Grab your fava beans and your garrote piano wire as NostalgiaCast takes a deep-dive into Martin Scorsese's CAPE FEAR and Jonathan Demme's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, two killer thrillers from two American masters not typically known for their horror chops. Jason of The Slashers and Binge Movies podcasts joins us to discuss the terror, torture, uncompromising head games, and oppressive existential dread that defines not just these two box office behemoths but also the current state of film criticism today. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes frank discussions of violence and sexual abuse as associated with the horror genre.
You thought I was done with this topic, didn't you? Well, I did some sleuthing and found a few more 80s shows that became short lived, unbelievably bad television shows. And unbelievably bad television shows is kind of my thing! We're gonna chat about Richard Pryor's Bustin' Loose which did not turn out to be a DYN-O-MITE series. I'll also enlighten you regarding Down and Out in Beverly Hills, The Four Seasons, and Nothing in Common. Along the way we'll touch on Nick Nolte's mugshot, my time with Jonah Hill, EGOTs, and a ton of Garry Marshall chit chat. It's a somewhat decent episode, I must say.

Kevin Stoller is joined by longtime educator and podcast host Steve Miletto to unpack the 1984 film Teachers, a gritty dramedy that offers an unflinching critique of the American public school system. Directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Nick Nolte, Teachers dives headfirst into the dysfunction, bureaucracy, and burnout often hidden behind school walls. Set in a troubled urban high school, the story centers on idealistic teacher Alex Jurel, who's caught between his desire to make a difference and a system that seems determined to maintain the status quo. With subplots involving a mentally ill teacher who was never removed, a student lawsuit, and apathetic staff, the movie blurs the line between satire and sobering reality. Kevin and Steve discuss how many of the themes from Teachers—such as disengaged leadership, systemic failure, and student disillusionment—still resonate in today's schools. Their conversation explores what's changed (and what hasn't) in the decades since the film's release, the importance of strong school culture, and how educators can lead with purpose in the face of institutional challenges. It's a raw and honest discussion about the role of teachers, the need for systemic change, and the heart it takes to truly connect with students. Takeaways: Teachers (1984) offers a satirical yet sobering critique of the American public school system, many of which still resonate today. The character of Alex Jurel represents the struggle of passionate educators trying to make a difference within a broken system. The episode explores how authentic relationships and emotional intelligence are still the most powerful tools educators have. The discussion underscores the mental health toll on both students and teachers in rigid, outdated school environments. Despite the challenges, the film and the conversation both reinforce why committed, caring educators matter more than ever. About Steve Miletto: Steven Miletto, EdD has been an educator in Georgia(US) for 38 years. He has served public school families as a history teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, and RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) Executive Director in the Heart of Georgia RESA (8 years) and now with North Georgia RESA (3years). Brandon Eric Kamin and Christian Crosby pull up to Q102/iHeartRadio Philadelphia the week before "The Golden Voice" hits theaters. Eric discusses what it was like making a movie with Nick Nolte as a young filmmaker from the Philly area. Fan favorite Hard Mike returns to the show alongside newcomer Syd Bricks to discuss Paul Schrader's Affliction, one of the filmmaker's most well-observed explorations of addiction and the generational cycles of suffering that manifest as a result of leaving personal trauma and pain unresolved. The film follows Nick Nolte's Wade Whitehouse, an alcohlic, washed-up cop in a small New Hampshire town whose maladies put him at odds with his community as he circles the drain, falling deeper into his own delusions of murder, conspiracy, and betrayal. The film also stars a monstrous James Coburn as the Whitehouse patriarch, in a role that would earn him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Together, we discuss our personal experiences with alcoholism and why the film is one of the very best about the subject in its dizzying, unmooring evocation of being caught in the chaos of addiction, both as the afflicted and as someone who loves them. Then we discuss the film's novel use of the neo-noir format as a subversive element of narrative to capture us in the dragnet of delusion meticulously architected by the film's unreliable protagonist. Finally, we praise the exemplary work of the film's cast, especially Nolte and Coburn, and how their screen personas function perfectly as characters filled with unmanageable woe, malice, and hurt. The latest Past Our Prime podcast takes us to the heartland and the beginning of the changing of the guard in college basketball. 