The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Shawano County; https://bit.ly/3X0MLBnCampfire Conversation: Eric and Ana tuck into the Cabin and prepare you for the wonders of Wisconsin comfort foods - those tasty treats and dishes that bring warmth and fill you up. They talk about the foods themselves like casseroles, pot pies, poutine, mac & cheese (lots of cheese), potato dishes, pasties, chili, and more. Shout-outs are given to some favorite spots for comfort foods around Wisconsin, including Monty's Blue Plate Diner in Madison and Delta Diner in the North Woods in Bayfield County (both for their meat loaf among other dishes!); places like Real Chili in Milwaukee for chili; Mac's and their multiple locations around Wisconsin for incredible mac & cheese combos; Shepherd's Pie from places like Kitty O'Reilly's in Sturgeon Bay, Stone Arch in Appleton, Dublin Square in La Crosse, O'Donoghue's in Elm Grove, or County Clare in Milwaukee; plus Italian pastas, Cornish pasties, plus some key burgers and pizza around the state get highlighted. Desserts are comfort food too, and places like Norske Nook, Honeypie, Hubbard Avenue Diner, and Stockholm Pie (among many others) are famous for pies - and that's just one dessert example. Wisconsin's bevy of supper clubs are great places for big meals involving our favorite comfort foods as a state, they are highly recommended for the full experience! All of that and more gets covered in this episode of The Cabin.Inside Sponsors:Menomonie Chamber: https://bit.ly/3q16T9YJefferson County: https://www.enjoyjeffersoncounty.com

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Feb. 12  Happy birthday! A Wheeling hair salon celebrates 40 years…a WV film company lands two more big projects from Lifetime cable network…#YesWV… and what's that sound? Could it be spring peepers coming soon to the wetlands of Almost Heaven…on today's daily304. #1 – From WTRF-TV Wheeling – Wheeling's history shines through the businesses that have stood the test of time, and for some – they never would have dreamed that they would see their success flourish into what it is today.  Frederick's Day Spa Salon recently celebrated its 40th birthday with balloons, cupcakes, and a fun '80s theme to take it back to where it all began. Fred DeChiazza was just 23 years old when he opened his first hair salon in Elm Grove, and later expanded to the former Zien's restaurant on Edgington Lane, where he has remained for 16 years. DeChiazza says that with the great help of his family and employees, he is confident that they are going to take Frederick's Day Spa Salon for another 40 years into the future. Check them out at www.fredericks-salon.com.  Read more: https://www.wtrf.com/wheeling/wheeling-salon-celebrates-40-years-of-business-in-the-ohio-valley/  #2 – From C21 MEDIA– It's good news for the West Virginia film industry as Lifetime cable network orders two more movies inspired by best-selling true crime author Ann Rule's books. “Desperate Hours” (working title) is adapted from Rule's “Last Dance, Last Chance” true crime collection. A+E Networks-owned Lifetime has also green-lighted “A Rose For Her Grave” (working title), which follows the crimes of real-life serial killer Randy Roth and the woman who finally brought him to justice. The movies are produced by West Virginia-based production company Allegheny Image Factory and Best On Best and will both debut in 2023 on Lifetime. Conor Allyn and Benjamin Anderson serve as writers/executive producers and Jeff Tinnell and Bob Tinell serve as producers for both films. The REAL harbinger of spring is the spring peeper. "If you're listening, it's the first frog you're going to hear in the spring," says Lauren Cole, the naturalist at Chief Logan State Park.  The tiny frogs typically begin their chorus in late February or early March when temperatures start to warm up. It's a welcome sound in the Appalachian Mountains and signals that spring is just around the corner. The conversation ranges from homespun stories of family on the road, to how pop culture was influenced by America's growing super highway infrastructure, as they talk about Rich's book, “Don't Make Me Pull Over: An informal history of the family road trip.” We release Encore Presentations to revisit special moments for listeners who may have limited access to our earlier episodes on their podcast channels. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Rich_Ratay_Final.mp3 This conversation takes a nostalgic look at the golden age of family road trips — part pop history, part humorous memoir not unlike National Lampoon's Vacation movies. This episode focuses on how the birth of America's interstate highways in the 1950s ushered in an era of unprecedented family travel. Over the next three decades, the number of vehicles on the road quintupled, national parks attendance grew to 165 million, and 2.2 million people visited Gettysburg each year — 13 times the number of soldiers who fought in the battle. Richard combines little-known historical stories and information, with amusing personal stories of family that takes us back to a time when the whole family piled into car for long hours of driving, car games, running on empty, and roadside attractions. Those relatively new roads we take for granted today changed the way America sees itself because it enabled millions to get out and see the country. In the 19th century, Wisconsin’s Territorial Legislature divided Milwaukee County into seven townships. Five of them eventually became