Send us a textWhat happens when a man who's spent most of his adult life cycling through addiction and prison cells finds himself hiding in a briar bush on his 40th birthday? This raw, powerful testimony reveals an extraordinary journey from darkness to light.Growing up without God and convinced that believers were fools, our guest's choices led him to try drugs at 16, receive his first felony charge at 18, and enter a devastating cycle of incarceration, addiction, and broken relationships. After multiple prison sentences and years lost to methamphetamine addiction, everything changed the night he fled from police and hid in a thicket of briars after stealing a little girl's bicycle. The transformation that followed wasn't immediate or easy. Despite initial resistance to faith-based solutions, a series of seemingly coincidental events – a chance encounter at a church trunk-or-treat, prayer cards spanning eight years with his name on them, and the discovery that his daughter had been the first person to donate to the very church that would later lead him to faith – revealed a divine orchestration that left him undeniable evidence of God's pursuit.Today, this former inmate serves as a pastor, prison programs director, addiction counselor, and trains law enforcement officers in crisis intervention. His testimony resonates deeply with incarcerated individuals because he's walked in their shoes, giving him unique credibility when sharing how faith transformed his life."There's a difference between being saved and being rescued," he explains. "Some people are saved before walking off a cliff, while others like me fell long ago and were yelling for help from the ravine. When that rope finally comes down and you make it out of a place you never thought you would – it's different."This powerful story reminds us that no one is beyond redemption, that our most painful experiences often become our greatest qualifications for helping others, and that purpose can emerge from our deepest pain.Support the showIf you would like to be a guest and share your story, click this link: https://thepromoter.org/story/ Thanks for Listening, and subscribe to hear a new episode each week!

The weekly message from Community Church Edinburgh. This talk is from Sunday, 29th Jun 2025.In this talk we’ll explore part of David’s journey, namely his transition from a life of success and orientation in King Saul’s court to a place of suffering and disorientation in exile. We’ll use Psalm 22 to consider what it’s like to experience disorientation and what we can learn about how we respond to God from that place. We apologise, but due to technical issues, this recording is incomplete and only includes the second half of Malcolm’s talk.
A Wellington Councillor's calling out her peers over a new $2.3-million-dollar CBD public toilet. It replaces an old block that had become a crime hot-spot. The building's wooden panels are lined with a $150,000 lighting system, designed to display a night-time show. Diane Calvert says spending in the Capital follows a pattern. "This is the culture in the organisation - it just has to change. Toilets are really important in our CBD, but did we need to take three years building them and over $2 million dollars and light them up like a glowing monument?" Everton are braced for another summer of interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. The centre-back remains on the radar of several Premier League clubs. The Blues rebuffed two bids for the 22-year-old from Manchester United last summer. Neither offer, with the second for a package worth around £50m, came close to meeting the club's valuation of a player who had enjoyed a stunning breakthrough year. Branthwaite is under contract at Everton until the end of June 2027, having signed a new deal following his emergence into the first team in the opening months of the 2023/24 campaign. Everton, who signed him from Carlisle United in 2020, are in a strong position to rebuff speculative interest as a result. Looking deeper into the squad, a number of Everton players with uncertain futures remain out the club, but for how long? Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane will see their contracts run out at the end of June while Nathan Patterson has struggled to impress upon his return from injury. A forward remains a priority for the blues having been rebuffed by Liam Delap, who chose Chelsea. Where does that leave Beto who has turned his Everton career around with a bag full of goals in the second half of the season? Join Ian Croll and Tony Scott for the Wednesday addition of the Royal Blue podcast as they discuss the latest transfer news and rumours and give their thoughts on who they would keep, sell and release. *Emotional farewell to Goodison Park | 16-page Everton souvenir picture special:* https://shop.regionalnewspapers.co.uk/liverpool-echo-monday-19th-may-2025-4583-p.asp *Goodbye to Goodison special souvenir edition:* https://tinyurl.com/GoodbyeGoodisonSouvenir *Gavin Buckland's Book 'The End' | Order your copy here:* https://tinyurl.com/GavinBucklandTheEnd Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO's Royal Blue YouTube channel. About 25 years ago – years after stints as a professional pilot, steel worker, and certified public accountant – Randy Calvert discovered focus groups. “I just saw the value, and then, the more you do it, the more value you see in it,” he explains