When A Hard Days Night exploded onto the scene in 1964, its charm and success was simply ripe for some good ol' fashioned bootlegging. What followed was half a decade of wannabe music movies – specifically, movies in which pop bands play themselves while still following a strictly scripted plot. Mainly these were vehicles for British boy bands, but eventually they started to extend over to the Americas – where they warped from wholesome to hippie. In this season finale, Bart and Jenna tackle several of these band movies head on – and with Head on. It's an episode full of high highs (marijuana and LSD) and low lows (Herman's Hermits and Freddie and the Dreamers), but quite frankly they're all a treat as its such a decade-specific genre. Get ready for a whole lot of restless youths, square plots, stoner humor, and screaming, adoring fans. The following films are discussed:• Ferry Cross the Mersey (1964) Directed by Jeremy Summers Starring Gerry & The Pacemakers, Mona Washbourne, Cilla Black• Having a Wild Weekend (1965) Catch Us If You Can Directed by John Boorman Starring The Dave Clark Five, Barbara Ferris, Yootha Joyce• Help! (1965) Directed by Richard Lester Starring The Beatles, Leo McKern, Eleanor Bron• Hold On! (1966) Directed by Arthur Lubin Starring Herman's Hermits, Shelley Fabares, Sue Ane Langdon• The Cuckoo Patrol (1967) Directed by Duncan Wood Starring Freddie & The Dreamers, Kenneth Connor, Victor Maddern• Good Times (1967) Directed by William Friedkin Starring Sonny & Cher, George Sanders, Norman Alden• Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter (1968) Directed by Saul Swimmer Starring Herman's Hermits, Sheila White, Sarah Caldwell• Head (1968) Directed by Bob Rafelson Starring The Monkees, Victor Mature, Annette FunicelloAlso mentioned:• The Ghost Goes Gear (1966) Directed by Hugh Gladwish Starring The Spencer Davis Group, Nicholas Parsons, Sheila White• Los chicos con las chicas (1967) Directed by Javier Aguirre Starring Los Bravos, Enriqueta Carballeira, Manolo Gómez Bur• Dame un poco de amooor...! Hello there, and welcome to A Brit talks Vintage TV, with me Jamie Dyer. 2021 marked the 85th anniversary of the birth of the man known as 'The Big O' and I can't get enough of him. Last year, my family and I spent a week in a static caravan. This was due to electrical works that were to take place at our property. While wondering what to do with ourselves, we turned on a documentary about the late, great Roy Orbison., I reviewed a new vinyl collection of Sun Records-era Orbison, collated by Bear Family Records. Little did I know that this review would set me up for a viewing of a famous Roy Orbison concert entitled Black And White Night. To say it was strange to see a performance recorded in the 1980s in old-fashioned monochrome is an understatement. However, it suited the intended mood perfectly. I am not sure that, when the pioneers of television were first laying down their television pictures in glorious 405-line, they would have considered it a stylistic choice when colour had long been the standard. Although, saying that, they may have appreciated it has its merits when compared to colour. In a similar train of thought, I wonder what they would have thought of colourisation; The process of taking something originally made in black and white and...well you know the rest. The concept of colourising black and white media has always been something that divides fans. However, it has come a long way since the likes of Ted Turner began colouring in old movies to show on TV. Utilizing computer software and a bit of manual quality control can produce pretty decent results. We saw it a few years back when CBS showed colourised episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy. While Black and White grounded them in the past, colour made them seem new again. The same can be said for the work on Network's latest release, Presented in SuperColorisation. A selection of six episodes from Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation series originally made in black and white, restored and colourised in high definition. The three series featured on the set are: One episode of Four Feather Falls, a western series starring the voices of Nicholas Parsons and Kenneth Connor. Two episodes of Supercar: A visually impressive yet strange series about a flying and swimming supercar, its driver, a professor, a child and a monkey. It's pretty funny too. And three episodes of Fireball XL5: A show my son thought was Supercar, but wasn't. I'm not as familiar with this show, but I do know it has a following. So what about the quality of the colourisation? How is it? To be completely honest with you...it's marvellous. The amount of detail in the work makes Anderson's magnificent stunt execution even more breathtaking. Explosions, water, falling rocks and so much more, are even more impressive. Narratively the inclusion of colour changes the mood somewhat, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Now do I think everything should be colourised? No. There are just some things that work best in their intended medium. The moody look of monochrome suits the vibe. Colourise it and you change that. People sometimes have an issue with the effect that colourisation has on the product. The Anderson set, for example, has instances where strings and other limitations are much more visible in colour due to the change in contrast to achieve the desired effect. Aside from Four Feather Falls, which I think suits black and white best, the shows have a whole new life ahead of them in colour. Presented in Supercolorisation is available to pre-order from NetworkOnAir.com, and will be released on the 12th of December 2022. Roy Orbison's Black and White Night can be found either on BBC4 or Sky Arts.

