Every week it's a different headline in Miami. A verdict against a commissioner. Allegations against the City attorney. Unconstitutional voting districts. And then there is the "cold war" with Miami's neighboring city, Key Biscayne over Virginia Key and ongoing traffic issues. Our guest is Damian Pardo, who won an upset victory and has been part of major changes in the region's biggest municipality. His District 2 includes Virginia Key, the island adjacent to Key Biscayne. We kick off season 10 with the question: is the war over? And we also welcome guest co-host H. Frances Reaves to the program. Support the Show.Subscribe to the Key Biscayne Independent today

If you've heard of Ken Russell's campaign for Congress, it might be because you're deep in FL politics, but more likely than not it's because of the TikTok stardom he has come into over the last year. The TikTok talent knows a thing about politics (hello, currently is a Miami City Commissioner), and how to meet people (voters) where they are (sound familiar), which is social media. His TikTok is a master class on how to show authenticity and transparency for candidates up and down the ballot, and we talk about why this is still being slept on by some of the major dem orgs. We also talk about the inner workings there (cough cough the flip flopping he experienced), the tea around Miami politics, and the impetus for his political career in the first place. During the early days of WWII, the Route 66 community of Miami welcomed over 2000 British Cadets as part of a training program to prepare pilots for combat over their homeland of England. While most of these young cadets returned home to intense fighting and a country already ravaged by war, there were a few that never made it back home to their native soil. They were tragically killed while training in the states and have been forever laid to rest along Route 66 in the community of Miami, Oklahoma. Laying these young men to rest on foreign soil attracted the attention of a local, Francis Mae Hill, who would over the next 40 years provide both flowers and prayers for these young men. Mrs. Hill knew the family members would not be able to visit their loved ones, so she voluntarily tended to their graves and promised family members back home that they would not be forgotten. She often considered the young men her boys, and her last wish was to be buried alongside her boys. King George VI would later award Mrs. Hill The King's Award for Service. Join host Anthony Arno as he talks with Nancy Bro, office manager at the GAR Cemetery in Miami, OK, about the life of these cadets and other notables buried in Miami. Ken Russell had a dream job, traveling the world kite-surfing and paddle boarding with is watersports company, when he got involved with the cleanup of the city park across the street from his Miami home. That civic engagement resulted in a run for office and a hard pivot from entrepreneur to his current position as Vice-Chairman of the Miami City Commission, recently re-elected in November 2019 for a second term. He entered Miami politics in 2015 with an optimistic view on positive change, and during his first term, Commissioner Russell was successful in passing legislation that supported resilience infrastructure, affordable housing creation, government transparency, and strong wages. He was instrumental in passing the Miami Forever Bond, which will invest $400 million into housing, parks, streets and flood mitigation throughout the city. Now seasoned in the blood sport of politics, Ken retains his jovial spirit and positive outlook, as he leans into a run at Marco Rubio's Senate seat. Swan Dive host, Stuart Sheldon, one of Russell's constituents, firmly believes that this amiable, Japanese-American, father of three, former YoYo champion, ukulele playing, wood sculpting renaissance man would make a fine Senator ... with both the policy chops and disarming persona to make Washington a less vicious and toxic place. This podcast episode features the story of the Miami City Cemetery. Aside from a city’s history museum, there may not be a better way to learn about an area’s past than a walk through its oldest cemetery. The city cemetery on NE Second Avenue certainly tells the story of early Miami. Miami’s signature graveyard has interred many of the city’s most important pioneers. From railroad men who were dispatched by Henry Flagler to the Miami River to develop the north bank, to opportunists that crafted their legacy during the early years of the city, many of Miami’s founders and contributors are buried in the city cemetery.