to host Dan Ambrose. This 4-in-1 compilation episode is about capital that doesn't flow on its own. It has to be pushed into places with no pitch decks and no polished management teams. The places where spreadsheets say “too risky,” but the need is obvious to anyone paying attention. This is capital for the common good, yes – but it's also capital that works. These aren't grants. These are investments with measurable returns and track records to prove it.In this episode, we revisit conversations with four guests who've built the policies and portfolios to make this kind of capital move.Jenn Pryce, President and CEO of Calvert Impact CapitalJenn describes Calvert Impact Capital as a bridge between retail capital and the places banks won't go – solar in Sub-Saharan Africa, affordable housing in the U.S., even sovereign bonds too small for Wall Street to care about. With over $2.5 billion raised, their flagship Community Investment Note is accessible for as little as $20.For Jenn, community investing isn't about beating the market – it's about redefining it. “We've learned the risk isn't where people think it is,” she says. By working through local intermediaries and building data-driven track records, Calvert helps prove what's possible.Full episodeBen Rick, Co-Founder of Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC)Ben left the City not because he couldn't succeed there – but because he did. After years at Goldman, UBS, and Lehman, the returns stopped justifying the worldview. “Surely there's something I can do that's better than this,” he told himself. That became Social and Sustainable Capital, a private credit fund lending to UK charities – no shareholders, no profit motive, but plenty of contracts to deliver critical services.SASC backs groups supporting domestic abuse survivors, people with disabilities, and youth exiting care – organizations with steady revenue but little access to traditional finance.Full episodeStephen Muers, Chief Executive Officer of Better Society Capital (BSC)Stephen Muers came to Better Society Capital after a high-level government career – and brought with him a systems brain. At BSC, the mission isn't just to make good investments. It's to make social investment possible at scale.BSC operates at the wholesale level, backing funds that then invest in frontline charities, social enterprises, and mission-driven lenders.BSC is also focused on market transformation. In 10 years, they've helped grow the UK social investment market 12-fold. And yet, it still isn't enough.Full episodeStewart Langdon, Partner and Co-Head of South Asian Investments at LeapFrog InvestmentsStewart joined LeapFrog early, back when the firm was still raising its first fund. He came in to help move serious capital into places most investors overlook – India, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia – and do it in a way that actually reaches people.LeapFrog started with insurance. Not because it was easy, but because it mattered. Health shocks, accidents, lost assets – these were the things pulling families back into poverty. Then came credit. Then healthcare. Lee Calvert from the outstanding Blood & Mud rugby podcast joined Brett McKay & Harry Jones on The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast to try and make sense of a Champions Cup Final that not too many saw coming, to contemplate where, if anywhere, Northampton and Bordeaux will find their point of difference, and just where 1980s mega group Duran Duran fits into this complicated picture. Plus, Lee shares some thoughts on the latest developments in Welsh Rugby, where having maintained four professional sides equally as part of a long-term strategy launched in 2024, the WRU announced an intention to implement a new two-tier funding system amid reports it intends to cut a team from its professional tier, reports which the Union has neither confirmed nor denied. "We are not here for ourselves—we are here for other people. Period." These words from Orena Perry don't just summarize her perspective—they declare her purpose. Her story, like so many rooted in Detroit, is a vibrant blend of faith, family, and fearless entrepreneurship. From her great-grandmother's home on Calvert to the stages of Jazz on the Boulevard and the halls of Redford High, Orena's life journey has been one of intention, perseverance, and spiritual grounding. “I've always been a servant,” she says, reflecting on years organizing events, empowering Black-owned businesses, and uplifting voices through conferences, prayer breakfasts, and women's luncheons. After surviving a near-fatal car accident in high school, Orena's life took on a deeper clarity—faith became more than a belief; it became her strategy. “God can tell you when to move, when to stop, and when something is over—but you've got to be able to listen,” she shares. As a mother of three daughters who each embody her entrepreneurial spirit—one in design, one in administration, and one leading programs for autistic youth—Orena has turned her business into a family legacy. Watching them blossom, she says, is her proudest accomplishment. Whether mentoring young boys through the Loop It program, or sharing stages with legends during her Detroit Black Expo days, her impact has always extended far beyond any resume. “It was never about me,” she insists. “It was always about them.” With a laugh that warms the soul and a conviction that can organize