Dan Zlotnick has been called “the Americana voice of Westchester County, New York” because his joyous, warm energy emanates through his songs and performances. After a three-year independent minor league baseball career, Dan began writing and performing original music. A child of classic rock radio who dug deep into folk music in college, Dan half-jokingly claims that Jimmy Page taught him guitar and John Prine taught him lyric-writing. His sound is like the multi-generational family photo hanging on the wall, and his lyrics are like the stories you share with your best friends after a hearty home cooked meal.   Dan has made fans and friends in living rooms, backyards, and small venues around the country, as well as on prestigious stages like Tarrytown Music Hall, Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, Daryl's House Club, Garcia's at The Capitol Theatre, Pleasantville Music Festival, and Towne Crier Cafe. He has opened for artists including Drew Holcomb, The Felice Brothers, Marc Cohn, Patty Larkin, Jim Avett, Jessica Lynn, Arlen Roth, and more. Whether it's a spin of his latest release, an unplugged solo acoustic house concert, a full band rock show, or something in between, Dan Zlotnick's passion for honest storytelling resonates with everyone who decides to check him out. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

We kick off Season 7 this week with the very remarkable singer and songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan. Aaron has released a string of compelling and original solo albums over the past decade. They are all unique and interesting, but the last 3 or 4 are real gems, both in the writing and the incredible production and delivery with Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! being the latest release. Aaron has had an interesting path to where he's at now, starting out playing in bands and jazz band at high school, and toying with a career as a jazz guitarist. As he realized his real passion was for songwriting, he left his jazz studies behind and moved to New York. He joined or started various bands there like The Madison Square Gardeners (great band name), and Semi-Precious Weapons. He also had stints as a side-person to artists like Marc Cohn and even The New York Dolls! Eventually, Aaron relocated to Nashvile and started his solo career in earnest - he's managed to stay true to his own unique sound but has also evolved in really interesting ways with each new project. He's collaborated with folks like Sean Lennon, Jack White, Tim Easton and Lilly Hiatt and is currently in the middle of completing his next album, and we get into that process as well. You can keep track of all of his work plus his upcoming tour dates at: aaronleetasjan.comBe sure to listen to the accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

John Leventhal is a multiple Grammy Award-winning producer, guitarist and songwriter who has been steering the ship on many albums and musical projects over the last 40 years. John first came onto most people's radar when he produced Shawn Colvin's successful debut album “Steady On”. They collaborated again in 1996 on “A Few Small Repairs” which was a smash hit. Coming up in the New York live music scene, John also worked with Jim Lauderdale in those years and produced Jim's debut as well. A late bloomer to music and the electric guitar, John has developed a subtle yet complex and unmistakeable sound that has kept him working as a live musician and producer for artists like William Bell, Marc Cohn, Sara Jarosz, and Rodney Crowell. Leventhal has also produced a slew of successful and acclaimed albums with his wife of many years, Rosanne Cash. As a songwriter, he's penned songs for Tedeschi Trucks, Vince Gill, George Strait, Patty Loveless, and many more. John has (finally!) made his debut solo album which he is threatening to release sometime this year, called “Rumble Strip”. I've heard it, can vouch for its awesomeness, and we talk about it on the show, although you won't be able to hear it for some months yet! John is a bit elusive - he doesn't have a website, but watch for the new album, and he'll be out on tour with Rosanne Cash - you can find info on their dates at www.rosannecash.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

I wanted to play happy upbeat tunes so grabbed The Doobies with an invitation and played Pink Floyd from my Obsured by Clouds LP. The music from Steve Winwood is spotlighted today, there's a song by Heart, a fave of mine from Marc Cohn, Walking in Memphis, and a few more. Hope it's a good one for your ears and your head. Stay well and make sure to vote!

