This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released. Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller. The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within. Nick is the co-host of Andy Frasco's World Saving Podcast, saxophonist, trivia master, and one hell of a professional conversationalist! Nick just released his new EP with his band The Cultet entitled 'Concrete Lullaby' out now! Nick shares with us about the process of creating new musical projects that defy genre conventions. From forming an organ trio with Tommy Sugar and Neil Evans to recording tracks like the grunge-inspired "Waltzing into the Abyss," we share the highs and lows of producing original music, the thrill of performing at iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater, and the odd rise of the jam band scene. We've got some personal stories, hilarious nickname origins, and a reflection on the evolving landscape of live music and entertainment. We answer some very important questions with Nick like... Can a venue change the way we experience live music forever? Yes, we're talking about The Sphere, the groundbreaking venue revolutionizing live performances. We pit the dazzling visuals of recent Phish and Dead & Company shows against each other, debate the influence of social media on concert experiences, and share a laugh over the logistical chaos of phone-locking at a Dave Chappelle show. I was so excited to go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado because I knew nothing about it! I am very type A and usually know where we are going to hike, what we will see, and pit stops for along the way. All I really knew going into Black Canyon is that hiking to the river is steep & we had campsite 27A booked for 2 nights. Turns out, the park blew me away! I was also very exited to return to Rocky Mountain National Park and show Hayden around for his first time. We camped in the National Forest just outside of the park, and it ended up being my favorite site of the trip! In an entirely excellent episode, Chaz n Schatz take in their first bonafide Case 2113 in having renowned Sci-Fi and Steampunk author Kevin J. Anderson wind up in the Containment Unit. With over 180 books published, 50 of which being US and International Bestsellers, and upwards of 23 million books in print, he also happens to be a certifiable Rushian. His Rushian credentials date back more than 30 years in the form of his mutual fandom and appreciation club co-conspirator Neil Peart, with whom Kevin had an endearing friendship and creative partnership, from the first night Neil crashed on his couch in 1989, to their collaboration on the Clockwork Angels album and novelization, up through and until the time of Neil's untimely passing in January 2020. In what is surely a conversation Kevin could never have had with his good friend, he discusses his fanboy journey with Rush, from being a farm boy with a penchant for annoying music and pictures of Cannuks in Kimonos on his bedroom wall to the personal letters from Neil describing in "Peartian detail" the wilds of Africa. Kevin's love and friendship for Neil are genuine and heartfelt. He shares freely with the Rush community the recollections of his friend, sharing stories closer to his heart: - The first correspondence of kindred spirits (and other-nerdly connections) - The time Neil had to play Red Rocks Amphitheater in Kevin's Father-in-law's trousers - The publisher that refused to believe Kevin knew "the drummer of Rush", and how Neil helped Kevin prove he did - The journey from farmboy-fanboy to the guy who could tell the greatest drummer in the world not to "harsh his mellow" with his drumming self-critique after an excellent Rush show Kevin's gush of love for all things Rush extends to his appreciation for excellent tribute bands that maintain the band's high standard of performance, having been to both the Bubba Bashes, and traveling to see some of the nation's premiere Rush Tribute bands, such as Rush Archives, Rash, and others! Welcome, to Podcast Episode 184 featuring John Walker and Putnam Murdock. They are friends and a singer-songwriter team who also work together as playwrights. John has, as he describes, "some experience writing screenplays" and Putnam is a seasoned singer-songwriter and teacher. Putnam Grafton Murdock has performed throughout the US and is a middle school music and theatre teacher at Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. They have completed one stage play “A Friend's One Man Show” and are working on another play incorporating Putnam's music background. The play, however, is not a traditional musical. As of this podcast episode recording, “A Friend's One Man Show” has been through one table reading at Friends Academy in 2021 and a staged reading at Moses Brown High School in Providence, Rhode Island in 2023. Their creative process has evolved since they began writing together in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic. When the pandemic started, they discovered they could meet more often online. John Daniel Walker is a California State University, Northridge graduate and a transplanted Fairhavenite from San Diego, California. According to John, "While the platform was a bit impersonal at first, we took the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the creative process which, supplemented our therapy sessions that were no longer taking place." The process has allowed them to take time, revise, and edit often. it also allowed the duo to include their most honest selves in the characters. According to the friends and playwrights, while publication is a dream for the play, their goal has been to create and steep themselves in the process of writing. As a touring artist, Putnam started as a professional musician with the Colorado rock and roll band Chief Broom. He was the frontman. The group achieved a slot on the 1997 