The aim of this discussion is to publicize both the challenge and potential solution for the integration of secure supply chain risk management content into conventional software engineering programs. The discipline of software engineering typically does not teach students how to ensure that the code produced and sold in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products hasn't been compromised during the sourcing process. We propose a comprehensive and standard process based on established best practice principles that can provide the basis to address the secure sourcing of COTS products. About the speaker: Dr. Dan Shoemaker received a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1978. He taught at Michigan State University and then moved to the Business School at the University of Detroit Mercy to Chair their Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS). He attended the organizational roll-out of the discipline of software engineering at the Carnegie-Mellon University Software Engineering Institute in the fall of 1987. From that, he developed and taught a SEI-based software engineering curriculum as a separate degree program to the MBA within the College. During that time, Dr. Shoemaker's specific areas of scholarship, publication, and teaching centered on the processes of the SWEBOK, specifically specification, SQA, and SCM/sustainment. Dr. Shoemaker's transition into cybersecurity came after UDM was designated the 39th Center of Academic Excellence by the NSA/DHS at West Point in 2004. His research concentrated on the strategic architectural aspects of cybersecurity system design and implementation, as well as software assurance. He was the Chair of Workforce Training and Education for the DHS/DoD Software Assurance initiative (2007-2010), and he was one of the three authors of the Common Body of Knowledge to Produce, Acquire, and Sustain Software (2006). He was also a subject matter expert for NICE (2009 and NICE II – 2010-11). Dr. Shoemaker was also an SME for the CSEC 2017 (Human Security). This exposure led to a grant to develop curricula for software assurance and the founding of the Center for Cybersecurity and Intelligence Studies, where he currently resides. Dr. Shoemaker's final significant grant was from the DoD to develop a curriculum and teaching and course material for Secure Acquisition (in conjunction with the Institute for Defense Analysis and the National Defense University). He has published 14 books in the field, ranging from Cyber Resilience (CRC Press) to the CSSLP All-In-One (McGraw-Hill). His latest book, "Teaching Cyber Security" (Taylor and Francis), is aimed at K-12 teachers.

In this episode of Life Science Success, my guest is Rajeev Sehgal. Rajeev is the Sr. Director of Informatics at Azenta Life Sciences. Rajeev is responsible for development and execution of Informatics strategy including product management, development, SQA, delivery, and support. Rajeev Sehgal discusses his experience with developing strategies that can be executed effectively. He highlights the importance of not only thinking about strategy but also having a clear understanding of how to execute it. Sehgal emphasizes the significance of focusing on the process rather than solely on the results. He notes that if the steps are right and repeatable, the results will show up eventually. Sehgal advises new leaders to be kind to themselves and not put too much pressure on themselves to deliver right away, especially in a new role or organization. He expresses concern about people hiding behind processes to stop progress and analysis paralysis, where people want more data than necessary before making a decision. Sehgal finds inspiration in doing something that will have a patient impact, working with colleagues who are doing amazing work, and seeing his children grow. Key takeaways: Strategies must lead to good execution paths for their value to be realized. Focusing on the process and making it repeatable is key to achieving results. New leaders should be kind to themselves and not put too much pressure on themselves to deliver right away. People should not hide behind processes to stop progress, and analysis paralysis should be avoided. Doing something that will have a patient impact and working with colleagues who are doing amazing work can be inspiring.

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I wanted to know if listing past offers (as a brand name signal) on your resume will help or hurt you during the resume screening and interview stages? I am an SQA engineer at one of the FAANGS, and I feel inadequate in my position; I get the gist QAs are not valued much. Essentially I got into this domain early in my career, and I find moving out of this role difficult. My long-term goal is to get into a PM role. Is that even possible, or should I first switch to the Dev role to build a better foundation? Help me. I am lost.

Join Rex Black and Rob Sabourin for a lively back-and-forth on the topic followed by a Q&A opportunity. Rob observes that, today, many software testers are challenged to quickly identify product quality concerns amidst turbulent project contexts. Business, technology, and organizational factors change frequently. Testers are forced to continuously adapt, to think on their feet, and to provide stakeholders, team members and even system users with meaningful feedback about quality concerns, and operational readiness. There are many different test automation technologies which can facilitate the control and observation of software. Rob notes that, among his customers, test automation technologies are mainly limited to implementing automated verification checks, as part of regression suites, in continuous integration and deployment processes. This webinar will address the problem of how test automation tools, methods, and techniques can be effectively used to facilitate, and improve the efficiency of, exploratory testing. Robert Sabourin has more than thirty-eight years of management experience, leading teams of software development professionals. A well-respected member of the software engineering community, Robert has managed, trained, mentored, and coached thousands of top professionals in the field. He frequently speaks at conferences and writes on software engineering, SQA, testing, management, and internationalization. The author of I am a Bug! the popular software testing children’s book, Robert is an adjunct professor of Software Engineering at McGill University. Robert is the principal consultant (&president/janitor) of AmiBug.Com, Inc.

