Unionists felt that Margaret Thatcher was someone they could trust so when she signed the Anglo-Irish Agreement giving Dublin the right to be consulted over NI, unionists felt utterly betrayed and they were outraged. The UUP leader Jim Molyneax even called it an “an evil document.” Tens of thousands of unionists took to the streets of Belfast, a day forever remembered due to the DUP leader Ian Paisley's “never, never, never” speech. Professor Fergal Cochrane, Alex Kane, Professor Graham Walker, and Dr. Peter McLaughlin explain what happens when the Anglo-Irish Agreement is revealed and why. Hosted on Acast. The Fethard-on-Sea Boycott was a notorious event in Irish history. In 1957, Sheila Cloney, the Protestant wife of a Catholic farmer, fled her home with her children. Associates of Ian Paisley hid Sheila and her children in Belfast before eventually getting them to Scotland. Sheila Cloney left the Wexford village after refusing to bow to the demands of the local Catholic clergy to educate her daughter as Catholics. In response, the priests launched a boycott of Fethard's Protestant shopkeepers and farmers. Tim Fanning tells Ciarán Dunbar the story of Sheila Cloney of the boycott of Protestants in Fethard-on-Sea. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Rev Ian Paisley rose to prominence as the face of hardline unionism but the first time some would have heard of him would have been in connection with Maura Lyons. In 1956, the west Belfast teenager was smuggledto Scotland by members of the Free Presbyterian Church. She was a 15-year-old Catholic girl who converted to Free Presbyterianism, in the face of the strong objections of her family. They accused the Rev Ian Paisley of “abduction”. At one point, he gathered his supporters in the Ulster Hall to listen to a recording of Maura's voice at the Ulster Hall, renouncing her Catholic faith as a “religion of fear and dread”. Ciarán Dunbar is joined by journalist Malachi O'Doherty, who grew up in west Belfast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Charles Strozier is the author of Making Peace in Northern Ireland: The Miracle of the Good Friday Agreement. In this conversation with Center Director Joseph Lennjon, Strozier discusses his distinctive approach to history—one that blends psychoanalytic insight with political and cultural analysis—to understand how empathy and inner transformation shaped the peace process. Reflecting on decades of scholarship spanning Abraham Lincoln, 9/11, and apocalyptic thought, Strozier traces how his curiosity about the psychology of violence and reconciliation led him to study figures like John Hume, David Trimble, Ian Paisley, and John Alderdice, the key “dramatis personae” of the Good Friday Agreement.Strozier explores the inner lives behind political change—how the painstaking act of listening across divides created what he calls “radical empathy,” making peace possible after generations of sectarian violence. The discussion ranges from the gendered dynamics of the talks to Northern Ireland's shifting cultural identity in the post-Brexit era, concluding with Strozier's reflections on hope, healing, and his current work on the psychology of idealization. It's an illuminating look at how understanding human emotion and imagination can help explain not only history, but also the possibility of reconciliation in our own time.

The sermon centers on the critical distinction between religious zeal and saving knowledge, drawing from Romans 10:2–4 to illustrate how the Israelites, despite their fervent devotion, lacked true understanding of God's righteousness and instead sought to establish their own through works. The preacher, reflecting on his own life, reveals a personal journey marked by religious performance, spiritual pride, and deep anxiety over salvation—built on a foundation of self-effort rather than faith in Christ's finished work. Through vivid personal anecdotes, including childhood fears of hell, addiction to television, and a false sense of righteousness, he exposes the danger of misplaced confidence and the need for a radical shift from self-reliance to simple trust in Christ alone. The turning point comes through exposure to the gospel of grace, particularly through the preaching of Ian Paisley and S.B. Cook, which led him to abandon his 'filthy rag' righteousness and embrace Christ's imputed righteousness by faith. The message culminates in a powerful call to abandon all self-justification and simply look to Jesus, who has paid the full price for salvation, offering hope and peace to all who trust in Him. json

Send us a textCan you be a Christian and a friend of the Pope? That's just one of the bold questions we tackle as we unpack the controversial legacy of Billy Graham. Known for his widespread influence, Graham also faced significant criticism, particularly around his associations with the Catholic Church and notable figures like DL Moody and John Nelson Darby. This episode invites you to critically evaluate whether Graham's alliances compromised the integrity of the gospel. Drawing inspiration from critiques by Ian Paisley, we provide a fresh perspective on what it means to uphold sound biblical doctrine amidst complex religious dynamics.Moving from earthly controversies to celestial questions, we delve into the profound debate of eternal condemnation and free will, using Graham's teachings as a lens. Does God send people to hell, or is it the outcome of personal choices? We explore this theological puzzle, likening it to the complexities of the criminal justice system, where punishment is imposed rather than chosen. By questioning the nature of free will within divine judgment, we aim to provoke thoughtful reflections and encourage you to find your own understanding of these deep and enduring questions.Funny news, Real Talk & Spiritual Growth - Faith that's honest, Deep & Intentional Breaking down faith, culture & big questions - a mix of humor with real spiritual growth. For good food – often too much good food - good craic and sitting at home watching a movie, listening to music and reading a good book. It's a time for remembering those who are no longer with us or for visiting those sick or in hospital.60 Years A Growing. As this year draws to a close it strikes me that I first became an activist sixty years ago. It was in September 1964. I was a student in St. Mary's Grammar School in Barrack Street at the bottom of Divis Street.  On my way to school I noticed that a shop front in Divis Street was plastered with election posters for the upcoming British General Election.  Liam McMillan, a local republican had his election office there. He displayed the Irish national flag in the shop window. The flag was illegal and the RUC, at the behest of Ian Paisley, an up and coming demagogue, using crowbars and pickaxes smashed their way into the election office and seized the flag. The republicans replaced it and there were a few days of street disturbances. The Divis Street Riots.  2024 – A defining year for UnityLast February the North's political institutions were re-established. This was an important development but more crucially Michelle O'Neill was elected as First Minister of the Executive. This was a historic moment in the constitutional transformation that commenced with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
