In this solo episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we explore the Macmillan years – that remarkable, contradictory period of post-war British history when the country was forced to confront its diminished place in the world, even as it sought to cling to the vestiges of imperial power.When Anthony Eden led Britain into the Suez Crisis in 1956, he did so believing that Britain could still act unilaterally on the world stage. The rebuke from Eisenhower told a different story. The crisis exposed the weakness of Britain's post-war economy, triggered a run on the reserves, and revealed that the country could no longer act without American permission.Harold Macmillan – who became Chancellor in the aftermath and then Prime Minister in January 1957 – understood the lesson. Suez had been a tactical defeat, he told his cabinet, but it could yet prove "the prelude to a strategic victory." What followed was a decade of managed decline: the military budget was cut, national service was abolished, and the white paper on defence argued that spending 10% of gross national income on defence was excessive.Drawing on Kenneth Morgan's *The People's Peace*, we examine the "one nation Toryism" that characterised Macmillan's government – a form of liberal conservatism that would be denounced by today's Tory party as "creeping Bolshevism." Anxiety is what happens when my expectation assumes a guarantee that God never gave. August 16 - 22: WORK THE THREADThe week begins with the brilliant Sun moving into his own sign of Leo, leaving Mercury and Jupiter in Cancer for the remainder of the week to work on lesson plans. Aside from the Sun and Moon, no other planets shift signs this week, except Mercury jumping ship to Leo on Saturday. Rahu continues to make noise in Aquarius, aspecting Mars in Gemini, which creates some reactive weather; ensure that the details are clear before flying off the handle this week. There may be no shortage of ideas, but the challenge is distinguishing inspiration from impulse. Mars and Rahu are also connected through nakshatra parivartana, with Mars in Ardra and Rahu in Dhanistha, creating an edgy exchange that can amplify both the proliferation of ideas and the difficulty of determining what will actually work.We are traversing the fortnight between two eclipses, and this week the Sun has joined Ketu in Leo. By week's end, the Sun moves past Ketu in Magha nakshatra, where we connect with lineages and ancestral karma. If the solar eclipse of August 12 had to do with breaking through deep patterns rooted in family ties and finding the right thread to pull for releasing knots and blocks, this week gives us the opportunity to work that thread. We are not necessarily finished with the eclipse story; we are in the middle passage between revelation and illumination, taking what the eclipse exposed and beginning to decide what to do with it. The upcoming lunar eclipse shows the promise of bringing another layer of that story into view.Retrograde Saturn sits in the back of the boat, floating in Pisces and receiving the positive and supportive aspects of Jupiter from Cancer and Venus from Virgo. Combined with a waxing Moon, this could feel like an opportunity to recover, reset, and release this week. Saturn's detached perspective can be especially useful as an editorial voice, helping us evaluate the ideas and impulses generated by Mars and Rahu before committing our resources. This is a week for allowing the creative spark to meet enthusiastic production, while still giving ourselves permission to edit, revise, and reconsider.Mars, being aspected by innovative Rahu, will continue to boomerang that energy toward Venus in Virgo, who in turn aspects retrograde Saturn. Here we have an open studio energy, where the creative spark meets enthusiastic production. Mars and Rahu generate --> Venus refines --> Saturn edits. The combination gives us an opportunity to take a proliferation of ideas and sort the signal from the noise, turning inspiration into something viable. As bizarre as that narrative is, this is how they think over in France. And that global warming really is the fault of Americans who air condition everywhere for a few weeks a year.  You can’t make this stuff up, really. We also talk about supply chains, the Islamic incursion into the Midwest, and of course the Islamunists who are conquering America one election at a time. No, the final determination didn't lead to a final determination – which is frustrating; however, this isn't another Ground Hog Day scenario within this 3+ month conflict. There appears to be reason to believe that substantive, historic, progress is being made.

The episode offers encouragement to remain faithful through change, to let God prune what hinders your calling, and to posture yourself for a new season of purpose and government influence. 

When the winds of change blow some persons resist. Others use it to create progress.
