Who gets to compete in women's sports? Since the very conception of elite athletics, there has been controversy over who qualifies for the women's category. Rose Eveleth is the host of “Tested,” a new podcast from NPR's Embedded and CBC radio that explores the practice and history of sex testing in women's sports. Eveleth follows the stories of a handful of world-class runners who have been told they can't race as women because of natural variations in their biology. In their quest to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, these women face hard choices: take drugs to alter their naturally-occurring hormones, abandon the sport that they excel at, or fight the rules made by World Athletics. We speak with Eveleth about the 100-year history of sex testing, the evolution and flaws of modern biology, and try to understand how we arrived at this convoluted moment in women's sports. Guest: Rose Eveleth, podcast host, Tested

The rules surrounding gender verification in women's sports have been discussed, debated, and scrutinized for decades, but maybe no more so than in recent years.Specifically, the issue of testosterone in women athletes, whether the athlete is transgender, or someone who has developed in a way that causes her to naturally produce atypical levels of the hormone; the question is whether higher testosterone levels, however they are achieved, give a female athlete an unfair advantage. In the new NPR and CBC podcast series Tested: A Surprising History of Women's Sports, host and science journalist Rose Eveleth traces the century-long history of sex testing in elite sports through the eyes of athletes, historians, scientists, and doctors. In the lead-up to the 2024 Olympic Games, Delaware Public Media's Kyle McKinnon sits down with Eveleth for a closer look at the issue and how Tested explores a question that goes far beyond sports: What's fair? And who decides?

