Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. Politics and diplomacy are both running hot today — from Gandhinagar to Washington, and beyond. In Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has hit the reset button — all 16 ministers resigned, giving him a clean slate to rebuild his cabinet. BJP insiders call it a strategic reset ahead of the 2027 polls. The new team, to be sworn in at Mahatma Mandir, could nearly double in size. Amit Shah and JP Nadda are flying in, underscoring how high the stakes are for the BJP's strongest state. Across the world, Donald Trump's back in the headlines — twice over. First, he claimed PM Modi promised to stop Russian oil imports. India flatly denied it, saying its energy policy serves its own people, not foreign politics. Then, Trump revealed plans to meet Vladimir Putin in Budapest to “end the Ukraine war,” right as Zelensky lands in Washington. It's diplomacy — Trump-style — loud, unpredictable, and headline-hungry. Back in South Asia, India has clearly chosen sides in the Afghanistan–Pakistan border fight — and it's not Islamabad. Delhi slammed Pakistan for “sponsoring terrorism,” backing Kabul after deadly cross-border strikes. The timing is sharp — just as a Taliban minister visits India. And finally, a milestone worth celebrating — India's housing mission just crossed one million approvals under PM Awas Yojana 2.0, with half reserved for women. A quiet, inclusive success amid all the noise Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Robert Young Pelton first became aware of the phenomenon of hired guns in the War on Terror when he met a covert team of contractors on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border in the fall of 2003. Pelton soon embarked on a globe-spanning odyssey to penetrate and understand this shadowy world, ultimately delivering stunning insights into the way private soldiers are used.Enter a blood-soaked world of South African mercenaries and tribal fighters backed by ruthless financiers. Drop into Baghdad's Green Zone, strap on body armor, and take a daily high-speed ride with a doomed crew of security contractors who dodge car bombs and snipers just to get their charges to the airport. Share a drink in a chic hotel bar with wealthy owners of private armies who debate the best way to stay alive in war zones.Licensed to Kill spans four continents and three years, taking us inside the CIA's dirty wars; the brutal contractor murders in Fallujah and the Alamo-like sieges in Najaf and Al Kut; the Deep South contractor training camps where ex–Special Operations soldiers and even small town cops learn the ropes; the contractor conventions where macho attendees swap bullet-punctuated tales and discuss upcoming gigs; and the grim Central African prison where contractors turned failed mercenaries pay a steep price. The United States has encouraged the use of the private sector in all facets of the War on Terror, placing contractors outside the bounds of functional legal constraints. With the shocking clarity that can come only from firsthand observation, Licensed to Kill painstakingly deconstructs the most controversial events and introduces the pivotal players. Most disturbingly, it shows that there are indeed thousands of contractors—with hundreds more being produced every month—who've been given a license to kill, their services available to the highest bidder.https://amzn.to/3HWKcwVBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

GOOD EVENING: The show begins in Iran's neighboring countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Baluchistan, and Kurdistan, asking about relations with Tehran. We then move to Columbia University and Yale University campuses for demonstrations with antisemitic messages. Next, we go to Ukraine's front line, where troops await weapons and ammunition, and then to Kyiv and the Rada for a vote on mobilization and demobilization (which has not yet occurred). We explore what could have been Israel's counterstrike, with John Bolton suggesting striking suspected nuclear weapons facilities. We then shift focus to East Asia and the alliance against the People's Republic of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA). From there, we travel to Caracas, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Bogota. Finally, we discuss the PLA Aerospace Force, a combat command focusing on orbit and the moon. 1957

//The Wire//2130Z March 19, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: CONFLICT ERUPTS ON AFGHAN/PAKISTANI BORDER. CHINA INCREASES PARTNERSHIP WITH NIGER.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Niger: As Nigerien attitudes towards an American presence in Niger remain tepid, Chinese influence continues to grow throughout the region. Yesterday, the Governor of the State of Niger met with representatives of the China Railway Corporation with the intent to explore the options of creating a railway network that would span the majority of the country.Afghanistan: Conflict has erupted between Taliban forces and Pakistani border guards as Afghan forces seize key terrain in what is traditionally referred to as the semi-autonomous Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) in Pakistan.-HomeFront-Texas: The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Texas, ruling that the state can enforce immigration law by making illegal entry a state crime.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As the extremely rugged terrain along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border is some of the most remote and inaccessible land on Earth, it is challenging to determine how far Afghan forces have gone in conducting limited assaults into what is technically Pakistan. The nature of the conflict is also likely not a full-scale invasion, but rather typical of the conflict throughout the region; mostly skirmishes and limited engagements between small units on both sides. However, this does indicate that Afghanistan is not just interesting in, but also capable of, settling old scores with historic adversaries.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

With the drama around Imran Khan's arrest peaking in Pakistan's Punjab, Sanjay Dixit catches up with Tahir Gora to discuss whether the seeds of Pakistan's woes were sown at the very inception in the way this country was created, and the way it threw out its most productive classes in the name of Islam. Add military domination and the conundrum is complete.
Dr. Jonathan Schroden joins us to talk about AFPAK relations now that the Taliban are in charge. Throughout the episode, Dr. Schroden mentions a couple of articles addressing any potential rifts within the Taliban government.