In this episode, I talk to the fantastic comedian RICHARD MORTON about his comedy career. Geordie comedian Richard Morton combines music and comedy to create a unique comic act.  With hilarious comedy songs and stand-up, the energetic funny man has forged an impressive status as a live act, and supported many great comedians on tour including Lee Evans, Jack Dee, Jo Brand, Phill Jupitus and Eddie Izzard.  In a long and established career, Morton had performed several sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and other festivals, has regularly appeared on TV and radio, was one half of the musical duo The Panic Brothers (with Reg Meuross) before turning solo, and is a founder member of London's legendary Comedy Store's Cutting Edge show. Morton is determined to make an audience laugh, is extremely likeable and highly recommended. I have seen Morton perform many times over the years including The Comedy Store in 1988, supporting Jack Dee on tour in 1999, performing as one half of The Panic Brothers for Nicholas Parsons' Happy Hour at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 and at Headliners Comedy Club in 2016. Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. It starred Kenneth Horne and Richard Murdoch as senior staff in a fictional RAF station battling red tape and wartime inconvenience. Over the years the station turned to non-combatant operations, became a country club and finally a newspaper, The Weekly Bind. The programme's title may have been inspired by the RAF station at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, along with the word "binding", period RAF slang for difficulties or problems accompanied by whining or complaining. One of the most fondly remembered parts of the show was the closing theme tune, with topical lyrics each week referring to the plot of the episode, written and sung by members of the cast. Richard’s guest is the showbiz legend, 75 years in the business and no sign of stopping yet, Nicholas Parsons. Also working with Rik and Ade on the Comic Strip and how the show must go on even after a blow to the head. We’re talking about and playing a top twenty from January 1957. It’s just as if I was presenting Top of the Pops, but with more mentions of Nicholas Parsons. The other thing is that from now on, I’m going to be doing ten-minute Patreon-only episodes every week. This week’s is about a song by the Clovers, about which we know very little, and whose name I can’t mention if I want to keep my iTunes clean rating, so let’s just say that it fits rather well with the topic of our main podcast tonight. Almost a forgotten figure in British comedy, Arthur Haynes (born in London in May 1914) was ITV's biggest star of the late 1950s through to the mid-1960s; indeed, he was the first star to be produced by the new independent channel. As with many artists of the post-war generation, Haynes gained a foothold in variety through the armed forces entertainment units during World War Two. While serving in the Royal Engineers, he was recruited for the concert party troupe Stars in Battledress. It was here that he met the already established entertainer Charlie Chester. Following the war, Haynes remained with Chester, appearing in the BBC radio show Stand Easy (1946-49), but he harboured ambitions for solo success and eventually went his own way. The separation, however, did not prevent Haynes appearing in The Charlie Chester Show on both television (BBC, tx. 12/1/1949) and radio (4/1/1955) . Haynes struggled for a number of years trying to perfect his stage act, until a major television break finally came his way with the George and Alfred Black variety show for ITV, Strike a New Note (1956). Haynes began as just one among many on the bill, but such was his success with viewers, particularly with his character Oscar Pennyfeather, that he was soon headlining the show, now renamed Get Happy. The Arthur Haynes Show (ITV, 1957-66) followed, a mixture of comedy sketches (largely scripted by Johnny Speight, who had first worked with Haynes on Get Happy) and musical interludes with guest artistes. Haynes was noted for the unusual aggressiveness and belligerence of his comic characters, and for the emphasis on the class war in his sketches (Speight's influence was at its strongest here). These qualities were seen at their best in his most popular character, a bemedalled tramp, forever railing against society - particularly upper-class society - invariably in the form of his near-constant foil, Nicholas Parsons (another survivor from the Get Happy days). Running to fifteen series, the shows were enormously successful, making Haynes one of the highest paid artists in variety, and winning him the Variety Club Award as ITV Personality of 1961. The same year he appeared on The Royal Variety Performance, (ITV, tx. 12/11/1961). The Arthur Haynes Show was also adapted for radio by Johnny Speight (BBC, 1962-65). Haynes had a small role in the Rock Hudson/Gina Lollobrigida comedy Strange Bedfellows (US, 1965; filmed in London), and a larger one as an argumentative (what else?) patient in the comedy Doctor in Clover (d. Ralph Thomas, 1966). Haynes had recently returned from America, where he had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, and was set to commence shooting on his sixteenth ITV television series, when he was struck down at the age of 52 by a heart attack. He died on 19 November 1966.

The series that looks at current events through the lens of psychology - Michael Blastland explores the quirky ways in which we humans think, behave and make decisions. In this episode - disruption and how it affects us. Cancelled trains or political and economic turmoil - when things happen beyond our control, how do we react psychologically? Not well, usually. We don't like uncertainty. We tend to avoid a change to the status quo, almost at all cost. But are there cases when a bit of disruption has benefits? The Human Zoo team explores everything from displaced German towns and lateral problem-solving to comedy improvisation and music composition. Michael Blastland is joined by resident Zoo psychologist Nick Chater, Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, and roving reporter Timandra Harkness. Contributors this week include behavioural scientist Dr Stian Reimers, City University London; broadcaster Nicholas Parsons; psychologist Prof Thomas Ormerod; members of Spontaneity Shop, comedy improvisation company; and broadcaster and journalist, Tim Harford. Producer: Dom Byrne A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.

Do you remember when Non-Intern Simon had a Wii? And can you remember the ultimate fate of that Wii? Non-Intern Simon doesn't which is why he has now bought a Wii U. Betting is now open for how long that Wii U will be actively used for. The winner will get the chance to throw a sack containing bricks, a Wii U controller (that Ann says is rather nice to touch) and some other 'items' into the canal. This week's Super-Special Guest was the Bionic Man Luke Williams from Bossa Studios (he has had laser eye surgery). He was on the show to talk about his new game I Am Bread and how it is similar to Kim Kardashian's butt. This then caused Ste to get rather existential about raw toast and how it fits in with the world. We found out that I Am Bread was first made during a game jam at Bossa Studios so it could be called a jam sandwich (if you're prepared to give us the benefit of the doubt like Nicholas Parsons on Just A Minute). It's on Steam Early Access now and should be finished early next year. We heard from Sega Badawi and Simon The Intern caught us up with all the gaming news that Ann missed off because she couldn't connect it to Taylor Swift. And we had the welcome return of our Top Five feature, but it might not be so welcome after all the puns Ste made. Sorry. We also learned that Non-Intern Simon scared Ann at night, what magazines Luke used to read in the old days and that Ste has trouble throwing his Vita. Cheerio!
