Anne Marie describes the foundation's approach, which leverages a vast network to connect veterans to necessary resources and support. She explains how the foundation operates on principles of gratitude and generosity, deeply rooted in the ethos of the organization. "Everything we do is infused with the generosity of spirit and an ethos of gratitude," she remarks, illustrating the foundation's commitment to authentically serving those who have served the nation. "We're able to slice and dice the data geographically... to arm our policymakers with information that's relevant to their district," she explains, then referencing the strategic use of data to influence policy and ensure targeted, impactful support. Cohosts Julia Patrick and Meredith Terrian engage with several questions of Anne Marie, as she expresses a forward-thinking vision, emphasizing preparedness and adaptability as key to future successes. On January 29, 2006, Bob Woodruff was reporting on the transfer of power between US and Iraqi security forces for ABC's “World News Tonight" when his armored vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. Life for Bob and his entire family changed in an instant, as he sustained a life-threatening traumatic brain injury. Bob spent 36 days in a medically-induced coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his wife Lee got to know the families of service members dealing with the impact of hidden injuries such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression. As Bob recovered, the experience inspired the Woodruff family. They resolved to ensure that our nation's impacted veterans, service members, and their families have access to the highest level of support and resources they deserve, for as long as they need it. In this episode, we're joined by Dave Woodruff, brother of Bob and co-founder and Chief Development Officer of the Bob Woodruff Foundation, where he unpacks the history and mission of the Foundation, which invites people to stand up for heroes by helping our impacted veterans, service members, their families, and their caregivers thrive. Send us a Text Message. On this episode of THE SOULFAM PODCAST with Diana and Lexi, Jaime Rupert, director of US-based non-profit organization Rhino 911, shares her remarkable consciousness-expanding journey in the South African bush with a nearly extinct species. Jaime is a long-time PR expert whose billion-dollar generating work includes the US Olympics in Salt Lake City, Burger King and eHarmony among others. However, one call for help changed Jaime's life, set her on a soul journey and raised her consciousness. With less than 30,000 rhinos left in the world, Jaime works alongside the well-trained, boots-on-the-ground team of Rhino911 first responders lead by helicopter pilot Nico Jacobs to save baby rhinos whose mothers have been poached for their horns. Or just as terrible, the adult rhinos -- their horns ripped from their faces while still alive -- are left to rot and die from poachers' injuries. The horns, considered by some cultures to hold mysterious medicinal value, are sold from $60,000 to $200,000 US each on the black market. Not knowing her soul sought a different life path, Jaime joined Nico in the sky to track and rescue injured rhinos. And since then her life, her wardrobe and her understanding of nature and the greater universe has transformed. Jaime also convinced long-time ABC News war correspondent Bob Woodruff to film a one-hour special about the rhino's plight, the mercilessness of poachers and the remarkable work of Rhino911. What makes a great media interview? Your message is certainly important. However, when it comes to live TV, there are a lot more factors that play a crucial role to ensuring that your message successfully reaches your audience. These basics, as Tom Wisnosky notes, say a lot about you and the brand that you are representing. As a producer and director, Tom Wisnosky thinks of himself as a storyteller first and a juggler second. Whether he's directing a “cast of thousands” during the live 6-hour Countdown to Super Bowl XLVIII or producing a Wynton Marsalis concert, Tom succeeds because telling the story well means keeping several creative, albeit metaphorical, balls in the air. In addition to telling stories for BuzzFeed's Profile and ABC's Good Morning America Weekend, Tom has directed live, live-to-tape and prerecorded programming for ABC, PBS, Discovery, Buzzfeed, Tribune Media, and private clients. He collaborated with Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist Bob Woodruff on Focus Earth with Bob Woodruff for Discovery's Planet Green Channel. Tom has also directed popular events, hundreds of celebrity interviews, pregame shows, and also adapted and produced live televised scenes from Broadway's 42nd Street, Stomp, Rent, Hairspray and Little Shop of Horrors. As session trumpet player, Tom's love for music shines when he produces live performances for multiple top musicians. In addition to his busy career as a director, Tom served as Mayor of the small town he calls home. In this snippet from his full-length interview, Tom talks about the challenges of directing and managing live TV, as well as some of the qualities that have propelled him to succeed in media. Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 76th episode of "VideoFuzzy," reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. For this installment, titled "Building a Mystery," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about the first nine episodes of ABC 2009 murder mystery "Harper's Island." (WATCH video here) In Cross Connections, I highlight Christian Clemenson as a Golden Thread through my media collection. Then, in response to a review by the "All About Agatha" podcasting team of Kemper Donovan and Catherine Brobeck, I post a VideoFuzzy Book Report on "At Bertram's Hotel" (WATCH video here) and kick off my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD) commentary with a deep cut commentary on my recording of "At Bertram's Hotel," archived to discs 199 and 200. Moving into my more recent cataloging, I've gotten through disc 1,175. I talk about network productions like "Un-Broke," "Earth 2100" with Bob Woodruff and Brian Williams' tour of Obama's White House. Also, late night guest appearances by Pearl Jam, Green Day, Bill Cosby and Melody Gardot lead into comments on a couple Current Collection productions on Freddie Mercury and Queen. I found the NBC series premiere of "The Listener," second season finale of AMC's "Breaking Bad," and a beautiful voiceover from an episode of USA's "In Plain Sight" I wanted to share. In my Current Collection (digital recordings), I enjoyed the first seasons of "Kevin Can F*** Himself," "Kung Fu" and "Rebel," as well as the second seasons of "A Discovery of Witches" and "Motherland: Fort Salem." I'm getting into "SurrealEstate," I have some thoughts on IFC's rebroadcast of "The Kids in the Hall," and more of a housekeeping item but from my blog entry I find that I've recorded two discs X405. In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, comments on "Caprice" (1967), "You Might Be the Killer" (2018), "Mary Poppins Returns" (2018), "The Foreigner" (2017), "The Green Book" (2018), "The Detective" (1967), "The Fly" (1958) and "The Curse of the Fly" (1965), "The Brothers Grimsby" (2016) and "The Front Runner" (2018). In what I've been watching, I opened with our visit to the Cornstock Theater in Peoria's summer production of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (Revised)" which was a lot of fun. I chat about Joel McHale's "Crime Scene Kitchen" and streaming episodes of "American Horror Stories" ahead of the tenth season of "American Horror Story: Double Feature" premiering this month. Finally, LINKS to my fourth- and fifth-ever entries of "VideoFuzzy: The Video," talking about ABC's "Harper's Island" (here) and Agatha Christie's "At Bertram's Hotel." (here) Check it out! After you listen to a new podcast or episode, do you look forward to discussing it with someone? Different people will reflect on, or remember different comments or concepts. And I imagine these conversations happening at a local diner. I can also see civilians and military folks having a cup of coffee across from one other at a booth, not talking to each, but with each other. And you never know when friend of Home Base Darden Smith’s song Love Will Win the War will come on the jukebox…. Giving back to servicemembers and families comes in many ways, and for Lee and Bob Woodruff the opportunity surfaced in early 2006. Just weeks after his new job as co-anchor of ABC World News Tonight, Bob was critically injured by a roadside bomb outside of Taji, Iraq. The blast caused severe traumatic brain injury with need for craniectomy (emergent removal of the left side of his skull), and weeks in the intensive care unit. After 36 days in coma he awoke - and the re-learning process began – To move, speak and reintegrate back to life with his wife Lee and their four kids.An author, media consultant and mother of four, Lee began writing. Her therapeutic journaling would transform into the NY Times Bestseller, In an Instant, which she coauthored with Bob to tell the story of resilience and reentry from the caregiver and the patient perspective. While Bob emerged from the ICU to rehabilitation, Lee and Bob’s brothers immediately saw the need for helping not only the wounded