H.O.R.D.E tour, appeared in festivals at Red Rocks Amphitheater and sold out venues throughout the western United States. After graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002, Murdock launched a solo career and has since traveled across the country performing with artists such as Martin Sexton, Taj Mahal, Ben Taylor, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Kaki King. Putnam Murdock describes his music as being steeped in old-time folk, country, and blues.his songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music. As a one-man band or a full ensemble, the intimacy remains obvious in his contemporary sonic collages or classic ballads. His fourth studio release, "Long Time To Make Old Friends, was recorded at Bunker Studios in 2022. John Walker and Putnam Murdock speak with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, about their collaboration and interests.. This episode was recorded with Zoom. The Artists Index uses Zoom to accommodate our guests' schedules and to allow them to remain in the comfort of their homes, especially those who no longer live on the South Coast of Massachusetts. Native to Greensboro, NC, but currently settled in Denver, CO, Mike Hayes has gravitated towards an innate musical influence since an early age. From playing a range of instruments to writing music, production instinctively came next in his individual progression, leading to the emergence of the HEYZ project. Promptly garnering interest in his palatable dance floor techno from top labels such as deadmau5's mau5trap following his introduction to the electronic scene in 2018, HEYZ eventually began leaning into a more bass-heavy approach. Comfortably finding his footing in unfamiliar territory, HEYZ' avant-garde take on bass music immediately cemented its rightful place, quickly attracting attention from all quarters of the community. Narrowly bordering the line between a contemporary and nostalgia-inducing sound, HEYZ has since released on a number of critically acclaimed labels, including Circus Records, Bite This, Lowly, and Deadbeats, only further confirming his natural ability to appeal to a wide scope of audiences. Hand in hand with his skyward trajectory, HEYZ has also built an increasingly substantial fanbase through alternative channels such as TikTok, where he predominantly broadcasts his likable comedic personality. Firm in his whimsical ideology, he translates this seamlessly to the musical realm through his growing discography and live settings. With performances at large scale festivals across the nation among the likes of Electric Zoo, Imagine Music Festival, Red Rocks Amphitheater, and many more, HEYZ remains steadfast in his endeavors, proving his longevity in the dance arena. Welcome to Musicians Tip Jar where we talk about musicians and money. We believe all musicians have an endorsement match waiting out there for them. I'm Chris Webb, joined by my co-host and the guy who fits better here than the Dali Lama and Doritos, the Chip-Monk himself, Dave Tamkin.Today our guest Zoë Moff breaks down her solid method for getting endorsement deals, how to keep them, and what it's like to walk on stage at a sold out Red Rocks show for the first time.We are diving into endorsements today, and our guest Zoe Moff gives her tips on how it has worked for her. She is a recording engineer, bassist, and recent graduate of the University of Colorado. She is such an inspiration as she shares her story, which started with performing as a young teen in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and led to performing to a sold out crowd at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater.“Endorsements and sponsorships are basically an exchange. They're not going to give you free products or discounts if you have nothing to offer them.” - Zoë Moff The Hungry for Music story began in 1992, when founder and director Jeff Campbell organized a street musician concert to benefit the homeless. Within three years, he formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to expanding opportunities in music for children.Since then, Hungry for Music has placed more than 20,000 instruments in the hands of aspiring musicians. Children whose trajectory has been altered by the uplifting and life-changing gift of music. They have delivered everything from guitars and trombones to violins and xylophones to kids in 50 states and 32 countries. They collect and redistribute more than 1,000 instruments annually, and, in our 29-year journey, they've become a full-time force for good in the musical community. Grammy winning new age pianist Peter Kater and Paul Cardall, also an award winning pianist, discuss Peter's career and the history new age music. They talk about building successful and prosperous independent music careers in a genre often misunderstood and overlooked by the commercial market. ABOUT PETER KATERWebsite: http://www.peterkater.comFacebookTwitterYoutubeInstagram Listen to Peter KaterSpotifyApple MusicAmazon Music Peter Kater was born of German parents in the Bavarian City of Munich. At the age of seven, not long after moving to New Jersey, his mother insisted that he take classical piano lessons. At the age of 18 Peter left New Jersey with his backpack and his music books and hitch-hiked all around the continental US for over a year. He slept in parks and on beaches and roadsides across the country while stopping to play piano at restaurants and lounges for tips and meals. After logging in over 30,000 miles on the road Peter landed in Boulder, Colorado, finding comfort and inspiration in the Rocky Mountains which reminded him of his childhood upbringing in the Bavarian Alps. Shortly thereafter he started listening to the music of pianist Keith Jarrett; the avant jazz group, Oregon; and the Paul Winter Consort. This opened a whole new musical world and he began improvising 3-4 hours a night