He graduated from Tulane University in 1990 and received anti-racism training from the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, both in New Orleans. And he is the host of the podcast Speak Out with Tim Wise.  Key Takeaways Woke is being aware of ongoing systemic injustice and being concerned about altering it Racism is a systemic force and not about “good” or “bad” people Building a collaborative space requires constantly checking in with the things you don't know — ask questions that make space for others' perspectives Some of the most radical anti-racism work is listening and supporting the needs of Black people so they can organize and lead When you mess up, sit with the criticism, acknowledge your wrongdoing, apologize and keep moving forward Keep holding truth to power so you understand how and why racism works in America today, then you can reconcile with your community Authenticity is acknowledging that we are all people caught in a bad system: will you change the system or will the system change you? In our last episode, we discussed the value of diverse perspectives. We wrap up our William A. Adams interview with ideas for solving diversity issues. We have seen where he has made great strides in raising awareness. However, we do not wrap up our conversation without offering solutions to this problem. It makes no sense to complain about a problem without suggesting solutions. A Blueprint For Solving Diversity Issues I enjoy the idea of "tech bros" that William brings up. This is a concept we see in all sorts of groups and cliques. Gatekeepers in the group need to be won over before we can become a part of it. We can focus on winning them over in those situations or create a different group. That new group allows us to build momentum and credibility to win over gatekeepers better than one person alone. Nevertheless, William broke those barriers on his own and now uses those experiences to guide the next generation to be seen for what they bring to the table instead of what has been defined as valuable to employers. He gets it all to a simple point. Diversity loses its value if we try to whitewash the diversity out and force hires to conform to our experience. A Little Background William A. Adam is an award-winning D&I innovator, engineering trailblazer, and philanthropist. After rolling out critical XML code globally in many of Microsoft's core products, he was named the first Technical Advisor to the CTO, Kevin Scott. Plenty Of Accolades As co-founder of the LEAP apprenticeship program – named Microsoft's D&I Program of the Year in 2020 – William helped launch the training of more than 26 engineering cohorts worldwide. Today, 98% of LEAP participants work at Microsoft or other high-tech companies. His most recent collaboration is with the leadership of the U.S. Virgin Islands to establish and train a technical talent pool and build critical technology infrastructure. Early in his 30-year career in software engineering, he was one of the first Black entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and was recently profiled by the Computer History Museum. Through his company, Adamation, William developed mission-critical custom enterprise apps for Steve Jobs' NeXT computers and pioneered a network instant messaging service purchased by the CIA. He's been awarded two patents. Where Is He Now? Today, in addition to his role at Microsoft, William is the philanthropic founder of The EV3NT, a collaborative, community-based hackathon designed to use technology to address critical real-world needs. William is busy as a husband and father of three when he's not tinkering with bits and bytes. He builds kitchen cabinets, knits, and tries to recapture the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle in India. His Web Site: https://www.william-a-adams.com

This summer, which has been dubbed the Summer of George Floyd after his death at the hands of a police officer, the voices I’ve heard from those that work in the student housing industry have two major themes: 1. Internal reflection about unconscious biases about race, gender, and sexual orientation that may determine decisions and reactions that we were not aware of. 2. How will this impact our student residents, and how can we make them feel safe and supported. It’s time we (as an industry) start talking about these things. We may not have the answers, but we have to start the discussion and shine a light on these issues. This discussion is the next step SHI is taking to continue this discussion. In a previous session, we talked about ways the industry needs to prepare itself for a fall semester that is not only unique because of the pandemic but also how "our students" will likely react to politically charged rhetoric this election season. For today’s discussion, we want to focus on “our people” – the employees, our supervisors, or executive leadership, even ownership structures and what is on our minds about changes that should be made to provide a more diverse and inclusive industry. When Imani Hill arrived at her new job, she learned that rather than a co-teaching position, she would be responsible for teaching six black boys with Individualized Educational Plans (IEP). The boys were currently spending their days in a conference room with the Assistant Principal. When Ms. Hill arrived, they were moved to a classroom where she was to be their teacher. The students' IEPs were not provided to her initially, nor was she given any guidance about the students' levels of functioning or what they needed to be working