municipalities: Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Greenfield, Franklin, and Oak Creek. But two of those original townships were absorbed by the city of Milwaukee and live on now only as neighborhood names: Lake and Granville. Last year Bubbler Talk explored the history of Lake . Now, we’ll travel to the northwest corner of Milwaukee County for Chapter 2: Granville. Terry Warner sent us the question that prompted this story. He grew up in Elm Grove, and remembers as a child in the 1950s and '60s, making the drive east to his grandmother in Bayside. “I just looked out the window — we didn’t have any entertainment,” Warner recalls. “The way you survived a road trip was you looked out the window and looked at things.” He remembers driving through the village of Granville on a regular basis. “Once you were north of Appleton Ave., you were in the country, you were really

The affable actor, writer, comedian and Emmy-winning host has made a name for himself throughout Wisconsin (and far beyond) with his "Manitowoc Minute" segments and other hilarious videos that are rooted in Midwest-themed humor. In addition to making content that has garnered millions of views, touring throughout Wisconsin and its neighboring states, starting a great new podcast called The CripesCast, and adapting his web-based material into a sidesplitting long-form theater show, Berens recently joined forces with Adam Greuel, of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, to release an album full of Wisconsin-centric bluegrass songs. A few weeks after the release of Berens & Greuel's debut album, Unthawed, Berens spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the album and its unique blend of local love, earnest bluegrass and well-crafted comedy. Over the course of the discussion, Berens also talked about his early musical attempts in the small Wisconsin town of Elm Grove, the development of Manitowoc Minute, the careful balance of humor and social commentary he tries to strike in his material, the process of writing and recording Unthawed, and spending a week in the top spot on the Billboard bluegrass charts (unseating Sturgill Simpson in the process). Before episode's end, Berens also dipped into Manitowoc Minute mode long enough to give some bold predictions for this weekend's Packers-Bears game. Kuchta, who served as Chief Financial Officer of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) from 2001 to 2010, died Tuesday in Elm Grove, Wisc. He was 78. Kuchta served three terms as the Synod’s CFO. At the 2004 LCMS convention, he was the only nominee to receive 100 percent of the vote — all 1,122 votes cast. Kuchta served on numerous Synod boards, including for Concordia Publishing House, Lutheran Church Extension Fund, the LCMS Foundation, the LCMS Board of Directors and Concordia Plan Services. Kuchta is survived by his wife, Ilona; two daughters, Michelle Kuchta and Stacey Setzer; two grandsons, Alexander and Broderick Setzer; and one brother, James Kuchta. Religious freedom is 'foremost' A draft report from an advisory body to the U.S. State Department on human rights says that religious freedom is “foremost” among human rights. The commission was established last July by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who announced that Mary Ann Glendon, former U.S. Ambassador to The Holy See, would lead it. Pompeo explained the need for the commission yesterday, noting that an increase in the number of recognized human rights presents “risks of collision” between rights claims, as well as “risks of trivializing core American values.” In his time at the state department, he said, as cables from around the world came in he realized officials were discussing rights in ways that were “deeply inconsistent.” Churches sue California's governor On Wednesday, three churches sued pro-abortion Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom for singling out houses of worship in his latest coronavirus restrictions, the Washington Examiner reports. The churches, Calvary Chapel of Ukiah, Calvary Chapel Fort Bragg and River of Life Church, said California leaders are unfairly targeting them by allowing massive protests to continue while heavily restricting religious worship. On July 1, the California Department of Public Health issued new guidelines outlining steps that houses of worship must take to help prevent further spread of the virus. One of those measures prohibits singing, even when people are social distancing and wearing masks. The state also limits indoor religious attendance to “25 percent of building capacity or a maximum of 100 attendees, whichever is lower.” According to the lawsuit, the churches could face fines, imprisonment or both if they violate Newsom’s mandate. City ends partnership with church Local government authorities ended a partnership with a Christian church in Alabama offering outreach programs at public housing communities after a senior pastor was criticized online for liking several conservative-based memes. The church also was banned from leasing public high schools for its worship services. According to a report by al.com, Senior Pastor Chris Hodges was first denounced by high school English teacher Jasmine Faith Clisby, who pointed out on Facebook that “Hodges, founder of the Church of the Highlands, repeatedly ‘liked’ social media posts by (Charlie) Kirk.” Kirk is the founder and president of Turning Point USA, a national student movement promoting the principles of free markets and limited government among young people.