1975 would be the last season for John Wooden and his UCLA dominance, and the Indiana Hoosiers were set to claim their spot atop the college basketball world. They would go 31-1 in '75 and follow that up in 1976 with a perfect 32-0 and the first National Championship for Bobby Knight. In 1975, the Hoosiers had 4 All Big-10 players in Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and Steve Green... and yet on the cover of that February 3rd issue 50 years ago was none other than John Laskowski... The Super Sub. The senior guard from South Bend was the first guy off the bench for Coach Knight and a main reason for the teams success. Half a century later, he still can't believe he was the guy on the cover of SI. But Laskowski was emblematic of what his coach was preaching. A team-first attitude where you left your ego at the door and went to work doing whatever was needed to win. And they won a lot... 37 consecutive Big-10 wins in fact, still the most ever in conference play... by a large margin. Laskowski went on to play in the NBA, and then was an analyst for Hoosiers basketball for years and he says much of that is because of the legendary Knight. Much more than just a coach to Laskowski, Bobby Knight was a mentor and an impactful man for the rest of his life until his death in 2023. He negotiated Laskowski's NBA deal with the Bulls, helped him get his TV job for IU and got him into the movie Blue Chips starring Nick Nolte. Laz tells us about a side of The General we rarely saw... He tells us about an assistant on that team that went on to become the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history... and he tells us about how Notre Dame rescinded their scholarship offer to him and how devastating that was to him before it turned into a blessing of a lifetime. It's a great talk with a great guy that was the first one off the bench for Coach Knight and on the cover of SI in 50 years ago today but in the POP starting lineup. Martin Scorsese went full Hitchcock for the remake of the thriller, Cape Fear. Extreme closeups, ominous music, and unusual camera angles pulled the director into new waters back in 1991. And, much like DeNiro's Max Cady to a human cheek, audiences ate it up. But now, decades later, was this dark tale worth retelling? Did Nick Nolte's evidence-hiding lawyer deserve this torture? And does the film's bonkers "houseboat of horrors" final act sink this sick flick or elevate it to iconic status? The Old Roommates close all the blinds (a few times) and revisit it all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. MERRY SHAQMAS, EVERYONE! We hit pause on DePalmber: Part De this week and pick up our annual Christmas tradition of exploring the filmography of basketball player / actor Shaquille O'Neal, here making his acting debut in a Nick Nolte-helmed character drama loosely based on notorious college coach Bobby Knight. It's 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Nolte, Shaq, Mary McDonnell, Ed O'Neill, J.T. Walsh, Alfre Woodard, Penny Hardaway, Anthony C. Hall and Bobby Knight. This was Friedkin's return to the fold after 20 years of banishment at Paramount, following a serious falling out with the studio during the production of (previous episode fodder) Sorcerer, and while the movie is far more of a one-for-us more so than a one-for-you, the prolific director still brings so much more life to the sports drama genre than this sort of thing is typically infused with. Plus, contrary to what we were led to believe from watching Steel last year, Shaq actually can act, and shows star-quality comedy chops and an earnest vulnerability that he would snuff out in later years while leaning into cartoon shtick. Sadly, Blue Chips is not available to stream on Paramount+, or anywhere for that matter, but can be rented for about $5 on YouTube. And it's worth checking out! Other works discussed on this episode include The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Kraven The Hunter, The Producers (2005), The Producers (1967), Young Frankenstein, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Scrooged, Office Christmas Party, It's In the Game: Madden NFL, Ready or Not, Bad Boys: Ride of Die, V/H/S, Hustle and Civil War. We'll be back next week to close out 2024 with our DePalmber: Part De canon consideration, as we put De Palma's 1981 show biz crime thriller under the microscope and finally dedicate an entire episode to John Travolta and Nancy Allen in Blow Out! Blow Out is currently streaming for free (in Canada at least) on the people's streamer, Tubi. Until then, we'll see you at the movies, and a happy Shaqmas to all!!
This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!

Is negotiation a foreign concept in the MSW world? How many times can one say, 'Ark Of Steel'? What can our attraction to Nick Nolte tell us about ourselves? Will a 'Ready For Shreddy' ever show up in our offices? And when are we going to get to the Slayer episode of MSW?