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/LA-based singer/songwriter Amy Correia will tell you that she is not a prolific writer, which… okay maybe she doesn't write a million songs in one year, but holy crap, those songs and that voice will wallop you. Originally from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Amy's musical roots lay in New York City's lower east side in a scene that produced Jeff Buckley, Richard Julian and Jesse Harris. She discovered her musical voice while recovering from a back injury her junior year of college. She was actually a big fan of laying in bed and doing nothing but writing songs and playing around on her guitar. After college, she was playing around and got offered a major label deal, recorded an album with seven different producers and countless musicians, left her label and signed another deal, which would eventually become the place where she released her debut, Carnival Love in the year 2000. Another album followed in 2004 (fan funded) and another in 2010 (also fan funded). She opened for big acts like Chrissie Hynde, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson and Marc Cohn. She started living in Boston, fully embraced by “a collective of musicians who uplifted her with their creative camaraderie,” which included Kimon Kirk who turned out to be one of her most important friends and collaborators.Kimon encouraged Amy to record this new batch of songs on her latest release, the EP As We Are, which just came out in March 2022. During our conversation, Amy revealed that the recording session took place in 2015, but she wasn't ready to release the music until now. Kimon had persuaded her to revisit the songs during the pandemic and the plan was set in motion for the EP. We also discussed Amy's connection to spirituality, her affinity and experience in the theater world and letting go of control. She also opens up about her relationship to her singing voice, which is so special and always digs deep in me every time I hear it. I hope you enjoy this wonderful and vulnerable conversation with Amy Correia!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

This song by Marc Cohn touched me for its storytelling and its lovely musical melody. It captures the essence of this river of life for us, with a bit of sadness... but with that I am awakened to the contrast of the need for joy. I have been hearing again and again how we need to tap into the presence of God for our daily nourishment. When I hear a message I bring it here to share for you. If you feel weary sometimes, if your life today is burdened, take a moment to ponder that one day, there will be rest for the weary. Not just the promise of what awaits us in the coming kingdom, but remember we can tap into the Presence of God today, by walking in the son. Never forget the promise of what awaits us, but pay attention today to The Present - The gift of the Son, the Spirit and his presence... and take a walk in the sun.

Unless you closely follow the Americana music circuit, the name Paul Thorn may sound more like an elegant fashion brand rather than one of the more distinctive singer-songwriters out today. But the Mississippi-raised Thorn – a former championship caliber professional boxer who once fought the great Roberto Duran – has one of the more unique styles today blending blues, folk, funk, gospel, country and rock that pack quite the punch. Think Lyle Lovett with a voice more along the lines of Marc Cohn. Thorn is the son of a preacher whose uncle was once a pimp, and he brings a tangible passion to everything he does – you feel it in our conversation. There's an intensity behind every word, every thought, every feeling. And it makes for a compelling conversation with Paul Thorn. Enjoy.

Grammy-nominated Seth Glier is a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. NPR describes his voice as “otherworldly” while praising him as “an engaging performer and storyteller.” His critically acclaimed, emotionally dense catalog of work often draws upon traditional roots music, experimental instrumentation, and moody atmospheres that result in soulfully intelligent stories that can alternatively fight the power or break your heart.“The music of Seth Glier veers towards being indefinable.” – Paste MagazineWith five albums, five Independent Music Awards, and even a U.S. State Department-sponsored international tour under his belt, Glier has also played with a diverse list of artists such as Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, James Taylor, Ronnie Spector, and Marc Cohn. He's currently on tour and is debuting new music, including his two latest songs “If It Wasn't For You” and “Stages”, both releasing in 2020. Inspired by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, “If It Wasn't For You” echoes the young activist's own concepts about the transformative power of turning one's trauma into gratitude and awareness. “Stages” captures the magic and secret joy that's shared when close relationships evolve using the universal art of ritual. Both singles are available on exclusive, collectible 7″ vinyl in a very limited run offered only at his live shows. Glier plans to put out more music throughout the year while continuing to connect with audiences using his eclectic, often humorous, and always insightful artistry.“Also a producer and multi-instrumentalist, Glier is recognized for his intelligent storytelling, moody atmospheres and emotive soulful vocals that tug at the listener's heart.” – Earmilk“‘Stages' rides a steady, low-key beat with vibrant tones escalating by degrees until you're hit with the song's potent emotions.” – Popdust“The singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has been garnering worldwide acclaim for his “otherworldly” vocals and ability to craft a sound which is entirely his own.” – Gigslutz Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/quidditasfactor)
