This week we're interviewing Michael Gira: leader, vocalist, guitarist, and main songwriter for the legendary Swans. Swans' latest album, entitled Birthing, releases on May 30 and is reported by Gira to be the band's final large-sounding, expansive album. Michael was generous enough to have a phone conversation with Mike and Tom to talk all about it, as well as his creative process as a whole. Swans are a band like no other and if you haven't already, check out all of our episodes chronicling each of their studio albums.
fWotD Episode 2929: Veiqia Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 12 May 2025, is Veiqia.Veiqia (Fijian [βɛi̯.ᵑɡi.a]), or Weniqia, is a female tattooing practice in Fiji. The term refers to both the practice and to the tattoos themselves. Women or adolescent girls who have reached puberty may be tattooed in the groin and buttocks area by older female tattooing specialists called dauveiqia or daubati. The practice was common prior to the arrival in the 1830s of Christian missionaries who discouraged it. The practice declined in the late nineteenth century, so that by 1908 to 1910, there was a single remaining tattooist recorded as being active; she was called Rabali. The practice was revived in the twenty-first century, led by the work of a collective of artists known as The Veiqia Project. Museum collections of veiqia artefacts are found in several Western museum collections, as well as the Fiji Museum. In Fijian culture, the tattoos were considered to heighten a women's beauty. Veiqia were seen as attractive and could be an important factor that enabled a woman to marry. If she died without them, they would be painted on her body after death so her spirit could proceed into the afterlife. Receiving veiqia was highly ritualised, with many regional variations. Preparation for the process could include abstinence from food or from sexual relations, or inducing vomiting to purge the body. The process of tattooing was closely associated with the gift of a young woman's first liku (fringed skirt) to wear once their veiqia was complete. Special caves called qara ni veiqia were historically used for the ritual. Traditional medicines given to the young women varied from region to region and some were part of preparation for the ritual. To break the skin, some tools used included stingray spines, lemon thorns or shark teeth. Inks were made from Acacia richii or Kauri pine. Motifs for tattoos included: turtles and wandering tattlers, pottery and basketwork. The tattooists, known as dauveiqia (also daubati) exchanged the service for masi (barkcloth), tabua (polished sperm whale teeth) or liku. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:58 UTC on Monday, 12 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Veiqia on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.

According to Vālmīki's Sanskrit Rāmāyaṇa (early centuries CE), Śambūka was practicing severe acts of austerity to enter heaven. In engaging in these acts as a Śūdra, Śambūka was in violation of class- and caste-based societal norms prescribed exclusively by the ruling and religious elite. Rāma, the hero of the Rāmāyaṇa epic, is dispatched to kill Śambūka, whose transgression is said to be the cause of a young Brahmin's death. The works surveyed in Śambūka's Death Toll: A History of Motives and Motifs in an Evolving Rāmāyaṇa Narrative (Anthem Press, 2023) this study include numerous works originating in Hindu, Jain, Dalit and non-Brahmin communities while spanning the period from Śambūka's first appearance in the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa through to the present day. The book follows the Śambūka episode chronologically across its entire history--approximately two millennia--to illuminate the social, religious, legal, and artistic connections that span the entire range of the Rāmāyaṇa's influence and its place throughout various phases of Indian history and social revolution. All links: https://linktr.ee/TheRightPodcast Summary of previous discussions: Summarizing the previous two videos, we delved into the intricate interplay between narrative, perception, and ideology within political discourse. We explored the nuanced distinctions between anti-imperialism, anti-authoritarianism, and leftist perspectives, recognizing that they may not always align seamlessly. We then explored themes that have persisted from the 2014 Gaza War to the present conflict. In this session we discussed how the actions of the Trump administration accelerated and escalated instability in the region. We examined various responses to the administration's unilateralism, as well as religious interpretations of these actions. Additionally, we explored why the left often excludes religion from their analysis and why incorporating it can be necessary. Finally, we compared the discourse of a conservative Rabbi with social media posts made by some pro-Palestinian leftists to examine Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.
Bruce Springsteen's song “The Wall” was inspired, in large part, by a musician he idolized in his youth. Walter Cichon was the front man for a band called the Motifs, who were taking the New Jersey shore by storm in mid-to-late 1960's. Walter's voice was forever silenced in Vietnam when he was just 21 years old, but his indomitable spirit lives on through those who knew him — including, to a surprising degree, The Boss himself. Kevin Cole is an artist, a sculptor, a muralist, creative, Teacher of the Year, philanthropist, self-believer, death threat survivor, and an incredibly genuine human being. His works are featured in 5,000 collections around the world, including the Atlanta Airport and City Hall, and pursuing his dream has led him to places he never thought he'd see. Kevin describes his art as sound boards for human experiences, which is why I'm so drawn to them. They capture moments in time and tell a real story. They're thought provoking. And they're about people and their stories, which is exactly what we're doing here. When Atlanta hosted the Olympics in 1996, it was Kevin who was tapped by the Coca-Cola company to create a 15-story mural that would introduce Atlanta to the world. It's truly an iconic piece of work. You can see a picture of it here. In his own words, he describes what that process was like and why it had to be completed in a unique way and the challenges that arose. He also shares why he credits his mom for becoming an artist, reveals what it was like during the beginning of his artist's journey, what it looked and felt like, and ultimately how he carved a life for himself with his creations and built his business. Later, he shares his creative process and how he taps into creator mode, sheds some light on the intersection of commercialization and art, a wild story about how he narrowly missed 9/11, how to get out of a creative slump, and finally, his realest talk. Thank you, Kevin, for the time, the conversation, and everything you shared. All love baby. You can follow him on Instagram @kevincole2378, check out his website kevincoleart.com to see more of his work, and if you enjoy this episode, please drop a rating and a review wherever you listen to podcasts, and share it with two other people. Put ‘em on. Help me grow this show and keep building up this community.

Not that you need to make a choice based on what people feel." — Nate Kadlac (19:04)Design Tips from Experts: "A designer's secret is that most of us never use pure black or pure white.
