As she swings and climbs her way through life, superhero style, Urbana High graduate Jessie Graff is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. After making her American Ninja Warrior debut in 2013 (Season 5), Graff talks with host Greg Swatek about what keeps bringing her back to the show more than a decade later. She's participating in the current season on NBC (Season 16) and recently qualified for the semifinal round.Graff also talks about learning to accept less than her best results as she gets older, while still maintaining a strong drive to be better than ever. She discusses swinging through her kitchen on monkey bars to prepare and eat dinner and why she doesn't have a single chair in her house.Plus, she talks about the personal-growth journey her mother, Ginnie, embarked on, from not being able to do a single pullup at age 60, to participating regularly in ninja events and being the oldest competitor ever to clear an obstacle on American Ninja Warrior.Jessie will appear in the semifinal round of American Ninja Warrior on NBC on Aug. 12, following Olympic coverage. The podcast is available at http://www.fnppodcasts.com and via iTunes, Google Play and other podcast apps.
Jessie Graff is probably best known for her athletic achievements on the obstacle course show American Ninja Warrior. In 2016, she became the first woman ever to complete Stage 1 of the Las Vegas Finals course. In 2017, she became the first woman to compete in, and to successfully finish, Stage 2. Her athletic evolution started with circus classes, which led her to gymnastics, then pole vault. All of that, combined with a base of martial arts training and a theater major in college led her to stunt work. She has made stunt double appearances in X-Men: First Class, Bridesmaids, John Carter, Sons of Anarchy and The Mandalorian. She both acted in a doubled Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984. As you might expect from her career, she has had her fair share of injuries, we won't spoil the full list, but a theme you'll hear in this conversation is the mindset, resilience, and adaptability to navigate those challenges. It's also fitting that this episode comes shortly after our home gym conversation, because Jessie takes that to an entirely different level. While most of us live in homes that happen to have some gym equipment in them, Jessie lives in a gym that happen to has a home in it. You might notice that when she talks about being a top finisher competitively she doesn't talk about her place among the women, she only talks about her ranking among everyone, including the men. Default Aggressive: a leader's mindset to take deliberate and decisive action. As leaders we face challenges both known and unknown, with real consequences from our action or our inaction. We won't always get it perfectly right, but doing nothing is almost always wrong. It's the final day from the US Army Fitness Truck at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games where Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff are joined by Jocko Willink, Founder of Jocko Fuel, bestselling author, leadership coach, podcast host and retired Navy SEAL. In this conversation, Jocko shows us the power of taking action aggressively and intentionally, and how the greatest leaders have a bias for action while balancing humility with confidence and a little bit of cockiness when they step into the arena of execution. He also shares the vision behind Jocko Fuel, the hole he saw in the energy drink market and how combining the same caffeine as a cup of coffee with fermented sugar cane is providing the right amount of energy without the crash; and it tastes great. In our drive to be all we can be, doing hard things individually and as teams, combined with a decision-making attitude, humility and some Jocko Fuel is the recipe to make an impact. No one cares about achieving your goals more than you; and no one can do the work for you to get there. You have to own that. It doesn't matter what industry or what dream you wake up with every morning, you better be the first one in and the last to leave if you want to earn victory. Power Monkey Fitness Co-Owner and Former USA Gymnastics Team Member Dave Durante believes the key the podium starts with work ethic and saying yes to challenge. Dave joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff from the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games for a conversation on his rise through the gymnastics world, battling to make the US Olympic Team and transitioning from elite athlete to coach and business owner. Dave's philosophy on progress is grounded in progressions; the ability to push forward but take it back to the basics to reinforce our foundations then get back after it. Dave takes us behind the scenes of US Gymnastics, sharing his personal journey of wins, losses and becoming the ultimate teammate on his bid to compete in the 2008 Olympics. Dave also shares the impact of Power Monkey Fitness, where he touches on the struggles of athletes figuring out the next step in their career and how CrossFit opened an opportunity for him to bring gymnastics to everyone. How much do you really know about the supplements you put in your body? Where do they come from? What do they actually do? What are they supposed to do? Are you ready to take it to the limit to win? Do you even truly know where the limit is? Have you been there, tested it, and fought through the pain, only to make sure you could go there again. But the next time you'll have the confidence to go there and even further? Our limit isn't a sustainable pace, but it is a place we need to be comfortable working in. Endurance Coach Chris Hinshaw joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff on the back of the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games for a discussion on the lifetime of work it takes to build capacity and create the adaptations in your body needed to perform with the best. Chris is the founder of Aerobic Capacity, a 10x Ironman Competitor, and one of the world's top endurance coaches having coached 35 CrossFit Games Champions, the US Military, and professional and olympic athletes to the podium. Chis and Fran nerd out on pushing the boundaries of your lactic threshold and how getting comfortable in that "death zone” must be embraced if you expect to win against the world's best. Mastering the double under isn't just about jumping rope…or is it jump rope? It's about harnessing a skill that's often more mental than physical and requires us to just go for it! Jump rope is also more than just a part of a cardio routine or a CrossFit workout; it's also an opportunity to bring together teams and build a common connection. Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff are joined by two Jump Rope experts, German National Champion, Mira Wate and US Army Warrior Fitness Team Member SPC Ava Georg from the US Army Fitness Truck at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games. Welcome! and Thank You for listening! This episode features Ginny MacColl. She is a mother, actress, swimmer, and Ninja Warrior at the young age of 70. No, they are not age specific obstacles, she is doing the same obstacle course as the 20 somethings, and she didn't start training for Ninja until her mid 60s. Her motto: “Strength is Ageless”. Her attitude is “you can do more than you think you can”. She started acting and dancing in her twenties. She started pull-up training at 63 after being given a diagnosis of osteopenia. That was not at the recommendation of her doctor but from her Ninja Warrior Super Star Daughter, Jessie Graff. I am sure you are going to be motivated and inspired by this energetic, positive, interview with Ginny MacColl. Her key points: Strength is Ageless Break any Obstacle or Challenge into baby steps Take failure as a motivator You can do more than you think you can Find your motivator and be consistent I can't do that, YET! ABOUT THE EPISODE They've broken all kinds of records. They are champions in every way. They push to perform to their full potential, and some can even claim to be the finest in the world at what they do. Elite athletes devote their entire lives to achieving the highest levels of success. Then there's the rest of us. But, how can we apply the same passion and dedication to achieve similar levels of success in our own lives? In this episode, we try to answer those questions with help from a superhero. Jessie Graff is a "modern-day Wonder Woman." Graff is the first woman to complete stages 1 and 2 of American Ninja Warrior's Las Vegas finals. She is also an accomplished stuntwoman in Hollywood. She's worked on films such as G.I. Joe, Transformers, Wonder Woman, and Alita: Battle Angel (to name a few). She's also worn a famous red cape while performing some heroic stunts on the TV series Supergirl. Listen to find out why you don't have to have superpowers to be the hero of your own story. What We Discuss with Jessie: Jessie's best piece of advice for reaching seemingly impossible goals. How she stays motivated, even when injured. The key to overcoming whatever hurdle you come across. How she discovered the stuntwomen's profession and became encouraged to pursue it. How she uses a mindset shift to avoid disappointment. How she prepares mentally and physically for each challenge. Various levels of dedication are required for training in order to gain strength and experience while being safe. Lessons she learned from her mother, which she applies to Ninja training. As creative professionals, we constantly have to reinvent ourselves to stay relevant (and frankly just to survive the insanity of our industry). The pressure to come up with new ideas and be daring is stressful at best, and debilitating at worst. Many of us are under the illusion that this pressure we place on ourselves gives us our edge - that it helps us continue to perform our best. But instead this pressure leads to limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome, and procrastination. And if it persists over long periods of time…even total burnout. What if there was a better approach to reinventing yourself, your work, and even your health & body image so you could fully tap into your limitless creativity? How different would it feel to be able to say 'yes' to the things that scared you and 'no' to the things that were comfortable and easy, rather than feeling stuck in a job you no longer enjoy? Or sliding into bad habits that are sapping your energy (like that sleeve of oreos that tasted soooooo good) and killing your motivation (just one more episode, then I'll be productive!!!!), you could actually rise to the challenge with a 'can-do' attitude and a believe that your dreams are possible? My guest today, Scott Morgan, is a PGA Golf Professional turned Online Fitness Trainer, husband, father of 2, a plant based athlete and creator of The Sweatville Club. He also happens to be 58 years old. And only in the last few years has he made this transition to online fitness trainer, plant based athlete, and entrepreneur during the period of life when most people would have considered it “too late” to learn something new and follow a passion that seemed risky or even foolish. Scott's story will inspire you to take a risk, jump out of your comfort zone and discover what it's like to live life with a "can-do" attitude. Episode Overview: “Sometimes it's really hard to convince yourself that you can do something until you've done it. It's okay to be afraid. It's okay to think that you're not strong enough as long as you try.” Success doesn't always have to mean reaching those big audacious goals. It can be as simple as wanting to be better than who you were or where you were yesterday. It's alright to feel scared or second guess yourself; so long as you don't give up, you will always have the power and choice to succeed. Joining me for this episode is stuntwoman and top Ninja Warrior competitor, Jessie Graff. A champion is never without setbacks, both physical and emotional, but with Jessie's drive to learn and grow, she continues to overcome them while shattering everyone else's expectations, including her own. Jessie's story is an inspiring one and I am excited to be able to share it with all of you so don't forget to tune in! Episode Highlights: Jessie's early journey pursuing gymnastics to becoming a stunt double How she bounces back from pain and injury both physically and emotionally Seeing the upside of setbacks The people she looks up to as her heroes Success shouldn't be strictly defined by solely reaching a goal How she defied her own expectations as a Ninja Warrior Her advice for those who admire her About the Guest: Jessie Graff, one of the top competitors on NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," is a modern-day Wonder Woman, breaking stereotypes and breaking records. Graff became the first woman to complete stage 1 of the “American Ninja Warrior” Las Vegas national finals in 2016, becoming a national sensation and breaking news phenomenon. In the original version of Ninja Warrior, “Sasuke”, she is the second woman to accomplish the same feat in season 34 of Sasuke, and she is still the only woman to complete stage 2 in any version of Ninja Warrior and Sasuke. Graff attributes much of her success on American Ninja Warrior's seemingly impossible obstacles to her decade-long stunt career. Her credits include Wonder Woman, Bright, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Die Hard, The Dark Knight, and being a recurring double on Supergirl, Futureman, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Leverage, and many more. She was awarded the Action Icon Award for "Stuntwoman of the Year." Graff's journey began at the age of three when she went to the Big Apple Circus and begged the ringmaster to let her try. The experience ignited a desire to fly high and push herself beyond others' expectations. Her parents signed her up for circus gymnastics classes which led to training in various acrobatic and fitness disciplines, developing her strength, agility, and adaptability. Jessie currently lives in Los Angeles and hopes that she can serve as a positive influence and show the world that strong is beautiful.
