With the Teagasc National Beef Conference taking place on Tuesday, the 18th of November at the Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry, County Galway, Future Beef farmer, John Barry from Nenagh, County Tipperary, is on this week's Beef edge podcast to explain his suckling-to-weanling system and how he balances shape and quality to meet both home and export market demands. John Barry runs a 90-cow suckler herd full-time and since taking over the farm in his own name a decade ago, John has steadily developed the enterprise with significant investments, including new sheds, upgraded laneways and fencing, and the installation of a new cattle crush to make vaccinating and dosing more efficient. The herd is split between spring and autumn calving, with around 60 cows calving from February to April and the remainder from August to October. The preferred cow type on the farm is a Limousin–Simmental cross, although Charolais and Belgian Blue crosses also feature in the herd. Most cows are R+ to U– grade animals with good milk. Artificial insemination (AI) is used on more than 75% of the herd. John selects sires from Belgian Blue, Charolais, and Limousin breeds, while a Limousin stock bull is used for mop-up. Red Angus sires are also used on Belgian Blue-type heifers. John produces top-quality U and E grade weanlings for both the local and export markets. In recent years, John has placed a strong emphasis on grassland management, focusing on growing and utilising grass more efficiently to reduce costs. He has also incorporated red clover and undertaken arable reseeding to improve farm sustainability and productivity. John is speaking at this year's National Beef Conference discussing his role in meeting future market demands. Whether you're looking to improve your breeding, plan ahead for tax, or start the conversation about passing on the farm – this event will have something for you. It is a free event and all are welcome. The victors overcame a poor start, going four points down before Oisín Lohan's goal gave the north Galway team a 1-10 to 0-10 interval lead. Kinvara came back after the restart with Darragh Helebert, who finished with 1-10, forcing parity. But Ger Flahive's ninth point of the evening proved to be the winner. Galway senior camogie manager Cathal Murray has made one change for their second fixture in the 2025 Glen Dimplex All-Ireland championship away to Derry on Saturday (31st May 2025). Athenry's Sabina Rabbitte comes into the team replacing the injured Áine Keane. Before the team was announced, Galway Bay FM's camogie analyst Imelda Hobbins looked ahead to the contest on 'Over The Line' with Darren Kelly.
Galway have made two changes from their league final defeat for Saturday's Glen Dimplex All-Ireland championship opener against Dublin (24th May 2025). Portumna's Alannah Kelly comes into the defence, while Shamrocks' Ally Hesnan is named in midfield. Leading up to the game, and before the monumental Special Congress that saw 98% of delegates vote to allow shorts or skorts to be worn in competitive action, Galway manager Cathal Murray spoke to Galway Bay FM's Tommy Devane. == This is an intriguing affair as Dublin have consistently pushed Galway to the wire in recent seasons. There was six points between them in Kilbeacanty last March but after starting with a draw against Tipperary, the Dubs failed to secure another positive result and were relegated from Division 1A of the League. Galway beat Cork in the final group game to book their place in the decider but never showed up, with the Rebels exacting swift and severe retribution with the silverware on the line. The lack of provincial games for the westerners has often led to a slow championship start for the Tribeswomen so Dublin will look to rattle them early but last year's All-Ireland finalists will be favoured to prevail. Throw-in at Kenny Park, Athenry on Saturday is 4pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM.
On Hurling Chat this week, Conor Hayes and Tony Og Regan join Niall and Sean to discuss: Galway v Wexford on Saturday, and what a big game it is. Are Limerick coming right? Galway Minors win in Athenry, while the U20s now play Dublin in their Leinster semi-final. And much more.

Breandán is an inspirational, rising TikTok star in the Gaeltok, who is ensuring that Gaeilge has its place on the global app. My favourite creator on Tiktok by far! He believes that the accessibility of TikTok and its high usage among our youth is key to the revitalisation of our beautiful language. He brings us right back to his school days in Athenry where he was immersed in the language in his youth and how that has had such a positive effect on his love for the language today. Breandán's energy is refreshing as he avidly believes that Irish should be spoken as a living, thriving language as opposed to getting caught up on "cruinneas" or rigid accuracy. This bilingual conversation includes acúpla focal (a couple of words) as they naturally weave through our conversation. This effortless shift between the languages is representative of Breandán's relaxed, innate approach to Irish. He speaks to me about his complicated relationship with An Caighdeán (The Standard) and how it was something he had to learn to navigate during his time in DCU studying Irish at university level. Breandán is a fun, practical advocate for Irish language but he is adamant that he is not a Garda na Gaeilge (language guard) and rather, a person who is speaking and living our language by choice. Breandán warmly reminds us, "remember - it doesn't have to be cruinn, it just has to be Irish!" Absolutely loved chatting to you, a chara! Míle buíochas! Many thanks! I encourage you all to check out Breandán on Tiktok @gaelscoilis
