Matt Crawford speaks with Andrew Holter about his book, Going Around: Selected Journalism Murray Kempton. A courtly man of Southern roots, Murray Kempton worked as a labor reporter for the New York Post, won a Pulitzer Prize while at Newsday, and was arrested at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago along the way. He wore three piece suits and polished oxfords and was known for riding his bicycle around New York City while listening to his CD Walkman and smoking a pipe with wild red hair that later turned white. He developed a taste for baroque prose and became, in the words of Robert Silvers, his editor at The New York Review of Books, ''unmatched in his moral insight into the hypocrisies of politics and their consequences for the poor and powerless.'' He went to court proceedings and traffic accidents and funerals and to speeches by people who either were or wanted to be rich and famous. He wrote about everything and anybody—Tonya Harding and Warren Harding, Fidel Castro and Mussolini, Harry Truman and Sal Maglie, St. Francis of Assisi and James Joyce and J. Edgar Hoover. From dispatches from a hardscrabble coal town in Western Maryland, a bus carrying Freedom Riders through Mississippi, an Iowa cornfield with Nikita Krushchev, an encampment of guerrillas in El Salvador, and Moscow at the end of the Soviet Union (these last two assignments filed by a reporter in his 70s), Kempton's concerns and interests were extraordinarily broad. He wrote about subjects from H.L. Mencken to Tupac Shakur; organized labor and McCarthyism; the Civil Rights and Black Power movements; presidential hopefuls and Mafiosi; frauds and failures of all stripes; the “splendors and miseries” of life in New York City.

The worst thing imaginable happened to Bob Arnold and his wife Jeanne in 2002. They were getting ready for bed and a coroner calls. Their 23-year-old daughter Marcie was found dead in her apartment nearly 500 miles away. Marcie, a vibrant young woman who was just getting established in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., was talking with a friend on the phone when the conversation went silent. She had suffered QT prolongation, sudden death from cardiac arrest, a rare occurrence that afflicts people with arrythmia, or irregular heartbeat. It is a tragedy that no parent should have to endure. But rather than get angry or go into denial, Bob and Jeanne chose another route to confront their suffering. "I knew one thing that had to happen in order to do that ... is to really be honest about what's going on," Bob said. "Trying to think of all the ways to try to rationalize this or deal with this, I knew none of those were reality." Bob started journaling. In the first three years after Marcie's death, he wrote 1,300 pages to help him "sort through the depths of despair" he was feeling. Those reflections turned into a book authored by Bob and Jeanne called When the Circle is Broken: Our Journey Through Deep Sorrow and Surprising Joy in the Loss of Our Daughter. The suffering also led Bob to ministry. The Arnolds now have a 70-acre farm in Western Maryland named Marcie's Meadow, which serves the ministry. They help people who are facing illness, death, divorce, or family difficulties find the joyous hand of God in their sorrow. "God doesn't take away the pain, but the pain continually became a healing agent," he said. "It (keeps) shaping and reforming and reforming, and in the process, we meet this compassionate and caring God." Bob's spirituality is evident in this week's episode of Chiseled. He tells a profound story of sorrow and joy and shares a path to healing that we can all follow.  Bob's ministry is available to anyone who needs a lift. He can be reached at his email or phone number, which he shares at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, you can check out his ministry at his website, meadow4.org.

This afternoon, Joe and David started a conversation about our education system and how it has been undermined by a leftist agenda. The pair first examined how Chicago public schools are being directed to pass migrant students, even if they have failed. They also pointed out a case in which parents are suing their school district because students were roomed with the opposite sex, with the transgender agenda taking precedence over children's safety and comfort. After a short break, Joe and David welcomed guest Shaun Porter to the show. Shaun Porter is a 45-year-old Western Maryland native with two sons—one is a professional firefighter, and the other is a 5-year-old deaf child. Porter has been active in civil rights matters since 1995 and currently shares his First Amendment activism on YouTube and TikTok, where he has garnered over 1 billion views since 2020. Porter is currently laser-focused on political and school board corruption in Washington County, Maryland. Together, the three discussed how Shaun confronted his school board after they allowed his deaf son to be bullied and abused by classmates. Following Shaun's departure, Joe and David turned their attention to the second would-be assassin and how the DOJ recklessly released his letter, which called for a $150,000 bounty to be placed on Trump, before closing in prayer.

