We did it, y'all! We made it to the end(?) of our Hunger Games deep dive with SUNRISE ON THE REAPING by Suzanne Collins (until the movie release, of course) and the gang is all here! How does one even summarize this book/episode? It was so much more traumatic than I think any of us were expecting, but what a journey. We talk major lore, complex character arcs, trauma, recontextualizing the Hunger Games universe, unending despair, potential movie adaptation choices, more trauma, how President Snow can catch these hands, and yet more despair! Whew. Honestly, we're still not over it. REMINDER: Obvious spoilers for the entire Hunger Games universe, including speculation about the forthcoming movie adaptation of SUNRISE ON THE REAPING. No. Is it exactly as bleak as it should be? Yes. Send us a textWelcome back to Ashley & Liz's dystopian sci fi episode bonus series: The Hunger Games!Today we get SERIOUS as we discuss the amazingly well written, heart wrenching grand finale to the original trilogy. What parallels do we see reflected in real life? Are the dystopian themes regarding media control, rebellion, war, government control, environmental degradation and resource allocation applicable to today's world? Come with us as we open these topics of discussion through a Katniss Everdeen lens.If you've been following along and watched our “From 1984 to Hunger Games” dystopian themes in media and literature episode then you know we're fascinated with everything about this genre and need to delve into this discussion! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley had never read it before. The debate currently on the book talk table is whether or not books (and the act of reading) are inherently political. We'd encourage anyone who has a doubt in their mind to read this series… with themes like media control, a totalitarian regime, and rebellion, it's hard to see how it ISN'T political.Episode 3 covers book 3: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star reviews. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (yes, with a keyboard…), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, and add a fun piece of Hunger Games trivia. Then we wrap this trilogy up with the ultimate Gale vs. Peeta debate. Were these characters meant to represent something much larger than themselves? We'll see… and then we'll dive right into A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes… because obviously Snow was a smash.

In the latest installment of the AskALLi Member Q&A podcast from the Alliance of Independent Authors, hosts Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black discuss effective strategies for marketing middle-grade or young-adult books. They emphasize the importance of targeting parents rather than children and recommend networking with other authors in the same genre to maximize visibility and sales. Other questions include: What do you do differently to launch a perma-free story or list magnet compared to a sale for a short story? What are some promotional things to do when marketing a murder mystery besides paying for NetGalley reviews? What are the moral issues of using AI narration as opposed to a human for your audiobook? Do you have any rules of engagement for dealing with negative reviews and nasty comments? Is it okay to attach press releases when approaching media, and should you try to speak to journalists in person or on the phone? Are there any benefits or disadvantages to launching two books at the same time, especially if one is a novel and the other is a short story collection? And more! When the pages of a book become a battleground for human rights, conversations like the one I have with Bill Konigsberg become not just relevant, but vital. Award-winning and openly gay, Bill Konigsberg has been on the frontlines, both as a sports writer for ESPN and now as a YA author facing the harsh reality of book bans. In an era where queer-themed literature is under siege, Bill's voice is a beacon for authenticity and representation, illuminating the importance of storytelling in the lives of queer teens and the broader community.Transitioning from the adrenaline-infused world of sports journalism to the heartfelt realm of YA fiction, Bill's tale is not just a career shift but a testament to courage and the power of living one's truth. He shares the intimate details of his journey, underscoring the impact that embracing his identity has had on his writing and ultimately, on readers who see themselves reflected in his characters, as well the life-threatening impact that books bans in Republican-led states can have on queer kids. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience required to navigate personal and professional landscapes that aren't always welcoming or safe for the LGBTQ+ community. The episode wraps with a focus on the future, not only for Bill but for all writers and readers in the LGBTQ+ space. We touch upon the collective effort of Authors Against Banned Books and the diverse challenges faced by authors across the spectrum of queer identities. Bill's insights and experiences reveal the multifaceted nature of storytelling in times of adversity, and his commitment to enriching young adult literature with queer narratives that inspire, validate, and empower. In this episode, Bill explains how he navigates the tides of change and censorship, and how he remains hopeful and tenacious in crafting stories that affirm queer lives.Recommended:Destination Unknown - Bill KonigsbergThe Music of What Happens - Bill KonigsbergOpenly Straight - Bill Konigsberg-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock