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy, and Dana discuss the 1984 educational film, Teachers. Honestly, if you have any aspirations to be a teacher, watch this movie. You will change your profession in a minute. Nick Nolte is the "cool" teacher, getting kids abortions (this movie should have come out in 1982), Mauser from Police Academy is the "hot" gym teacher, causing the need for the abortions, and Richard Mulligan is some crazy person off the street, who just happens to be the best teacher in the bunch. Plus the Karate Kid, George McFly and Dr. Sattler are the students in this all star cast. Anyway, enjoy the podcast, and get ready for a very, VERY special episode this Friday

25 years after its initial release, Kurt Vonnegut's biting portrayal of America's mad chaos, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS returns in a restored 4K version, the perfect film for our complicated times. Directed by Alan Rudolph, and starring Bruce Willis, Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Glenne Headly, Barbara Hershey, Omar Epps, Luka Haas and many more, the incisive comedy has been overlooked for far too long. And, in conjunction with the comedy's 25th Anniversary, there's no better time to rediscover Rudolph's unique cinematic vision and the timeless relevance of Vonnegut's work in a pristine restoration ready to provoke thought and captivate audiences all over again. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS tells the story of car dealership titan Dwayne Hoover (Bruce Willis), the most respected man in Midland City. His smiling face appears on every local channel and billboard - a shining symbol of the American success syndrome. His message is "You Can Trust Dwayne Hoover." And so they do. But Dwayne Hoover is not smiling inside. Nor can he be trusted. Dwayne's shady prosperity, picture-frame family, and small mind are cracking. His television commercial-addicted wife (Barbara Hershey) may or may not be physically present when he's with her. His son (Lukas Haas) resides in a bomb shelter aspiring to be a lounge singer. His paranoid sales manager (Nick Nolte) has a significant sex secret. A Dwayne Hoover worshipper (Omar Epps) has taken up residence on his car lot. And his adulating secretary/lover (Glenne Headly) wonders if Dwayne Hoover has changed. The reeling business titan needs to find something or someone immediately to tell him the truth, to guide him out of this punishing, yet well-deserved, self-doubt. Simultaneous to Dwayne expanding breakdown, an impoverished and nonsensical science fiction writer, Kilgore Trout (Albert Finney), is making his way to Midland City's Fine Arts Festival, hailed as the world's greatest author by Midland City's wealthiest cultural leader. Once Hoover discovers Trout's impending arrival, he is maniacally determined to meet the author and receive the message that will restore his confidence and well-being. But when their orbits finally collide, neither Dwayne Hoover, Kilgore Trout, nor Midland City is prepared for the inexplicable and volatile results.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Eight movie reviews today, Punch it. Body blow body blow. #1(Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971)As always for me, this one looks so very much better than it is. Don't get me wrong it's got murder she wrote and Witches, but it still puts me to sleep in the middle sadly. #2(Death takes a holiday 1971) Gee whiz V did not love the dialogue here, not wrong, yet for me it kinda added to the oddness of the whole twilight zone package. At least Brad Pitt is not doing a terribly racist accent in this adaptation of the timeless tale where the grim reaper takes some time off to see what love is, oh the back log. #3 (The autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman 1974) Great movie where Cicely Tyson takes us from slavery to the civil rights movement when she is put into what I can only describe as “really bad makeup” Great director here is John Korty who directed Star Wars……..The Ewok Adventure in 84. #4(1900 1976) Omg this movie! It is long, intense, great, and unwatchable at times, unless you like real onscreen animal torture, we'll get into it. French guy from Green Card is here as well as Taxi Driver, Dominique Sanda (Janice from Damnation alley), and the sacred fluids guy from Dr. Strangelove Sterling Hayden. #5 (Tracks 1976) The movie where Dennis Hopper kisses weird. Hopper and the guy from quantum leap are on a train, (Cylon Q leap guy, not Enterprise captain one)Rad N trippy director here is Henry Jaglom. #6 (The getting of Wisdom 1977) Early film from director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Breaker Morrant, Driving Miss Daisy) Here we have too much mean sass at this school. It's a coming of age type thing that introduces Austrian Hero Laura Tweedle, played here by Susannah Fowle. #7 (Patrick 1978) Freaky Telekinesis patient is totally brain dead, but he spits. Susan Penhaligon plays Kathy who scores a weird job in this movie that the internet told me was an underrated classic, it is not. #8 (Who'll stop the Rain 1978) Nick Nolte is back from Nam, and he has to help his buddy who doesn't know shit about smuggling drugs. Tuesday Weld plays Marge who is caught in the middle. Is this movie good? Find out with us. Thanks for listening.

