In this episode of the Urban Exchange Podcast, hosts Lauren Sorkin and Paul Wilson dive deep into the critical issue of extreme heat with Lenio Myrivili, Global Chief Heat Officer for UN-Habitat and the Atlantic Council. The conversation explores how rising temperatures are transforming urban experiences across the globe, from Athens to London, and the profound challenges cities face in managing increasingly intense heat waves. Myrivili shares her journey from being Athens' Chief Resilience Officer to her current global role, highlighting the dramatic transformation of urban heat challenges over the past decade. She reveals shocking statistics about global temperatures, including how 70 large cities already experience over 150 days per year of temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. The podcast also delves into the physiological impacts of extreme heat, explaining how prolonged high temperatures can cause significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Myrivili emphasises that heat's impact is deeply localised, making it challenging to create universal measurement standards. A key theme is the importance of nature-based solutions, particularly urban trees and green spaces, which can help mitigate heat island effects. The discussion also touches on technological approaches like digital twins, with Myrivili advocating for focused, practical applications rather than comprehensive data collection. The episode highlights the growing recognition of cities' roles in addressing climate challenges, with urban leaders increasingly gaining platforms to share their experiences and solutions at global forums. Tune in for a sobering yet hopeful conversation, and understand how cities are confronting one of the most pressing climate challenges of our time, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in urban resilience and climate adaptation.

Le cylindre O'Neill est une structure conceptuelle d'habitat spatial proposée par le physicien Gerard K. O'Neill en 1978, dans son ouvrage The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space. Are you interested in how to manage multiple disasters at once? Summary of the article titled Misfortunes never come singly. A holistic approach to urban resilience and sustainability challenges from 2023 by Cristina Serbanica and Daniela Luminita Constantin, published in the Cities journal. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Keygan Huckleberry in episode 282 talking about disaster management and resilience. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see the connection between urban resilience and sustainability. This article highlights the interplay between acute shocks, long-term stresses, and their implications for urban safety and inclusiveness. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Global urban agendas must be adaptable to regional challenges, as different cities face varied combinations of shocks and stresses. Urban resilience focuses on immediate responses to shocks, while sustainability prioritizes long-term well-being and equity. The concepts of resilience and sustainability overlap in areas like safety and inclusiveness, which are crucial for resilient, sustainable cities. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: The United Nations' World Cities Report 2020 predicts that the world will continue to urbanize over the next decades, despite the pandemic experience, whose impact on urbanization trends is not clear at this point in time. By 2070, almost 60 % of the world population is projected to live in urban areas and be exposed to both chronic and emerging urban challenges (UN Habitat, 2022). Within this framework, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” appears as one of the most prominent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UNGA, 2015). The New Urban Agenda builds on the SDG 11 and affirms the global commitment to support the sustainable and resilient urban development (UNGA, 2017). At the same time, fostering resilient cities and investing in urban resilience remains high on the agenda of international organizations and global governance networks such as the UN Habitat (e.g. “City Resilience Profiling Programme”), the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (e.g. “Making Cities Resilient” campaigns), the World Bank (e.g. “Cities Resilience Programme”), the OECD (e.g. “Resilient cities”), ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (e.g. the “Resilient Cities” Programme), Cities Alliance (e.g. “Joint Work Programme on Resilient Cities”), ARUP and the Rockefeller Foundation (e.g. The 100 Resilient Cities (100 RC) Programme, City Resilience Index) etc. In the wake of Covid 19 pandemic, there is a growing consensus that cities offer unique opportunities to enhance resilience to the effects of pandemic, but also to achieving sustainable development (UN Habitat, 2021). According to UN-Habitat, a global housing affordability crisis is underway, with 1.6 billion people currently in need of adequate, affordable homes. That number could rise to three billion in just a few years. Home prices in urban markets have reached "impossible" levels of unaffordability while temperatures continue to rise as a result of climate change. On this third episode of the Mongabay Explores podcast season on the circular economy — the effort to design goods to be less resource-intensive, from their manufacture to disposal and recycling — Louise Dorignon, a postdoctoral research fellow and housing circularity expert at RMIT University in Melbourne, details this housing reform plan to address sustainability in the most unaffordable housing market in the English-speaking world: Australia. Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne have devised a framework for combatting this housing shortage, improving housing circularity, and reducing emissions from construction to help alleviate the housing sector's contributions to climate change. "Our goal was to find out how implementing a circular economy approach can lead to a more sustainable housing system. And we didn't want to juxtapose sustainability and circular economy as two different things. But instead, we wanted to see how they work together," Dorignon says. Last month was the hottest June ever experienced in Athens, at least since records began over 150 years ago. In fact, eight of the hottest 10 Junes ever recorded in Athens were during the last 20 years and four of those were in the last decade alone. This is having clear consequences for the city and its inhabitants, as rising temperatures and protracted heatwaves, beyond impacting daily life, also pose a number of health risks. Eleni Myrivili, the UN Chief Heat Officer working with UN-Habitat and the Arsht Rock Resilience Center at the Atlantic Council and the former Chief Resilience Officer and deputy mayor for Athens, joins Thanos Davelis to break down the challenges Athens is up against, explore the efforts to build urban heat resilience, and look at whether Athens can serve as an example to other cities. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Athens sizzles with hottest June on recordBuilding Urban Heat Resilience: The Athens Case StudyHellenic Air Force receives 20th upgraded F-16 ViperSyrians attack Turkish troops after anti-migrant riotsProtests and arrests as anti-Syrian riots rock TurkeyWith Fists and Knives, Mobs Attack Syrian Refugees in Turkey

According to the United Nations Population Fund's 2009 report, 2008 was the first time in history that over 50 percent of the world's population resided in cities instead of rural areas. Because of the different ways countries define cities, others date the qualitative shift to as recently as 2021. Regardless, across the spectrum it's undisputed we now live in an “urban age” and, as such, transforming the relationship between cities and the natural world is essential for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The international capitalist institutions like the World Bank that are increasingly taking up the issue of cities and climate change can't explain the various factors behind urbanization nor can they pose real solutions to its impact on or relationship to climate catastrophes. Cities consume 78 percent of the world's energy resources and produce 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2022 UN Habitat report. Under the capitalist model, urban planning lacks a holistic approach, leaving human well being and ecological needs as an afterthought, which will continue to have a degenerative effect on the environment and global climate. Marx and Engels lived during a time in which capitalist urbanization was a nascent phenomenon concentrated mostly in some European cities, like Manchester, the English city about which Friedrich Engels wrote his first and classic book, The Condition of the Working Class in England. Engels demonstrates how the “great town” of Manchester, the first major manufacturing center in England, was great only for capitalist profits. The concentration of capital required for the invention and adoption of machinery outproduced independent handicraft and agricultural production, forcing both into the industrial proletariat of the city. There, they had to work for the capitalists, whose wages were so low they could, if they were lucky, live in overcrowded houses and neighborhoods just outside the city limits. Because the city was produced chaotically for capitalist profits, no attention was given to accompanying environmental impacts. As the masses were driven from their land into the urban factories, the ancestral ties to the land and ecological knowledge of how to live sustainably on that land was lost. Heatwaves are growing in frequency and intensity around the world due to climate change. Extreme heat is now gripping three continents - Europe, the US and Asia - and there is more to come. Temperatures are breaking records, driving wildfires and prompting serious health warnings and evacuations. Europe may see its hottest week ever. Islands off the South of Italy - Sicily and Sardinia - recorded temperatures of 48 degrees Celsius according to the European Space Agency and at least 2,000 people have been evacuated due to wildfires on the Spanish island of La Palma. In the US, a third of Americans are under extreme heat advisories. Japan has issued heatstroke warnings for millions. Meanwhile South Korea's president has vowed to “completely overhaul” the country's approach to extreme weather from climate change as at least 40 people die from flooding and landslides. So, what does extreme heat do to our bodies? How can countries and people adapt now - and in the future - to better deal with a hotter world? And are governments doing enough to deal with the effects of global warming and, if not, what more needs to be done?