Àmọ̀kẹ́ Kubat's work rises up in a dozen different overlapping directions. In North Minneapolis you'll likely hear her described as an organizer, a puppeteer, a healer, a priestess, a playwright, a counselor, a writer, a teacher, an actress, a curator, a storyteller, and more often than not, a provocateur. Bio: Amoke Kubat is an artist, weaver, sacred doll maker, and sometimes stand-up comedian, who uses her art to speak truth to power and hold a position of wellness in an America sick with inequality and inequity. In 2010, Amoke began developing her Art of Mothering workshops, which became the foundation of Yo Mama's House: a cooperative for women who are artists, mothers, activists, and healers in North Minneapolis. Amoke used her residency to support the development of Yo Mama's House by building relationships with researchers of African history, race studies, and other fields that might inform her work to reclaim Indigenous African sensibilities.Notable Mentions: Creative Community Leadership Institute (CCLI) Established in 2002 CCLI was a community arts leadership development training program developed by Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis, MN. Over its 22 year history the program supported a network of creative change agents who continue to use arts and culture to help build caring, capable, and sustainable communities. When Intermedia closed its doors in 2017 the program was suspended. The program re-emerged in 2021 under the auspices of Springboard for the Arts in St. Paul Minnesota, and Racing Magpie in Rapid City, South Dakota. The program supports the development of strong leaders capable of challenging and disrupting oppressive systems in their communities by approaching their work with a critical lens and commitment to recognizing systems of oppression and normalizing conversations about race and colonialism. CCLI serves Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota artists.North Minneapolis: Northside is one of Minneapolis' most diverse neighborhood areas. Prince spent a few important formative, guitar-strumming, piano-tapping years in the area. The local businesses, events and entrepreneurs are bringing a new life and energy to the area with a focus on community-led growth. These changes include a thriving cultural presence, often seen through food and artistic expression. Paul Wellstone: (July 21, 1944 – October 25, 2002) was an American academic, author, and politician who represented Minnesota in the United States Senate from 1991 until he was killed in a plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota, in 2002. Over the years, Wellstone worked with senators whose views were much more conservative than his, but he consistently championed the interests of the poor, the farmers, and the union workers against large banks, agribusiness, and multinational corporations.Yo Mama's House: Mission: Our philosophy and practice is to empower mothers by disrupting the devaluation of women's invisible labor and increasing the recognition of the ART of Mothering. Senator Paul Wellstone was, "the first 1960s radical elected to the U.S. Senate." In Senate Race 2002, the White House made defeating Wellstone priority #1. Karl Rove hand-picked arch Republican Norm Coleman to run against him. Despite massive funding, Coleman was trailing the popular Wellstone two weeks before election day. Then, tragedy struck. On the morning of October 25th, 2002, Wellstone was killed after a mysterious communication cut-out and crash of his small aircraft. He died alongside his wife Sheila, their daughter Marcia, three staff members, and two pilots, while trying to land at Minnesota's Eveleth airfield. CNN's Wolf Blitzer insisted to his reporter at the scene that foul weather was the lethal factor in the crash, despite the statements to the contrary from the CNN correspondent. To this day, the public tends to blame the weather.Ph.D. Professors James Fetzer and Don "Four Arrows" Jacobs present the harrowing truth. The plane was exceptionally airworthy. The weather didn't bring down Senator Wellstone. Nor were the two pilots incompetent, as the report of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would eventually claim. The facts point elsewhere. The FBI arrived at the remote rural crash scene less than two hours after the crash. Could they have known about it in advance? The FBI forbade the ambulance and fire teams to take photos. Even the AP photographer on hand was intimidated, delayed and then highly monitored. For some reason, a member of the U.S. Capitol Police Dignitary Protection Division was also present. Why did the FBI state that they were treating the site as a "crime scene" although there were "no indications of any criminal activity"? How could the FBI so very swiftly conclude and state publicly, before NTSB arrived, that there was "no evidence of terrorism" involved? Why did the NTSB search for a "black box" for a day and a half and then conclude that there hadn't been one, after all?AMERICAN ASSASSINATION confirms the worst fears of a nation. Senator Paul Wellstone was murdered. Both authors are decorated university professors. A Native American, Four Arrows (a.k.a. Dr. Don Jacobs) teaches educational leadership and is a staunch critic of US foreign policy. Dr. Jim Fetzer is a published expert on U.S. political assassinations and the logic of science.Although no one can prove exactly what happened in the events leading to Wellstone's death, these two Ph.D.s point out the official story's inconsistencies and deliberate omissions. With a methodical argument, they present evidence of an official cover-up, a compelling motive for Wellstone's assassination and advance a more likely explanation for how Senator Wellstone's plane was taken down. Their findings include new evidence and alternative hypotheses that were never considered by the NTSB:• There was never any distress call from the pilots. Communication was somehow cut off shortly before the crash.• NTSB's Carol Carmody handled the Wellstone case. A former CIA official, Carmody is a damage-control expert who handled the NTSB's investigation of the suspicious aircraft crash of Democratic Senatorial candidate Mel Carnahan, exactly two years earlier.• NTSB is legally mandated to take jurisdiction over a crash scene, yet it allowed the FBI to control the scene--and then neglected to cite the FBI's involvement in presence in the NTSB's final report.• Some witnesses heard the engines cutting out, a phenomenon not consistent with a stall.• Others reported odd cell-phone and garage-door phenomena that were taking place about the same time the plane lost both communications and control.• The NTSB's own simulations, which replicated properties like those of King Air A-100s under similar conditions, were unable to bring the plane down—even when conducted under abnormally slow speeds!• One of the members who actually signed the report, Richard Healing, admitted that they really had no idea what had caused the plane to crash.Since becoming active in this issue, local residents have contacted Professor Fetzer and related strange electronic interference in the area at the time of the crash. One experienced an odd cell-phone phenomenon with a form of static he had never heard before. Its auditory pattern appears to be similar to that of "electro-magnetic pulse" (EMP) weapons recently developed by the Pentagon to jam the computer-assisted controls of enemy aircraft.Reports of garage doors that mysteriously opened in the immediate vicinity are surfacing. And radar images from the time of the plane crashes of Senator Carnahan and of Senator Wellstone are suggestive of EMP imprints. These weapons not only jam a plane's electronics but also disable its radio communications. In the wake of the crash, 69% of Minnesoteans blamed a "GOP Conspiracy" for Wellstone's death. This book makes the case that, in this case, at least, the people had it right. In appendices to AMERICAN ASSASSINATION, Paul Wellstone's courageous stands against the rich and powerful continue to inspire us. It presents highlights from Wellstone's platform and includes his important speech, "On Iraq."His opposition to the Bush administration helps the reader to understand why the Senator was a likely target for assassination. When the reader meets Wellstone in his own words, his vision is kept alive and lives on in each of us.

Ora devono seppellire i morti. Perché? Si dice che i musulmani abbiano “violato” la segretezza delle torri, sorvolando in elicottero e scattando foto per i giornali. Anche gli studenti di medicina hanno rubato alcuni corpi. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/corgiov/message

