Season 17, Episode 7: Brew Session (Atraxa, Grand Unifier) + Flashback (Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler) Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a tremendous creature. No one would dispute that. But is it really possible that Atraxa is the strongest creature in all of Magic? Recent tournament results from Standard, Legacy, Modern, and even Vintage have seen Atraxa decks soaring to the top of the standings. This is a heavyweight creature, much more likely to be cheated into play than cast fairly. But once on the battlefield, Atraxa does things other creatures can only dream of. Her trigger looks at a massive 10 cards (1/6th of a typical library), making this less of a “draw 4 cards” and more of a “draw 10, discard 6.” And unlike Niv-Mizzet Reborn, Atraxa grants access to these cards with almost no deckbuilding concessions. Want to use Atraxa to grab a Mox Amber and an Ephemerate? You are welcome to, and you even keep a few other cards for your trouble. What truly sets Atraxa apart is how she helps you even before entering the battlefield. For better or worse, we live in the era of free pitch cards, and Atraxa pitches to everything from Solitude and Grief (more Ephemerate targets) to Force of Vigor and Force of Negation. That means your Atraxa turn doesn't have to end when you tap out for Atraxa, as you can follow up with a Grief or even a free protection spell like Not Of This World. The sky is the limit for Atraxa, and her price has been skyrocketing accordingly. We'll do our part this week to drive that price even higher, as we attempt to find new homes for Atraxa in both Modern and Pioneer. Whatever happens, one thing is clear: never bet against a Niv-Mizzet trigger! Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Faithless Brewing, Episode 33: Crested Sunmare Giddy-up, brewers! It's Horse week at Faithless Brewing, the theme episode you never knew you needed, but now can't recall how you ever lived without. David has been champing at the bit to get Crested Sunmare on the docket, a truly majestic steed that nevertheless failed to cross the finish line during its time in Standard. But don't believe the neighsayers! Despite this rather equestrian Standard pedigree, Sunmare has already galloped to a Grand Prix Day 2 finish in Modern of all places. Was it simply a lack of enablers that made the Standard builds come up lame? Or will the Modern shell prove to be a one-trick pony? In the greener pastures of Pioneer, David thinks he has a thoroughbred, but will his unbridled enthusiasm land him on the whinnying side? There's only one way to find out! This week we've got the horses in the back, horse decklists attached, sleeves are matte black, got the tokens black to match. Saddle up! ALSO: This week, we have a very special bonus episode! We joined forces with our friends at The Dive Down for our first-ever podcast crossover, a deep dive into Niv-Mizzet Reborn in Modern! You can find that episode (The Dive Down, Ep. 51: "ROY G. BDM and Zvi look ahead to Mythic Championship VII and see where the Hall of Famer feels Standard is poised after three major events in pretty rapid succession -- not even accounting for the Twitch Rivals event where Zvi went 6-0 on Day One with his Jeskai Cavaliers deck. Other topics include: Zvi's crazy brew that combines Fires of Invention, Cat Food, and Niv-Mizzet Reborn into one deck that has a little something for everyone to hate on. His other version of Cat Food that uses Emry, Lurker of the Loch and -- why not? -- Vantress Gargoyle. While the metagame of Mythic Championship VI may not have been the most inspiring, it was some of the best played games either of the pair can recall in quite some time. After his 14th Top 8 finish where does Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa rank in the all time Magic pick order? With Veil of Summer banned, how the hell are you supposed to fight the recently unlocked Casualties of War from decimating your side of the table? Where are the aggro decks? Zvi has been streaming and guess what? He really likes it. You should follow him at twitch.tv/zvimowshowitz if you want more crazy decklists like the ones discussed here. You can also follow him at @thezvi on Twitter (and if you don't already follow BDM he can be found talking about food, Magic, nonsense, and probably some more food at @top8games on that infernal website). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/top8magic/support
