You've undoubtably heard of Dr. Seuss. The author of The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who! The Lorax, and so many other classic works of children's literature. But... how much do you know about Ted Geisel? Ted is the man behind the pseudonym, and he lived a very interesting life. And he wasn't able to make a living as the author of children's book until he was in his fifties.Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious PrivateFacebook Group? Guess who's coming to town this holiday season? No, it's not Santa, it's Jim Carrey's iconic Grinch from the 2000 film, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" We had the pleasure of bantering with Broadway's Andrew Keenan-Bolger, who once donned green fur as JoJo and young Max in the stage rendering of this tale. We strolled down memory lane, reminiscing about our own connections with Carrey as the green grouch, and Andrew spilled the beans about a special screening, and his Grinch stint that surprisingly didn't draw from Carrey's interpretation. Spoiler Alert: The film's marketing blitzkrieg and its ripple effects on all things Grinch were quite a chat fodder. Now who can speak of the Grinch without diving into the nitty-gritty of its making? From Carrey's reluctance to play the Grinch to the Herculean efforts that turned him into the character, we've got the deets for you. We couldn't help gushing about the makeup and visual effects, clearly ahead of their time, but we did pause to discuss whether the film did justice to Dr. Seuss's original masterpiece. Opinions were split, but that's where the fun lies, right? Buckle up as we bring to you a rollercoaster of reviews, a fun game of guessing 'Letterboxd' star ratings, and a face-off between the recent Grinch remake and the original. The Grinch who stole Christmas is not usually considered an Easter story, but in this sermon, Pastor Sarah uses the tale of Grinch to describe the miracle of Easter. Just like the Grinch was surprised to find out he hadn't ruined Christmas, everyone involved in the crucifixion was surprised to find out that God's love was more powerful than sin, more powerful even than death. Even Jesus' closest disciples doubted God's power. And so do we. But the good news of Easter is that resurrection doesn't depend on us. God acted to raise Jesus from the dead. What does depend on us? Sharing the good news so that all the world can know! Christ is Risen Indeed Alleluia! Our Bible reading is from the Book of Luke, Chapter 24
The Country Music Dads dive headlong into the world of children's literature, pop culture and its intersection with country music. We discuss the viral video of Ludacris' incredible rapping of the book Llama Llama Red Pajama, discuss our favorite kids' books, which ones would make incredible country music songs and who should cut them. Show Notes: 2:22: The Kids Books We Love and Love to Hate: Dave and Donnie discuss the nighttime classics and some modern-day page turners for kids (and those reading them to kids). And what would a podcast episode be without some conflict -- so we jumped on a few we wish would just fall behind the bookshelf. 21:27: Books That Sound Like Country Songs: Before diving into who should sing our kids' book songs, the Country Music Dads explore the fairly significant crossover between country music songwriting and children's book writing -- and some of those people who did both. Namely, Shel Silverstein. 38:34: Who Should Sing These Kids' Book Country Songs? From Colter Wall to Miranda Lambert, the Country Music Dads consider the best artists to bring these books to life. 46:57: Dad Life Sound Check: This recurring segment is an opportunity for Dave and Donnie to discuss a song that is hitting home in recent days. For Dave, "Buy Me a Boat" by Chris Janson had been resonating in his house, while Lasers Lasers Birmingham's "Shorter Letter" was touching a chord for Donnie.52:22: Change My Mind: Donnie challenges Dave to think differently about the glories of shopping at Costco -- from the sea of beautiful TVs, to rows of top-shelf bulk-size booze to Costco staples, like rotisserie chicken, availability of eggs and the $1.50 hot dog and soda. Hate, hate, hate. Hate, hate, hate. Double hate. Loathe entirely! We're the cheermeisters this holiday season! We've got beers, a game, some really sloppy sorting, and in a shocking turn of events the magical mashup will be exactly what everyone is expecting!
Today we do a couple of truly classic Christmas films - but for real this time. One old and one new.
Well the holiday season is upon us once again and, if you're a long-time listener, you know what that means...we get to perform our own twisted version of a holiday classic and, if you're a new listener...we're sorry that you've joined us now...you're not exactly hearing us at our best! Anyway...without any further ado...here, for your listening pleasure (we hope) is our version of Doctor Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas...we bring you, How The Emperor Stole Life Day!!!