Sheena Janson Kelley of Minneapolis watched the world premiere of “Bina's Six Apples” as soon as it opened at the Children's Theatre Company. Set in 1950 Korea, the story follows Bina on her journey to find her family during the war. On her way, the young girl encounters a number of characters — some are humorous, others have heartbreaking roles. Recommended for audiences ages 9 and up, the play was written by Lloyd Suh, inspired by his parents' experience during the Korean War; and directed by Eric Ting, Artistic Director of California Shakespeare Theater. Glen Stubbe Photography for Children's Theatre Company Lloyd Suh, "Bina's Six Apples" playwright and Olivia Lampert, who plays Bina in the Children's Theatre production. “It was thrilling to see such a robust and well-cast cast of characters,” said Kelley, who is Asian-American and a freelance casting director. “I think there are moments where audiences will also start to discover new parts of themselves through this young girl … It absolutely made me laugh and cry in the same moment. I could not recommend this show more.” The show, 75 minutes without intermission, runs through Feb. 13 at the Children's Theatre Company's Cargill Stage in Minneapolis. Patrons are required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours. Artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen of White Bear Lake loves gathering with friends around a table set with eclectic, handmade ceramics. A longtime collector, she's planning to attend the Hot Dish pottery sale at Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, Minn., this weekend. Twelve potters from Minnesota and Wisconsin — some established and some emerging — will have a range of pottery for sale, including mugs and bowls, plates and serving platters. Outside, Franconia's 50-acre sculpture garden will be open for exploring. Visitors can also gather around a bonfire or bring ice skates to enjoy the ice rink. Inside at the sale, masks are required, and Rasmussen says all the potters have committed to getting COVID tests prior to the event. The artists' work is also available online. Hot Dish runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eveleth musician Thomas Frichek of the band Horse Fzce has enjoyed watching the evolving career of fellow Iron Range musician Josh Lubovich. A Hibbing, Minn., native who now lives in Duluth, Lubovich has been a drummer for the bands Average Mammals and Heroes of Heartache, but at the end of 2021 he dropped his first solo EP of original work. Lubovich plays all the instruments and performs vocals on the indie rock recording  “ADHD.” As a 90's kid, Frichek loves Lubovich's “quiet-loud-quiet-loud” song dynamic, reminiscent of the Pixies.

Flash Forward: An Illustrated Guide to Possible (And Not So Possible) Tomorrows takes readers on a journey from speculative fiction to speculative “fact.” Producer and host of the podcast Flash Forward, Rose Eveleth poses provocative questions about our future, which are brought to life by 12 of the most imaginative comics and graphic artists at work, including Matt Lubchanksy, Sophie Goldstein, Ben Passmore, and Box Brown. Each artist chooses a subject close to their heart—Ignatz Award nominee Julia Gfrörer, for instance, will imagine a future in which robots make art—and presents their chosen future in their own style. Drawing on her interviews with experts in various fields of study, Eveleth will then report on what is complete fantasy and what is only just out of reach in insightful essays following the comics. This book introduces compelling visions of the future and vividly explores the human consequences of developing technologies. Flash Forward reveals how complicated, messy, incredible, frightening, and strange our future might be.CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS INCLUDE: Matt Lubchansky, Sophie Goldstein, Zach Weinersmith, Box Brown, Maki Naro, John Jennings, Julia Gfrörer, Chris Jones, Blue Delliquanti, Amelia Onorato, Kate Sheridan, Sophia Foster-Dimino, Ziyed Ayoub, Ben Passmore