Faithless Brewing, Episode 21: Leyline of Abundance + Eldraine Previews It's finally here: Green Week! After a long and arduous Hogaak summer, the metagame has finally slowed enough to potentially reward a strategy of flooding the battlefield with green permanents. Core 2020's Leyline of Abundance has been waiting in the wings, offering explosive starts with mana dorks, as well as a few sneaky infinite combos. Also, did somebody say two free pips for Nykthos? The crew breaks down fresh new takes on Leyline Combo, Unbound Flourishing, and Green Devotion. Plus: a host of spicy previews from Throne of Eldraine, including bonus decklists! Roundup: Niv-Mizzet Takes Flight It was a big week for Niv-Mizzet Reborn, as this Faithless Brewing Original has officially ascended to Tier 2 status (at least, according to the wise sages at the Arena Decklists Podcast). But don't just take their word for it. The tournament results speak for themselves, with Niv putting up strong results at MCQs both in paper and online. Glittering Niv (Ihavethefire): 1st place, MCQ Pittsburgh Ramp-less Niv (Damon): 6-2 MCQ Seattle, 6-4 MTGO PTQ, 5-0 league x2 Traverse Niv (cavedan): 6-3 MTGO PTQ Flashback: Kethis, the Hidden Hand We'll be straight up, these decks sucked. Even Matt Nass's build could barely win a game. Not all is lost, however: the Saffi combo proved strong enough to possibly become its own version of the deck, and Emry, Lurker of the Loch means that help is on the way for dedicated Kethis Kombo. Project Keth-eX: 3-7 practice matches, curve felt too slow, Kethis combo less well integrated than Saffi combo Kethis "KCI" (Matt Nass, test deck): 0-5 practice matches, deck folded to everything, mana was horrendous Emry Kethis Combo (Sam Black, test deck) "Hogaak-less Hogaak" (test deck): re-built for speed and to maximize Saffi combo, with potential for turn 2 kill (Carrion Feeder -> Stitcher's Supplier into Unearth on Renegade Rallier, return Saffi, attack for lethal). Faithless Brewing, Episode 8: Ninja Faerie Tempo Snake Is that a winged snake with deadly fangs of poison ice... or an ingenious ninja in disguise? Dreams of ninja glory become real this week as the crew explores David's favorite archetype of all time: sneaky blue tempo decks. Ice-Fang Coatl, Faerie Seer, Ingenious Infiltrator, and Fallen Shinobi offer a host of new tools for players looking to chip away for value while fighting battles on the stack. The ninjas are sweet and the faeries are classy, but are they just too fair for today's Modern? Roundup: The Rise of Creature Combo Hogaak Bridgevine continues to dominate online and in paper, but players are punching back with linear combo decks of their own, looking to exploit Hogaak's lack of interaction. Both Devoted Vizier and Saheeli combo are putting up strong results, and the crew has some builds that we like. Plus: Core 2020 previews and a tournament report with Niv-Mizzet Reborn. GW Vizier Combo: 5-0 league, very strong in current metaJeskai Supercats: 7-3 leagues, Watcher for Tomorrow is promising Flashback: Ranger-Captain of Eos It turns out that if you take an underpowered strategy and add Ranger-Captain of Eos, the result is an underpowered deck with Ranger-Captain of Eos. Martyr Proc does not line up well against today's modern. The Kirin combo seemed to get there on power level, but finding a build that can assemble the combo quickly while not falling prey to the inherent weaknesses of GW midrange proved challenging. Martyr Proc: 4-6 leagues, Ranger-Captain didn't change the outlook for this strategy GW Kirin (Vivien): 4-6 leagues, hard to assemble combo and the GW shell felt underpowered GW Kirin (Eladamri's Call): 4-1 league, more successful at combo but surrounding GW cards are still mediocre Boros Geddon: 3-2 league, needs better value engines to snowball an advantage Brew Session: Ninja Tempo Sultai Ninja Faeries UG Curious Obsession UB Ninja Faeries Temur Sea Stompy

Faithless Brewing, Episode 2: Niv-Mizzet RebornDan has a chip on his shoulder and is eager to prove the haters wrong about Niv-Mizzet Reborn, his pick for War of the Spark sleeper hit in Modern.
