I recently got a chance to hang out at one of my favorite haunts - the Broad St. Diner in south Philly - with my friend Taylor Kelly. Taylor caught the music bug as a young school kid in upstate New York and moved to Philadelphia from Boston after college in 2016. By the time she was in her early 20's, she was already a seasoned touring musician, playing trumpet in a big band (an actual 18-pc big band!) and getting a degree from Berklee College of Music. Taylor occupies a space in the music scene that I am honestly not as familiar with as I'd like to be but she is now my gateway drug into the world of modern Philly soul, jazz, and R&B.My first exposure to Taylor was the Iris Music Showcase. Inspired by Black Lily, the weekly early aughts jam session that highlighted early performances by neo-soul artists like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, Iris is an incredible monthly music event Taylor created to celebrate femme voices of the past, present, and future. Having attended several of these shows myself, I have only seen Taylor actually perform at one of them, as she selflessly puts a laser focus on the artists while drawing minimal attention to herself. She is a true embodiment of community building in Philadelphia and she happens to also be a badass artist and songwriter in her own right. But the magic in Taylor Kelly lies in her voice - a smooth, soulful, and powerful instrument, equally capable of quiet introspection, hip hop attitude, and even hard rock fury. Her latest single is a trippy remix of “Take Me” a track originally released on her 2024 EP "The Spins." This new version features a rap verse from Richmond, Virginia artist Tennishu. In our conversation, Taylor and I chat about her early musical life, her love of the band Butcher Brown (the hip hop / soul project fronted by the aforementioned Tennishu) and the importance of being intentional with your decisions in music and in life. It's a really fun episode and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!Check out the Iris Music Showcase on IG @irismusicshowcase and Taylor's official website https://taylorkellymusic.com~ JKF ❤️

Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)
After my month-long trip to Andalucia in May, I decided that staying home for a bit was a good idea. I would use that time during June, July, and August - quiet months in Charleston- to work on…. me. I know, shocking! A few short trips here and there entertained me enough without breaking my summer resolutions. I am going away for a couple of weeks in August and will be back with more news and resources to share! I rewarded my good behavior with serious pampering, including facials and massages. I also did some online “sale” shopping at Saks and Bergdorfs and snatched a few goodies that I had been eyeing for a while (more rewards for my excellent behavior!) I have read and watched and shopped and eaten and cooked. Here are the highlights: Read:The Mostly True Story of Tanner Louise by Coleen Oakley. Wonderfully charming and enlightening story of friendship across the ages and, by the same author The Invisible Husband of Frick Island, my favorite book this summer (so far) Zero Days by Ruth Ware. A fast-moving thriller that will keep you entertained. The Art Thief by Michael Finkel. Based on the true story of one of the most notorious art thieves. The poolside reading included Lucy Foley's The Paris Apartment and The Hunting Party. Both riveting mysteries very much in an elegant Agatha Christie style. Watch:Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. (In theaters) Absolutely fantastic. A huge amount of fun and a brilliant end to the series. Well done!Hijack (Apple TV) Idris Elba stars in a hijack plane story. I loved it. Ridley (PBS) Irresistible police procedural inspired by real stories of retired policemen who are asked to rejoin as consultants. Sound of Freedom (In theaters) If there is one movie to see, this is it. Eye-opening, well done, and touching a subject we should all be very concerned about. Collect:A new gallery in town by the fabulously talented Stephen Elliott Webb showcases his art and artistry in grand abstract bold paintings. They are fabulous! This new space is his studio and gallery located at The Jasper at 320 Broad St. Please make a point of visiting his website and his gallery when in town. Eat:Now addicted to the salted pecans from Trader Jo's. Cook: White Asparagus Gazpacho This recipe has changed my cold summer soup repertoire. So easy to make -all you need is a blender- and totally delicious. Serve it very cold, garnished with mini croutons or bits of green asparagus. I have made it both with and without the hard-boiled egg with excellent results. The egg makes it thicker and creamier, more like the texture of vichyssoise. Without the egg, it is closer to a regular tomato gazpacho. (The ice cubes help with the amalgamation of the olive oil)* 1 lb jarred with asparagus (with their liquid)* 2-inch piece of cucumber, peeled* 1 hard-boiled egg (optional) * 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar* 4 tablespoons olive oil* Handful of ice cubes* 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper or more to taste Place all the ingredients in a blender and pure until very smooth. Transfer to a container and chill until ready to serve. Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.
