The city of Dallas is launching a nationwide search to find its next police chief following the departure of Eddie García. In other news, Lewisville ISD canceled Monday classes and city utility customers were told to boil their water before using it following a water main failure Saturday night. According to a statement on the Lewisville city website, water service has been restored to all customers, but officials said the system needs to be flushed and tested before the boil water order can be lifted; Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday he wants lawmakers to focus on subsidizing private school tuition, finding new sources of water, limiting bail for violent offenses, strengthening career training, and beefing up the state's cybersecurity systems. Abbott also recommended that lawmakers devote some of the state budget — which includes a $24 billion surplus — to property tax relief, merit raises for teachers, border security, the power grid and school safety. It is expected to create more than 300 new jobs, and a total economic impact of $360 million in just the first three years. An upcoming vote at the Detroit (Mich.) Golf Club will determine whether a full renovation will be put into motion. The estimated cost is expected to be $16.1 million and would be paid for largely through a one-time assessment for members. The club also would allocate $2.2 million from Rocket Mortgage Classic funds for the project and voting by members will begin March 6 and close March 16. An approval rate of more than 60% is being required by the prospective lenders working with Detroit Golf Club. Lastly, Omni Amelia Island (Fla.) Resort enlisted architect Beau Welling to renovate its Oak Marsh Golf Course. One of the chief goals of the project, which has a projected reopening date of Oct. 1, is to protect the architectural feel of Pete Dye's original 1972 creation. The new renovation of Oak Marsh will join Little Sandy—the resort's unique and entertaining 10-hole, par-3 course—and accompanying 18-hole putting course, both also the creation of Beau Welling Design.

Former NBA athlete Charles Barkley articulated his dissatisfaction with San Francisco during the NBA All-Star Game's live telecast on Sunday. Throughout TNT's secondary broadcast for the event, Barkley entered a debate pertaining to the locale for the 2024 All-Star game - Indianapolis, where he voiced his thoughts alongside renowned sports figures like Reggie Miller, a former star from the Indiana Pacers, and Draymond Green from Golden State Warriors. Draymond Green initiated the discourse by expressing his dissatisfaction with the icy conditions in Indianapolis during the past weekend. Respectfully addressing Reggie Miller, he opined, 'We deeply admire you, Reggie, but I hope this is the last All-Star [game] in Indiana.' Next, Barkley took the liberty of comparing the Indiana weather to the situation in San Francisco, where Green's team, the Golden State Warriors, calls home. The tone of the conversation took a sharp turn when Barkley put forth a provocative question to Reggie: 'Given a choice between braving the cold or negotiating with the multitude of homeless folks in San Francisco, which would you prefer?' Barkley's punctuating remarks set the stage for a quarrel among the panelists. Candace Parker, a fellow analyst, quickly offered her rebuttal by proclaiming her love for San Francisco. However, Barkley wasn't swayed and dismissively retorted, 'We certainly do not.' He elaborated that the level of safety in the city was in question, implying that it felt unsafe to even roam around there. Locals were outraged in November when city officials decided to clean homeless encampments and open-air narcotics bazaars just before several world leaders came to the city for an important international summit. Ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, San Francisco was power-washed to cater to notable dignitaries like Chinese President Xi Xinping. This action accentuated the government's approach to handling the echo of urban decay and homelessness that has often marred the city's reputation. While it is clear that there is criticism and concern, there is also anticipation associated with San Francisco. The city has an upcoming opportunity to glamorize its civic pride as it gears up to host the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend. The main attraction, the All-Star Game, is slated to be held at the Warriors' illustrious Chase Arena. As debates on housing and urban decay continue to ebb and flow, it becomes clear that there is a steep path towards righting the wrongs. As with sports, a city's journey towards renewal requires team spirit and a deep-seated desire to rise above adversity. FLASHBACK 1999....... In November of 1998 George Joined South Florida's Power 96 Mix Team to bring a different flavor to Late Night Radio. On Saturday January 16, 1999 at 2:00AM with the assistance of the Program Director KID CURRY, George started his own Underground mix show called "THE LATENIGHT LABORATORY with host Liquid Todd (Shannon Powell). The Show became the most listened Mix show in South Florida SATURDAY night at 2:00 am spinning Underground House Dubs and Trance tracks. The show was a platform that introduced DJs from overseas to South Florida. Some of these DJs included, Timo Mass, Steve Lawler, David Waxman and John Digweed. The Show released a Mix CD Featuring some Cool Trance Tunes at the time and sold 10,000 copies in South Florida alone. Part of the proceeds were donated to the Joe Dimagios Children Foundation. On April 26, 2021, Jonathan Tjarks tweeted: “There's no easy way to say this. I've been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors aren't entirely sure what kind it is, but they think it is one of two kinds of sarcomas. I've already begun chemotherapy. Please keep me, my wife, and our one-year-old son in your prayers.” He then wrote an article for The Ringer titled “The Long Night of the Soul” explaining where his head and heart were at as he underwent chemo. By this time, Jonathan had been an NBA writer for The Ringer for a couple of years. He began his sportswriting career working for his high school and college newspapers. After writing for a political news website, Jonathan realized he'd rather be writing about sports, and so started a basketball blog. Jonathan also contributed to Mavs Moneyball and eventually earned a press credential that helped him cover his hometown Dallas Mavericks in even greater depth. After years of taking freelance writing gigs, Jonathan's passionate and insightful stories caught the eye of editors at The Ringer, who offered him a staff writer position. In this episode of the Hotel Design Podcast, we welcome Malcolm Berg, who is the founder, President and Design Director of EoA Group. He also was named the Designer of the Year during the 2020 Gold Key Awards.    