When it comes to biting satire and outrageous humour, Tropic Thunder remains a standout in the annals of Hollywood comedies. Released in 2008, this film, directed by Ben Stiller, is a unique blend of action, absurdity, and razor-sharp commentary on the entertainment industry itself. In this Tropic Thunder Movie Review, we dive deep into the film's multilayered humour, its over-the-top performances, and the controversies that have kept it relevant long after its initial release.Plot Breakdown and SetupTropic Thunder follows the chaotic production of a Vietnam War film that spirals out of control when its pampered, clueless actors are dropped into the jungle for some “method” filmmaking. What starts as a fictional movie quickly devolves into real-life danger, though the cast has no idea they are no longer pretending. The plot is as meta as it gets—a movie about making a movie, where the line between fiction and reality is hilariously blurred.Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a fading action star desperately seeking credibility by taking on a “serious” role in a war drama. His co-stars include Kirk Lazarus (played by Robert Downey Jr.), a multiple Oscar-winning actor who undergoes a controversial pigment alteration surgery to play a Black soldier, and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), a drug-addicted comedian known for his gross-out humour. Alongside them are Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), the earnest newbie, and Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), a rapper-turned-actor trying to maintain his street cred. As the film's director loses control, the actors must survive real threats in the jungle, thinking it's all part of the shoot.A Satirical Punch to Hollywood's EgoAt its core, Tropic Thunder is an unflinching satire of Hollywood excess, egotism, and the absurd lengths actors go to in search of acclaim. The film skewers method acting, self-important stars, and the exploitative nature of the movie business. Ben Stiller, who not only stars but directs, doesn't shy away from poking fun at the very industry that made him famous.Stiller's Tugg Speedman embodies the desperation of actors clinging to their fading stardom. His previous attempts to earn respect as a serious actor—most notably in the disastrous Simple Jack, where he plays a mentally disabled man—are a clear jab at how Hollywood sometimes exploits sensitive topics for awards. The film pulls no punches in exposing the cynical calculation behind some “prestige” performances.Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who famously “doesn't break character until the DVD commentary,” takes method acting to absurd extremes. The decision for Lazarus to undergo a skin pigmentation procedure to play a Black character is undeniably provocative, pushing the boundaries of satire in ways that sparked debate even upon the film's release. The character is a vehicle for Tropic Thunder to critique the pretentiousness of actors who go to unhealthy or inappropriate lengths to inhabit their roles—without excusing the controversial nature of Lazarus's arc.Meanwhile, Jack Black's Jeff Portnoy represents a different Hollywood trope: the comedic actor known for lowbrow, bodily-function-driven humour who secretly longs for artistic respect. Black leans into this portrayal with reckless abandon, turning Portnoy into a parody of a certain kind of comedian trapped by his own public persona. The Performances: A Career High for Downey Jr.Though the entire cast delivers hilarious performances, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his portrayal of Kirk Lazarus. His commitment to the role is complete, both playing up the absurdity of Lazarus's method acting and delivering an authentic, sharp commentary on Hollywood's more troubling habits. Downey Jr.'s performance walks a very fine line—one that could have easily veered into offensive territory. However, by using the character to critique the very behaviour he is embodying, the role becomes an effective, albeit a controversial, form of satire. His role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing it as one of the most memorable comedic performances of the 2000s.Ben Stiller's turn as the washed-up action star is also noteworthy, mainly because his character serves as the audience's guide through the absurdity of the film's events. Stiller's deadpan delivery and earnest attempts at drama make Tugg Speedman's cluelessness all the more entertaining.Jack Black, as Jeff Portnoy, veers into more chaotic, physical comedy, adding a layer of absurd humour to the group's dynamic. His struggles with drug addiction while lost in the jungle add a layer of vulnerability to the otherwise outlandish character.Controversy and Cultural ImpactTropic Thunder courted its fair share of controversy upon release, particularly for its portrayal of Kirk Lazarus and its use of blackface as a satirical device. Robert Downey Jr. defended the role as an exploration of actors' ethical boundaries, and the film itself uses Lazarus's storyline to highlight the ridiculous lengths some performers will go for their craft. Still, the role continues to prompt discussions on what constitutes effective satire versus offensive content.Additionally, the film's subplot involving Tugg Speedman's role in Simple Jack—a blatant parody of Hollywood's handling of disability—also generated