Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez makes the outrageous claim that we were 60 seconds away from living in a martial state during the Capitol Hill unrest of January 6th. Geraldo Rivera begins spouting off Hamas talking points for some reason, and Katie Pavlich of Fox News calls him out and takes him to task.
While wealthy countries like the United States are rushing to vaccinate their populations and “reopen” their societies, the rest of the world continues to suffer. With hospitals overrun and life-saving oxygen supplies running low, India's government is reporting over 300,000 new COVID-19 infections every day (though evidence suggests the numbers are even higher). Meanwhile, Brazil suffered 70,000 COVID deaths in April alone, with poor and Black communities being hit the hardest, while a new, more contagious variant rips across the country. How have these preventable horrors come to pass? And what can we do to help?In this urgent episode of “The Marc Steiner Show,” spanning three continents, we bring you firsthand reports of the unfolding catastrophes in India and Brazil from guests who are living through them. Marc is joined by journalist and activist Ansab Amir, who is based in Aligarh, India, and multimedia journalist, radio reporter, documentary filmmaker, and TRNN contributor Mike Fox, who is based in Florianópolis, Brazil.Tune in for new episodes of The Marc Steiner Show every Tuesday on TRNN.

For close to a year, Talia Lavin went undercover in white supremacist online communities, creating fake personas that would gain her access to the dark reaches of the internet normally off-limits to her, a Jewish woman. That research laid the groundwork for her book, Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy. Lavin talks to It's Been A Minute host Sam Sanders about what it was like to infiltrate those online spaces, what she learned, and how white supremacy cannot exist without anti-Semitism.

There is so much to unpack in this current moment. Sam has a candid conversation with Aunt Betty about how history has shaped her view of the current protests, and he walks around downtown Los Angeles to get the perspective of people he meets. Sam also talks to BuzzFeed News reporter Melissa Segura on her recent reporting about police unions and what they mean for reform, and Morning Edition executive producer Kenya Young about being a black parent during this time and the 'talk' she has to give her sons.NPR has curated a podcast playlist to amplify conversations about law enforcement, racial injustice, and the black American experience. Nicholas Parsons - actor, comedian and long-time host of Radio 4's 'Just a Minute' - joins Jonathan Agnew for a View from the Boundary in 2007.
One could call it the ‘holy grail’ of today’s highly urbanized world. The way authorities manage it shapes the way we live, including how much public and green space we can benefit from, how we can move around, what types of services we can find around us and most importantly what kind of home we can access. Urban Land is a cornerstone of modern cities and today’s focus point of ‘Making a house a home’. In the third episode of our mini series dedicated to the ‘Housing 2030’ joint international initiative of Housing Europe, UN Habitat and UNECE around housing affordability, we’ll be looking at how one of the world’s major cities, namely Paris is dealing with the question of land and how this in effect influences the provision of social and affordable housing. To do that, we’re privileged to have the view of a true expert. Olivier Richard is Urban planner and Designer at APUR, the Paris Urbanism Agency, a private body that has accompanied public urban policy since 1967. Its mission is to document, analyse and develop forward looking strategies which address the urban and societal evolution of Paris and Greater Paris. Olivier Richard has been involved in the agency’s work for over 20 years and we contacted him to discuss the links between planning and housing, between land and affordability at a time that Paris seems to be undergoing a major transformation. What are the tools that the French capital is deploying to improve the provision of affordable homes? Where have the authorities been successful so far and what are the challenges ahead? And finally, where does housing fit into the much-discussed vision unveiled by Mayor Anne Hidalgo for the so-called ’15-minute city’? Olivier Richard has all the answers. Stay tuned…

Oh my gosh! Charlie Berens is the guest on this week's podcast. Last fall, the Los Angeles (by way of Elm Grove, Wisconsin) actor, writer, and Emmy-winning host first made his mark with viral voiceover videos imagining what it'd be like if Titanic's Jack Dawson and Bane from Batman hailed from Wisconsin. More recently, Berens rose to regional notoriety as the host of Manitowoc Minute. Through about 20 episodes, the weekly Wisconsin-influenced news segment has garnered millions of views on YouTube and Facebook. While back in his home state for a run of performances (including a pair of sell-out shows at Turner Hall), Berens met host Tyler Maas at the Cactus Club to discuss the origin of the character that's quickly struck a chord in his home state, his path to L.A., where he hopes to bring the segment, and the care he puts into the 90 seconds of northwoods-accented perspective he puts into the world each week. Before episode's end, Berens also makes a bold prediction about the Packers. If you like the Manitowoc Minute, you'll love the 50-some minutes we spent getting to know the man behind "The Minute."