His wife, Sandie, is on staff at nearby McDaniel College where she is a professor of astronomy and physics, while his three children—a daughter and two sons—have moved on to professional careers. An avid athlete for most of his life, Stempel helped coach his children in basketball and baseball while they were young, while active as a runner and handball player himself. He was born and raised in Westfield, New Jersey, and is a graduate of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C.Jim is considered an authority on the Eastern campaigns of the American Civil War, as well as the politics and engagements of the American Revolution. His book, The Nature of War: Origins and Evolution of Violent Conflict, has been well received by an international audience for its wide grasp of human conflict, its willingness to delve into the basic motivations of human warfare, and the true prospects for peace those motivations suggest.Stempel's other published works reflect a wide range of interests, with numerous articles appearing in such varied journals as Concepts in Human Development, New Times, North & South, History Net, History News Network, War History Online, The Edge, and New Dawn Magazine, among others. Many of his historical pieces have been selected to reappear on the highly respected, Real Clear History. When Beliefs Fail, Jim's nonfiction analysis of science, psychology, and modern spirituality, brought high praise from fellow authors Ken Wilber, Dr. Larry Dossey, and Mark Waldman. His novel Albemarle was nominated for the James Fenimore Cooper Prize in Historical Fiction. The West Coast Review of Books wrote of his novel American Rain, “Lovers of political satire may consider this book a masterpiece because of Stempel's sly wit and insight.”Jim's historical novel, Windmill Point – a Chanticleer Awards Finalist – brings to life one of the most exciting and critical periods of the American Civil War. Of American Hannibal, his nonfiction account of the Battle of Cowpens during the Revolutionary War, one critic wrote: “As one who reviewed Jim Stempel's Windmill Point, I was again drawn into a fascinating story, told by a master historian, writer, and a man with the painter's palette that left me with a most wonderful read.”Stempel has now followed-up the success of American Hannibal with a new nonfiction work, Valley Forge to Monmouth: Six Transformative Months of the American Revolution, due out in October 2020. Pre-Release reviews have to date been excellent. John McElroy, for instance, historian, author, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona, writes “Anyone interested in knowing what America's independence from Britain required should read this book.”Jim's focus for over thirty years has been to present thoughtful literature, along with historical accounts – accurately and enjoyably – to the widest range of readers possible; a mission he intends to continue. Happy Sunday, Soothers! This week, I had a massive realization, which was also like, obvious, but sometimes it lands different, ya know? Anyways, the realization: I am the first female entrepreneur in my entire lineage (that I'm aware of). I am also the first unmarried woman in my entire lineage (that I'm aware of). I paired the two realizations and it hit me like a ton of bricks: I am meant in this lifetime to achieve what my mother, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, great-great-grandmothers and beyond could not because of the patriarchy: earn my own money from my heart's work, make that money MINE and MINE alone, learn to expertly manage the money on my own without the support (or interference/exploitation) of a man, and then share and teach this with others. I don't know about you, but the majority of the women in my lineage were stay-at-home-moms and housewives, who, if and when they did enter the career field, it was to support their husband's work and visions. And I'm here to birth a new possibility.Anybody who is interested in career, entrepreneurship, money management, and you need an extra boost of motivation and understanding, tune into this episode to reflect on what your ancestors who were women might want you to understand and learn about money in ways that they were not permitted to. I'm hosting a New Year's retreat in Western Maryland! We can often be hyper-independent -- we can do it all alone! We don't need help! -- and groups like masterminds, where we come together with other like-minded souls for healing and growth and accountability and love and BEING SEEN as we ARE, not as we think we need to be or should be -- can be a critical and powerful part of our healing process, of understanding that we can show up human, that we get to ask for help, that we get to be seen in our full emotional spectrum and that it is now safe to do so. But as I've shifted more into my feminine energy I've started to think about what goal-setting can look like from a more relaxed, spacious approach, rather than a lot of DOING in going after the goals. So today I set up a little mini workshop, so bring a pen and paper. We're doing a mini exercise around one of your desired goals, and I'm asking you to tap into it in an entirely different way: through feeling; through the five senses; and through removing limiting beliefs and addressing safety around the goal. Hey Soothers! Today I'm sharing a goal I am embarking on starting September 1: Going three months without alcohol, gluten or caffeine. I talk about why I'm doing it (reasons include PMDD, anxiety, health, and oh yeah, maybe some magic?) and how I plan to do it, and am sharing all of this here for some extra accountability and support around this! I'm not doing this to try to "cleanse" myself or be super restrictive, but more as a continued exploration of the substances in my life that do not serve me and how I end up being in a spiralic journey of on and off with them and how I can continue to deepen into the belief that I get to feel good and not ingest things that don't support me in my feeling good. I don't by ANY means think anybody else needs to do this kind of adventure — if there's one thing I've learned in life it's that self care, especially health and diet, are singularly unique for each person — but in case you're curious or been thinking about this kind of stuff too, listen in.Ready to go deeper into your growth, self-discovery, and healing journey?