at clubs and lounges throughout the Boulder/Denver area sometimes 5 to 6 nights a week. After several years he tired of playing clubs and lounges and quit all his engagements and began renting out small churches and self-promoting small concerts through out Colorado. In 1983 Peter released his first album of solo piano compositions and improvisations entitled SPIRIT. His music was very well received and started charting in the Top 10 of National Contemporary Jazz Airplay charts and within a short couple of years Peter went from playing small churches to performing at 3,000 seat concert halls and at national jazz festivals at the age of 27. In 1985, Actor ROBERT REDFORD asked Peter to play at the then brand new Sundance Institute & Film Festival in Utah. Peter became the featured performer at many of Redford's “green” political fundraisers and events attended by many Hollywood A-list actors, directors and celebrities such as Alan Alda, Sidney Pollock, James Brooks, Dave Grusin, Laura Dern, Mathew Broderick and Ted Turner to name just a very few. In his concerts around Colorado, Peter started to share the stage with some of his favorite artists from his teen years such as DAN FOGELBERG and JOHN DENVER. John Denver asked Peter to coordinate the music for his ground breaking Choices for the Future Symposiums every summer in Aspen, Colorado and also invited him to perform at concerts in Japan and at World Forum events performing for dignitaries and celebrities such as Mikael Gorbachov and Shirley McLain. These collaborations with John Denver went on for almost 10 years until John's untimely death in 1997. Peter's music also caught the attention of New York City's legendary director and Circle Rep Theater co-founder, Marshall Mason and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Lanford Wilson. Peter's music became the score to their Tony-Award winning Broadway production of Burn This starring John Malkovich and Joan Allen which ran for over one year. As the newest member of their “A-team” in the following years Peter scored the music for 11 On- & Off-Broadway dramatic plays receiving widespread critical acclaim. As Peter's music spread across the world he scored more music for television and films and worked closely with his favorite environmental and humanitarian organizations such as Greenpeace, the National Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy and ChildReach. In 1989 a close friend gave Peter a cassette called Earth Spirit by Native American flutist, R. CARLOS NAKAI. Peter was completely taken by the beauty and earthiness of the Native flute. Peter tracked down Nakai and asked him to collaborate with him on a recording. In the studio they felt as if they'd been playing together forever and their first album, Natives, was completed effortlessly in just a few hours. When recording with Nakai, Peter felt he was embarking on a little “personal” indulgence, temporarily diverging from his thriving mainstream contemporary jazz career. But to his surprise, while his recordings like Coming Home, Two Hearts, Gateway and Rooftops were charting in the Top 10 of National Jazz charts; the new recordings with R. Carlos Nakai quickly became immensely popular in the alternative market selling 100's of thousands of units each and generated a solid and much more personal fan base. Because of the deep satisfaction Peter felt in co-creating this beautiful music with Nakai, he quickly lost interest in the “jazz” genres and shifted his focus to music of a more intimate “healing” nature. Peter then recognized a need for music in support of the healing arts that could actually aid in deep personal healing and transformation. He recorded albums like Compassion and Essence that provided not only a loving supportive musical landscape but also an invitation to dive deeply and safely into one's essential emotional and spiritual nature. Many more CD's in support of the Healing Arts followed as did more recordings with R. Carlos Nakai, seven of which charted in the Top 20 of Billboard's New Age chart. Peter's love and appreciation for the earth and indigenous cultures inspired him to invite more indigenous musicians to record on various projects with him including Native American vocalists Joanne Shenandoah, Bill Miller and Rita Coolidge; Native American flutists Robert Mirabal, Joseph Firecrow, Mary Youngblood, Douglas Blue Feather, Kevin Locke; and South American flutists Jorge Alfano and Ara Tokatlian. Peter also composed two songs for the immensely popular Sacred Spirit recording which sold over 5 millions copies in Europe alone. Peter's music continued to grow and evolve and found it's way into the 2000 and 2004 World Olympics, the Kentucky Derby, the Wild World of Sports and countless television shows like Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, LifeStyles of the Rich & Famous and Bay Watch to name just few. He's scored the music for acclaimed television series like How The West Was Lost; Wild America; Civil War: The Untold Story; Eco-Challenge and Joseph Campbell's Mythos series and films like Sirius, The Legend of Secret Pass and 10 QUESTIONS FOR THE DALAI LAMA. He's given concerts throughout the USA, Europe, Japan and South Korea including performances at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, JFK Stadium in Washington DC, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver and the United Nations in NYC where he received the prestigious United Nations Environment Leadership Award. Possibly one of Peter's strongest attributes is his love for collaboration with other artists such as Singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins; Tibetan flutist, Nawang Khechog; Sting guitarist Dominic Miller; Sacred Chantress Snatam Kaur and of course his legendary collaboration with Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai. He's also enjoyed performing and recording with many