Mim and Lis hear from a new graduate social worker who landed a position in a rural Allied Health Graduate Program. The social worker shares her journey, from initial hesitation to embracing the unique opportunities and challenges of rural practice. The social worker describes her experience rotating through diverse clinical settings over two years, highlighting the strong support and flexibility of the graduate program. She recounts a case study demonstrating the creativity required in rural social work - when discharging an isolated older adult, the social worker leveraged local resources and relationships to help the patient maintain independence at home. Mim and Lis unpack the social worker's story, discussing the sense of community and resourcefulness in rural areas. They provide advice for new graduates, emphasising the importance of open-mindedness, asking questions about support, and researching the local context. Throughout, Mim and Lis draw parallels to their own experiences, offering an inspiring look at the realities of rural social work practice. p.s. Join Mim and Lis as we hear a story from an Australian social worker who took his child protection experience and practiced in Türkiye, working with urban refugee populations. He reflects on the challenges of applying Western social work practices in a non-Western context, including navigating cultural differences around mental health, trauma-informed practice, and power dynamics. The social worker grapples with his own biases and the need for cultural humility when working with people from backgrounds different to his own. He highlights the importance of letting refugee communities lead in defining their own needs and solutions, rather than imposing an outsider's perspective. Join hosts Lis Murphy and Mim Fox as they delve into the nuanced and delicate role of social workers in supporting individuals through voluntary assisted dying. As the state of New South Wales, Australia prepares to introduce voluntary assisted dying later this month, Mim and Lis frame the conversation by highlighting how this emerging field of practice adds depth to the already established wider skillset of social work. The heart of the episode unfolds with a poignant story from a social worker who guided an elderly man and his family through the voluntary assisted dying process. The narrative emphasises the importance of compassion, autonomy, and family involvement in end-of-life decisions. Lis and Mim reflect on the ethical considerations and social work principles involved, stressing the need for preparatory supervision, paired with ongoing critical reflection. The episode concludes with insights into creating safe spaces for end-of-life care conversations and the value of in-person and virtual communities for support. In this episode I have the absolute pleasure of speaking to Ben Grace who is the man behind a truly excellent skincare brand called Sbtrct.Having been one of the founding team members of Bulldog Skincare, Ben was desperate to do his own thing but he knew that it needed to be something that stood out in the crowded skincare market as well as truly benefitting the environment. Cue solid skincare! And when I say solid I'm talking actives too. Ben has worked tirelessly with his formulator to make solid Vitamin C and Retinoids and my mind is honestly blown.Ben is such an inspiring guy and I love his story and what he's doing. I hope you leave this episode feeling as excited as I am. I know it's only skincare but when people bring something new and creative to the table it makes me very happy indeed.Enjoy getting to know this brilliant man!

How do we measure a successful outcome in our practice? What would we consider a happy ending for the people we work with? Would they agree? In this episode, Mim and Lis explore a story from a social worker in the Early Intervention space. We hear what Early Intervention is, and the approaches for supporting families before their situation reaches a crisis point. Then we hear a powerful story about a family this social worker supported, the ins and outs of their work together, and some deeply thought-provoking reflection regarding the real impact of our work with families. Mim and Lis then discuss these themes and open up a rich conversation on the complexity of working with families, our role in working towards successful outcomes, and the value of critical reflection in our ongoing practice. You probably already know that around Social Work Stories, we're big fans of stories from social workers who are in unique practice settings... so it's no question that we LOVED hearing this story. In this episode, we mark World Social Work Day 2023! Then, we hear a powerful story from Jack about his time as a Police Social Worker, working with Pacific Islander youth in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Then Mim and Lis explore the complex layers of the story, including Jack's struggle to navigate his role as a Samoan man working with both the police and the Pacifica community, the therapeutic approach he used to connect with a young man on his 'last chance', and the impact of systemic racism on indigenous youth. Hear about the critical reflection and conscious choices Jack made, as he worked to create change within the system and become a much-needed role model for this young man. And something so rare in social work - he got to see the fruits of his labour many years later! To connect with Jack, reach out to him here. Solid cosmetics are growing in popularity in line with our desire for less-is-more skincare and to do right by the planet. They can be multiuse, potentially use less water in their manufacture, strip out water as a “filler” in their formulation, and may not need preservatives. As they are waterless, they can be less weighty to ship thanks to their minimal packaging. For all their virtues however, solid formulations are often seen as fun, cheap and disposable and not attractive enough to deliver high-performance skincare. We may think of them as glorified bars of soap. However, there are innovative, forward-thinking cosmetics brands that are daring to reframe solid formulations to appeal to a more luxury beauty market. When we heard of the brand SBTRCT, we knew we had to find out their secret of making solid beauty not just the norm, but the luxury norm too. In this episode, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier talks to SBTRCT founder Ben Grace about his mission to disrupt the beauty industry and show us that anything is possible; even a facial serum bar perhaps.
