen-aged children were killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. The names of Werner, Rodé and Jean-Pierre Groenewald will be unveiled on the Martyrs Memorial in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on Saturday, June 29 as a part of the commemoration of Day of the Christian Martyr, 2019. In this interview, recorded in 2016, Hannelie recalls the Psalm she read over and over again as she waited to hear whether her family members were alive or dead, and the amazement of Afghans at her ability to forgive the Taliban which had murdered her entire family. She’ll also describe the blessing of knowing that Christians around the world were praying for her as she grieved—and the hope she has because of God’s promise of eternity in heaven. Hannelie shares hard-earned truth with listeners who may be struggling to forgive someone who has wronged them, and her thoughts on working through fear with God’s help. She’ll also equip us to pray more effectively for the nation of Afghanistan and for our Christian brothers and sisters there. You can watch the induction ceremony for Werner, Jean-Pierre and Rodé Groenewald onto the Martyrs Memorial by going to www.Persecution.com/martyr. The event will also be available through Facebook Live on the VOM Facebook page. Listen to Part 1 of the conversation here.
After the attacks of 9/11, God called Werner and Hannelie Groenewald to go and share Jesus’ love in Afghanistan. Even some of their own family members said, ‘NO! God would never call you to take your children to Afghanistan!’ Inside the country, they served and loved the Afghan people in the name of Jesus. Hannelie, as a doctor, provided medical care. Werner worked in leadership development and humanitarian aid. Their work, and the fact that they served in the name of Jesus, did not go unnoticed by radical Muslims in Afghanistan. In 2014, a Taliban attack on their home took the lives of Werner and the Groenewalds’ son and daughter, Jean-Pierre and Rodé. Hannelie was not home at the time of the attack, and her life was spared. Listen as she tells the story of God’s call to Afghanistan, and how God increased her faith even in the days and weeks before the attack, preparing her to endure faithfully a terrible loss. You can watch online as the names of Hannelie’s family, Werner, Jean-Pierre and Rodé are added to The Martyrs Memorial on Day of the Christian Martyr, June 29th. You can find more information, and register to access the video of the ceremony, at www.Persecution.com/martyr.
By Rev. David McLaughlin, Minister of Carryduff Free Presbyterian Church. As a church family we were plunged into a state of shock and mourning on Friday morning by the sudden passing of Dr. Paisley (Lord Bannside), the founding father of our denomination and former moderator of the Presbytery of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster. On behalf of the Kirk Session and Committee of Carryduff Free Presbyterian Church we extend our deep sympathy to Baroness (Eileen) Paisley and family, Sharon, Rhonda, Cherith, Ian, Kyle and their families, on the death of a much loved husband, father and grandfather, and assure them of our thoughts and prayers at this time. Dr. Paisley’s death marks the end of an era in Ulster. For six decades he stood in this province (often alone) as a faithful spiritual leader who was fiery and passionate about what he believed in. Ian Paisley was definitely a lover of the Lord. A gifted orator whose words were fuelled by a heart full of passion, as he proclaimed the one way of salvation through his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. From his pulpit in the Martyrs Memorial for 60 years, he sounded out the Gospel message, under such striking titles as: – ‘What think ye of Christ’ (22nd-Dec 1968) – ‘How to Set a Church on Fire’ (25th-Jan1970) – ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, There is Liberty’ (25th-Oct1987) – ‘Patrick the man’ (03-Dec 2000) – ‘Light on Religious Revivals from Zachariah’s Candlesticks’ (17th-Apr 2005) These sermons and 100s more are freely available via sermonaudio.com The Bible reference that he added underneath his signature when asked to sign books or Bibles was clearly a prayer and a pledge; Ephesians 6:19-20: And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. His chief motivation in all he said and did was his love for his Lord. The ‘Doc’ as we affectionately called him was also a lover of the lost. From a young age he laboured as a zealous evangelist, who covered thousands of miles in the search for lost souls. He was one who taught our congregations and hearers everywhere to love the souls of men. He was equally a lover of the Land. A true loyalist indeed. A ‘Shamgar’ for our day and generation. Like a ‘Mr. Valiant-for-Truth’, Dr. Paisley prominently stands in the noble line of the men and women from Protestant Reformation times as he tackled the apostasy and false religion of these modern times. On many occasions he gave lectures on the Protestant Reformers; take a look around the corridors of ‘Martyrs’ Memorial’ next time you’re there; the very walls commemorate those noble men and women who gave their lives for the cause of Christ in their day and Generation. Surely we can say of Dr. Paisley, “He served his own generation well”. He was a lover of Liberty. A great stalwart in prayer; always encouraging and inspirin...
Hello from the Plain! The last few weeks have flown by in a whirl of assessments and cushions, so this is just a quick update prior to the Postcard, which was recorded back in April. Woolsack Update The first two Listener Cushions are now assembled and stuffed and ready to make their way to London. Thank you all so much! The first cushion I think is made from a lot of Rowan British Breeds, and includes a square made in the US on the front.... and squares made in Australia on the back... The second cushion also has some "Made in Oz" squares, this time on the front.... Thanks to all the listeners who contributed! A Postcard from Oxford The music in this postcard is from the album The Oxford Ramble and is used with the kind permission of Magpie Lane .