armies, Orena Perry walks in grace, models resilience, and reminds Detroit—and the world—that healing begins when we make space to breathe, listen, and serve. What in Orena's journey inspires you to listen more deeply to your own calling? STORY 5: Buford man convicted of molesting 7-year-old stepdaughter, child's mother found guilty of trying to cover it up A Buford man, Javen Tyree Richardson, was convicted of molesting his 7-year-old stepdaughter and sentenced to two consecutive life terms, with 80 years to be served in prison. The child’s mother, Akilah Amin, was convicted of coercing her daughter to lie to investigators and sentenced to 20 years, with seven years in prison. Both are barred from contacting the child or her siblings and must register as sex offenders. The abuse, reported by the child at school, occurred in 2022-2023, with Amin offering bribes to silence her daughter, causing further emotional harm. Break 3: STORY 6: Rich McCormick touts extending Trump tax cuts U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick announced that extending Trump-era tax cuts, set to expire this year, will be Congress's top priority after the Easter recess. Speaking to North Fulton business owners, McCormick highlighted the economic benefits of the cuts, while addressing concerns over tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and uncertainty in trade with China. He emphasized the need to maintain the 21% corporate tax rate but acknowledged challenges in funding promises like removing taxes on tips and Social Security. Democrats oppose the extension, citing benefits for the wealthy and risks to social programs, which McCormick dismissed as "scare tactics." STORY 7: Federal judge weighing whether to extend order protecting international students whose visitor status was revoked A federal judge in Atlanta, Victoria Marie Calvert, will decide by month's end whether to extend the visitor status of 133 current and former college students whose status was suddenly revoked without explanation. Calvert issued a temporary restraining order restoring their status, but it expires May 1. The students' lawyer, Charles Kuck, argues the Department of Homeland Security violated its own rules, while the government seeks tailored injunctions based on individual expiration dates. This case, potentially the largest of its kind, reflects a growing trend of legal challenges, with judges nationwide issuing 17 similar restraining orders. It started with John and Liz Calvert—a power couple who vanished without a trace—and Dennis Gerwing, the accountant who was supposed to balance their books. It ended with a blood-soaked bathtub and a suspicious ‘suicide' that sent shockwaves through South Carolina's Lowcountry. Scripture is full of instances of effective intercession. We see time after time of people like Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Esther, Paul plead on behalf of others and God do some amazing things. If we're being honest, sometimes that can feel un-relatable or distant from our experience in life. Through this panel, we would get insight into lived experience to bring to life the biblical principles on prayer we read about with our guest panelists, Marc Kohler and Lisa Calvert.Metro exists to help young adults see the beauty of Jesus and seek to know Him personally. Hello Rank Squad! On Monday news broke that Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid this summer was close to being completed, with the Liverpool defender seemingly leaving his boyhood club for free at the expiration of his contract this summer, and it got us thinking - who else is in the same category of being on the open market this summer and where could they go?We start with a discussion of the three Liverpool names that have been in the spotlight all season - Trent, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah - taking a look at who is perhaps most expendable, who is least replaceable, and what we think might play out, especially with Salah and VVD, as well as taking a brief look at some potential replacements. Then it's on to some other names - we discuss the futures of Angel Gomes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leroy Sane, Jonathan David, and young Swedish talent Roony Bardghji - and where they all might be plying their trades next season given the expiration of their current deals at their current homes. Jack finishes us off with a few more names to keep an eye on as the deadlines for extensions get closer and closer - Andre Franck Zambo Anguissa of Napoli, Marco Verratti of Al-Arabi - who is being linked with a move back to Europe - Sergio Reguilon of Tottenham Hotspur, and Espanyol captain Javi Puado. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Today we're talking with Jeffrey Ricketts, who, in July of 2022, took ownership of Mullen's Folly in Calvert, Maryland. Mullen's Folly is a log house located in northeastern Cecil County, Maryland. It was built possibly before 1789. It operated as a general store from 1789-1823 servicing the surrounding community with a wide variety of goods sourced in Philadelphia and Wilmington. After 1823, the building was converted into a house. From 1859-2022 the house was owned by four generations of the Berriker-FitzGerald family, until it was sold to Jeffrey, who is currently restoring the building to its late 18th-century appearance, and is rediscovering all of its lost history.
