Biographical Bytes from Bala: Laurel Hill West Stories #044 for mid-May, 2025 John W. “Jack” Merriam made his fortune in real estate development – Oxford Valley Mall, Cedarbrook Apartment Complex, and many others. Among his acquisitions was the Curtis Publishing Building on Washington Square, with its magnificent Maxfield Parrish / Louis Comfort Tiffany glass mosaic in the lobby. Another was Maybrook Castle next to the Wynnewood Train Station on the Main Line. He was namesake for the Merriam Theater on South Broad Street, and he left tens of millions of dollars in support of local art institutions. Yet despite his massive wealth Jack Merriam and his wives are interred under a simple flat bronze marker at Laurel Hill West.

Mary Radzinski is one of my longest friends in stand-up and I'm truly convinced we share the same brain when it comes to comedy. We talk about our early days starting out together in Philly, being funny as a child, nightmare casino gigs, touring with big-name comics, and since Mary saw one of the worst sets of my entire life - we talk about my epic bomb at the Boston Comedy Festival. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.Mary Radzinski is a regular feature at Helium, Goodnights, Cap City, and Punch Line comedy clubs. She's been fortunate to frequently open for comics including; Marc Maron, Dave Attell, Jim Norton, and Sarah Colonna — along with many other national acts. Mary was honored to open Marc Maron's 2019 sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center, Merriam Theater, and Shubert Theatre. She opened for Jim Norton's "Contextually Inadequate" comedy special taping at the Somerville Theater, as well as Rosie O'Donnell's most recent HBO comedy special at Levity Live. Mary can also be seen on TruTV's new series, Greatest Ever.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it does. We're completely dumbfounded by the lack of leadership going on in the political spectrum right now. From new Supreme Court rulings that are about as politically motivated as can be, to an ineffective government that appears completely broken. Lewis attempts to make sense of it all. We are now entering the summer of our discontent and Lewis is aware of it, from the latest revelations from the conservative questioned during the ongoing January 6th Committee hearings. But there's no shortage of things to rant about from rapid inflation that continues to ask the working man to make the most sacrifices while your host doesn't have the highest of hopes for the results of the impending gun control laws. So enjoy this week's Rantcast from the mind of Lewis and the minds of the people of Philadelphia. The live rants this week come from the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia, PA on March 2020. Philly’s art scene (and the city in general) just got a very cool new addition. It’s called Wonderspaces, and this beautiful new art venue brings art installations and pieces from all over the world to showcase here in Philly. Wonderspaces currently houses fourteen art installations that all play with the idea of perspective. The artwork ranges from an award-winning virtual reality short film about a dinner party-turned-alien abduction, to a room where visitors digitally paint the walls with movement. It’s sort of hard to describe, but definitely worth checking out. Listen as Jennifer McCreary, the General Manager of Wonderspace speaks with Kristen about the venture’s concept, current line-up, and plans for the future. Tickets and info at wonderspaces.com. Then, Riverdance is in town! Seen live by over 27.5 million people in 546 venues worldwide. There’s two potential reasons why Marc Maron hung out for almost the entire show this morning: 1) he had a great time, enjoyed the conversation, Bizarre Files, and the elusive Mystery Guest OR 2) he didn’t want to sit in rush hour traffic. We hope it was the first, but either way, shout out to the Schuylkill Expressway for getting Mark to our studio, it’s been a while. 2012 to be exact. Not much has changed since then – Presidential podcasts, Batman movies, Netflix shows – we picked up just like old friends. If you’re looking for El Camino stories from a true "Breaking Bad" Fan and the real reason why the renovations are still not finished on Mark’s garage, it’s all here, told by one of the coolest, most humble guys in the business. Enjoy this extended Fun Size Podcast. Marc Maron performs at the Merriam Theater tonight at 7:30 after grabbing a cheesesteak…. or hot roast beef, it’ll be a game time decision.
This was a very interesting podcast. Weeks back I posed a question on Instagram. "Is there truly ever a present moment in time, or is it constant future?" I wanted have a podcast with a couple people to discuss perceptions of time. I received a DM an hour later. I clicked on the profile and it was the IG for the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival I had to do a double take. I responded and quickly learned I was speaking with the founder and director of the P.I.F.F. Ben Barnett! Well that through me for a bit of a loop. I reached back out and posed, "Why don't we intertwine the concept of time into film and media?" Ben also liked that idea. We set a date and had a rough location in mind. Sunday came and unfortunately we had to bounce from building to building. We were out of options and started to set up in a hallway in the U.O.A. wing of the Merriam Theater. Luckily a student on the music production floor ran into us and said she had an open room for us to use. What a day. Exciting, fun, interesting and memorable. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did to conduct it. Ben is a cool dude and a great person to talk to.

Once upon a BEN Around Philly episode, Kristen is visited by three fairytale princesses. The Philadelphia Theater Company’s A Dream Is A Wish: Princess Holiday Concert returns to the Suzanne Roberts Theater on South Broad Street for ONE DAY ONLY - Sunday, December 16th, and Shawn Stone - the director of Marketing for the Philadelphia Theater Company, along with Heather Sawyer (Mulan), Emily Morales (Moana), and Becca Weintraub (Sophia) join Kristen in studio to give a preview of the show. Families will see Cinderella, Princess Sophia, Belle, Ariel, Mulan, Elsa, Anna, Moana, Cinderella and Rapunzel, all in one show! Tickets are $35 and are available at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre box office, online at philatheatreco.org, or by phone 215-985-0420. This show sold out last year, so get your tickets sooner than later. There are 2 performances - 3pm and 6pm. Then Matt Cord & Kristen Herrmann speak with Anthony Joaquim and Chris Cloutier, players on the new Philadelphia Wings team. The WINGS season home opener vs. the Buffalo Bandits is this Saturday, December 15th at the Wells Fargo Center. There are a limited number of $18 tickets available at WINGSLAX.com. And while you’re there, keep an eye out for Wingston, the new mascot for the Wings! Unfortunately, the show wraps on a sour note. Foul even. The Grinch himself stops by to talk with Matt & Kristen about his upcoming show at the Merriam Theater. ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ is a musical, and it’s all about him… the Grinch. Just in time for Christmas, and running December 19-29th, tickets are available at KimmelCenter.org. While the Grinch was surprisingly nice to interview, even so… the three words that best describe him are as follows, and we quote,"Stink, stank, stunk"! The show will be great though.