pushback from advocacy groups. These controversies, however, are key to understanding the film's legacy. Tropic Thunder was always intended to provoke, challenge, and make audiences uncomfortable as they laugh.Despite (or perhaps because of) these controversies, Tropic Thunder remains a touchstone in discussions about satire, comedy, and filmmakers' responsibilities when dealing with sensitive topics. Its willingness to push boundaries and make audiences question the ethics of the film industry itself is part of what keeps it relevant more than 15 years later.Cinematic Elements: More than Just ComedyOn the technical side, Tropic Thunder is surprisingly well-made for what is primarily a comedy. John Toll's cinematography brings an epic, blockbuster feel to the film, particularly in the action sequences that are staged with the same level of intensity as a serious war movie. Theodore Shapiro's score also works in tandem with the action, providing a dramatic undertone that heightens the film's satirical edge. The jungle setting, explosive battles, and grandiose direction all emphasise how over-the-top Hollywood productions can become, underscoring the film's satire. While Tropic Thunder could have quickly been shot with a straightforward, low-budget comedy aesthetic, the decision to treat it like an actual war film makes the story's absurdity all the more pronounced.Legacy: A Satirical Time CapsuleIn many ways, Tropic Thunder serves as a time capsule of mid-2000s Hollywood. It captured a specific moment in the film industry when method acting, prestige pictures, and action blockbusters dominated the cultural conversation. The film remains controversial, but it's also widely regarded as one of the best satirical comedies of its time. Whether it skewers egotistical actors, lampoons Hollywood's excesses, or simply delivers absurd, laugh-out-loud moments, Tropic Thunder stands as a film that invites laughter and introspection in equal measure. As we explore Tropic Thunder's genius and provocations in this podcast episode, we ask: Does it still hold up? Is it a biting satire of Hollywood or an offens...
Let's review some more 70's movies now! Today we start with #1(Bloody Town Hall 1979) This documentary filmed in 1971 was a labor of love to edit and get it released by 79. This is a bloody mess that at least I found super interesting. BTH captures an important time, by way of an extremely odd event in NYC where Feminists take on Douchey Norman Mailer, a whole lotta chaos, and someone filmed it. NYC Gay Liberation Front members can be seen here for brief cameo. Other writers here of note are Germaine Greer, Diana Trilling, Jill Johnston, and Betty Friedman, to name a few. #2 is (Johnny got his gun 1971). This book was read by anyone in high school who had a Vet for an English teacher. Author and director here was famous blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, they made a bio pic about him with the meth making chemistry teacher from Breaking Bad. This films good and trippy, also extremely heavy and sad, also also METALLICA (listen to the song One for the plot). We love Donald Sutherland and he had just passed at the time of recording so we are slowly goin through the few DS films that we haven't already reviewed or showcased. Timothy Bottoms, Kathy Fields, and massive character actor Peter Brocco are here, along with the guy who became a tree in Mr. Sycamore. #3 (Badlands 1973) Ok this ones arty. The Dad of the guy from Platoon, and Carrie from Carrie star here. Carrie is groomed by the Apocalypse now guy to be with him and watch him play macho militia survivalist dude, after killing her father. #4 (Last American Hero 1973)Before he owned a video arcade in Tron, the guy from King Kong who loves magic was a moonshiner turned Southern hick nascar racer. Gary Busey helps him here, as well as Geraldine Fitzgerald, Valerie Perrrine, and Ned Beatty. #5 (Cassanova 1976) Donald Sutherland has Mr. Burns in the Simpson's Dracula parody hair here. Director here is the one and only Federico Fellini, and if you wanna read something funny, go to IMDB and check out his biography, unless someone changes it, it is one one the weirdest mini bio's I have ever read. Film looks stunning, but is it good? Well, our hot takes are ready. #6 (north Dallas forty 1979) This film experienced some real big problems taking on Big Sports. It's foolish to think that it wouldn't be the same as taking on the mob or the government. This is based on a book from someone who was in it Peter Gent. I was bullied by jocks and organized sports fans as far back as I can remember. I seem to be missing the gene to enjoy pretending I play a role sporting events. I digress, because I could watch a movie about sports or a show about sports if it's good, and this is good. Nick Nolte, and Charles Durning are here, as well as the director of First Blood, where John Jay Rambo was once in charge of million dollar equipment and now he can't even get a job parking cars. Finally today we review another made for TV movie gem called #7(The 5.20 an hour dream 1980) Alice from the hit TV show Alice is here and very good as Ellen a rad Mom who needs her car repaired and takes on patriarchy in the factory. Can these butts allow her to do a job she can do even though she is not a man? As always thanks for listening and please give us the stars and a review, it can help peeps find the pod.