Host Glenn Haussman and Malcolm start by discussing his background, and Malcolm shares what motivated him to be a hospitality focused designer. He attended graduate school for architecture and studied a variety of architecture design focuses - a path which ultimately led him to hospitality design as a focus for his emerging expertise.   Malcolm and Glenn discuss EoA's work at the JW Marriott in Marco Island where he talks about engaging stakeholders to help projects run smoothly. For Malcolm, creating extraordinary design is about finding those “little golden nuggets” in imperfections, and beauty found in those uncommon places. Then it's a process of extracting those factors and then distilling them into something essential. That's where the project's DNA reveals itself.   The hardest aspect of the design phase, Malcolm says, is creating the overall concept. To solve this issue, the EoA team works to understand what the “property wants to be when it grows up, and what is its personality.” Everything else flows from there. It's not a subjective exercise, it literally is sequential, he says, adding that everything else follows naturally from that point.   He addresses how the property must be something authentic and organic; not contrived. Malcom's goal for any project is to make that property fiscally successful and emotionally satisfying, which has myriad components to it from creating spaces people want to be in and how its run operationally. Plus, Berg says its critical to hue close to trends, as pushing boundaries too far could result in designs that feel outdated in a relatively short period of time. He also explains his notion of empathetic design, sharing what that means to him and how it relates to satisfying all project stakeholders beyond owners, such as how it relates to daily operations.   The next project Glenn and Malcom discuss is the Barcardi Ocho Lounge, a VIP lounge sponsored by the spirits company and located at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. According to Berg, finding success in all projects is about deeply understanding a brand, and how that brand is represented in a physical space. In this instance, they asked many questions to drill down to the brand's essential elements, then built a strong design around those brand tenets. This is the secret sauce essential to design success!   Meanwhile, his work at The Ben, Autograph Collection in West Palm Beach, Florida focused entirely on creating a rich backstory, inspiring overall design. Here, his team reached into history, bringing past stories to the fore. In this case, the story was driven by the notion of the hotel's namesake character Ben - a rugged type who's out hunting and trapping in the wilderness by day, and then cleans up and demonstrates impeccable style by night. The spoils of his work are displayed throughout, which helps create individualized moments and clearly defines the hotel's aesthetic.   But be warned - Malcom urges those to think carefully about creating Instagramable moments for the sake of creating Instagramable moments. That leads to poor decision making because you wind up creating erroneous moments that distract and take away authenticity. Berg finds it's better to engage designing space holistically, by thinking about the entire space, rather than a photographable moment.   Finally, they talk about The Peregrine Omaha Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton, located in Omaha, Nebraska and managed by Chesapeake Hospitality.  This former bank had a peregrine falcon family roosting on the roof, and during the demolition phase other birds flocked to this location - creating the idea of birds taking flight as a symbolic relationship to property design. This project also had a series of structurally related challenges that helped push Malcolm and his team to be even more creative to find success. Here, they had to lose some space to create better, more potentially profitable guestroom spaces. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Donae achieved a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Mathematics from Clark Atlanta University in 1998. He concurrently completed a second degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech, before he began his career in the information technology sector, initially consulting on Healthcare Systems. In 2003, Donae entered the alcohol industry, working on the promotional side of a number of iconic brands in the U.S, before he joined the luxury group, LVMH. During his 10+ years with the company, he worked across brands such as Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Moet & Chandon, Belvedere Vodka and Hennessy Cognac. While with LVMH, in 2011, Donae created the first-ever luxury champagne bar in a sports arena at American Airlines Arena during the Miami Heat's championship run. In 2016, Donae became the Regional Director of the Southeast U.S, Caribbean and Latin America regions of Armand de Brignac Champagne in which he was responsible for the brand's commercial and marketing goals in each territory. While with Armand de Brignac, he achieved a 206% increase of sales in the Southeast U.S. for the brand. Throughout his career, Donae found that in general, the wine industry was not embracing the multicultural consumer (in messaging, marketing/event participation, social media, etc). As an African-American man himself, he wanted to create a quality product inspired by his zest for life and travel that honed in on catering to the margin that had been overlooked, particularly when it came to rosé. With a commitment to create a St. Tropez rosé that is both authentic and exceptional, in 2017 Donae went directly to the esteemed Domaine Bertaud Belieu winery.
