After earning a degree from Texas A&M, Sims returned to Amarillo to work for Lavin Architects as an intern—and never looked back. In an address to Congress on Tuesday, President Donald Trump once again cast himself as a divine savior of the American people.“I was saved by God to make America great again,” he claimed as he recounted the failed assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. During his 100-minute speech, Trump made direct appeals to the Christian right, a major segment of his base: “This will be our greatest era. With God's help over the next four years, we are going to lead this nation even higher.”He framed a series of policy proposals — many attacking civil rights for minorities and trans people — as part of God's plan for the nation. He called on Congress “to pass a bill permanently banning and criminalizing sex changes on children,” proclaiming “our message to every child in America is that you are perfect, exactly the way God made you.”In some ways, Trump is the kind of political leader the Christian right has been seeking for decades. He has fully championed the movement's long-held policy priorities: overturning Roe v. Wade, pushing prayer in schools, and curbing LGBTQ+ rights. Now he is taking their movement even further, embedding right-wing Christian ideology into every facet of federal policy. It's a “broad coalition across Christian denominations,” says journalist Talia Lavin, “whose goal is an extremely socially restrictive agenda.” Lavin, author of "Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America," argues that today's Christian right is more receptive to authoritarianism than previous generations. “They've reached a kind of acme or apotheosis of their power and influence, where that sort of attitude towards democracy has attained real relevance in the way we're governed.” On this week's episode of The Intercept Briefing, Lavin and Intercept reporter Jessica Washington examine the Christian right's growing influence, its long-term strategy, and what, if anything, can be done to curb their vision for the country. Washington warns that many liberals dismiss Trump's alliance to the Christian right as fringe, missing its deep political impact. “While it's this convenient political organizing tool, it is also a deeply held belief,” she says — one that rejects the idea that Black people and queer people have a rightful place in American leadership. Trump, she adds, validates the belief that only white Christian males are the true inheritors of the nation's legacy. “Trump is both a product of and an accelerant of this movement.” Countering the rapid lurch toward Christian nationalism, Washington argues, requires solidarity. “We all have to band together and fight this together. And not allowing ourselves to be siloed into different issues. And recognizing that this is an attack on everyone who doesn't fit this very specific mold.” Lavin calls for active resistance — a “joyous cacophony” — to the Christian right's war on diversity, on the poor, and democracy: “We're gonna be gender rebels. We're not going to accept the gutting of social services. We're not going to accept a king.” Rather than doomscrolling, she encourages people to do “something, anything — feeding someone, attending a protest — whatever it is. All of that is how we win.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What prompts someone to pivot their career path entirely? For Dr. Kyle Lavin, it was the compassionate care he witnessed during his mother's illness that led him to psychiatry and palliative care, despite initially resisting following in his father's footsteps. This episode spotlights Kyle's emotional journey, sparked by personal family challenges, including his mother's battle with severe health issues and substance use disorder. His story is one of resilience and determination, ultimately leading him to champion the integration of behavioral health into serious illness care, aiming to bridge the gap in our fragmented healthcare system. As we navigate through the complex challenges faced by patients trying to access behavioral health services, Kyle underscores the systemic issues within mental health care. The difficulties of seeking help in a siloed system, especially during vulnerable times, are significant. We dissect these hurdles, discussing the critical shortage of mental health providers and the urgent need for a more integrated approach, particularly for the aging population. By examining collaborative care models and the potential role of non-licensed providers, we highlight innovative strategies for expanding care availability and ensuring each team member operates at their fullest potential. In a world increasingly reliant on technology, we explore how AI is reshaping patient experiences, particularly in hospice and mental health services. From AI-enhanced patient intake platforms to the benefits of telehealth, the discussion highlights the transformative potential and ethical challenges of incorporating technology in high-touch fields. We reflect on maintaining a balance between technology and human touch, emphasizing the need for compassionate care. Join us as we delve into the evolving perceptions of mental health, drawing parallels to advancements in palliative care, and consider the future landscape of healthcare in an age of rapid technological change.Guest: Dr. Kyle Lavin, MD. Lavin takes her subjects seriously, but not uncritically, and especially focuses on the wrecked and ruined lives left in the wake of conservative evangelicalism's more conspiratorial and authoritarian elements, from the Satanic Panic to James Dobson's parenting manual on how to beat a "strong-willed child" into compliance. Along the way, they talk about the triumph of QAnon, End Times theology, the importance of the New Apostolic Reformation, and more—all with an eye toward how these religious views and practices help explain conservative evangelicals' overwhelming support for Donald Trump.Sources:Talia Lavin, Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America(2024)— Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy (2020)— "The Sword and the Sandwich"Listen again:"The Prayers and Prophecies of Pat Robertson," Know Your Enemy, July 17, 2023