When you saw 48 Hrs. in 1982, did you think to yourself "what I need more of, is definitely this!"? Well, someone sure did! In 1990, director Walter Hill (The Warriors, 48 Hrs.) returned to his chair to definitely not just remake his original 48 Hrs., and call it Another 48 Hrs.! It's like watching Nolte and Murphy create a whole new song with the same notes and beats. DISCLAIMER: Language and Spoilers!!ANOTHER 48 HRS.dir. Walter Hillstarring: Eddie Murphy; Nick Nolte; Brion James

We discuss all three entries which span the 2010 decade and fuse meathead action cinema with post 9/11 paranoia and anxieties: Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen, one of the two 2013 thrillers about a terrorist attack on the White House, the ultraviolent sequel London Has Fallen, released in the wake of the real life terror attacks in London and Paris, and the best film in the franchise so far, Angel Has Fallen, where a weary Mike Banning has to take on the deep state and evil military contractors who have framed him for an assassination attempt on peacenik President Morgan Freeman, which leads him to have to team up with his estranged dad Nick Nolte, interrupting his Unabomber lifestyle. Plus: a review of Mike Banning's classified Secret Service dossier (which I found on the internet), and how excited we all are for the return of Butler's other iconic screen hero Big Nick O'Brien in next January's Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. "AFFLIC" - the Aflac duck if he was talking about this movie! For real, though, a lot of the characters in this film could have used some insurance based on many of the events that take place in Paul Schrader's 1997 Russell Banks adaptation AFFLICTION. Returning to the show to help us discuss this snowbound story of alcoholism and abuse is writer and film programmer Glenn Heath, Jr.! Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're taking a retrospective look at 48 Hrs. (1982), a film that, while pioneering in the buddy cop genre, certainly shows its age in terms of attitudes and content. Directed by Walter Hill and starring Nick Nolte alongside Eddie Murphy in his film debut, this action-comedy navigates the rough dynamics between a hardened cop and a wise-cracking convict.48 Hrs. pairs Jack Cates, a grizzled San Francisco detective played by Nick Nolte, with Reggie Hammond, a fast-talking convict portrayed by Eddie Murphy. Cates pulls Hammond from prison for just 48 hours to help track down a murderous duo, setting the stage for a partnership that's as contentious as it is critical. The core of the film revolves around the duo's urgent hunt through the city's underbelly, with their clashing styles leading to both comedic and tense moments. While the movie delivers action and quick quips, the racial dynamics and some character portrayals can feel jarring and uncomfortable to a modern audience. Why It's ProblematicOutdated Attitudes: The film's portrayal of race relations and its handling of certain stereotypes have not aged well, reflecting broader societal norms of the early '80s that can be offensive today.Chemistry and Conflict: While Nolte and Murphy's dynamic is memorable, it's sometimes overshadowed by the film's problematic elements. Their interactions, meant to be humorous, often delve into sensitive areas with questionable execution.Genre Impact: Despite its shortcomings, 48 Hrs. is credited with setting the template for future buddy cop films, blending action with humor and drama, and showcasing Murphy's star potential. At its essence, 48 Hrs. tries to tackle themes of redemption and partnership against a backdrop of crime and punishment. However, the execution sometimes falls short of addressing these themes with the depth or sensitivity that contemporary audiences might expect. For those interested in the evolution of film genres and the impact of cultural context on storytelling, 48 Hrs. serves as a useful, albeit flawed, case study. It's a reminder of how far cinematic narratives have come in depicting diversity and relationships.Join us as we dissect 48 Hrs., not just for its place in action-comedy history but also for its reflection of past attitudes and what lessons can be drawn today. Whether you find it a guilty pleasure or a problematic relic, there's no doubt that it opens up important conversations.