on. When Ms. Hill did receive copies of the IEPs, she saw that they were out of date. She also saw that the move from regular class placement to the segregated special education class was not documented, nor was there documentation of communication about this with the students' parents. In mid-January, Ms. Hill was asked to update the IEPs, but to backdate them to December. She refused. In this Facebook Live session, Imoni Hill will tell her story of working to assure that these boys received updated testing, updated IEPs, and the supports and services they needed and deserved. She will share the push back and retaliation she received from the school administration. As Ms. Hill tells the story of these six boys, Cheryl Poe, AASR's Director of Diversity Issues and the Founder and Executive Director of Advocating4Kids, Inc., will identify each action the school took that was against federal regulations. Ms. Poe and Ms. Hill will provide an update on what is currently happening in the efforts to assure that these six boys, who are referred to as "the Chesapeake Six" receive. Cheryl will share her experience working with the state Department of Education before and after Virginia received notification from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) that the State was not exercising general supervisory and monitoring responsibilities in accordance with federal requirements. Listen: Highlight to Tweet: “The choirs are singing from the inside out. ” - Dr. Eugene Rogers Show Notes: The “singing Conductor” is a process by which one approaches making the choral art come alive. Singing Conductors lead choirs that sing from the inside out. They are completely aware of the technical aspects of choral music, but also deeply rooted in the understanding of the work. There are 4 characteristics of the Singing Conductor: they have a heightened sensitivity to building sound they emphasize sound for sound’s sake, and also sound that is directly connected to the context of the piece they often see technical issues as opportunities for vocal warm ups they place a high emphasis on communication and expression Think about your process. Look at conductors you admire, and figure out their approach. Dr. Eugene Rogers gives you permission to listen to your gut. Whether it’s a move, a job, or even a bold programming choice, you can take risks. Some of them will pay off. Some of them will leave you stranded in New York City with no job and no car. But you will grow from all of them. Listen: Highlight to Tweet: “Choral music was deeply inside of me. I had a real passion for it, no matter what.” - Dr. Eugene Rogers Show Notes: Dr. Rogers decided to dedicate his life to music during a piano lesson while he was a high school student. The idea that he could make a living as a musician took root and never wavered. He originally thought he would be a singer. But conducting had a natural ease to it that compelled him to study further. Conducting allows him to most fully express his musical vision. Working for the Boys Choir of Harlem proved to be both a wonderful and a trying experience. Intending to stay in New York until he retired, Eugene was blindsided when the organization announced that because of financial difficulties they would no longer be able to pay him. But the experience reinforced for him that his life would always be centered on music. Always listen to your gut! Even when an experience doesn’t turn out the way you expect, you can still learn from it. Bio: Recognized as a leading conductor, pedagogue, and lecturer, Eugene Rogers has appeared throughout the United States as well as in Africa, Canada, China, Singapore, England, Portugal, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Mexico, Spain, and Italy. Recently, Rogers received the Sphinx Medal of Excellence for his commitment to issues of social justice and leadership and conducted the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club in Salt Lake City, Utah at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).  In December 2014, the Naxos recording of Milhaud's monumental L'Orestie d'Eschyle, on which Rogers served as a chorus master, was nominated for a 2015 GRAMMY® Award ("Best Opera Recording"). Rogers is currently associate director of choirs at U-M where he teaches undergraduate conducting, conducts the Men's Glee Club and the University Choir, and is the faculty director of the MPulse Vocal Arts Institute, a national high school summer program. The Scott Thompson Podcast   Yesterday, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale promised to toughen the requirements on terror suspects who are subject to restrictive peace bonds by saying that de-radicalization counselling should be a part of this. However, RCMP documents unsealed yesterday show that they feared that restricting would-be radicals would backfire.   Guest: Elliot Tepper, Emeritus Professor of Political science with expertise in Immigration, Terrorism and Diversity Issues in Canada, Carleton University.   With numbers slipping for Trump, the Republican nominee has announced another change up in his campaign leadership. Will this change up fix things for Trump or will it do absolutely nothing?   Guest: Paul Hamilton , Associate Professor of Comparative Politics in the Department of Political Science, Brock University. Scott got another phone number for someone running a CRA phone scam. Scott called the number on-air and it was the same responder as last time! Unlike last time, they took the bait! Here's what happens when you call a phone scammer and get hooked.
