In his new book, Resources, Power, and Nation Building: Afghanistan and the Promise of Minerals, Dr. Haroon Hakimi analyzes how critical and strategic minerals can either underpin nation building efforts or intensify conflicts. Drawing on his doctoral research at the Institute of World Politics, this lecture examines lessons from U.S. nation building, China's resource strategy, and the emerging global competition over critical minerals that is reshaping power in the 21st century. Dr. Haroon Hakimi is an academic practitioner with more than fifteen years of experience across media, public policy, research, teaching, and diplomacy. His career bridges government service and scholarly research, focusing on the connections between energy and mineral security, national resilience, and international stability. A former diplomat and senior government official, Dr. Hakimi, has advised on foreign affairs, resource policy, and strategic communications at the national and international levels. He has served as Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Tourism of Afghanistan, and Head of Chancery and Latin America Affairs at the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, D.C. Currently, Dr. Hakimi leads the Energy Security and Minerals Program at the America–Eurasia Center and serves as a Research Analyst at the Global Policy Institute, focusing on the evolving role of critical and rare earth minerals in the global energy transition. His research explores how energy resources shape national policy design and the architecture of state-building in post-conflict and emerging economies. **Learn more about IWP graduate programs: https://www.iwp.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/ ***Make a gift to IWP: https://wl.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E231090&id=3

Originally uploaded March 23rd, reloaded April 15th. Jeffrey Mosher welcomes back Karley Abramson, Author and Lead analyst for health policy, Citizen Research Council of Michigan Online sports betting has grown quickly in Michigan. From a policy and economic perspective, how big has this industry become in just the past few years? Your research suggests problem gambling behaviors are increasing. What signs are policymakers and communities seeing that indicate the human costs are rising? Many people view sports betting as entertainment. How can policymakers balance protecting consumers while still allowing a legal industry to operate? You mention policy options to reduce harm. What are one or two practical steps states like Michigan could take to better protect people from gambling addiction? With nearly a quarter of Americans having a sports betting account, what should business leaders, educators, or community organizations understand about the broader social and economic impacts of this trend? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Policy Options to Hedge the Worsening Human Costs of Online Sports Betting In a Nutshell: Online sports betting has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry in Michigan over the last six years. Problem gambling behaviors have increased due to ubiquitous sports betting apps, leading to financial harm, health issues, and safety concerns. Policymakers have options to mitigate the harm caused by gambling addiction while also respecting people's rights to engage with sports betting as an entertainment product. Many states, including Michigan, have legalized online gambling and sports betting in the last decade, which has led to a proliferation of the industry and a significant economic impact, including tax revenues. Last month, Governor Whitmer presented her Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget recommendations, which included a series of revenue increases aimed at shoring up Medicaid in the wake of changes to federal funding. One of those proposed revenue increases included “updating the state's internet gaming, sports betting, and online gaming tax structure” to raise approximately $190 million. In the six years since online sports betting became legal in Michigan, the industry has grown substantially, providing entertainment to many people and tax revenue to support public services. While many people engage with online sports betting responsibly, a portion of the population is susceptible to problematic gambling behaviors that harm themselves and others. The state has a variety of policy options to blunt some of the negative consequences of online sports betting without abolishing the market for everyone. Alone, or in conjunction with federal action, the state can regulate the industry to limit some of the more dangerous aspects of online sports betting, such as prop-bets and credit card deposits. It can also work toward better support for people with gambling addictions by opening up grants and insurance coverage for treatment, as well as working to coordinate between gaming regulation and health agencies. Karley Abramson joined the Research Council in 2022 as a Research Associate focusing on health policy. Previously, Karley was a nonpartisan Research Analyst at the Michigan Legislative Service Bureau where she specialized in the policy areas of public health, human services, education, civil rights, and family law. Karley has worked as a research fellow for various state and national organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the ACLU of Michigan. She is a three-time Wolverine with a bachelor's degree in sociology, a master's of public health, and a juris doctor from the University of Michigan.