Welcome to the Can't Make This Up. I'm your host Kevin. A family cruising across the country crammed together in a wood-paneled station wagon has become the cliche icon of the American road trip, but it was a reality for many families in the latter half of the 20th century. Interwoven into the history of the Great American Road Trip was the economic and population boom that followed the United States' victory in World War II, a massive infrastructure investment on the part of the federal government, and an interventionist American foreign policy in the 1960s and 1970s. The legacy of the road trip is a robust cultural history steeped in Americana and memories of a simpler, more family-oriented era. I'm joined on the podcast this week by Rich Ratay. Rich grew up in Wisconsin in the 1970s and remembers well his experiences during what he calls the "Golden Age of Road Tripping." His book, Don't Make Me Pull Over!: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip, weaves the history behind the nation's transportation network, today's speed-driven consumer culture, and the explosion of the amusement-tourism industry with his own humorous anecdotes of traveling cross-country with his family as a kid in the 70s. Rich was the last of four kids raised in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in journalism and has worked as an award-winning advertising copywriter for twenty-five years. Today, Rich continues the tradition of road tripping with his wife and their two sons. “Don't Make Me Pull Over!” is his debut book. Oh my gosh! Charlie Berens is the guest on this week's podcast. Last fall, the Los Angeles (by way of Elm Grove, Wisconsin) actor, writer, and Emmy-winning host first made his mark with viral voiceover videos imagining what it'd be like if Titanic's Jack Dawson and Bane from Batman hailed from Wisconsin. More recently, Berens rose to regional notoriety as the host of Manitowoc Minute. Through about 20 episodes, the weekly Wisconsin-influenced news segment has garnered millions of views on YouTube and Facebook. While back in his home state for a run of performances (including a pair of sell-out shows at Turner Hall), Berens met host Tyler Maas at the Cactus Club to discuss the origin of the character that's quickly struck a chord in his home state, his path to L.A., where he hopes to bring the segment, and the care he puts into the 90 seconds of northwoods-accented perspective he puts into the world each week. Before episode's end, Berens also makes a bold prediction about the Packers. If you like the Manitowoc Minute, you'll love the 50-some minutes we spent getting to know the man behind "The Minute."

"You wanted to know what I was going to do Thanksgiving. I am going to get my teeth fixed. I got one pulled. I only have two to fix." In his tenth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, writes that he still isn't sure if he'll get furlough a few days later for Thanksgiving (November 29 in 1917). If he doesn't make it home, he plans to get his teeth fixed for the holiday. He only has two to fix, he notes. He says that he and the men asked for a transfer to France and were told they would be there soon. As his brother-in-law Dutch Riggle mentioned in his letter of the previous day (see Podcast #13), Lester talks about the transfer of the infantry men, including Wheeling friend Walter Toland (W.T.). Lester doesn't miss Walter, but says Dutch seems happy. Lester also mentions the snow but disagrees with Dutch about how cold it is. Les still only needs a shirt. Lester promises to let Minnie know when he arrives at Elm Grove so she can meet him. Finally, as he so often does in his letters home, he mentions Cleo, a friend of his sister and a person of great importance to Lester. Stay tuned for more about the mysterious Cleo, who will have her own podcast in this series next spring. Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, where so many Wheeling soldiers were trained. And, like so many of his Ohio Valley comrades, he served in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. This is his tenth letter from Camp Lee, dated 100 years ago today, November 25, 1917. In his fifth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, discusses his first five weeks at Camp Lee. Topics include how much he enjoys driving mules (he's been given a steady job hauling supplies for $3 per month), how taking care of the mules reminds him of caring for his colts back home, an early snowfall in the Valley, Lester’s painful boxing match with Charles Lewis from Elm Grove, the postcards he sent home, and the “moving pictures” he’s looking forward to seeing. The letter is signed "Scotty."   Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, where so many Wheeling soldiers were trained.