servicemember, but the entire family – And thus the Bob Woodruff Foundation was born.To date, their Foundation has raised and invested over $70M through more than 400 grants, serving more than 2.5 million servicemembers and families. This year marked the 13th year of Stand Up For Heroes, the annual comedy and entertainment event held at Madison Square Garden. It’s been 10 years since Home Base was born, and it is fitting to sit with the Woodruffs on this milestone year, and it makes even more sense that Bob threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park that year (which you’ll hear was apparently a strike), and the start of a meaningful collaboration for years to come.Over this period of time, Bob has continued to report and educate all of us from all over the world.Along with four Emmy's for his work in overseas conflict and cultural coverage, Bob has recieved both the Alfred I. duPont Award and the George Foster Peabody Award, the two highest honors in broadcast journalism. Lee has been a contributor for Good Morning America and CBS This Morning, and contiues to inspire, educate and entertain with her best selling work.We would like to thank the Woodruffs for their hospitality and warm welcome to the Home Base Nation team. In 2005 in Iraq, the assault vehicle Marine Corporal Aaron Mankin [56:40] was riding in was hit by a devastating improvised explosive device. Four Marines died and eleven others were injured. Aaron survived, but was seriously wounded when his body caught on fire in the blast. He suffered intense burns on over 25 percent of his body. His ears, nose and mouth were essentially gone, he lost two fingers on his right hand and he sustained serious damage to his throat and lungs. You won’t be able to see his scars. But you’ll hear them. Aaron has experienced the unimaginable. But he has endured the pain. He has harnessed the pain. And he has emerged stronger at the broken places. Aaron is now a renowned spokesperson for millions of veterans, a patriot and a teacher. He is a true hero—and funny as hell. This is the single most compelling Angry Americans conversation yet. David Bellavia @DavidBellavia2 [54:17] is the sole living Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient to have served in the Iraq War. One fateful day in Iraq would forever change history. It also happened to be his birthday and the day before Veterans Day. On November 10, 2004, while serving as a squad leader in support of Operation Phantom Fury in Fallujah, David experienced brutal house-to-house and hand-to-hand combat that few can imagine. David demonstrated an exceptional level of valor that would have him recognized with America’s single highest award for heroism by President Trump in a ceremony earlier this summer at the White House. His memoir, House to House: An Epic Memoir of War was chosen as one of the top five best Iraq War memoirs by journalist Thomas Ricks and has been signed to become a major motion picture. Bellavia is a hero, a leader, a father, an author and a tireless advocate for his country, his state, and the Army. And his story is now the stuff of legend. He’ll share it in raw, candid detail. He’ll also share what it’s like to shoulder the weight of the Medal of Honor under the bright lights of a national stage. David has also been a combatant in the arena of American politics. He is a two-time Republican candidate for Congress, co-founder of the conservative political action group “Vets for Freedom”, host of a conservative radio talk show in Buffalo and a political ally of President Trump. At a recent White House event, Trump introduced Bellavia, and said "I heard you maybe are gonna be running for office, but someday I know, huh?" Trump continued, "I'll tell ya, boy I'll tell ya what, he has my vote. We'll have a brave politician for a change, right?” Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) has known--and tangled with--Dave on issues for over a decade. They’ve disagreed on the Iraq war, foreign policy and domestic issues. But despite their differences, they have remained friends and share a mutual respect and a deep passion for driving support to our military and veterans community. It’s a no-bullshit, timely and feisty conversation between two influential leaders. Paul is a combat veteran, author and renowned activist who has recently appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Pod Save America and more. He explains why he boycotted the recent Veterans Day Parade in NYC and takes Angry Americans (@AngryAmericans) entertainingly through the latest headlines you need to know about. From the start of impeachment hearings, to a wild week of football, to protests and division at the Veterans Day Parade in New York, to the latest 2020 Presidential drama, Rieckhoff breaks down the issues that are most important with a uniquely independent, inspiring and edgy style. Always with a special focus on national security and military and veterans affairs--and especially as conflict continues in Syria and Iraq during this Veterans Month. Bob Woodruff (@BobWoodruff) is a true American hero. A walking miracle. And one of the greatest advocates in America for troops and veterans. In 2006, Bob was reporting for ABC News from the front lines of Iraq when the vehicle he was riding in was hit by a roadside bomb. Woodruff sustained massive shrapnel wounds to his head and body. He was evacuated and kept in a medically induced coma for 36 days. Miraculously, Bob recovered. Slowly, steadily, bravely. And alongside his amazing wife, Lee, Bob has gone on to inspire a nation and dedicate himself to helping veterans. He founded a nonprofit, The Bob Woodruff Foundation (@Stand4Heroes), to help post-9/11 injured service members, veterans, and their families that has raised tens of millions of dollars and supported hundreds of organizations nationwide. He’s galvanized corporations, comedians and superstars from Bruce Springsteed to Jon Stewart to Sheryl Crow. And he continues to report on important stories from around the world for Good Morning America, ABC World News and ESPN’s E60. Bob is a tireless reporter, a dedicated husband, and father of four children. [19:18] Angry Americans (@AngryAmericans) highlights the helpers. After decades of preparation, Bob Woodruff was offered his dream job: the anchor chair at ABC World News Tonight. But less than two months later he was hit by a bomb in Iraq, incurred massive head trauma, and spent 36 days in a coma fighting for his life. When he finally woke up, the famous journalist with a photographic memory could no longer remember the names of his four young children. While Bob eventually regained many of his physical and cognitive abilities, his life and career were forever changed. In this candid and life-affirming conversation, Bob shares his perspective on invisible wounds, unexpected gifts and the joy of rediscovered purpose. In Today’s Episode: Bob starts his dream job: co anchoring World News Tonight and leaves to report on the war in Iraq (7:40) The moment he was hit by a roadside bomb (12:40) Unaware if he is alive or dead (13:00) What physically happens to your body and head when you are blasted by a bomb (21:40) Are there any stories worth dying for? (39:10) Wise Words: (On Peter Jennings) “He’s the guy that I really wanted to emulate; I think I wanted to be like Peter.” (6:50) “It was never the 36 days that the ones that were painful, it was the years afterwards, certainly the months after.” (19:50) “Once that miracle of survival kinda starts to sweep away, you realize that your life is gonna be completely different and you have to make this transition. (25:10) “You’ve got this gigantic world that you have to find your spot in, you know, your direction in, and that’s a shocking change, and I think that’s the blackness. I think the blackness that everybody that’s gone through this, goes through.” Now you’ve gotta figure out what you’re gonna be and what you’re gonna do.” (25:55) “I realized that one of the reasons of religion is, I think, to give you comfort about where you’ve gonna spend most of your existence, and I think I had a realization that this is exactly what’s out there. And you can have all sorts of thoughts about what’s written in the various books and it’s got detains in it that some either believe or don’t believe, but if you really think about it, whoever the prophets may be, what they’re really trying to tell you is that it’s gonna be nice when you go.” (27:28) “There’s nothing better than friends, you know? The ones that truly are your friends are the ones that stick with you when you go through suffering, and so those I still have.” (29:15) “I think people they don’t really see what their lives are until sometimes they see something worse.” (37:55) “If you don’t have journalists out there to tell the story, then you might as well get thrown back to the great soviet days. I’ve been to the countries where in no journalism, and you can tell the impact on the people to not have it.” (39:20) “Make sure that those around you are still there by your side. That means there’s a lot you’ve got to do make sure they’re next to you. You can’t just beg for it and you can’t just assume it.” (40:57) Links Mentioned: www.bobwoodrufffoundation.org In An Instant by Bob and Lee Woodruff: https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Familys-Journey-Love-Healing/dp/0812978250 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