⬥EPISODE NOTES⬥ The security operations center has always been a battleground of volume, velocity, and human endurance. Analysts have long faced the impossible math of too many alerts, too few hours, and too much at stake. For years, the industry promised automation would change that equation -- but the technology was never quite ready to deliver. That moment, according to Richard Stiennon, has now arrived. Stiennon, Chief Research Analyst at IT-Harvest, has spent two decades tracking every corner of the cybersecurity vendor landscape. His data now shows more than 61 net-new SOC automation vendors -- companies that did not exist a few years ago -- built from the ground up to replace the work of tier-one, tier-two, and tier-three analysts. Some of these vendors launched in January 2024 and reached $1 million in ARR by April. By the end of 2025, several were reporting $3 million ARR. These are not incremental improvements. They represent a structural shift in how security operations can be run. What makes this generation of SOC automation different from earlier SIEM and SOAR tooling is scope and autonomy. The value proposition is blunt: 100% alert triage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week -- with automated case building, threat investigation, and response actions including machine isolation and reimaging. Stiennon points to a CISO he met, speaking under Chatham House rules, who disclosed that a large enterprise had already eliminated its entire human SOC team. He predicts that disclosure will go public before long. The conversation also explores the business context question that security leaders frequently wrestle with: are these AI-driven SOC tools operating with a narrow cyber mandate, potentially optimizing for security metrics at the expense of business continuity? Stiennon pushes back on that concern, arguing that large language models are already trained on the full breadth of human knowledge -- they understand business context at a level that exceeds most organizations' internal documentation. The more pressing risk, he suggests, is not that AI will act outside business intent, but that organizations will move too slowly to benefit. Waiting six months for a proof-of-concept report while spending a million dollars on human SOC operations is not due diligence -- it is opportunity cost. The conversation also touches on data privacy in AI-driven security, the role of federated learning and fully homomorphic encryption for compliance-sensitive environments, and what security leaders can do today to evaluate and accelerate their own adoption timeline. Stiennon will be at RSA Conference 2026 with his new book, Guardians of the Machine Age: Why AI Security Will Define Digital Defense, continuing to make the case for a field that is moving faster than most organizations are prepared to acknowledge. ⬥GUEST⬥ Richard Stiennon, Chief Research Analyst at IT-Harvest | Website: https://it-harvest.com/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiennon/ ⬥HOST⬥ Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine, Studio C60, and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com/ ⬥RESOURCES⬥ IT-Harvest | https://it-harvest.com/ Richard Stiennon on LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiennon/ Guardians of the Machine Age: Why AI Security Will Define Digital Defense (Richard Stiennon) | Available via IT-Harvest and major booksellers RSAC Conference 2026 Coverage on ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/rsac-2026-conference-san-francisco-usa-cybersecurity-event-infosec-conference-coverage The Future of Cybersecurity Newsletter | https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/7108625890296614912/ More Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast episodes | https://www.seanmartin.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcast Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast on YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllS9aVGdiakVss9u7xgYDKYq ⬥ADDITIONAL INFORMATION⬥ On Podcast: https://www.seanmartin.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcast On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllS9aVGdiakVss9u7xgYDKYq Newsletter: https://itspm.ag/future-of-cybersecurity Contact Sean: https://www.seanmartin.com/ ⬥KEYWORDS⬥ richard stiennon, it-harvest, sean martin, soc automation, ai security, security operations center, threat detection, autonomous response, alert triage, security operations, cybersecurity vendors, ai agents, large language models, federated learning, siem, soar, redefining cybersecurity, cybersecurity podcast, redefining cybersecurity podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. John Batchelor speaks with Jack Burnham, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracy, regarding the Chinese artificial intelligence model Deep Seek. Burnham warns that despite public claims regarding the software's cost efficiency and technical effectiveness, Deep Seek functions strategically as a "back door" providing Chinese leadership direct access to American users' data, devices, and computational infrastructure, posing profound national security risks including potential espionage, intellectual property theft, and surveillance capabilities that exceed publicly disclosed functionalities. 1942