other talented musicians such as virtuoso reedman Paul McCandless; Maverick Cellist David Darling; Peter Gabriel's legendary Bassist, Tony Levin; and renowned Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Peter has often been called prolific and is said to have the “gift of melody”. His love and enthusiasm for the creative process, self-exploration, the healing arts and the natural world continues to inspire a well-spring of composing and recording. In a thriving career spanning over 3 decades and going strong, Peter Kater has recorded over 60 albums resulting in the sales of millions of units; has scored the music for well over 100 television and film productions including 11 On- and Off-Broadway dramatic plays; ands the recipient of dozens of awards and honors including 14 Grammy® nominations and a Grammy Award win for his 2017 Dancing On Water recording and his 2019 Wings recording. But most importantly his music has uplifted, soothed, healed and inspired the lives of millions of people all around the world. In this episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast, host Michael Shields interviews music critic and journalist Steven Hyden, the author of This Isn't Happening, Twilight of the Gods, Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, and (with Steve Gorman) Hard to Handle. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Washington Post, Billboard, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Grantland, The A.V. Club, Slate, and Salon. He is currently the cultural critic at UPROXX. Hyden's latest book, Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack Of A Generation, the focus of this episode, Hyden celebrates the life, career, and music of Pearl Jam, widely considered to be one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. Much like the generation it emerged from, Pearl Jam is a mass of contradictions. They were an enormously successful mainstream rock band who felt deeply uncomfortable with the pursuit of capitalistic spoils. They were progressive activists who spoke in favor of abortion rights and against the Ticketmaster monopoly, and yet they epitomized the sound of traditional, male-dominated rock ‘n' roll. They were looked at as spokesmen for their generation, even though they ultimately projected profound confusion and alienation. They triumphed, and failed, in equal doses — the quintessential Gen-X tale. Impressive as their stats, accolades, and longevity may be, Hyden also argues that Pearl Jam's most definitive accomplishment lies in the impact their music had on Generation X as a whole. Pearl Jam's music helped an entire generation of listeners connect with the glory of bygone rock mythology, and made it relevant during a period in which tremendous American economic prosperity belied a darkness at the heart of American youth. More than just a chronicle of the band's career, this book is also a story about Gen-X itself, who like Pearl Jam came from angsty, outspoken roots and then evolved into an establishment institution, without ever fully shaking off their uncertain, outsider past. For so many Gen-Xers growing up at the time, Pearl Jam's music was a beacon that offered both solace and guidance. They taught an entire generation how to grow up without losing the purest and most essential parts of themselves. In this episode host Michael Shields and Steven Hyden discuss the unique way in which Hyden decided to organize the book and what a cassette known as the “Momma-Son Tape” meant to the genesis of Pearl Jam. They talk about how a fateful night at Red Rocks Amphitheater in June of 1995 helped shape the band's identity and how the Grateful Dead influenced Pearl Jam in the later stages of their career. They explore Hyden's love for guitarist Mark McGrady, the singular way in which Gen-X often turns on their childhood musical heroes, how Pearl Jam found a way to survive and thrive well into their middle ages when so many of their peers crashed and burned, and so much more.Grab a copy of Long Road: Pearl jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation by Steven Hyden here! Larry Campbell, who served as Levon Helm Band Musical Director and produced or co-produced Levon's three Grammy-winning solo albums, which were inspired by the Rambles, had this to say about the book:"John Barry was the perfect 'fly on the wall' during this great last chapter and final curtain call in Levon Helm's life. He was the quintessential observer from the early days of the Midnight Ramble to the end and has brilliantly captured the details and the spirit of that wonderful timein this book."Born in the Bronx, raised in the New York City suburbs of Rockland County and living in New York State's Hudson Valley since 1990, John W. The latter is what brought John to Ulster County, New York, and set him on his path to Woodstock, Levon Helm Studios and the Midnight Ramble. As a journalist for the USA Today Network's Poughkeepsie Journal in Dutchess County, New York, John found himself in the center of Levon's Midnight Ramble house concerts, getting to know Levon, his band, his crew, his management team, Team Levon and, of course, his fans.Prior to serving as the music writer for the Poughkeepsie Journal, John wrote for his hometown newspaper, The Journal News, as a police reporter, covering municipal beats and writing extensively about local angles to the Northern Ireland peace process. John has also freelanced for RollingStone.com and since leaving the USA Today Network at the end of 2020, has been working as a freelance writer and blogger, and editorial consultant. In the wake of the publication of this book, John is already working on his next project and continuing to do what he enjoys most, hiking and camping in the Hudson Valley's stunning terrain, cooling off in its swimming holes and breathing in deeply its crisp night air.Purchase a copy of the Levon book here.
