In 1897, Gustav Klimt led a group of radical artists to break free from the cultural establishment of Vienna and found a movement that became known as the Vienna Secession. In the vibrant atmosphere of coffee houses, Freudian psychoanalysis and the music of Wagner and Mahler, the Secession sought to bring together fine art and music with applied arts such as architecture and design. The movement was characterized by Klimt's stylised paintings, richly decorated with gold leaf, and the art nouveau buildings that began to appear in the city, most notably the Secession Building, which housed influential exhibitions of avant-garde art and was a prototype of the modern art gallery. The Secessionists themselves were pioneers in their philosophy and way of life, aiming to immerse audiences in unified artistic experiences that brought together visual arts, design, and architecture. In our previous episode, we explored what makes a board game a true masterpiece—a creation that showcases a designer's greatest achievement, marked by exceptional craftsmanship, originality, and lasting impact. This time, we're taking the conversation even deeper. In Masterpieces 2, the Founders shift the spotlight to the brilliant minds behind the games themselves. We'll be celebrating the visionary game designers whose work has shaped the hobby - and welcoming four Honorary Founders as guest hosts, each presenting their favorite designer and the game they consider to be that designer's crowning achievement.
Rock Masterpieces You Really Should Know About Ferris Kennedy and Dr. Clarke stand toe to toe, each declaring why his personal selection of rock masterpieces is defensible, immutable, and not to be trifled with. This episode saves you time by explaining, with passion and insight, why a particular album shall not and will not be ignored—and perhaps should be in your collection.
Welcome to the first episode in the Masterpieces series! In this series, I‘ll be telling you the stories of those games, that became part of the AoE II history. There‘s hundreds of famous and less famous storys to be told, but I'd like to start with a game that was recently played in Warlords 4, on the first day of the group stage in the match between Barles and Hera. Barles showcased a brand new strategy with an almost brand new civilization and I was deeply impressed by his performance throughout the whole tournament. I'd also like to thank Barles for providing me with a few insights by answering a couple of my questions. Please enjoy this episode about a one of a kind tower creep with fire lancers! Masterpieces like San Carlo alle Quattro Fontana and Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza have long entered the canon of architectural history. This master builder, pioneer of the graphite revolution in draftsmanship, was both a connoisseur of history and an apostle of inventiveness. You might encounter an ice sculpture of a swan at a fancy banquet, or an ice luge on a night out. But have you ever seen an 18-foot-tall punk baby with a mohawk made of ice? That’s one of the massive ice sculptures dreamt up by world-class ice carver Chris Foltz. Every winter, master sculptors from across the globe converge for the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, where the temps are sub-zero, the ice blocks are sawed out of frozen ponds and the sculptures can weigh up to 20 tons. Foltz, a longtime chef who teaches ice sculpting to culinary students on the Oregon coast, has led teams to multiple world championships in Alaska. “Oregon Field Guide” producer Noah Thomas followed Foltz and his team from Oregon to Fairbanks and joins us to share the thrills and chills of their quest for icy glory.