This week, in more good news for Irish female writers, the Mary Lavin Place will also be publicly unveiled in Wilton Park, in Dublin's south side. It's a public plaza to commemorate the famous writer who lived nearby on Lad Lane with her three daughters. In today's episode, Róisín Ingle is joined by Lavin's granddaughter Kathleen MacMahon to talk about the writer's extraordinary life and what this commemoration means to the family. We're also joined by historian, lecturer, and Director of Gender Studies at UCD Mary McAuliffe who campaigned in 2013 for the Rosie Hackett bridge to be named after the Irish revolutionary activist. McAuliffe explains why so few Irish streets or spaces are named after women and what can be done to change this. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Last week, we featured an interview with the leftist American theologian, Jim Wallis, who warned about the false white gospel of contemporary Christian nationalism. And we return to the existential dangers of American religion today with Talia Lavin whose new book, Wild Faith, warns that the Christian right is actually taking over America. In contrast with Wallis, however, Lavin doesn't offer a more loving version of American christianity as an theological alternative to the evangelical right. For radically secular Lavin, the challenge is to get any kind of fundamentalist religion out of politics. That's the way to fix democracy. That's how to save America.Talia Lavin is the author of the critically acclaimed book Culture Warlords. She is a journalist who has had bylines in the New Yorker, the New Republic, the New York Times Review of Books, the Washington Post, and more. In this episode, Helly Torres, Hispanic Heritage Month lead of the SWE Latinos Affinity Group, speaks with Sunita Lavin, a dedicated ally and SWE Latinos AG member, about the critical role of allyship in advancing Latinas in STEM. Torres explores findings from a recent “Lean In” report, which reveals that Latinas remain underrepresented in engineering and tech, especially in leadership roles. Lavin shares her personal journey as an ally and offers insights into how mentorship, advocacy, and a mindset of curiosity can bridge cultures and drive meaningful change.
MT Attorney General Austin Knudsen is so dumb, he doesn't realize he can't use the Scapegoat Strategy when the public already knows that the MHP survey condemned HIM for HIS leadership failures, NOT Col. In a spotlight episode of The Rebooting Show, I spoke with Affinity Global CEO Lavin Punjabi for his view of how publishers adapt their affiliate operations. Affinity operates NucleusLinks, an affiliate operations platform that serves as something akin to Google Ad Manager for affiliate operations. Some takeaways:Many publishers are playing catch up. Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest internet business models, with its growth turbocharged by the ease and rise of e-commerce. Many legacy publishers were behind in adopting affiliate models, seeing performance ads as scraping the bottom of the barrel compared to impression models. “The biggest publishers in the world are scrambling to compete in this area that they kind of ignored for a generation,” Lavin said.Affiliate stresses silos. The entire idea of affiliate runs contrary to the notion of church and state. At one of The Rebooting's dinners focused on commerce, I heard a large publisher lament how the editorial team would battle to control personal finance reviews rather than the commerce team. They were basically working against each other internally. "Some publishers it's the main thing, but for a lot of marquee publishers, it's a department, and they have to figure out where it fits because it's not really editorial, but it's not really sales."Dotdash Meredith is an anomaly. Dotdash Meredith is the manifestation of these worlds colliding, with the internet-native Dotdash taking over the legacy Time Inc publications. It's telling that as publishers sound the alarm over AI, DDDM has weathered this storm and returned to growth. "They came from a commerce first angle, which is operated with CPS for a large degree. And then eventually with Meredith, which was CPM, they tried to find middle ground."
Self-actualization in business and life is a lot like inventing a snowboarding move, or preparing for the Crossfit Games. You have to set a vision, have awareness, and do the work while still pacing yourself. The scary truth is: a lot of people will never self-actualize because we're afraid of this process. But there is a process you can implement to make self-actualization easier. Today, I'm joined by two athletes and entrepreneurs, Sylvania Harron and Jeff Lavin. We talk about what extreme sport can teach us about self-actualization and the secret to great leadership. The first thing a team leader needs is self-awareness. You must know your strengths and weaknesses. Typically, people think they can do everything, but true success comes from focusing on what you do best and finding others to support the areas where you're weaker. This involves clarifying what you excel at (level 8 skills) and focusing on those, while delegating other tasks to those who can handle them better. Achieving anything great requires you to focus on the nitty gritty and the 30,000ft view. at the same time. Great leaders can zoom in on the minutest details and also zoom out to see the bigger picture. In high-performance scenarios, understanding when to push hard and when to pace yourself is critical. This approach prevents burnout and ensures sustainable performance over the long term. Many people are scared of self-actualization. They avoid facing their dreams and fears because they're afraid of failure and the hard work required to reach their highest potential. However, facing these fears head-on and becoming self-aware are crucial steps toward personal and professional growth. Inventing a snowboarding trick can teach us a lot about self-actualization. You need to have air awareness, understanding the bail points to avoid injury if things go wrong, and adhere to the four P's: Practice, Patience, Persistence, and Perspective. Practice involved countless reps, refining your skills continuously. Persistence means getting back up after every fall, despite the setbacks. Perspective required external feedback, analyzing the metrics or watching video footage to align your performance with your goals.
