This week, host Andrea Lopez-Villafaña drops her interview with new County Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe. This conversation happened fresh off a big week for Montgomery Steppe. She served on the San Diego City Council until the election for Council President, casting the deciding vote to secure Sean Elo-Rivera's position. Then she was sworn in as Supervisor, replacing Nathan Fletcher to represent District 4 in the heart of the county. Her first big vote in that role was on SB 43 — a state law that expands definitions and use of conservatorship. In this episode, Montgomery Steppe talks about her time on the City Council, how she pushed the Council to own its authority and how she wants to govern on the Board of Supervisors. The fight for racial diversity in museums and other cultural institutions is not new: people of color have been fighting for inclusion in white mainstream museums for over 50 years (https://amzn.to/2udBIYZ). Dispose these efforts, change has been limited. A 2018 survey by the Mellon Foundation (https://mellon.org/media/filer_public/e5/a3/e5a373f3-697e-41e3-8f17-051587468755/sr-mellon-report-art-museum-staff-demographic-survey-01282019.pdf) found that 88% of people in museum leadership positions are white. Stephanie Cunningham (https://twitter.com/stephacunning) has a clear answer for why these white institutions aren’t changing: “When you’ve been practicing exclusion for so long, you can’t change overnight.” That’s one of the reasons why she co-founded Museum Hue (https://www.museumhue.com) with Monica Montgomery in 2015. In this episode, Cunningham traces Museum Hue (https://twitter.com/MuseumHue)’s trajectory from a small collective to a national membership-based organization (https://www.museumhue.com/join), and spells out why being a well-meaning institution is necessary but not sufficient for equity in the field. What do you do when your baby bird of an idea gets squashed? You pursue it. Museum Workers Speak was the fledgling idea of Alyssa Greenberg, Monica Montgomery, Jillian Reese, and Nina Pelaez who saw an opportunity to support the theme of social justice at the 2015 American Alliance of Museums conference. When their conference proposal was not selected by the conference organizers, these dedicated museum professionals used their astuteness in social media marketing and their superb organizational skills to hold the discussion offsite from the conference. The results are reverberating throughout the museum community. Listen this week as the Museum Workers Speak organizers discuss their next steps.
