"In the 1970s, Muslim characters in films were very different. In the 1990s, Roja opened the floodgates for films representing Muslims as terrorists. It was the first film which looked at the identity of the enemy. Then, especially after the attacks of 9/11, there was a big change in the representation of Muslims in Hindi films. As for women, in many films, Muslim women are reduced to being victims of oppression always. Now, whatever is happening in the current sociopolitical scene is directly reflected on screen. I have tried to connect the politics of representation in Hindi films with contemporary politics. So my book isn't just film studies, it is also a political text" — Nadira Khatun, author, 'Postcolonial Bollywood and Muslim Identity' talks to Manjula Narayan about everything from Pran in Zanjeer to the saviour syndrome in Gully Boy, the Brahmanical stance of films like Secret Superstar and Lipstick Under my Burqa, the absence of films made by subaltern Muslims, the vanished Muslim Social of the 1970s and 80s, and much more.

On this week's episode, I'm speaking to Saima Mir, journalist and crime novelist, author of The Khan, and its sequel, Vengeance. In her books, Saima introduces us to Jia Khan. A successful lawyer, her London life is a long way from the grubby Northern streets she knew as a child, where her father headed up the Pakistani community and ran the local organised crime syndicate. Often his Jirga rule - the old way - was violent and bloody, but it was always justice of a kind.In her books, Saima explores morality, humanity, family, kinship, community, patriarchy and the unfair expectations placed on women. She explores what people are forced to do to survive, and the grey lines between right and wrong.Saima Mir is an award-winning journalist and writer. She has written for The Guardian, The Times, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph, and worked for the BBC.Her work appeared in the anthology, It's Not About the Burqa in 2019, and The Best Most Awful Job in 2020. Her novel The Khan is being published by Point Blank and is due on in January 2021. The Khan has been optioned by BBC Studios.Saima is a recipient of The Commonwealth Broadcast Association World View Award, and The K Blundell Trust Award. Listen to host Diana Buttu as she delves deep into a chapter of Palestinian history. Journey back to 1973, when under the cloak of night, Israeli soldiers seized a scenic hilltop near the town of Burqa, Nablus. Once a serene haven of apple orchards and mesmerizing terraces, this 173 dunam (approximately 43 acres) land, owned by Palestinians, was transformed overnight. Families who once flocked here to immerse themselves in nature's embrace suddenly found their beloved land overtaken to establish a military base, subsequently morphing into the Israeli settlement of Homesh. This episode sheds light on the resulting geopolitical divisions and the devastating impact of settler terrorism on the residents of Burqa. Join Diana for a gripping narration of how landscapes and lives can change, leaving legacies of lost connections and longing.
Is Europe beginning to ban Islam? We're going to look at exactly what's happening in Europe and see how it relates to a worldwide trend that is decisively restructuring our world and permanently ending the liberal world order! Highlights: ● “In the nation of France, Muslim girls would no longer be allowed to wear garments known as abayas in schools. The new law, which takes effect as of this September, is aimed at preventing what French officials believe to be a deliberate attempt by Muslims to convert French citizens to Islam.” ● “The nation of Austria has just shut down several mosques recently, expelling upwards of 60 Turkish-funded imams as a part of a crackdown on Islamic extremism within the borders of their nation. This, shall we say, is the enforcement side of a law that Austria passed back in 2015.” ● “The nation of Switzerland has officially passed a national burka ban by way of a popular referendum, that was preceded a couple of years back by the Swiss canton of St. Gallen in northeastern Switzerland, when they held a referendum and voted overwhelmingly, by a two-thirds margin, to ban face coverings characteristic of the Islamic burqa in their region.” ● “It's all a product of what scholars call re-territorialization, as liberal globalism wanes across the world, more and more populations are reclaiming their cultural space, and they're beginning to take action to protect that space from any remaining vestiges of the radically anti-cultural dynamics of trans-national globalization.” Timestamps: [00:49] The robes worn by Muslim women, called abaya, will be banned in French state schools [03:14] Austria closes mosque, kicks 60 imams, promises to shut more, in wake of attack [05:12] Switzerland approves Burqa ban to prohibit some face coverings in public [06:35] What is going on here with all these European nations turning against Islam Resources: ● Get Over 66% OFF All of Mike Lindell's Products using code TURLEY: https://www.mypillow.com/turley ● The Courageous Patriot Community is inviting YOU! In part one of this two-part special, host Diana Buttu dives deep into the stories of two West Bank towns with identical names: Burqa. Beyond their names, these towns are united by an overwhelming challenge — the presence of Israeli settlers, soldiers, and a legal system that often appears to favor land acquisition. Our journey begins in Burqa near Ramallah. Just a few weeks ago, a tragic event took place as Israeli settlers took the life of an 18-year-old Palestinian, Qusai Mitan. Listen as Diana speaks to Qusai's grieving family, delving into the harrowing narrative of how settlers, often backed by violence and a biased legal framework, perpetuate land seizures. But to even reach Burqa, Diana had to navigate numerous Israeli-imposed roadblocks, which have isolated Burqa from its neighboring towns. Tune in to hear firsthand accounts, raw emotions, and stories from the ground.

As settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank continues to intensify, Haaretz West Bank correspondent Hagar Shezaf joins host Allison Kaplan Sommer to share her experiences covering the deadly incidents in Hawara, Turmus Aya, Um Safr, and, over the past weekend, the clashes in the village of Burqa that resulted in the killing of 19-year-old Qosai Jammal Mi'tan. Two settlers are suspected in the shooting. Friction between settlers living in the outposts that ring and encroach on Palestinian villages is nothing new, Shezaf explains, but their level of violence has been on the rise since the ascendance of the Netanyahu government, whom she says seem to be emboldening the perpetrators.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian and legal reporter Jeremy Sharon join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Yesterday evening, a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group opened fire in a bustling area of Tel Aviv and critically shot 42-year-old patrolman Chen Amir, a married father of three. What do we know about the incident and its perpetrator? Two settlers suspected in the killing of a Palestinian man on Friday have been remanded until Wednesday. We hear about the suspects, Elisha Yered, a former spokesman for the far-right Otzma Yehudit party's MK Limor Son Har-Melech, and Yehiel Indore. Last week Fabian toured the area straddling Israel's northern border with Lebanon. We hear his first-hand impressions on how Hezbollah's escalations are affected residents. On Thursday, the High Court held a hearing over the recusal amendment to a Basic Law and a lot of very strong statements. Sharon weighs in on what we could see coming out from the court. Discussed articles include: Terrorist kills patrolman in Tel Aviv, is shot dead by 2nd officer IDF troops map West Bank home of Tel Aviv shooter for demolition Lawyers for settlers suspected in killing of Palestinian claim self-defense Jitters grow along Lebanon border as Hezbollah provocations become more brazen High Court calls PM recusal law ‘clearly personal,' indicates it may intervene Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Taliban have ordered Afghan women to cover their faces in public, the latest restriction on their freedoms. Also on the programme, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, has been sworn in for a second term, after his recent election victory over the far right. And, some of America's big corporate employers are taking a clear stance in the country's abortion debate, following leaks that the Supreme Court is about to enable individual states to outlaw procedures to terminate pregnancy.
