The Root Cause of Emotional Eating In Sobriety There's something we don't talk about enough. You quit drinking. You do the work. You go to meetings. You build a life you're proud of. And then… You find yourself standing in the kitchen at 9pm. Again. Maybe it's sugar. Maybe it's "just a little snack." Maybe it's eating in secret. Maybe it's feeling out of control around food in a way that feels eerily familiar. A lot of people in recovery don't want to admit this part. But it's common. Very common. In this week's conversation with Ali Shapiro, we unpacked something that changed the way I think about food struggles — especially for sober people. She said something powerful: "You don't love food so much. You're trying to feel safe." Because if addiction is avoidance of pain… then food can absolutely become the next strategy. Not because you're weak. Not because you lack discipline. Not because you're broken. But because your nervous system still wants relief. It's Not About Food. It's About Belonging. Here's the framework that stopped me in my tracks. Ali asks her clients two questions: Think of a positive food memory. Think of a painful food moment. Then she looks for one thing. Belonging. When food memories feel warm and good, there's usually connection. Celebration. Safety. When food feels chaotic or secretive, there's usually isolation. Shame. Disconnection. It's not about calories. It's about whether you feel like you matter. That's a different conversation entirely.     Why We Switch Addictions In recovery, we often say, "It's not the alcohol." The alcohol was the symptom. The deeper driver was emotional regulation, belonging, identity, safety. So when alcohol leaves… The system looks for another solution. Food is legal. Food is celebrated. Food is socially rewarded. And our culture makes overeating normal — especially during stress or the holidays. So if you're sober and struggling with food? You're not failing. Your nervous system is trying to solve a problem.     The Question That Changes Everything Ali offered one simple question that reframes the whole struggle: "Why does this make sense?" Instead of: "What's wrong with me?" Try: Why does this make sense? Why does it make sense that after a stressful day, I want sugar? Why does it make sense that when I feel unseen, I want to eat? Why does it make sense that when I feel alone, I crave something soothing? That question moves you from shame to compassion. And compassion is where change actually begins.     Practical Action Steps Here are 5 ways to start applying this immediately: 1. Run the Food Memory Exercise Journal two columns: A positive food memory. A difficult food moment. Ask: Where was belonging present? Where was it missing? 2. Ask "Why Does This Make Sense?" Every time you feel out of control around food this week, pause and ask that question. No fixing. No rules. Just curiosity. 3. Delay the Behavior by 5 Minutes Not to restrict — but to observe. What am I feeling right now? Lonely? Overstimulated? Unappreciated? 4. Expand Your Definition of Fun If you've tied indulgence to being "the fun one," ask: What else feels fun to me now? Rest? Deep conversation? Leaving early? Going to bed proud? 5. Create One Small Belonging Ritual Call someone. Go to a meeting. Text a friend. Sit on the porch instead of isolating. Food is often replacing connection. Replace it back.     Resources Ali Shapiro's assessment + programs:

HEADLINE: GAIUS & GERMANICUS IN LONDINIUM 91 AD: Reclaiming James I as the True Founding Father. Preparing to see a mock battle staged by centurions in Londinium, Gaius and Germanicus discuss the unappreciated legacy of James I (James VI of Scotland), asserting he is the true founding father of the United States. James I, an intellectual king who took the throne in 1603, faced challenges from the powerful Spanish Empire over territorial claims in the New World. When the Spanish ambassador complained about incursions near Chesapeake Bay, James I gave an "opaquely professional" response, disclaiming crown involvement and calling it "private business." This non-committal stance prevented war and allowed colonization to proceed. By 1618, he solidified this by granting a charter to the struggling Virginia colony. His light management established self-governance, setting the course for both modern Britain and the United States. 1901 OLD HOUSE Retry

As educators and school leaders, we often pour our hearts into our work, only to sometimes feel that our efforts aren't fully appreciated. This tension between service and appreciation reveals a deeper truth about where we seek validation and how it impacts our ability to lead and teach effectively.   When staff members feel unappreciated, whether they're teachers facing demanding parents or support staff feeling overlooked, there's a fundamental shift happening in their sense of identity and empowerment. The challenge here isn't just about getting more appreciation. It's about understanding why we need it and what happens when we don't get it the way we expect.   Tune in this week to discover practical ways to help your staff reconnect with their internal validation and professional identity. I share strategies for creating a culture of equal value where every role is recognized as an essential puzzle piece. Most importantly, you'll learn how to guide your team back to appreciating themselves first, making external recognition the cherry on top rather than the foundation of their professional worth.   Find the full episode show notes and transcript, click here: https://angelakellycoaching.com/406   Get in touch with me:  https://www.facebook.com/akellycoaching/ https://www.instagram.com/angelakellycoaching/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/angela-kelly-robeck-57774835