Uncovering Metal Crafts Of The Viking Age Vikings are often associated with scenes of boats and fiercely-pitched battles. But new research, published in the journal Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, shows they also had other, calmer skills. The paper details advances in the cast metalwork of objects, such as keys and ornamental brooches, that occurred in the trading city of Ribe, Denmark in the 8th and 9th century.  Researchers analyzed samples of metal taken from a variety of metal objects found in Ribe, along with metalworking tools, crucibles, molds, and samples of metal slag. They found that while the Vikings began working in brass with a very experimental approach, they quickly standardized their production to use specific blends and alloys of metals. They also adopted more heat-resistant clays for crucibles, and made extensive use of recycling throughout their work processes.  Vana Orfanou, an European Research Commission (ERC) postdoctoral research scientist In the School of Archaeology at University College, Dublin, and lead author on the paper, joins SciFri’s Charles Bergquist to discuss the state of the art in early Scandinavian brass making.    An Illustrated Exploration Of Hypothetical Futures Futurist and Flash Forward host Rose Eveleth spends her time asking a lot of ‘what if’ questions, and then exploring the answers with experts. For example, what if human light sources forever drowned out our dark night sky? What if we relocated endangered species to save them from climate change? What if, as she asked in 2018, we saw a deadly pandemic consume the globe? With a new book that illustrates even more hypothetical futures, she poses even more far-reaching questions: What if we could change our gender like our hair color? What if we could live on as robots after our death? What if we had to pirate the basic pharmaceuticals, like insulin, that keep so many alive?  Eveleth sits down with SciFri’s John Dankosky to explore the nuances of imagining possible futures, whose choices influence what may actually happen, and why this work matters, even when she gets it wrong. Plus, what was predictable—and what was not—about the COVID-19 pandemic.    The Global Pollinating Forces Behind Your Food Importing food from one country to another also means importing the resources that went into growing that food: Nutrients. Water. Sunlight. Human labor. And the labor of the bees, butterflies, or other insects and animals that provide pollination in that country’s ecosystems. Take Brazil, for example—Europe and the United States consume a large proportion of the country’s pollinator-dependent crops, from soybeans to mangoes, avocados, and other fruits. Writing in the scientific journal Science Advances in March, an interdisciplinary team of Brazilian researchers describe a way to quantify and visualize this flow of pollinator effort, from one country to another. They created an interactive web tool that lets anyone see this pollinator flow, for a specific country or a group of countries.  Importantly, the researchers say, the model makes it clear that this flow occurs mostly from poor countries to rich ones—with economic and ecological consequences for the poorer countries. Farmers, for example, may clear more land to grow crops for export, removing valuable pollinator habitat in the process. Those same farmers might then see their yields drop as pollinators die off, thanks to loss of habitat. Producer Christie Taylor talks to two members of the research team, economist Felipe Deodato da Silva e Silva, and ecologist Luisa Carvalheiro, about the importance of considering pollinators in global food trade, and how better informed policy and consumer choices might help preserve threatened biodiversity.  This segment is part of our spring SciFri Book Club. Gassen joins host Tim Hanlon to discuss the: Origins of his WHA fanaticism (sparked by childhood memories of Indianapolis Racers games); Wayward (and illustrative) journeys of teams like the Jersey Knights (née New York Raiders/Golden Blades, then San Diego Mariners) and the Calgary Cowboys (birthed as the Miami Screaming Eagles, converted into the Blazers of Philadelphia, then of Vancouver, before saddling up anew in the Stampede City); Unmatched dominance of the Winnipeg Jets; and Ongoing hunt for the Hall of Fame’s holy grail of artifacts – the makeshift WHA championship trophy hoisted by the league’s New England Whalers in 1973, in lieu of the yet-to-be-completed AVCO World Trophy. She holds a Doctor of Optometry degree and a Bachelor of Science degree and is also a WP Elevation Certified Digital Business Consultant. Show  Notes: “The first thing you need to know is what your ideal client typically types into Google…make sure you put those words on your website.” This strong piece of advice comes from Digital Marketing Strategist, Dr. Sandi Eleveth. “It is becoming more important to have a website that is optimized so that others can find you on the internet, and that they know what you are selling and what action to take when the go to your website”, she added further. Getting to know who your ideal customers are is necessary to optimize your website to serve them. It is important to know that Google is the number 1 search engine and Youtube is the second, which is also owned by Google. Dr. Sandi explained that having a WordPress website makes it a lot easier for someone who has never done website design. WordPress is being used by about 25% of the websites around the world. It is alarming to see so many businesses listing information about themselves on their sites. Dr. Sandi insisted that the ‘About Page' should also include information about your ideal client. You have to write your content answering the client's question of ‘What's in it for me?” Knowing whether your website indexed so that bots can find it is key. It is very important to get your content out there. She stated convincingly, “Consistency is Queen if content is King.” Dr. Sandi shared many tips to help you optimize your website including: *Start creating videos and posting to your YouTube channel *Do live streams *Make sure that there is an obvious call to action *Optimize the images that you add to the website RESOURCE TO PEAK YOUR PERFORMANCE FREE eBook: Kissyourweb.com/getfreeebook Is your site indexed? Popaganda is back! In this episode, we’re going to be talking about an emotion you’ve probably heard a lot about lately: empathy. The way we talk about it, it’s almost like a superpower: it’s like we want to believe that the cure to political divisiveness, racism, and even war lies in the act of imagining exactly how someone else feels. But is empathy really going to save the world? First, Dr. Carolyn Pedwell, associate professor in Cultural Studies at the University of Kent, explains how different people define “empathy” and use it to achieve various, and sometimes opposing, goals. One of those parties is the virtual reality industry, and tech journalist Rose Eveleth explains the potentials and pitfalls of empathic VR experiences. Then we go into another sort of empathy experience with cartoonist Ben Passmore, whose comic and animated short, “Your Black Friend,” tackles empathy in a different, sharper way. Finally, we talk with scholar and activist Frances Lee (of the Bitch 50!) about how we can practice empathy better: in a way that acknowledges the humanity of other people without making it all about ourselves. This episode of Popaganda is also our new host’s first with us! Soleil’s excited to jump on board and we hope you’re looking forward to all that she’ll be bringing to the table, too.

The Opperman Report
American Assassination: The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone- Four Arrows (aka Don Jacobs)

The Opperman Report

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2016 13:42

When the reader meets Wellstone in his own words, his vision is kept alive and lives on in each of us.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
