In this episode Esther Armah and Myrna discuss her Emotional Justice framework. In this conversation, they get into the courage that racial healing actually requires, and who it asks the most of. Esther is a journalist, playwright, and global emotional justice advocate joining us from Accra, Ghana. Drawing on her encounters with Winnie Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Nchiki Biko — the widow of Steve Biko who famously refused to forgive the officers who murdered her husband at the TRC — Esther unpacks why reconciliation is not liberation language, why Nelson Mandela's message of forgiveness placed an impossible emotional burden on Black people, and what the emotional work of white people actually looks like. Myrna brings her own reckoning: years of fawning for white audiences, softening the language of colonial trauma, and what it finally cost her to name it. This is Part 1. Esther will be back. Esther Armah is a Ghanaian-British journalist, playwright, radio host, and creator of the Emotional Justice framework. She is the author of Emotional Justice: A Roadmap for Racial Healing. She joins this episode from Accra, Ghana. IN THIS EPISODE — How Esther's mother's broken silence about the 1966 Ghana coup gave birth to Emotional Justice — and the insight that "you cannot PhD your way out of untreated trauma" — What Winnie Mandela told Esther before she interviewed Desmond Tutu: listen to the women first — Nchiki Biko's refusal to forgive at the TRC, the murder of Steve Biko, and why her "no" cracked open a new understanding of racialized forgiveness — Why reconciliation bypasses justice and repair — and how Canada's TRC has replicated the same harm as South Africa's — Nelson Mandela's forgiveness narrative: a political act of its time, and why it seeded a dangerous legacy — The emotional work that belongs to white people — Intimate Reckoning, Emotional Patriarchy, and the difference between proximity to power and actual allyship — The language of whiteness: how all of us are taught to center whiteness, and the emotional work of letting it go — Myrna's own reckoning: years of fawning for white audiences and what it took to name it — The three Cs — Courage, Comfort, and Convenience — and how we each choose to contribute to or resist systems of harm — Why you cannot self-care your way towards liberation, and what communal care actually requires — Isolation vs. solitude — why hiding can be part of healing, and why isolation is the death of liberation — Wellness in the Face of Warfare: what it means to choose wellness when your health is considered a threat to whiteness QUOTES "You cannot PhD your way out of untreated trauma. There is no amount of education that will replace the emotional work we all have to do." — Esther Armah "Reconciliation is not liberation language. It is conciliatory language designed to sustain how whiteness comforts and soothes itself." — Esther Armah "In Canada, your superpower is to mask your violence in polite neutrality and somehow describe it as no longer violence. We see that — because that's part of British whiteness." — Esther Armah PEOPLE MENTIONED — Winnie Mandela — South African anti-apartheid activist — Archbishop Desmond Tutu — South African human rights leader — Nchiki Biko — widow of Steve Biko; her refusal to forgive at the TRC was pivotal to Esther's framework — Nelson Mandela — discussed in relation to racialized forgiveness — Resmaa Menakem — referenced by Myrna on having skin in the game — Kwame Nkrumah — first independent president of Ghana; quoted on political and economic liberation RESOURCES Emotional Justice: A Roadmap for Racial Healing by Esther Armah - You can buy it here: https://www.amazon.ca/Emotional-Justice-Roadmap-Racial-Healing/dp/1523003367 estherarmah.com https://www.theaiej.com/ myrnamccallum.co You can learn more about Myrna and her work at: www.myrnamccallum.ca

This episode was recorded on a sunny spring afternoon, on the banks of the St.Marys River, Baawaating (place of the rapids), also known as Sault Saint Marie. We were incredibly grateful to speak with Dr. Dan Longboat, who is Turtle Clan of the Mohawk Nation, originally from Six Nations community on the Grand River. Dan helped create some of the OG Indigenous Education programs in Canada, weaving together Indigenous and Western Knowledge Systems at Trent University. We learned about many of the OG Indigenous Scholars of Turtle Island, their contributions to UNDRIP and TRC and much more. Dan shared our responsibility to prepare for the swingback of the pendulum, through rethinking energy and extraction, through giving back to the land and knowledges, and remembering the teachings of those OG scholars and our Ancestors (both human, Land, and more then human). Remember to take a moment to learn from the strawberries, they share with us the importance of connection, love, and reciprocity.Check out the SHOWNOTES and for some extensive educational resources and links with this episode.Appreciation to Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig for hosting us, to Dr. Melanie Goodchild for all your support and the introduction to Uncle Dan, and CASC (Canadian Association for Science Centres) for supporting the gathering at Baawaating. Thanks to Emil Starlight, THE talented Multimedia Podcast Producer of Limelight Multimedia. Families of the TRC victims have welcomed the ruling as the High Court has dismissed the bid by former presidents Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki to remove Sisi Khampepe from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission inquiry. The court found the application procedurally flawed and invalid, while also ordering both former presidents to pay legal costs, clearing the way for the commission's work to continue without further delay. Mention Texas and you might picture the Wild West — flat, dusty highways, and tumbleweeds rolling by. But head to Austin, tucked into the Hill Country, and you'll find something different. Right in the heart of the city flows Lady Bird Lake, a stretch of the Colorado River that has become a daily gathering place for runners, paddlers, and rowers alike. On its banks sits a true Austin institution: Texas Rowing Center. For owner Matt Knifton, this place isn't just a business, it's where his story unfolded. His ties to the lake reach back to the 1980s, and over the decades he's become not just an owner, but a steward — someone who has quietly shaped the culture of rowing in Austin, protected access to the water, and ensured that this shoreline remains a starting line for generations to come. In this conversation, we also explore how Matt is thinking about the future — and what thoughtful, sustainable growth looks like for a place so deeply rooted in community. . Bullet Points Shawn - Evaluating the Benefits of Modular Suppressors The article discusses the trend of modular suppressors in the firearms community, highlighting their ability to adapt and optimize sound suppression for multiple firearms through interchangeable parts. While they offer benefits such as versatility and efficiency, some users express concerns about complexity and performance trade-offs. The increasing popularity of modular suppressors since 2019 reflects a broader acceptance within the gun community, particularly for those looking to maximize their suppressor use across different weapons while navigating regulatory considerations. TRC hosts the ACT Expo – America's premier clean commercial vehicle show – and helps fleets find the funding and resources they need to decarbonize. On today's episode of Quick Charge, we've got TRC's Sr. VP of incentives Joe Annotti here to give us a 30,000 ft view of the road ahead. We've also got a sneak peek at the agenda for the 2026 ACT Expo in Las Vegas, which is set to spotlight the full spectrum of technologies driving fleet advancement today, from digital and connected solutions to low-carbon and zero-emission vehicles. More than 12,000 attendees are expected from the fleet, shipping, OEM, utility, infrastructure, energy, and telematics sectors will be on hand, with a few dealers and policymakers to spice things up. But, of course, the biggest buzzwords will be AI, autonomy, software-defined vehicles, and incentive-stacking – all of which might mean something else to a commercial fleet than it does to a soccer dad. "The accelerated development and deployment of the range of digital solutions – on top of the increasingly wide array of powertrain technologies and fuel choices available to today's commercial customers – is truly astounding," says Erik Neandross, President of the Clean Transportation Solutions group at TRC, producers of ACT Expo. "It is an incredibly exciting time in our industry, but one that we also know can be dizzying for fleets to keep up with it all." come together for four days of peer-to-peer education, real-world case studies, and direct access to the people and solutions shaping the industry I've included a few articles from last year's ACT Expo in the show notes, below, as well as some links that we reference in the interview. How One Practice Grew EBITDA by 300% with Expert Consulting Guest: Lisa Lickstein — Award-Winning Practice Owner & Visionary Leader Host: Terri Ross, Founder & CEO of Terri Ross Consulting Guest Spotlight: Lisa Lickstein, MSW, MBA Co-owner, Lickstein Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa Founder, Women in Business Mentorship Academy Certified Coach + Speaker in Unreasonable Hospitality Lisa Lickstein is the co-owner of Lickstein Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa, with two locations in South Florida and a thriving team of 40. With dual degrees in social work and finance, Lisa brings a rare mix of emotional intelligence and business acumen to her leadership. Their practice was recently named 2024 Business of the Year by the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce — but even with that level of success, Lisa knew something had to shift behind the scenes and she was not above seeking out expert help from TRC. Episode Overview: In this transparent and insightful episode, Lisa opens up about the real challenges aesthetic practices face as they grow — especially when rapid success exposes operational blind spots. She shares: How a failed acquisition deal became a turning point. Why the non-surgical side of their practice needed TRC's expertise. The tension between managing day-to-day operations and planning for scale. And ultimately, why she chose to work with Terri Ross Consulting to course-correct and accelerate growth. Lisa and Terri dive into the mindset shift that must happen when a practice is struggling or outgrows its existing systems — and how expert consulting gave her the tools, clarity, and partnership she needed to align both sides of the business for future success. Key Takeaways: Success Without Strategy Creates Stagnation Even top-tier practices with strong culture and revenue can stall if they're not built for scale. Lisa shares how, despite earning just over 8 figures annually, her practice had room to grow — and needed expert guidance to help her achieve this Leadership Doesn't Mean Doing It Alone Lisa reveals the decision to seek outside help wasn't a weakness, but a strategic strength. Working with TRC signaled to her team, partners, and potential buyers that she was serious about intentional growth. Realized 300% ROI from TRC on EBITDA Growth, Realigned Teams, and a Profitable Exit Through TRC's Business Evaluation and ongoing consulting, The Medical Spa team at Lickstein Plastic Surgery saw EBITDA increase by $300,000 – a massive 300% return on their investment with TRC — while realigning internal teams, improving treatment planning, and setting the foundation for a major acquisition. Collaboration, Not Replacement Lisa applauds TRC's collaborative approach — working seamlessly with existing consultants and ensuring every partner brought their best to the table. The Emotional Side of Business Describing the consulting experience as "business therapy," Lisa shares how TRC helped restore balance between the surgical and non-surgical sides of the practice — keeping both teams valued and aligned. On this episode of Reliability Radio, hosts Jonathan Guiney and Brendon Russ speak with JLL's Bryce Steffens about the most important asset in the age of AI: People. While many workers are "running scared" that AI will take their jobs, Bryce shares a revolutionary mindset shift: What if you eliminate your own job first? Drawing from his presentation at TRC 2025, Bryce focuses on the People and Culture at Work domain of the Uptime Elements, emphasizing Opportunity for Growth and Mattering at Work. Key Takeaways & Concepts: The Glug Effect: Bryce introduces the hilarious and highly relatable analogy of the "glug" —the sudden, overwhelming feeling of negative emotions caused when too many demands (meetings, urgent work) flood your schedule, leading to breakdowns and messes in your team and process. The Proactive Solution: The core counter-strategy is to write things down with the explicit mentality of giving that work to someone else. This practice captures valuable tacit knowledge, creates growth opportunities for others, and frees up your time for passion work. Reliability Connection: By reducing the overwhelm (the "glug"), people are happier, more effective, and the underlying processes become more reliable. Actionable First Steps: Bryce offers simple, low-tech ways to get started, such as writing down just one task, recording a screen recording, or keeping an informal SharePoint or Wiki—proving you don't need official sign-off or a huge budget to begin leaving a meaningful legacy. This session serves as a breath of fresh air, reminding everyone that people drive processes, and focusing on team well-being is the fastest route to reliable equipment. Jimmy Gressier devient champion du monde du 10 000 m et prend le bronze sur 5 000 m, mais le reste du demi-fond français peine à briller : Habz éliminé en séries, zéro finaliste sur 800 m, pas de marathoniens sélectionnés. This week, Dick blows the whistle on the TRC's scheduling shenanigans, accusing them of high tackle interference with the Women's RWC and AFL finals. It's a calendar clash of titanic proportions, and someone's getting yellow-carded. We scrum down on the age-old debate: Six Nations or TRC—which competition reigns supreme? Spoiler: it's less “crown jewel” and more “jewel heist,” depending on your hemisphere. The Lions did a thing—celebrated like Currie Cup champions at 80 minutes, then promptly remembered they're allergic to silverware. We unpack the collapse, the curse, and the cruel optimism. Meanwhile, New Zealand rugby might be going full haka-flameout, and Australia's eyeing the unthinkable double— breaking both the Eden Park and Bledisloe hoodoes. Is it a golden age or just fool's gold? Plus: the URC kicks off and our draft preview goes off the rails faster than a Bulls fan at altitude. Expect botched picks, bruised egos, and a few players who were drafted purely for their haircuts. Music by @monstroid, 80s TV Show.