“It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags.” It's our official Christmas week episode, and what better way to get into the holiday season than to watch the millennial favorite Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, directed by Ron Howard, with our friend Jessica Delgadillo. We aren't saying this movie doesn't have its problems, but there's just something about it that gives us the Christmasy feels and keep us coming back to it every year. Is it maybe the funniest Jim Carrey has ever been? Seriously, it's like bizarre performance art. Is Christine Baranski's Martha May Whovier too fierce for words? Yes, to both. An impossible task of turning a 64-page children's book into a nearly two-hour movie, Ron Howard's film is like tearing into colorful presents under the tree. A fun, but messy, good time. We gush about Jim Carrey's insane character work and talk about some of the wild behind-the-scenes stories. Some of which involve CIA torture endurance to help Jim cope with the head-to-toe Rick Baker Oscar-winning makeup. We also dive into the possible queer coding of the Grinch. There might be reasons why the Grinch has a crush on the dragiest Whoville girl in town. Welcome, Christmas. While we stand. Heart to heart… and hand in hand. Looks like you've found yourself on Santa's Naughty List! How the Grinch Stole Christmas isn't just a beloved holiday classic; it's a deep dive into the complexities of acceptance, compassion, and the true spirit of Christmas, that also contains a Mean One!From Dr. Seuss's iconic original story to its 1966 animated version and the 2000 live-action adaptation featuring Jim Carrey, the Grinch's transformation from a cynical hermit to a figure of redemption mirrors our own struggles with loneliness and societal pressures during the holiday season. The live-action movie's rights were auctioned by Dr Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, in 1998; with a list of strict rules the winning studio had to follow. Ron Howard's idea to flesh out the backstory of the character, and to give more agency to Cindy Lou Who was part of the winning bid, and Geisel wanted a big name star like Jim Carrey to play her late husband's iconic green character. She got Jim Carrey. But his gruelling makeup and costume process would cause tensions on the elaborately designed set that brought Whoville to life.Christmas is about more than just presents; it's about togetherness and the power of kindness, regardless of how big our hearts might be. The Grinch's story is ultimately one of of acceptance and the true spirit of Christmas.I would love to hear your thoughts on How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! 'Tis the season for a Reformed Podmatics discussion about Christmas movies! This week, as good Neo-Calvinists, we take a little time to reflect on some of the most beloved Christmas films like A Christmas Carol, It's A Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Home Alone and examine what they get right, what they get wrong, and what they suggest to us about how our culture sees the Christian faith. As this will be the last episode of the year, we'd like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year from us here at Reformed Podmatics. May your celebrations of God's incarnation bring life, joy, and hope to you all this season. See you in 2025! Christmas is really all about the stories we tell. From early classics like A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, and The Gift of the Magi to new traditions like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, holiday stories shape our experiences. This year we're joined by Diane Griffiths, Sarah Hillenbrand Varela and Erik Varela, Siân White, Eric Lorentzen, and Laura Kimball as we peek under the surface of some of the most enduring Christmas tales.
Bob continues his series of holiday movie reviews, moving on to his LEAST favorites. Today he reviews How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but not the original classic. This is director Ron Howard's 2000 remake of the brilliant Dr. Seuss children's book (1957) and delightful animated television special (1966) which Seuss himself had also been a big part of. […]

In this episode of Shark Theory, Baylor Barbee delves into an insightful exploration of the character of the Grinch from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," challenging popular perceptions and drawing parallels to everyday life. He navigates the nuanced understanding of misunderstood figures by reflecting on how backstories shape behaviors and perceptions. With Christmas right around the corner, Baylor draws listeners in with a mix of humor and seriousness as he contemplates why the Grinch has always been his favorite fictional holiday character. With a keen focus on perspectives and empathy, Baylor Barbee uses the Grinch's story to highlight the commonalities of human experience, particularly the ways in which people are often misunderstood due to their circumstances. By examining the Grinch's background, Baylor emphasizes the importance of understanding others beyond their surface actions. Key Takeaways: The Grinch's backstory can teach us lessons about empathy and understanding others. Misunderstandings in life often arise from a lack of knowledge about someone's background. Personal growth involves recognizing the deeper stories behind people's behaviors. A change of heart can lead to transformative life changes and outcomes. Everyone is on a different path, and it's crucial to respect various perspectives. Notable Quotes: "It's real easy to look at him and just automatically assume, hey, the Grinch is the villain, the Grinch is the bad guy." "Every single one of us in some area of our life is misunderstood." "We have to start understanding that everyone is going through stuff." "Not everybody shares your perspective; not everybody's walked in your shoes." "A change of heart that caused a change of action caused a change of results."
Josh Mankiewicz and Keith Morrison sit down to talk about Keith's episode, “The Woman with No Name”. In 2006, two men out target shooting discovered the body of a woman in the woods of Kilgore, Texas. She had been murdered and her body had been set on fire. She had no ID and, despite their efforts, investigators were unable to identify her. The case caught the eye of internet sleuths drawn to the unidentified woman in the lavender shirt who still had some of her baby teeth. She became known as “Lavender Doe”. Members of an organization called the “DNA Doe Project” took up the cause and offered their help. Using genetic genealogy, they worked tirelessly to track down Lavender Doe's family and give her back her name – Dana Lynn Dodd. Josh and Keith discuss the dedicated work of the DNA Doe Project and chat about the impact their fathers have had on their lives. Also, Dateline digital producer Veronica Mazaika shares details on some unsolved Doe cases Dateline has covered in our Cold Case Spotlight series.
