Quran Commentary and the Biblical Turn (de Gruyter, 2024) examines the exegetical relationship between the Quran and the Bible in Islamic intellectual history. As the two have been called "intertwined scriptures" due to the Quran's frequent invocation of biblical narratives and figures, a question is raised: what is the history of Muslims' exegetical engagement with the biblical text? Through a survey of 179 Quran commentaries, the book establishes itself with foundations in the longitudinal history of the Bible in Quranic exegesis. From that point, the book offers detailed case studies and historical contextualisation of the history of the use of the Biblical text in Quranic commentaries, which culminated in a “Biblical turn” in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. This Biblical Turn, which had global influences and impacts, did not only generate new Muslim views of the Bible but even new interpretations of the Quran itself. Quran Commentary and the Biblical Turn makes interventions in several fields, including Quranic Studies and Biblical reception studies, as well as sub-fields of Islamic Studies focusing on tafsir and Islam in modernity. The book was awarded the BRAIS–De Gruyter Prize in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World. Samuel Ross is an Associate Professor at Texas Christian University in Dallas, Texas, USA. When some Christians hear the word "Muslim," their knee-jerk response is concern…fear…maybe even resentment. But when the Bible says, “God so loved the world,” He includes Muslims. And God is doing fantastic—in some cases—miraculous things through the Muslim world—especially in the Middle East. This week on The Land and the Book, an update on God's work in the Muslim world. Meaning ‘language of the coasts' in Arabic, Swahili emerged in East Africa many centuries ago through contact with the wider Muslim world. Although the language is most often linked with Kenya and Tanzania, Swahili was also used as a lingua franca as far north as Somalia and as far south as Mozambique—a country whose name derives from that of a fifteenth century Muslim ruler, Musa Bin Mbiki. In this episode, we explore the little-known history of Swahili in Mozambique, where the language became a rich poetic vehicle of religious teachings. After an overview of Swahili under the Portuguese rulers and the sultans of Angoche, we take a closer look at performances of the Nazajina, an epic poem recounting the last days of the Prophet. Finally, we zoom back out to the big picture by asking how Mozambiquan Swahili helps us rethink the notion of ‘world literature.' Nile Green talks to Clarissa Vierke, author of On the Poetics of the Utendi: A Critical Edition of the Nineteenth-Century Swahili Poem “Utendi wa Haudaji” (Lit, 2011).

There is a time to wage wars, Rabbi Michael Melchior says, and there is a time to make peace. An internationally renowned Jewish leader, thinker, and activist, he has long dedicated his life to fighting for human rights and peace—whether for Soviet Jews in the 1960s or Palestinians and Israelis in 2024. In the past, he was a representative of the Meimad Knesset Party, International Director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, and founder with the late Sheikh Abdullah Nimer Darwish of the Religious Peace Initiative, where he is still active today. The list of his accolades and accomplishments are long. Now, he joins us to answer 18 questions on Israel, including the Israel-Hamas War, prayer after October 7, and why peace is still possible. This interview was held on Dec. 25.Here are our 18 questions:As an Israeli, and as a Jew, how are you feeling at this moment in Israeli history? What has been Israel's greatest success and greatest mistake in its war against Hamas? How have your religious views changed since Oct. 7? What do you look for in deciding which Knesset party to vote for?Which is more important for Israel: Judaism or democracy?Should Israel treat its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens the same? Now that Israel already exists, what is the purpose of Zionism? Is opposing Zionism inherently antisemitic?Should Israel be a religious state? If you were making the case for Israel, where would you begin?Should all Israelis serve in the army? Can questioning the actions of Israel's government and army — even in the context of this war — be a valid form of love and patriotism? What do you think is the most legitimate criticism leveled against Israel today?Do you think the State of Israel is part of the final redemption? Is Messianism helpful or harmful to Israel?Do you think peace between Israelis and Palestinians will happen within your lifetime?Where do you identify on Israel's political and religious spectrum, and do you have friends on the “other side”?Do you have more hope or fear for Israel and the Jewish People?

Bashar al-Assad, like his father before him, presided over a state of terror, with mass disappearances, secret police repression and a brutal, corrupt state machinery that governed through fear. Assad had four secret service agencies (mukhabarat) that worked independently. If you got onto a list, your life would become a never-ending Kafkaesque tragedy. All four had to pardon you before you could be absolved of any guilt. Ordinary Syrians talked in hushed tones in case stray criticism of the state would be misconstrued as insurrection. Assad was a ‘god' who had to be adored by his people. What has happened over these past two weeks is truly spectacular. But how did we get here? With the speed at which developments in Syria are unfolding after the fall of the Assad regime, dynamics in the country and the region are in flux. One question many are asking, however, is whether a decade or so of backing elements of Syria's armed opposition is now about to pay off for Turkey and President Erdogan. It appears the Chinese Communist Party is launching a charm campaign at the Muslim world. This includes new propaganda programs in China, and new pushes on the diplomatic stage where it seems the CCP is trying to win new support among Muslim countries. Yet, behind the scenes, the CCP has continued its brutal human rights abuses of Muslims, and its diplomatic push is already running into problems. In this episode of Crossroads we'll discuss this campaign, and what's really at work. Michael Cook's "A History of the Muslim World" is my favourite book of 2024. Together, we discussed: - Did Islamic science weaken due to religious authoritarianism? - Why, in the Middle East and North Africa, were there so few peasant rebellions? - Theologically, how important was Ghazali? - What determined the rate at which people converted to Islam? - Why was there so much religious syncretism and diversity in the Ottoman Empire? - Why did the Muslim world fall behind economically? - Did the Ottoman Empire ban the printing press? - Why is South Asia the only place where Muslims ruled for hundreds of years yet remained a minority? - When you study the global history of Islam, what is the best indicator of how Muslim they really were? - Did colonialism trigger an Islamic backlash? - Why do Muslim countries often have weak state capacity? Timur Kuran blames waqfs. Do you agree? Happy Friday friends! I'm thrilled to begin our Encounter Series today! This summer we'll be focusing on stories of how a person encountered Christ, how they began living their life for Jesus, and what their life looks like now. Today I have the privilege of sitting down with JoAnn Doyle, author of Women Who Risk: Secret Agents for Jesus in the Muslim World.JoAnn was a pastor's wife for 20 years before God called her family into full-time mission work in the Middle East. Together, she and her husband Tom launched Uncharted Ministries, which sounds the alarm and inspires believers to join God's great harvest among Jews and Muslims. The women's ministry of Uncharted, called Not Forgotten, encourages and equips Jesus-followers to engage these often-neglected women with the love of Christ—not only across the globe, but in our own backyards.JoAnn share with us stories of former Muslim women who literally risked it all to follow Jesus. My heart was convicted as I listened to these stories of women who gave up everything and I look at my own life as a Christ-follower here in America. JoAnn gives all of us encouragement in how we can walk in holy boldness wherever we live!Don't forget to click here to subscribe to our newsletter and share this episode with a friend!SHOW LINKS:Women Who Risk by Tom Doyle & JoAnn DoyleUncharted MinistriesI Found The TruthNot Forgotten MinistriesDreams and Visions by Tom DoyleThe Return of the Gods by Jonathan Cahn
