My guest today is first time Middle Class Rock Star guest, Caitlin Cannon. We first met on a gig together at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO on a Halloween night a few years back. To this day, it's the longest (and spookiest) soundcheck I've ever been a part of. Her newest release, a full length titled, The TrashCannon Album, finds clever wordplay tackling what Caitlin calls the “inner garbage” we all have, but tend to hide away. Throughout its twelve tracks, Cannon shines a light on hard truths –a batch of songs that confronts alcoholism and addiction, dishonesty in relationships, the divisive effects of class structure, economic injustice and difficult family situations. It sounds like it might be a heavy record -- and it's true, Caitlin does dive deep into what she's saying -- but it's also arranged in such a way that she makes sure you know she's more than a few steps ahead. The album's producer, Megan Burtt (who was my guest on MCRS episode 45) challenged Caitlin to write one song a week in 2018, which resulted in Caitlin pulling together honest songs that formed a cohesive record. During our conversation, we chat about life, growing up in acting, and her struggles with addiction. We also spend some time talking about today's prison system as it relates to her song, "Mama's a Hairdresser." A deeply personal song, her brother was sentenced to life without parole at age 17. BIG NEWS FOR MIDDLE CLASS ROCK STAR! We're now reaching 25 FM frequencies throughout Colorado via Chris K's radio show, The Colorado Playlist. No guest this week! Or actually, a whole lot of guests. It's a little misleading though. It's not actually all "the best" of 2020, rather, just the episodes that I edited together for Chris K's Colorado Playlist. I took those 6ish minute segments and put them all together into a full episode. These are some of my favorite moments from (in no particular order): Jeremy Lawton (Big Head Todd & The Monsters), Julia Mendiolea (Y La Bamba, Inner Oceans), Andy Frasco, Shanna In A Dress, Megan Burtt, Alex Rhodes, Anthony Farrell (The Greyhounds), Dango Rose (Elephant Revival), Sarah Slaton, and Patrick Sites (Whitewater Ramble). NYAC teamed up with New York's famous venue Rockwood Music Hall to put on our first virtual "In The Round" series. Our artists include... Ben Grace: Now based in San Diego, but born and raised in Sydney, Ben’s exodus from the beliefs and structures of his working class Christian childhood weaves poignantly through his lyrics, revealing itself in his deep commitment to justice and willingness to call forward the darker themes in American politics. With the lens of an outsider and the bold voice of a witness, Ben writes to challenge and disrupt our comfort with the status quo. @bengracemusic Megan Burtt: Rocky Mountain raised, and international touring artist, Megan Burtt is a decorated performing songwriter. It was great catching up with my old friend, Megan Burtt. I first became aware of her music when she was a guest speaker at CU Denver's weekly convocation (a required class for all music performance majors) back in.... 2010? Over the last decade, she has established herself as one of the best songwriters in Denver and around the country. She has won lots of awards for her performances and writing including: Rocky Mountain Folk Festival, Kerrville NewFolk Competition, Mountain NewSong Competition and Westword Best Singer/Songwriter. In our conversation, we talk about her travels to places like Mississippi and New York. We also go through career highlights and struggles including a serious illness back in 2013 and again in 2019. Her tours have included solo trips overseas as well as full band performances through the Pennsylvania prison system. In her words, “The maximum security inmates we play for are some of my favorite audiences. It's incredible to perform for people who are truly grateful you're there.” If you enjoy the podcast, please let others know, subscribe or write a review. 5 star ratings and reviews on Apple Music as well as subscribing to our YouTube Channel help us out the most!! "So much in my life is just about a namesake. If I had a band name...my whole life would be different. Somehow the name changes everything because you're not a band. You're a hired gun." In today's world, making a living making art can be extremely difficult. With the fact that album sales alone will rarely be enough to sustain most artists alone, it's imperative that artists start thinking outside the box and experimenting with different ways to make this passion something that is sustaining. In this episode, Megan Burtt schools us all on that very topic. From playing in piano bars in Vietnam, touring prisons in Pennsylvania, to crafting and selling custom guitar straps or diving into commissioned songcraft, Megan Burtt has always found a way to move forward. Listen above as we talk about her history in music, taking a dive on college entrance exams, Mississippi dreams, life changing illnesses, being in a band, watching stabbings and riots happen at your show and oh, just so much more! The song for this episode is called Spin and is available on Megan's latest album, 'The Bargain'. This week I was thrilled to have Katie Moulton and Kiernan Maletsky on the show. Kiernan is the outgoing and Katie is the incoming Music Editor for The Denver Westword. The Denver Westword is the primary Arts and Entertainment Alt Weekly in Denver. It's importance to the local music scene can't be understated. In many ways, for good or bad, The Westword guides the conversation here in Denver. As such, the role of Music Editor for a city's Alt Weekly is an important one. Simply put, the music editor directs the focus of the paper's scene coverage. This was a wonderful and very informative chat. We discussed both Katie's and Kiernan's histories in music and writing and their path to their current roles. We also talked about the details and controversies (and cleared up many misconceptions) about the Westword Music Showcase. We discussed ways that The Westword has been vital to the growth of the local scene as well as ways that it might be able to improve. Since Katie is so new to the scene I had Kiernan pick this weeks track and he chose Denver favorite, Megan Burtt. The track is called "It Ain't Love" and can be snatched up as part of her album of the same name ore direct on Bandcamp. Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and Rss.
Episode 33: Well, it's Christmas Eve. You're about to embark on an epic drive over the river and through the woods to have your weird aunt breathe scotch fumes all over your neck and listen to your uncle talk about just how right Rush is and witness the tight-lipped diplomacy exuded by old married couples sharing a kitchen while cooking and gasping every few seconds as hordes of shrieking children whirl like dervishes around a house, miraculously not splitting their heads open or poking their eyes or falling off of balconies etc etc. Or perhaps you are just waiting for a nice cup of tea to steep so you can resume your heavy hang on the couch, cozy as ever in a pair of thick socks and your sweatpants. Regardless of your current state, you'll hopefully receive this gift from The Narrators in good cheer. Here is a live show that we taped at the Denver Music Summit. The organizers invited us to put together a special show at the McNichols and invite musicians from near and far to tell "Tales From The Road." We had such an amazing group of stories that we thought it would be great to present all of them together. Our storytellers include: Yonnas Abraham from The Pirate Signal and BLKHRTS, Megan Burtt, Carleigh Aikens from BAHAMAS, Jeff Linsenmaier from The Fray, The Czars, Wovenhand, Scott Booker, who manages The Flaming Lips, and Dessa from the Doomtree Collective. Your faithful hosts kick off the podcast with the story of The Mouthstepperz, their acapella dubstep band. The intro and outro music was produced and graciously provided by Sans Seruf, and you can find more slick beats for your earholes over at his bandcamp page. Thanks for listening, and happy holidays!
