Here we are, at the end of all things. It's time to say goodbye to the Gansey as we read chapters 62 to the epilogue of The Raven King through the theme of promise this week. In this section, Ronan is being unmade and Adam, unable to bear it, scries and gets some useful advice from Persephone. Meanwhile, Gansey accepts that there is no time to save himself, and asks Blue to kiss him. She does, and he dies. It's pretty terrible. Henry compells them to action, and Adam suggests asking Cabeswater to die for Gansey. Together, they work with the last of Ronan's dreamt forest, and Gansey is remade. In the epilogue, Adam confronts his parents for the last time; Gansey, Blue, and Henry receive a graduation gift from Ronan for their gap year; and Ronan begins to dream. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 25 November 2023. Here we are again, at the end of another season! It always comes around too fast. This week, we read chapters 84-epilogue of Any Way The Wind Blows through the theme of love and wrap up our time with this book. It's the perfect theme to end our journey with this wonderful series! In this section, Lady Ruth and Jamie invite Simon and Baz over for a celebration lunch where Simon commits a sword faux pas... or does he? Turns out Simon's picked up the family Excalibur, which can only be moved by a Salisbury, which means that Simon Snow is Lucy's lost child. Finally, a resolution! Penny takes Shepard home for dinner - they like each other and it's very great and cute. And we get a glimpse of Agatha's future - she's moved to Watford where she keeps the goats, and she's content with trading in her wand for a walking stick. You can find the show notes on the website. We are once again returning after an extended absence, and we are so excited to finally get to discuss GREYWAREN by Maggie Stiefvater! We talk multiple-series arcs, plots that run on vibes and vibes only, and Margaret making fools of us all. SPOILER WARNING: We talk pretty in-depth about all of the books in Maggie's connected RAVEN CYCLE and DREAMER books, so if you haven't finished both series and you wish to remain unspoiled, we recommend you wait on this one and come back when you're done. My review of the books from The Dreamer Trilogy, the spinoff from The Raven Cycle series!
Well, who can believe it, we've yet again reached the end of a book before we were ready for it! This week, we read chapters 48-epilogue of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of discovery and wrap up our journey with this wonderful book. In this section, Ronan and Blue discover a lake that is also a mirror, and Blue uses her mirror magic to cross it. Blue finds her mom, and Artemus, and leads them almost out of the third sleeper's lair before Piper, one of her minions, and Mr Gray (tied up) appears. Mayhem ensues. Our favourites manage to get free as the cave collapses around them, trapping Piper and her minion underground... But then Neeve appears and convinces Piper to open the tomb. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 10 June 2023. Thanks for listening! We'll be back with a re-share of one of our earlier one shots next week - keep an eye out, it's a film we both really love! Brace yourself for big feelings cause this week, we're reading chapters 38-42 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of heartbreak! In this section, Adam is facing his father's hearing alone–until Gansey and Ronan show up to support him, unasked but not unwelcome. Adam takes Blue and Noah along to the national park to repair the ley line. Later, he meets with Persephone, but she's not really there–she's strayed too far–and when they find her, she's dead. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. You can find the show notes on the website. Pretty grim topic this week but one that comes up often enough for these characters, sadly – we're reading chapters 33-37 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of violence. In this section, the Greenmantles go spelunking. Piper continues to be weird and it's freaking Colin out! Gwenllian, meanwhile, is wreaking noisy havoc at 300 Fox Way, but the Gray Man asks her to sing her story, and she does. She shows Blue that they're the same, they're mirrors. If things aren't weird and spooky enough, there's a scaffolding failure at Aglionby and where Adam should have been killed, he's been perfectly protected–Cabeswater again. Heads up: Jenn D's story today talks about corporal punishment for kids, and we talk about the ramifications of growing up in countries with normalized violence If that's not your jam, the story starts at 3:55 minutes in, and we move on to chapter summaries at 11:25. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. You can find the show notes on the website. We're all about hospitality this week as we read chapters 28-32 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue. In this section, it's raining blood and there's a comet and they've rescued an ancient madwoman who just happens to be Gwenllian, illegitimate daughter of Owen Glendower. They trundle her back to 300 Fox Way, where Persephone has been waiting for her. Malory tells Blue a little bit about Gansey before. Ronan and Adam go to church to dream up terrible evidence in order to implicate Colin Greenmantle in a series of disgusting crimes. Adam's father turns up at his apartment and tries to intimidate him, then hurt him, but Cabeswater intervenes. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. We're also still actively recording this season so if you have thoughts or questions let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com, and we'll answer them as we go! This week, we're reading chapters 22-27 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of suffering and boy, do we suffer with these characters. In this section, Blue makes another attempt to get into Jesse Dittley's cave and Noah goes very dark and scary. Back at 300 Fox Way, Blue mentions Jesse Dittley is on the church watch list and Adam immediately divines that one of them is on it, too. Later, Gansey takes Blue for a night time drive, and it's magical… until Henry Cheng sideswipes it. The Gangsey discover a tomb in the Dittley cave. Inside you are two wolves… or something! This week, we're reading chapters 17-21 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue. In this section, Blue finds Jesse Dittley's name on the church watch list. Gansey has begun waiting for Blue to call… which she does. We finally meet Henry Cheng but Gansey, while polite, doesn't have much time for him. Adam and Ronan visit the Barns, where Ronan tells Adam what he's been working on: bringing the dream out into the world. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. What does it mean to have faith? In a greater power, in your friends, in yourself? That's our theme this week as we read chapters 11-16 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue. In this section, the boys tell the women of 300 Fox Way about Greenmantle. Blue joins Gansey and Malory in search of a cave, and they meet Jesse Dittley. Adam and Ronan fight about the future Adam wants and Ronan despises. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. Wasting no time having the deep conversations, this week we talk about family as we read chapters 6-10 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. In this section, Blue's first day back in school is pretty terrible–she's reminded again of the impossibility of dreaming beyond her means, and then Noah goes nuts and supernaturally breaks things in her guidance counsellor's office. A creepy, smarmy dude comes to 300 Fox Way to threaten them, but is thwarted when he doesn't find Maura to specifically threaten. He turns out to be the new Latin teacher at Aglionby, and also, the Gray Man's former employer, Colin Greenmantle. You can check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. We're starting how we mean to go on (in our feelings) by reading the prologue to chapter 5 through the theme of loss. And we're picking up the overarching theme of connection again! Exactly what the title says!