My guest on the show today is Jacob Stephan, Senior Research Analyst at Lake Street Capital Markets. He recently authored a “Crypto Industry” white paper, and I invited him on to break it down. In this episode, Jacob lays out why digital assets have crossed into institutional viability—a “normalization phase” driven by clearer regulation, enterprise-grade infrastructure, and real corporate adoption. We discuss the internet-style adoption curve (crypto at ~7% global penetration), why regulation is the cornerstone of investability (FIT 21 progress, the new FASB fair-value accounting, and pending clarity in the U.S.), and how stablecoins—“dollars with an API”—are emerging as the killer app with multi-trillion settlement volumes. Jacob walks through concrete examples from Visa, Mastercard, and JPMorgan moving beyond pilots to on-chain settlement, and contrasts stablecoins' payment utility with Bitcoin's treasury/“digital gold” role. We also cover the nuanced risks: centralization at the access layer (custody, cloud, compliance), state-by-state regulatory differences, speculative micro-cap “crypto treasury” raises, and why bipartisan momentum reduces—but doesn't eliminate—policy risk. Finally, Jacob shares the “picks and shovels” angle—cloud, fintech/payments, and semiconductors—as scalable ways to participate in the build-out without direct token exposure, and why even low single-digit institutional allocations could materially move the asset class. We discussed a number of crypto currencies in today's episode. Jacob owns SOL, SUI and BTC, and for full disclosure, I also own BTC. Regarding rare earths, China is now employing the US "playbook," setting up a licensing structure rather than a full trade cessation. He emphasizes that building a complete rare earth supply chain outside of China, especially refining capacity, may realistically take seven to ten years. In technology, Beijing is pushing for domestic self-sufficiency in AI infrastructure, partly driven by paranoia that imported chips may contain backdoors or vulnerabilities. My guest on the show today is Doug Porter, Portfolio Manager and Senior Research Analysts at Acuitas Investments. Doug and his team recently published a new white paper titled, "The Case for MicroCap." For most of you listening in, you're already a diehard MicroCap-per, and we've all succumbed to the altar to the merits of hunting in inefficient markets. Having said that, I invited Doug on here to not only remind us why we are here, why we hunt for the best investment ideas in our neck of the woods, but more importantly, in my opinion, to showcase why in 2025, the case for investing in MicroCaps has merit as a place to build wealth and allocate capital. Doug breaks down the structural inefficiencies and long-term opportunity in the micro-cap equity market — a segment that remains largely ignored by big institutions, but continues to be fertile ground for alpha generation. We discuss why micro-caps have historically outperformed in 84% of rolling 30-year periods, the critical role of active management in filtering out the riskiest names, and why Doug believes we're in the early innings of a new cycle that favors smaller companies. Doug also explains how “Stable Operators” — profitable, cash-generating niche businesses — are among the most compelling yet overlooked opportunities in today's market, and why a dedicated micro-cap allocation can offer diversification, M&A upside, and even a liquid alternative to private equity. Finally, we cover Acuitas's approach to identifying skilled micro-cap managers across the globe — and how this ecosystem of small, research-driven funds continues to uncover value where few others are looking. Was it a coordinated attack exploiting Binance's oracles? A failure of market structure? Or simply too much leverage waiting for a trigger? Or some combination of the three? The group breaks down how liquidity vanished, why hedges failed, how this flash crash echoed the worst moments of traditional markets, and why the industry urgently needs reform before it happens again. Data centers for AI will need to embrace flexibility if our electricity system is going to cope. How can large loads support the grid?

AI is adding to US electricity consumption at a pace not seen in decades. That demand growth is creating new strains on the grid in many parts of the country. But what if AI could instead help keep the system running? Varun Sivaram is a founder & CEO of Emerald AI and a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He says that far from undermining the grid, AI could actually save it. If we can enable AI data centers to provide flexibility during times peak stress, they can become a powerful ally for reliable, affordable, and clean electricity.Earlier this year, the Energy Gang hosted a conversation with Tyler Norris of Duke University, author of an influential paper assessing the potential for large flexible loads in the US electricity system. He argued that if grid operators could ask data centers to dial back the power consumption when the system is under strain, those new facilities could get online faster without waiting for long transmission and generation upgrades. In effect, flexibility is like a fast-track pass: by allowing short reductions in consumption during peak stress, the grid can handle more demand and data centers can connect sooner. That's the theory. In this show we talk about how to make it a reality. To explain how data center flexibility works, and will work in the future, Varun joins host Ed Crooks, regular guest Amy Myers Jaffe, Director of NYU's Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab, and resident investment expert Shanu Mathew, Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst at Lazard Asset Management. How can data center developers, operators and customers create flexible loads? Spread computing tasks across multiple sites, pause the less time-critical ones during grid stress, and use smarter software and batteries to smooth short spikes. The gang discuss early real-world tests with utilities and tech companies, and why some regions are considering rules that let them temporarily reduce power to big users rather than risk neighborhood blackouts. Is this all hype? Some of the claims being made are running ahead of what is actually being achieved in the industry today. And even as chips get more efficient, demand for AI is growing even faster. But Varun wants to run more pilots, reward flexibility with quicker hookups, and build toward a “virtual power plant” made of data centers that can respond in milliseconds. If the irresistible force of AI development is to overcome the immovable object of power grid capacity, that is the kind of innovation that is going to be needed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Between 2020 and 2024, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) tracked over $312 billion in suspicious activity linked to these networks. Meizlish suggests the Chinese Communist Party might be aware of, or even permit, some of this activity, especially if it benefits its members.
