Most educational material for kids ends up being either too dry or too confusing, leaving both children and parents feeling stuck. It's frustrating when a topic feels important, but every attempt to explain it just leads to glazed-over eyes. The magic happens when a story can turn something dense into something fun—when kids are laughing, asking questions, and actually remembering what they learned. A good children's book doesn't just teach—it creates a shared moment between adult and child that sticks far beyond the last page. Lisa M. Bell blends creativity with clarity, turning complex ideas into stories kids actually enjoy. From solar energy to school adventures, her books simplify big topics without talking down to young readers. After leaving a sales job behind, she found her stride as a full-time author, proving it's never too late to rewrite your own story. Today, she shares how she crafts engaging narratives, markets her work, and navigates the publishing world. Her mission is to make learning fun—and help kids see the world through curious, confident eyes. Stay tuned! Resources: Lisa Bell | Check out my children's books & health & travel articles.

Lisa M. Gomez is the Assistant Secretary of the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) in the U.S. Department of Labor (www.dol.gov/agencies/ebsa). She brought with her a particular concern about the mental health of American men, especially minority men. Although I wasn't taken aback to hear that AANHPI men are the least likely to seek professional help, I nevertheless shared her desire to move the needle in the other direction. She outlines how EBSA's staff are eager to help all manner of employees access their health insurance to cover or significantly defray the cost of getting help from mental health professionals. As I mentioned at the end of our conversationm, I will be posting an episode next week that centers around the 2022 film "Dealing With Dad," to bring attention to the occurence of depression in Asian American families.

In this episode Pamela and Laurie discuss the Trump indictment, DeSantis, and the conservative “resolution” to the crisis of neoliberalism through the Culture Wars. In our main segment, Platypus members from Vienna, Berlin, Melbourne and Chicago reflect on the Platypus panel, "A Century of Critical Theory: The Legacy of György Lukács,” (April 1st, 2023), the closing plenary of the 15th Platypus International Convention. The centenary marking the publication of his magnum opus, History and Class Consciousness: Studies in Marxist Dialectics (1923), offers the occasion to ask: What is the meaning of Lukács and HCC today? Over the last 100 years, various claims have been made of HCC. On the one hand, it is said to have inaugurated “Western Marxism” and set the foundation for the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School. On the other, people have accused it of giving philosophical justifications for terroristic or opportunistic tendencies within Marxism–Leninism. We asked our panelists to consider the following: What is the relationship between political practice and theory that Lukács articulated in the revolutionary period of 1919–1925, based on his close reading of Lenin and Luxemburg? What in his critique of reification and defense of Marxist orthodoxy did the later Lukács disavow? What can we make of Lukács's legacy today? How have we received his investigation and elaboration of the problematic of Marxism? What are the essential issues raised for our time?