In recent years, book banning has become an organized movement backed by right-wing organizations, politicians, and conservative donors. Under the guise of ‘parental rights,' books centering on LGBTQ+ characters and people of color are being disproportionately targeted, putting both our democracy and free speech at risk.In this episode of ‘The Cost of Extremism,' we'll take a deep dive into the leading forces behind these book bans, the impact they have on our kids, and what we can do to protect our freedom to read. If you're writing a character-driven story with a female protagonist, or a female POV character, this episode is a must for you. With only one viewing it's easy to miss the storytelling goodness of Lady Bird because it doesn't offer up the kind of story Hollywood has trained us to expect (i.e., external action, male protagonist, hero's journey-style stories). What it does give is a nuanced, complex female protagonist whose internal conflict drives the story. She has explored 50 countries across six continents and will finally make it to Antarctica in November 2023. In 2013, Kellie, her husband, and their two daughters traded middle school for a global adventure. That experience led to a first-class education from economy seats. And that education has turned into her new book. It is a “Dork Diaries meets The Amazing Race” family travel memoir with a unique twist—it's written from her 14- and 12-year-old daughters' perspectives. THE GANG'S BACK, Y'ALL! After a VERY long hiatus, we are thrilled to be back with our Grishaverse pals Jessie and Aubrey to sit down and discuss everything SHADOW AND BONE Season 2 on Netflix! We talk new characters, our favorite (and least favorite) adaptive choices, plot convergences and that breakneak pacing, and everything in between. SPOILER WARNING: The same rules that applied to our coverage of the first season will apply here as well; we decided that the only way we can properly analyze how the show fits into the entire Grishaverse was to include the entire written Grishaverse into our analysis - this includes everything from the SHADOW AND BONE trilogy, the SIX OF CROWS duology, the KING OF SCARS duology, and of course the first season of the Netflix show. That said, we don't get too spoilery, but if you want to remain completely unspoiled on everything from the books we recommend that you come back and listen when you're done reading. Welcome to our LGBT podcast 7 Minutes in Book Heaven – presented to you by This Queer Book Saved My Life!In this podcast, we spend 7 minutes in our virtual studio interviewing LGBTQ authors about their new and upcoming books for us to love and cuddle up with.Today, we meet Tess Sharpe and her upcoming book 6 Times We Almost Kissed (And One Time We Did). What's this new YA novel about? After years of bickering, Penny and Tate have called a truce: they'll play nice. They have to. Their mothers (life-long best friends) need them to be perfect, drama-free daughters when Penny's mother becomes a living liver donor to Tate's mom. Forced to live together as the Moms recover, the girls' truce is essential in keeping everything—their jobs, the house, the finances, the Moms' healing—running smoothly. They've got to let this thing between them go. There's one little hitch: Penny and Tate keep almost kissing.Available January 24, you can order it now at thisqueerbook.com/bookshop.Connect with Tess!Twitter: @sharpegirlInstagram: @forest_of_ardenWebsite: https://www.tess-sharpe.comBecome an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Marissa chats with Rachel Menard about her debut Greek Myth-inspired fantasy - GAME OF STRENGTH AND STORM - as well as making the tough decision to put a novel on the backburner, which is not the same thing on giving up on it entirely; how imagining your story in a totally different genre can lead to unique and unexpected developments in your worldbuilding; writing a retelling that will surprise readers, even those who know the original story; some things to consider when it comes to including multiple points of view, and how to decide which POV to use for each chapter; why motive plays such a huge role in characterization and can help to make your unlikeable characters relatable and your antagonists redeemable; and crafting a magic system with rules and limitations that will constantly challenge your protagonist. Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer
