How should we raise children in a world that is burning? This is the question that Berkeley poet Rachel Richardson contemplates in her new collection, “Smother.” As wildfires beset California, Richardson worried about the impact it would have on the land, communities and her own family. “The smoke is not cruel, only truthful,” she writes. And throughout the collection, fire, smoke and air flecked with ash become metaphors and characters as Richardson searches for resilience, defiance, and ultimately, hope. Guests: Rachel Richardson, poet, "Copperhead, Hundred-Year Wave," and, most recently, "Smother"; co-founder, Left Margin LIT in Berkeley; recipient of the Stegner and NEA Fellowships. This week on A Walk In The Park Jane discusses how nature takes it as it comes.
There is, across the country, some upheaval going on as the Trump administration works to reduce the size of the federal government. Whether you support that effort or oppose it, you can't deny there's not upheaval going on. That upheaval has hit all federal government agencies. At the National Park Service, seasonal ranger job offers were rescinded back in January. Roughly 1,000 probationary employees were fired on Valentine's Day. Another 700-1000 Park Service employees took up the administration's offer to resign now, but stay on the payroll through the end of the fiscal year. And this week the Park Service and other government agencies are expected to send their plans for a reduction-in-force to the administration. To discuss these developments, we've invited Rick Mossman, president of the Association of National Park Rangers, to join us.

The world of work has changed forever. Disruption isn't an event anymore—it's a constant state. McKinsey calls this the "Era of Perpetual Upheaval," where uncertainty is the new normal. And yet, most leaders and organizations still rely on outdated change management strategies that simply don't work. The old way of adapting is dead. So what do we do? We rewire our brains. In this episode, Dr. Bray dives into the neuroscience of uncertainty, uncovering why change triggers survival mode in the brain, and—most importantly—how we can train ourselves to think, respond, and lead differently. We'll break down the cognitive traps that hold us back, the psychological tools that give us an edge, and the brain-based strategies that separate those who thrive from those who just survive. If you're tired of waiting for things to "settle down," this episode is for you. The future belongs to those who master uncertainty—not fear it. QUOTES BY DR. BRAY "Change just isn't something that we react to anymore. It's something that we must be built for.” “In a world where uncertainty is the only certainty, we must go beyond survival and learn to thrive.” "The brain learns best from action—small, rapid experiments retrain the brain to be comfortable with uncertainty." "The future belongs to those who train their minds to lead in crisis, not just react to it."

Hello to you listening in Hamburg, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. We are living in a time of historic upheaval. But what if this currently confusing, chaotic, confounding, cultural churn is stumbling toward change that reveals the hidden roots of social injustice for what they are so that we can reconfigure for good? How easily the safeguards can be leaped. And they have been. We can clutch our pearls and bemoan the times we live in; or, we can invite our feelings of hopelessness to give way to action, to repair, restore, and renew out of the ashes of the old ways. We are responsible for making change because we're the only “sentient force” that can.Question: What one small grand gesture are you committed to take on behalf of what you love and care for? These words from the Irish poet Seamus Heaney may motivate and sustain you wherever your feet touch the ground, whatever progress you are intent on making today. “History says, Don't hopeOn this side of the grave...But then, once in a lifetimeThe longed-for tidal waveOf justice can rise upAnd hope and history rhyme.” [“The Cure at Troy” Seamus Heaney]BONUS: Seamus Heaney reads his poem, The Cure at TroyThe Cure at Troy (full text)"Human beings sufferThey torture one another,They get hurt and get hard.No poem or play or songCan fully right a wrongInflicted and endured. The innocent in gaolsBeat on their bars together.A hunger-striker's fatherStands in the graveyard dumb. The police widow in veilsFaints at the funeral home. History says, Don't hopeOn this side of the grave…But then, once in a lifetimeThe longed-for tidal waveOf justice can rise up,And hope and history rhyme. So hope for a great sea-changeOn the far side of revenge.Believe that a further shoreIs reachable from here.Believe in miraclesAnd cures and healing wells. Call miracle self-healing:The utter, self-revealingDouble-take of feeling. If there's fire on the mountainOr lightning and stormAnd a god speaks from the sky That means someone is hearingThe outcry and the birth-cryOf new life at its term.It means once in a lifetimeThat justice can rise upAnd hope and history rhyme. (Conversation recorded on November 22nd, 2024) The first few months of the new year have brought a cacophony of political news and power plays, bringing with it an uproar of public outrage in the United States and around the world. In the midst of an unprecedented moment in modern history, what can history – and even mathematics – teach us about moments of political unrest and upheaval? In this episode, Nate is joined by complexity scientist, Peter Turchin, to discuss his work modeling the key factors that drive patterns of peace, turmoil, and revolution in nations throughout history - and how those connect to the situation in the United States today. Turchin outlines the cyclical nature of ‘elite overproduction' and its role in political disintegration, emphasizing the importance of economic inequality and elite struggles for control. How does a declining standard of living, as seen in the U.S. over recent decades, affect a nation's stability, civic engagement, and levels of violence? In what ways has history been shaped by the ‘wealth pump' moving economic power towards the hands of the few? Lastly, how can we use these historical lessons to strengthen our communities and act collectively in times of chaos and instability? About Peter Turchin: Peter Turchin is a complexity scientist who works in the field of historical social science that he and his colleagues call Cliodynamics. His research interests lie at the intersection of social and cultural evolution, historical macrosociology, economic history and cliometrics, mathematical modeling of long-term social processes, and the construction and analysis of historical databases. Currently his main research effort is directing the Seshat Databank project (and its offshoot, CrisisDB) which builds and analyzes a massive historical database that enables us to empirically test predictions from theories attempting to explain why and how complex human societies evolved, and why they periodically experience political breakdown. Turchin has authored ten books. His most recent books are End Times: Elites, Counter-Elites, and the Path of Political Disintegration and The Great Holocene Transformation (forthcoming). In the first half, financial expert and publisher of the Solari Report, Catherine Austin Fitts, discussed the current state of the financial world, and how we are in a period of significant upheaval, with increasing risks of our banking systems falling to central control. She pointed out the importance of small banks, arguing, "The more small banks you have, the more you can produce growth without inflation," and criticized the consolidation of the banking system, which has seen a decline from 15,000 banks to just over 4,000. On the topic of cryptocurrency, she voiced skepticism about its current trajectory, suggesting that Bitcoin has been "hijacked" for speculative purposes. "What could have been a really great global payment system" has turned into a tool for pump and dump schemes, she lamented."The government has been in serious violation of financial management laws for many years," she continued. Fitts expressed concern over the increasing control central banks are seeking through digital currencies: "If we go to an all-digital monetary system, we're looking at the ability for the central bankers to control it." She described this potential shift as a "financial coup," where fiscal policies could be manipulated without public representation. Financial freedom, the ability to transact without interference, would likely be compromised by a fully digital system that could lead to invasive surveillance and control over our personal finances, she further cautioned.----------------In the latter half, near-death experiencer Dannion Brinkley shared his profound near-death encounters and the insights he gained from them. He has survived multiple brushes with death, including being struck by lightning twice and enduring extensive surgeries. He recounted the lightning strikes that happened to him in the 1970s, revealing that both incidents occurred while he was on the phone during a storm. He described some of the mystical aspects of his near-death experiences (NDEs), including a painful "panoramic life review" where he felt the impact of his actions on others, saying, "I had to become every person that I'd ever encountered and feel the direct results of my interaction." Realizing he could do much better in his interactions, the NDE acted as a catalyst for significant personal transformations in his life.During his NDEs, he also received prophetic visions, some of which he believes will possibly play out in 2025, including solar flares. He also saw a "battle for the souls of humankind" in healthcare, emphasizing the need for compassion and closure for those nearing the end of life. "You take a breath when you come here, and you let a breath out when you leave," he remarked, highlighting the transient nature of life and the importance of learning from our experiences. Through his Twilight Brigade organization, Brinkley has been a hospice volunteer for 40 years, attending to hundreds of vets at the end of their lives.

Data privacy is an ever-increasing concern, particularly in finance, where sensitive information like personal and business bank statements, loans, credit information, driver's licenses, and Social Security numbers are involved. Because of this, real estate is particularly vulnerable.