I’m so sad to say that this is the final episode in our ‘You Won’t Believe What We’ve Seen’ mini-series, in partnership with SQA services. But over the course of these four episodes we’ve had a blast! We’ve chatted to some inspirational people, learned a lot and heard some amazing stories – we really can't believe what they’ve seen! I hope you’ve enjoyed the series just as much as I have and don’t forget, you can still catch up on any episodes you might’ve missed HERE. In last week’s episode ‘High Stakes’, we were joined by father and son team Jim and Mike McKay to tackle the ever-changing landscape of technology. We talked about the latest technological advances in the industry and really did a deep dive into the importance of quality, right from the outset, and how it’s achieved through honesty, communication, collaboration and partnership. And today, last but definitely not least, we’re headed to the multi-billion-dollar world of beauty. Mike McKay is joining us one last time alongside the incredible Ashley Goldberg, Executive Director of Quality and Operational Excellence at Merz North America. We’re taking a closer look at the changing face of the beauty industry, the rise of social media and the impact of influencers, and why quality is more important than ever. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [01.03] Introducing Mike McKay. [02.19] Introducing Ashley Goldberg. [03.46] SQA’s key beauty industry partnerships, from Estee Lauder to Colgate-Palmolive. [04.18] An introduction to Merz. [05.32] How SQA’s early partnership with Colgate-Palmolive helped the business take off. “I went from zero sales to several hundred thousand, by employing two or three hundred people in three different cities and shipping over 38,000 tubes of toothpaste!” (MMK) [11.40] The importance of relationship-building in every stage – from raw materials to manufacturing to supply chain – to ensure quality, particularly in the start-up space. [15.26] The relationship between Merz and SQA, and the importance of teamwork. “They’re going to come in as an honest partner… to support it, augment it, and ultimately make sure you have the ability to build a robust supply chain.” (AG) [19.36] Why it’s essential to ensure quality at source. “Ensuring that your entire supply chain and all of your partners have the same values and integrity you have for your product is so important, because ultimately your customer is what matters.” (AG) [23.14] Why cost-cutting strategies aren’t always the best approach, particularly for quality. “Is the risk really worth it? What’s the cost of customer dissatisfaction?” (MMK) [26.25] How consumer behavior is driving supply chain optimization. [29.30] How social media, communication speed and influencer impact can have a very positive, or negative, effect on your brand – making quality even more important. [31.29] SQA’s ‘Quality Is’ campaign and how it helps customers to ensure quality is an accessible and better understood topic. [35.08] Why designing quality into the supply chain from the beginning is going to be vital to the future of the beauty industry. Don't forget to check it out if you missed it! Today, we’re taking on the complex world of technology and Mike McKay is joined by his Father, Chairman of SQA, Jim McKay. They’re going to be exploring some of the latest technological advances in the industry and explaining how quality is so closely linked to honesty, communication, collaboration and partnership. And how, if you don’t have a focus on quality from the beginning, the impact on today’s technology-driven and dependent society is potentially devastating. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [01.03] Introducing Mike McKay. It's time for business and the rest of the public and private sectors to stand up and support the young people who have been treated appallingly this year by those supposed to treat them fairly. If you share 'Come And Work In Stem' and 'NoWrongPath' type content but stay silent when young people and their teachers are mistreated like this, you risk being regarded as patronising and anything you say about young people lacks credibility. Stand up and make your voice heard. The 2020 exam results downgrade is unacceptable. Relying on the appeals process is not enough. We want an apology from the SQA and Education Minister John Swinney now and action taken to sort things out.

During this episode of Tech Qualified, Tristan Pelligrino and Justin Brown chat with Jennifer Rathgaber, the Senior Marketing Manager at SQA (Software Quality Associates). Jennifer talks about her tenure with a B2B SaaS company focused on associations/nonprofits and her transition to a role at SQA. With SQA, Jennifer is now focused on modernizing a business which has been relatively stagnant on the marketing side of things for almost twenty years. Highlights Jennifer talks about her past experiences in the marketing world - recently transitioning from a B2B SaaS company. In previous roles, Jennifer has worn several different hats - responsible for demand generation, content development, digital marketing, branding, and every other leg of marketing that you can think of. Jennifer discusses how SQA is primarily a services firm and it helps other organizations transform digitally. SQA is predominantly a regional company, focused mostly in the New England area. For the most part, SQA has experienced stagnant growth as of late and there are initiatives in place now to optimize for growth. Before arriving, SQA really had a passive marketing strategy, where an agency was driving the team and Jennifer came in to really kick off demand generation. Right now, Jennifer is crafting the customer journey and still working through the process. SQA actually has two sides of their business - services and then staff augmentation where they are responsible for recruiting and placing specific roles. SQA is using a variety of pillar pieces to then use for a foundation of shorter pieces of content - webinars, panel discussions and longer white papers. Jennifer has found that it’s important to weave in thought leadership content in a variety of situations - from PPC to email outreach. Jennifer has leveraged internal subject matter experts to get a sense of the ideal customer at SQA. Many internal resources have been buyers of their types of services in the past. Key Points Jennifer compares and contrasts services with B2B SaaS, “In the B2B SaaS space, that was a little more black and white, where if you hit somebody with an email, they raise their hand saying, yes, I want a free demo - that's an MQL. If they go to an SDR, then they go to the sales team. The services space I'm finding is a lot more different. The services space is more of a long game.” Jennifer mentioned “I have to stop being so focused on MQLs and be more focused on the relationships that we're building. Whether it be through marketing or through sales or a combination of both...” Resources Jennifer Rathgaber: LinkedIn SQA: Website Motion: Ultimate Thought Leadership Course for B2B Tech Companies