It was just announced that David closed a $75 million Series A funding round…valuing the 8-month-old startup at $725 million. Launched the same exact day as my previous content with David Co-Founder (and CEO) Peter Rahal went live in September 2024, David's current valuation has already surpassed his first protein bar exit, which involved Kellogg's acquiring RXBAR for $600 million in 2017. But David will obviously use the investment to scale manufacturing, accelerate product development, and expand inventory to meet surging demand. Moreover, in an effort to strengthen its ability to scale…David acquired Epogee, the food technology firm behind EPG, a plant-based fat alternative that significantly reduces calories and fat without compromising taste or texture. And at first glance, it might seem like an odd use of capital to acquire an ingredient supplier…but in my latest first principles thinking content, I'll explain the beauty of this vertical integration investment decision. And I'm sure some industry pundits (or so-called MAHA nutrition experts) will cry that EPG is a step back towards the fat-free craze of my 90's youth. And you're entitled to that opinion but honestly keep it to yourself…because I'm a business-minded simpleton admiring the beautiful strategic alignment between protein bar consumers wanting a “protein-to-calorie” ratio like leading ready-to-mix and RTD protein shakes, and David gaining exclusive control over an important supply chain element making that possible. David isn't just another protein bar brand, it's a food technology company focused on building tools that make it easier for consumers to eat well without compromise.

Unappreciated But Beautiful - #10005

A Word With You

I kept telling my wife that I expected Tarzan or George of the Jungle to come swinging through our house at any moment. She had set up a corner of the house as her own personal little jungle to accommodate the new guests in our house - our orchids. She found some sources for orchids that were pretty reasonable, and she really enjoyed collecting them. They were very stately and lovely flowers. I guess I learned then that they come in beautiful shades of lavender, purple, red, and yellow. My favorite gardener did the best she could to create the kind of conditions those delicate flowers are used to. They need warmth in the day, and they need cooler temps at night, light, pure water, and humidity. Orchids are tropical plants and they're often found in out-of-the-way places; which poses a fascinating scenario: millions of these spectacular flowers over many centuries, displaying this exotic beauty, growing where no one may have ever seen them. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Unappreciated But Beautiful." Those orchids tell us something about what the Creator of all of us is like. He's extravagant in creating beauty deep in remote jungles, deep beneath the sea, where much of that beauty is never seen. That happens with people, too. In fact, there's probably someone listening right now who is a uniquely beautiful person - even though few, if any, have ever appreciated your beauty. An orchid doesn't need an admirer to be beautiful. Beauty unappreciated is beauty still the same. God really did do something beautiful when He created you. First, because you're created in God's own image. The Bible tells us that "God created man in his own image...male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:27). The Bible goes on to say that God knit you together in your mother's womb. That's in Psalm 139 that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:13-14). You may not have been treated like you're a divine masterpiece (maybe you haven't even believed it yourself) but that doesn't change the fact that you are, because God only does masterpieces. Unfortunately, we've all made the mistake of trying to find our worth in other things: a relationship, a marriage, our children, our friends, our success. But there's never enough love. There's never enough approval. Here's why. Colossians 1:16, our word for today from the Word of God, reveals that "all things were created by Him and for Him." The "Him" is Jesus Christ. And you were created by Him and for Him. The Bible also makes it clear that we haven't lived for Him. It says, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). Our beauty, our worth are rooted in the One who made us. And we're away from Him because of a lifetime of self-serving and sinful choices. I'm so thankful that God loved us too much to leave it that way. He launched a very costly rescue mission. He sent His only Son, Jesus, to actually lay down His life in exchange for ours. To put it simply, you did the sinning, but Jesus did the dying for it so you could cross that awful canyon - the sin canyon between you and God - and experience the love you were made for and the One who gave you your worth. Suddenly, with Him in your heart, you know who you are: someone worth so much to God that He made you in His image and He paid for you with His blood. You've been looking for a long time for a love and worth that only Jesus Christ can give you. And today you can actually begin your personal relationship with Him and finally be complete. What it's going to take, though, is your act of faith, telling Jesus, "I'm pinning all my hopes on You and what You did when You died for me on the cross. I want to belong to You, Jesus, from this day on." If that's what you want, please go to our website. Go to ANewStory.com. When you find Jesus, you really find yourself, too. Because you discover how very loved you are. {module Open a chat window - needhim}