I discuss how I read this series when I needed it most and now that I'm years past it, I can see how much it helped me. Gansey 4 life.
The season 2 finale is upon us and we're rounding off the season by revisiting a favourite of both of ours, the first book in Maggie Stiefvater's ‘The Raven Cycle', ‘The Raven Boys'. We adore this book and had to squeeze it in the line-up. Making it the last book of the season means we're ending on a real high. We know ‘The Raven Boys' is magical realism, but can it also be considered dark academia?
Ayanna Howard is a science fiction author and editor. She currently lives in the woods with her guinea pigs and a menagerie of other small animals. She's the author of the Raven Cycle, a Young Adult series about four friends who are forced to abandon their peaceful life on an uninhabited island to journey to the center of the world. In this episode, we discuss her book
New season baby! We are very excited to get stuck into The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, the first book in The Raven Cycle. Our overarching theme is connection and we'll carry this through for the whole series – and yes, we will eventually read all of them. This week, we introduce the text through the theme of destiny as we read the prologue to chapter 4. Can't wait to spend this time with Blue, Gansey, Noah, Ronan and Adam. When it comes to books, friendships and relationships are literally the heart of the story. It's why we read, right? Anna and Celine gathered together all their favorite relationships and are sharing them! There are spoilers, nothing about the end of the book, and they list the books a the beginning of the episode as well as letting you know if they'll share spoilers during the episode! Welcome to Intermezzode Take1, aka how do we do this whole remote recording thing and what the heck happened to a whole year?!?! Join us as we stumble through what it takes to record in two different places, answer questions about when we might come back with Season 3, talk about how we got through 2020, and recommend a few things that we enjoyed and/or helped us cope. We also dunk on South Dakota a little too much (Sorry, SD!), are baffled by the thought of a whole town in one building (Hi, Whittier!), update Shannon on the status of the TRC TV show, hint at the plans we had for covering Maggie’s YA graphic novel Swamp Thing, and debate whether the “X” in XOXO is a hug or a kiss. NOTE: We apologize for the quality of Shannon’s audio, we do believe we have worked out the kinks for future recordings! Hey friends! It has been a hot minute! But I'm back and better than ever with the first episode where I cover a series, The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. This isn't just your regular run of the mill young adult fantasy series. There's magic, curses, a hitman, a sleeping Welsh king, sassy tarot readers, a love triangle - oh wait, maybe it is. Follow along as I dive into the series and the gang of rag tag teens that find themselves crossing ley lines and forging unbreakable bonds to find the magical sleeping Welsh king who is thought to be hidden somewhere in their sleepy small town. Also, this is my favorite series so I may be a bit biased in saying that it is the best and most magical collection of books I have ever read. Thank you so, so, so much for listening! Love you all so much! YA novels are often the best for fast-paced and plot-driven fantasy. In today’s podcast, Jacque shares three fantasy series that will entertain both teens and adult readers: The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness, and Legends of Orisha by Tomi Adeyme.
Acclaimed author, Maggie Stiefvater describes Call Down the Hawk, the first book in a brand-new trilogy, as a “big, strange, weird novel” full of all of the things she likes in both novels and life. This includes art, magic, music, and mythology. Call Down the Hawk follows Ronan Lynch, a character who can take things out of his dreams and bring them into real life, and Jordan Hennessy, an artist, a thief, and maybe something else. If you're a fan of young-adult literature, you're probably familiar with Maggie's work. She is the New York Times best-selling author of The Raven Cycle, The Shiver Trilogy, and The Scorpio Races. On this episode, we'll talk with her and award-winning author Scott Westerfeld about what it's like to expand a fictional universe for eager fans. Scott is the author of The Uglies Series, The Leviathan Trilogy, and Impostors, among many other titles. Special thanks: * Music composed by Lucas Elliot Eberl * Produced and edited by Bridget Benjamin * Associate Produced by Mackenzie Cutruzzula * Sound mix and recording by Daniel Jordan * *Suzanne McCabe is the Editor of Scholastic Kids Press
Maggie Stiefvater is the keeper of a host of odd obsessions, threading her bestselling fantasy novels with vicious water horses, sleeping Welsh royalty, ley lines, and liminal spaces. She's the author of books including the Raven Cycle, which continues this fall with the first installment of the Dreamer trilogy, Call Down the Hawk. In it she'll further explore the Lynch brothers and the dark gift of dreaming, taking objects from your unconscious life into your waking one. I talked to Stiefvater about her early ambitions, books that feel like a fever dream, and why Call Down the Hawk is THE book for her.
This week, we're talking myths, magic and metaphors with bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater, whose newest novel,All the Crooked Saints, will be in stores on October 10. Maggie is joined in the studio by her editor, David Levithan, as well as some extra special guests: her dad and her brother! Later in the episode, we'll also talk with Booklist editor Daniel Kraus about Booklist's 50 Best YA Books of All Time list, which just so happens to include Maggie's New York Times bestselling series The Raven Cycle.
