In 1974, Karen Silkwood wanted to blow the whistle on the nuclear fuel plant she worked at. Armed with documentation about insufficient safety measures, radiation leaks, and unaccounted plutonium, Silkwood drove to meet an investigative reporter. But on her way, she was killed when her car went off the road - an accident some believed was caused by the powerful company hoping to silence her.Though police said they believed Silkwood fell asleep at the wheel, the mysterious nature of her crash continues to fascinate the public and haunt her family. But now, two reporters who've spent decades covering the story believe they've discovered newly-revealed evidence that could shed light on what happened on State Highway 47.In “Radioactive: The Karen Silkwood Mystery” from ABC Audio and Standing Bear Entertainment, hosts Bob Sands and Mike Boettcher break down the story and use modern techniques to analyze the wreck for evidence her car was run off the road. They also reveal long-hidden audiotapes about those who may be responsible for the death of nuclear power's most famous whistleblower. For the past several months, World Views panelist, ABC News Correspondent and University of Oklahoma visiting professor Mike Boettcher has been embedded with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan. He returned to Oklahoma last week, and updated Zach Messitte, Joshua Landis, and Suzette Grillot on his assignment. Later on in the half-hour, he joins the panel discussion for an in-depth analysis of the Obama administration's Afghanistan policy and how the looming July 2011 withdrawl deadline will change that, as well as why Afghanistan hasn't been an issue in the Nov. 2 midterm elections.

The 2010 midterm elections are now underway in the U.S., but unlike previous elections in 2004, 2006, and 2008, foreign policy is not expected to be a deciding issue when voters choose their elected officials. World Views host Zach Messitte attributes this drop off to both domestic issues with the economy and healthcare, as well as a lack of US foreign policy success. Joshua Landis examines President Obama's speech in Cairo one year later, and the aftermath of Obama's message of mutual respect. Mike Boettcher discusses a new project he launches next month in conjunction with ABC News and the University of Oklahoma. And University of Michigan History Professor Juan Cole talks about his book Engaging the Muslim World. Since 2002, he's written the award-winning blog Informed Comment.
Last month, both the Syrian and French governments banned public use of the niqab, a facial covering common among some Muslim women, and Joshua Landis discusses the ramifications of banning the veil. Mike Boettcher explores the release of Pan Am Flight 103 bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed Al Megrahi, and whether or not there's a link between BP and the Libyan government. And author Stephanie Saldana talks about her book The Bread of Angels, and her experience as an American in Syria during the height of the Iraq War, and how she reconciled her daily interactions with Israelis and Palestinians while living in Jerusalem.
Fidel Castro made a rare TV appearance last week, and Mike Boettcher discusses what the former Cuban leader's denouncement of U.S. policy toward Iran and North Korea means. Guest panelist Suzette Grillot talks about rebuilding the island nation of Haiti six months after the devastating earthquake, and Zach Messitte and Joshua Landis break down Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington, D.C. Later in the program, NPR foreign correspondent Deborah Amos joins Joshua Landis to discuss her book Eclipse of the Sunnis: Power, Exile, and Upheaval in the Middle East.
On this week's World Views international roundtable, Joshua Landis discusses the Israeli attack on the Gaza flotilla in the larger context of the evolving US relationship with Israel, Mike Boettcher reminisces about the first broadcast of CNN 30 years ago, and Zach Messitte previews the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and what the much-anticipated event means for South Africa as an African nation hosts the tournament for the first time. Later in the program, an interview with Trita Parsi recorded in 2009. He's the founder and head of the National Iranian American Council and the author of Treacherous Alliance: the Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran and the United States. He visited the University of Oklahoma in November to lecture on the aftermath of the Iranian election crisis.
This week, hosts Zach Messitte, Vice Provost for International Programs at the University of Oklahoma, Joshua Landis, co-director of the Center for Middle East Studies at OU, and veteran network news correspondent Mike Boettcher discuss the European debt crisis and the failed bombing attempt in Times Square. Then, Joshua and Mike rejoin Zach for a discussion of Israel and Palestine with NPR's correspondent in Jerusalem, Lourdes Garcia-Navarro.