Transforming Spaces and Minds: A Journey of Decluttering and Self-Discovery In this week's episode of "Muscles and Mindset," Ali Novitsky, MD shares a personal update, revealing that she recently rented a 15-foot dumpster as a Mother's Day gift to herself and went on a de-junking spree. Alongside her husband Mark, she cleaned out their garage, discarding items that had been unused for 12 years, which felt incredibly liberating. She also mentions making some upgrades around the house, including a new sauna room and a soon-to-be-finished studio for recording content. Topic Discussion The episode focuses on facing recurring, tough issues that continue to surface in our lives. Dr. Novitsky discusses unresolved emotional issues such as body image concerns, people-pleasing behaviors, and feelings of unfulfillment, emphasizing that these issues will persist until addressed. She shares a personal story about feeling unappreciated on Mother's Day and how confronting those uncomfortable feelings allowed her to move on quickly and feel more empowered. Additionally, she talks about how old patterns and thoughts, particularly related to body image and weight loss, can resurface during stressful times. The key, she notes, is not to push these feelings away but to acknowledge them and understand their underlying messages. The core of this episode is about facing unresolved emotional issues that keep resurfacing in our lives. Here are some key points: Emotional Baggage: We all have unresolved issues that we can't hide from. These issues often resurface during stressful times. Personal Example: Dr. Ali shares a personal story about feeling unappreciated on Mother's Day. Despite knowing that her family appreciates her, she felt disappointed. She decided to voice her feelings, which was a big step as she often struggles with setting boundaries and expressing her needs. Body Image: Dr. Ali discuss how old patterns and thoughts about body image can resurface, especially during stressful times. It's crucial to acknowledge these thoughts and feelings rather than suppress them. Feeling Unfulfilled: Dr. Ali talks about the importance of identifying what makes us feel unfulfilled and taking steps to address it. It's easy to blame external factors, but true fulfillment comes from within. Practical Tips Acknowledge Your Feelings: Don't push away negative thoughts or feelings. Acknowledge them and try to understand what they are telling you. Voice Your Needs: It's important to express your needs and feelings, even if it feels uncomfortable. Self-Compassion: Surround yourself with compassion, especially when dealing with body image issues or feelings of unfulfillment. Program Updates Dr. Ali also provides exciting updates about ongoing and upcoming programs, including the GLP-1 Weight Loss program, Transform® 8.0, 31 Days of FIT, Fit Woman Collective, and an upcoming retreat in the Berkshires. Additionally, there's a new program called Muscles and Mindset on the horizon, which will offer a cost-effective strength training regimen for anyone on a health journey.   Timestamps 00:00:00 - Introduction and Episode Title Dilemma 00:00:47 - Renting a Dumpster and Decluttering 00:02:42 - Home Renovations and Sauna Room 00:05:33 - Creating a Home Studio 00:06:06 - Importance of Decluttering and Minimalism 00:06:17 - Main Topic Introduction: You Can't Hide 00:07:01 - Addressing Emotional Baggage 00:08:06 - Personal Example: Boundary Breaches and People-Pleasing 00:09:00 - Mother's Day Disappointment and Voicing Feelings 00:12:26 - Weight Loss Journey and Body Dysmorphia 00:15:36 - Handling Old Thought Patterns and Stress 00:18:26 - Feeling Unfulfilled and Seeking Fulfillment 00:20:02 - Identifying and Voicing Hidden Feelings 00:20:45 - GLP-1 Weight Loss Program 00:21:17 - Transform 8.0 Program Details 00:21:58 - 31 Days of Fit Program 00:22:09 - Fit Woman Collective Program 00:22:30 - Berkshires Retreat and Upcoming Programs 00:22:51 - Muscles and Mindset Program Introduction 00:23:41 - Conclusion and Sign-Off Resources Optimizing GLP-1 Weight Loss Program.
