This week, we're reading chapters 13-20 of The Dream Thieves through the theme of compromise. There's a lot going on as the Gangsey discover Cabeswater has disappeared. Declan has to save the day, which doesn't go over well with Ronan. And Ronan, for his sins, brings back a pair of night terrors from his dreams, which he and Gansey have to kill. The Gangsey head out to the Barns to bury the nightmare's body and there they discover a world of Niall Lynch's sleeping dreams… including Ronan's mother. In case you missed it, we've already read the first book in the series, The Raven Boys, and you can listen here. We're still actively recording this season so if you have thoughts or questions let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com, and we'll answer them as we go! You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 15 October 2022. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. Hyundai Automotive South Africa (HASA) will probably record a 15% drop in new-vehicle sales in 2020, says CEO Niall Lynch. This is better than the 25% to 30% drop expected in the overall domestic new-vehicle market, he adds. HASA has increased its market share in the dealer passenger car market by 2.1%, to 10.9%, year-to-end-September, notes Lynch, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. “For two months we even outsold Toyota.” Hyundai’s share of the total market (excluding the medium and heavy truck segments) stood at 7% in September, up from 5.7% in the same month last year, notes Lynch. He is hopeful the launch of the new Grand i10 hatchback will further boost sales for the imported Korean brand. The widespread impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has, however, also taken its toll on the normally popular small car segment of the market. HASA sales and operations director Stanley Anderson believes Grand i10 sales could reach around 250 to 300 units a month, down from 350 units in a normal market. He says the five-door hatch segment in South Africa, which makes up 30% of the total car, bakkie and van market, has seen a 32.6% drop in sales year-to-end-August, to 54 650 units. The third generation Grand i10, imported from India, is more spacious, more premium and boasts more technology, adds Anderson. The vehicle is Hyundai’s biggest seller in the local market. Just shy of 49 300 units of the previous generation model were sold in South Africa from 2014 to this year. Apart from its new looks, all Grand i10 versions are now equipped with an infotainment system with a 6.2-inch touch screen, which displays Apple CarPlay or Android Auto when connected to a smart phone. The range makes use of a 998 cc three-cylinder engine and a slightly bigger 1 197 cc Kappa 4-cylinder engine. The 1-litre engine – used in the Motion and Fluid derivatives – delivers 49 kW peak power at 5 500 r/min, and 94 Nm maximum torque at 3 500 r/min, while its 1.2-litre sibling – which drives two of the Fluid versions – reaches its power peak of 61 kW at 6 000 r/min and maximum torque of 114 Nm at 4 000 r/min. The 1-litre engine delivers power via a five-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels. There is also a choice of a four-speed automatic gearbox for both the 1-litre and 1.2-litre Motion and Fluid derivatives. All new Grand i10 versions come with driver and front passenger airbags and Isofix child seat attachments on the rear seats. An advanced braking system and electronic brake distribution are also standard features in all derivatives. Pricing starts at R191000 for the manual, and R216900 for the automatic. A seven-year/200 000 km manufacturer’s warranty is part of the package, as well as a one-year/15 000 km service plan and five-year/150 000 km roadside assistance programme.

Young adult novelist McConaghy (the Chronicles of Kaya series) makes her adult debut with the clunky chronicle of Franny Stone, a troubled woman who follows a flock of endangered Arctic terns on what is believed to be their final migration home. Franny’s mother, who vanished when Franny was seven, warned her that women in their family are unable to resist the urge to wander. While working at a university in Galway, she meets ornithologist Niall Lynch, who immediately declares they’ll spend their lives together, and they implausibly marry. Unfortunately, Franny’s overwhelming desire to travel, her sorrow over their stillborn daughter, and a sleepwalking episode in which she chokes Niall drive a wedge in their marriage. Niall had always longed to track the terns, and Franny does so by convincing a fishing boat captain that she can help him find fish in exchange for transportation. Despite the ragtag crew’s initial distrust of Franny, she becomes part of the team. McConaghy divulges more about Franny’s dark past as she writes Niall letters and reflects on their relationship, as well as the true nature of her quest. While McConaghy’s plot is engaging, her writing can be a heavy-handed distraction (“out flies my soul, sucked through my pores”). Lovers of ornithology and intense drama will find what they need in this uneven tale
