Roman Yampolskiy vs Emad Mostaque: I Was The Only Optimist

The man who open-sourced the most-used AI image model in history sat down with the man who has spent a decade proving superintelligence cannot be controlled. Brian set up a debate. What emerged was something more unsettling than any debate. Roman Yampolskiy is the computer scientist who coined the term AI safety and author of AI: Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Uncontrollable. Emad Mostaque is the co-founder of Stable Diffusion and the only AI CEO who signed the pause letter. He now says he doesn't know how a pause could work. Yampolskiy thinks that is the only option left. The question underneath everything is simple: if you have a 50% chance of wiping out civilization and you build it anyway, what are you actually doing? We cover what AI safety researchers actually think the danger is, why nobody has published a paper, filed a patent, or shipped a prototype for controlling a superintelligence, what the Qwen weights being out means for the pause argument, and why Mostaque thinks swarm intelligence is the most dangerous and most unpredictable risk vector we have. What you'll hear: -Why both guests think P(doom) tells you less than you'd hope -What it means that no company, no lab, and no team has a patent on controlling superintelligence -Why the models the public receives are slightly lobotomized -The difference between an AI swarm and the ASI everyone is debating -Why giving every psychopath access to a cutting-edge intelligence weapon is incoherent safety strategy -What it would actually take to update Yampolskiy's assessment “We either do it, or we die. There is nothing for you to gain by doing it.” — Roman Yampolskiy CHAPTERS 00:00 A debate that wasn't a debate 00:36 Turing test, AGI, superintelligence: where are we? 02:02 The open source argument nobody wins 03:32 Pause frontier AI forever. On the 81st anniversary of the US's nuclear attack on Hiroshima, host Bert Zipperer is in conversation with Mari Faines of the Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists and Steve Leeper of Physicians for Social Responsibility. They discuss all the human, ecological, and moral harms perpetuated by powers committed to a nuclear status quo. Faines writes, “There is no question the nuclear status quo upheld since 1945 is rooted in colonial systems of power and White supremacy that started centuries ago. But nuclear security scholarship that explicitly makes this connection and examines the harm resulting from this socio-political, cultural, economic, and ecological history is still incredibly limited.” Faines draws connections between militarism and justice movements and says that our current moment requires an intersectional approach to crises, local and existential.  Leeper advocates for a “peace culture” as opposed to the “war culture” he sees as driving nuclear proliferation and Trump's MAGA movement. The path of peace, says Leeper, leads to universal health and well being, and that goes for all humanity and the non-human world. He will be speaking at a Lanterns for Peace event tonight, sponsored by Physicians for Social Responsibility. They also discuss the doomsday clock that is currently set to 85 seconds until midnight, how there's no such thing as a small nuclear weapon, nuclear power, and how to change the kitchen table conversation about nuclear weapons.  Mari Faines serves as a Board Fellow for the Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists. Just prior, Faines served as a strategic advisor and policy expert at the U.S. Department of State working on AUKUS, the trilateral security agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Prior to joining the State Department, she spent five years in the United Kingdom completing graduate work in Peace and Security studies, while working as a project manager for an international solutions corporation. Upon returning to the United States, she continued working at the intersection of nuclear nonproliferation policy and social justice issues. Faines has written for a multitude of publications and was a former podcast host. She remains engaged in global policy issues by volunteering with various advocacy organizations and has been recognized for many of these contributions over the past decade. Faines holds a Master's of Science (MSc) from SOAS University of London and a Bachelor's from Colgate University. Steve Leeper has spent about half of his 78 years in Japan. He began working as UN representative of Mayors for Peace in 2002. This led to his appointment in 2007 as chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation. He stepped down in 2013 to be a professor at Hiroshima Jogakuin University. He shifted from professor to visiting professor in 2015. He is co-founder of Peace Culture Village in Hiroshima and PEAC Institute in Montclair, NJ, Detroit, MI, and Atlanta, GA. He is a recipient of the Academia Prize from Kyoto University, the Tanimoto Peace Prize (Hiroshima's highest peace award), and an honorary doctorate from Hiroshima Jogakuin University. His publications include Hiroshima Resolution (bilingual), Nihon ga Sekai wo Suku (Japanese), Hiroshima wo Tsutaetai America-jin (Japanese), and Kakuheiki Haizetsu e no Michi (Japanese). The US and Saudi Arabia have reportedly signed a landmark deal that could pave the way for a Saudi nuclear programme, sparking fears it could eventually allow the Gulf kingdom to develop its own nuclear weapon.President Donald Trump has denied that the agreement permits Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium, and says any deal is dependent on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords and recognising Israel, a move many experts say remains unlikely.Meanwhile, tensions in the region have escalated after Houthi attacks on Saudi ships in the Bab el Mandab strait pushed oil prices higher. Trump has warned that further attacks could trigger “major military punishment” against Iran and the Houthis. On this episode of The Fourcast, Matt Frei is joined by Channel 4 News foreign affairs correspondent Jonathan Rugman to examine the US-Saudi nuclear deal, the growing confrontation with the Houthis, and what it means for the future of the Middle East.

The Living Philosophy

Benjamin Studebaker is a political theorist with a PhD from Cambridge whose work cuts against the grain of almost every revolutionary and reformist story on offer. He is the author of The Chronic Crisis of American Democracy: The Way Is Shut (2023) and Legitimacy in Liberal Democracies (2024).His central claim is that the Western democracies have become "embedded democracies" — systems in which citizens can no longer imagine an alternative worth sacrificing for, and so remain trapped in a low, stable, and deeply frustrating equilibrium.________________In this conversation, I sit down with Benjamin to explore his diagnosis of the chronic crisis at the heart of liberal democracy. We begin with the idea of the "embedded democracy" and the restricted imaginarium left behind by the catastrophes of the twentieth century, before working through why the culture war functions as a manageable — even useful — form of disagreement, one that dissipates energy rather than threatening the order. Benjamin unpacks his distinction between personal and impersonal hypocrisy, his four levels of legitimacy (perfect, full, minimal and liminal), and the concept of "enclavism": the retreat into faith, family, fandoms and futurism when politics feels futile. We range across Don Quixote and quixotic socialism, the Lord of the Rings image behind his book's subtitle, the problem of capital mobility, NATO defence spending and the Americanisation of European politics, and why a networked, nuclear-armed, drone-fought world makes the old theories of revolutionary change look obsolete. It's a sobering, clarifying conversation for anyone trying to understand why our politics feels simultaneously so turbulent and so stuck.________________You can find Benjamin's work at:Website: https://benjaminstudebaker.comAbout / all links: https://benjaminstudebaker.com/aboutSubstack: https://bmstudebaker.substack.com/________________⏳ Timestamps:00:00 Intro1:29 What is an "embedded democracy"? A few years ago a satellite speeding through the Van Allen belt in earth orbit raised concerns that it may include a nuclear weapon. An explosion in that orbit would take out much of our global space infrastructure. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 specifically prohibits such a thing, but it has proven technologically impossible to verify and monitor over the decades. Tom Whipple is joined by Prof Areg Danagoulian, Associate Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT to explore a clever concept to spot such a thermonuclear device in orbit that he has published in this month's Nature journal. Also on the show, Professor of Science Communications Gareth Mitchell discusses how the way toddlers waddle can teach robots how to play football, and how to win. He also examines a new global database on food consumption which aims to help answer some of the world's most pressing questions on our diets and the environment. Could exposing election fraud trigger far more than political consequences? Maria Zack, founder of Nations in Action, joins Michael Jaco for an explosive discussion about election integrity, government corruption, and the claims she says have been shared with her regarding threats designed to prevent the truth from coming out. Maria explains why she believes America is facing a coordinated global effort to undermine constitutional government, why election transparency remains one of the nation's most important issues, and why she argues citizens must continue demanding accountability. Michael and Maria also discuss reports and allegations surrounding nuclear threats, geopolitical pressure, China's influence, the Deep State, and what they believe is at stake if election fraud is fully investigated. Throughout the conversation, Maria shares why she believes courage, transparency, and citizen involvement remain essential to preserving the republic. Whether you agree or disagree with the views presented, this conversation explores one perspective on election integrity, government accountability, and the future of the United States.

In the middle of the twentieth century, the existential threat posed by nuclear weapons seemed inevitable. The number of countries with nukes was climbing rapidly, and the idea of stopping the nuclear arms race seemed like a pipe dream.  But that's exactly what happened. Over the course of 60 years, nations around the world agreed to nuclear red lines, slowdowns, and even disarmament. How did this happen? Largely because of technology.  The biggest obstacle to agreeing on nuclear red lines was that adversaries couldn't trust any promise the other made. They needed to know the number of warheads, the amount of enriched uranium, or whether a nuclear device was for a weapon or a power plant. None of that was possible until we built the tech needed to verify those things.  Today, we're in a similar situation with AI. For adversaries like the United States and China to agree on reasonable AI red lines on issues like bioweapons, cyber hacking, or the risk of recursive self-improvement, they first need to be able to trust each other. We urgently need to build the verification technology that would make that trust possible.  In this episode, Tristan sits down with two experts in this field to discuss the kinds of verification technology we need for AI, the challenges of building it, and the world it could unlock if we do. Tim Fist is the Director of Emerging Technology Policy at the Institute for Progress, and Janet Egan is Senior Fellow and Deputy Director for the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for New American Security.
